Temperature-dependent pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin (CIP) was studied in the cultured olive flounders, Paralichthys olivaceus, and black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) originally developed for quinolone determination from livestock. Pharmacokinetics of CIP was apparently affected by ambient water temperature. In a two-compartment model for flounders after oral dosage of 20 mg/kg, $K_{01},\;at\;13^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C$ were 4.18 and 1.20/hr, respectively. The $K_{10},\;T_{max}\;and\;C_{max}\;at\;13^{\circ}C$ were 5.574/hr, l4.37${\mu}g/mL\;and\;3.15{\mu}g/mL,$ respectively. The corresponding values at $23^{\circ}C$ were l2.84/hr, 15.39${\mu}g/mL\;and\;6.38{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The AUC, $T_{1/2} (\alpha)\;and\;T_{1/2}\;(\beta)$ were 278.23 ${\mu}g \cdot hr/mL$, 0.24hr and 47.02hr at $13^{\circ}C$ and 3l7.8l${\mu}g \cdot hr/mL$, 0.30 hrs and 60.78hrs at $23^{\circ}C$ for the flounder, respectively. Similar CIP pharmacokinetics were revealed in the black rockfish after oral dosage of 20 mg/kg under the two water temperature regimes. These pharmacokinetical results have some implication in the optimal usage of recently introduced antibacterials in the farmed fish, which were primarily adapted for poultry and mammalian species.

Background: Scapulohumeral periarthritis causes pain and stiffness, and limits movement but it is a treatable condition. This was a clinical study of acupotomy treatment for scapulohumeral periarthritis. Methods: There were 80 patients randomly assigned to the traditional Chinese Medicine group (acupotomy) and the Western medicine group (naproxen), with 40 cases in each group. All patients had adjunct physiotherapy exercises for 14 days. Patients received acupotomy treatment 3 times for 14 days (Day 0, 7 and 14) or naproxen (0.22 g capsule; a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) 3 times a day, for 14 days. The visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, range of motion (ROM) values, and the Melle scale, together with the therapeutic standard of diseases and syndromes in traditional Chinese Medicine were used for diagnosis and evaluation. Results: There were significant differences in the VAS scores, ROM, Melle scores, cure rate and total effective rate in the group which took naproxen and the acupotomy group, before and after treatment (p < 0.01). There were significant differences in the changes in VAS, ROM and Melle scores between the 2 groups (p < 0.01), and the acupotomy group was better than the naproxen group. Conclusion: Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine can improve functional activity and reduce the level of pain experienced by patients suffering from scapulohumeral periarthritis. However, improvement of functional activity of the shoulder joint following acupotomy treatment was more obvious than the use of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and the cure rate, and total effective rate of acupotomy was better.

A potentiometric sensor based on the 1-benzyl-3-(4-nitrophenyl) thio-urea was synthesized and tested as an ionophore in PVC based membrane sensor towards $SCN^-$ ions. This membrane exhibits a linear stable response over a wide concentration range ($1.0{\times}10^{-5}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$) with a slope of -59.2 mV/dec., a detection limit of ${\log}[SCN^-]=-5.05$, and a selectivity coefficient for thiocyanate against perchlorate anion of ${\log}K^{pot}_{SCN^-j}=-0.133$. The selectivity series of the membrane is as follows: $SCN^-$ > $ClO_4{^-}$ > $I^-$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $HSO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $HSO_4{^-}$ > $F^-$ > $CH_3COO^-$ > $HCO_3{^-}$ > $Br^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$ > $SO{_3}^{2-}$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $CO{_3}^{2-}$. The proposed electrode showed good selectivity and a good response for the $SCN^-$ ion over a wide variety of other anions in pH 6.0 buffer solutions and has a fast response time of about < 5s. The influences of the membrane by pH, ionophore, and plasticizer were studied.
Background: Compared with conventional closed therapy, acupotomy has the advantages of lower cost, convenient application, and better single and long-term effects. The aim of this study was to explore the clinical effect of acupotomy in the treatment of Tarsal Tunnel syndrome. Methods: There were 80 patients enrolled into the study who were randomly assigned to either the acupotomy or closed therapy group, with 40 patients in each group. The acupotomy group was treated once every 6 days, on 3 occasions for the duration of treatment, and the closed therapy group was treated twice a week, for 3 weeks as the course of treatment. The effects of treatment were analyzed and evaluated according to the standard of curative effect. Results: The "cure rate" of the number of patients in the acupotomy group whose symptoms had completely disappeared (13 patient out of 39) was higher than the closed therapy group (1 patient out of 39), and this difference was significant (p < 0.01). The number of patients in the acupotomy group who did not benefit from the therapy (5 patients) was significantly lower than the closed therapy group (15 patients; p < 0.05). The total number of patients in the acupotomy group who benefitted from the therapy (34 patients) resulted in an effective rate of 87.18%, which was higher than the closed therapy group (24 patients; 61.53%). The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Acupotomy is effective in the treatment of Tarsal Tunnel syndrome, was superior to traditional closed therapy, and is worthy of clinical application.
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of $H_2O$$6_{16}-5_{23}$, SiO J = 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, and $^{29}SiO$${\upsilon}=0$, J = 1-0 lines are carried out in the direction of the Mira variable star TX Cam with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescopes. For the first time, the $H_2O$ maser emission from TX Cam is detected near the stellar velocity at five epochs from April 10, 2013 (${\phi}=3.13$) to June 4, 2014 (${\phi}=3.89$) including minimum optical phases. The intensities of $H_2O$ masers are very weak compared to SiO masers. The variation of peak antenna temperature ratios among SiO ${\upsilon}=1$, J = 1-0, J = 2-1, and J = 3-2 masers is investigated according to their phases. The shift of peak velocities of $H_2O$ and SiO masers with respect to the stellar velocity is also investigated according to observed optical phases. The $H_2O$ maser emission occurs around the stellar velocity during our monitoring interval. On the other hand, the peak velocities of SiO masers show a spread compared to the stellar velocity. The peak velocities of SiO J = 2-1, and J = 3-2 masers show a smaller spread with respect to the stellar velocity than those of SiO J = 1-0 masers. These simultaneous observations of multi-frequencies will provide a good constraint for maser pumping models and a good probe for investigating the stellar atmosphere and envelope according to their different excitation conditions.
RR~Telescopii is a symbiotic nova exhibiting accretion activities through gravitational capture of the slow stellar wind from a Mira variable. We present high resolution spectra of RR~Tel obtained with MIKE and the 6.5 m Magellan-Clay telescope, in which we find broad features with FWHM exceeding $10{\AA}$ at 6545, 6825, 7082, 7023 and $7053{\AA}$. They are formed through Raman-scattering with atomic hydrogen of far-UV He II 1025, O~VI 1032, $1038{\AA}$ and C II 1036 and $1037{\AA}$. We compute the Raman conversion efficiencies using the case B recombination theory for He II emissions, which are used in turn to infer the intrinsic line luminosities of O VI and C II. The Raman O~VI features are characterized by double-peaked profiles with a peak separation ~ 60km/s, pointing out the presence of an accretion disk with a physical size of ~ sub AU. In contrast, Raman C II features exhibit profiles with a simple peak and a narrower width ~40 km/s, indicating that C II is formed in a much more extended region. The weak C II multiplet at 1335, $1336{\AA}$ found in the IUE spectral archive and the absence of C II 1036, $1037{\AA}$ in the FUSE archive show that far-UV C II lines suffer heavy interstellar extinction consistent with the distance of ~ 2.5 kpc to RR Tel.

Gecko proteins have long been used as anti-tumor agents in oriental medicine, without any scientific background. Although anti-tumor effects of Gecko proteins on several cancers were recently reported, their effect on bladder cancer has not been investigated. Thus, we explored the anti-tumor effect of Gecko proteins and its cellular mechanisms in human bladder cancer 5637 cells. Gecko proteins significantly reduced the viability of 5637 cells without any cytotoxic effect on normal cells. These proteins increased the Annexin-V staining and the amount of condensed chromatin, demonstrating that the Gecko proteinsinduced cell death was caused by apoptosis. Gecko proteins suppressed Akt activation, and the overexpression of constitutively active form of myristoylated Akt prevented Gecko proteins-induced death of 5637 cells. Furthermore, Gecko proteins activated caspase 9 and caspase 3/7. Taken together, our data demonstrated that Gecko proteins suppressed the Akt pathway and activated the intrinsic caspase pathway, leading to the apoptosis of bladder cancer cells. Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H2O and SiO maser lines were performed toward the D-type symbiotic binary system V407 Cyg with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescope. These monitoring observations were carried out from March 2, 2010 (optical phase ϕ = 0.0), 8 days before the nova outburst on March 10, 2010 to June 5, 2014 (ϕ = 2.13). Eight days before the nova outburst, we detected the SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1–0 maser lines which exhibited values of 0.51 K (∼ 6.70 Jy) and 0.71 K (∼ 9.30 Jy), respectively, while after the outburst we could not detect them on April 2 (ϕ = 0.04), May 5 (ϕ = 0.09), May 8 (ϕ = 0.09), or on June 5, 2010 (ϕ = 0.13) within the upper limits of our KVN observations. After restarting our monitoring observations, we detected SiO v = 2, J = 1–0 masers starting on October 20, 2011 (ϕ = 0.83) and detected SiO v = 1, J = 1–0 masers starting on December 22, 2011 (ϕ = 0.92). These results provide clear evidence of the interaction between the shock from the nova outburst and the SiO maser regions of the Mira envelope. The peak emission of SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1–0 masers always occurred at blueshifted velocities with respect to the stellar velocity except for that of SiO v = 1 at one epoch. These phenomena may be related to the redistribution of SiO maser regions after the outburst. The peak velocity variations of SiO masers associated with stellar pulsation phases show an increasing blueshifted trend during our monitoring interval after the outburst.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the causal relationship between use of levocetrizine or cetrizine, and liver injury, by comparing frequency and pattern of hepatotoxicity in levocetrizine or cetrizine prescribed patients. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study, using data retrieved from electronic medical record system. Among 1164 patients prescribed levocetrizine or cetrizine during study period (Jul, 2009 - Jun, 2010) at Seoul National University Hospital, 543 patients with more than 4- time liver function test (LFT) results were included in final analysis. Liver injury was defined as greater than 3 times elevated level of alanine aminotransferase or 2 times elevated level of alkaline phosphatase or total bilirubin, compared to upper limit of normal, in patient with normal liver function at baseline. The frequency and pattern of liver injury were assessed. Results: Incidence of liver injury in patients prescribed with levotcetrizine or cetrizine were 1.48% and 2.94%, respectively. With few exceptions, most injuries were shown to be hepatocellular type. Rapid recovery was observed after drug cessation and long term use tends to be associated with incidence of liver injury. In patient with digestive system disorder, rate of liver injury was significantly higher (p=0.011). Conclusion: The result of this study implies potential need of liver toxicity monitoring, especially in patients taking long term levecetrizine or cetrizine or in patient with digestive system disorder. However, prospective large scale observational study is needed to confirm liver injury associated with the use of levocetirizine or cetirizine.
This study aims to analyze the housing satisfaction of 55 years and older (55+) single-person householders in U.S. urban communities with the 2011 American Housing Survey Data. Single-person householders younger than 55 years of age (55-) were used as a reference group. Housing Adjustment Theory was used to develop a research framework to depict the relationships of housing satisfaction (dependent variable) with demographic and housing variables (independent variables). The regression analysis revealed that age, health status, government income, race, gender, age of house, housing quality, neighborhood, structure type, and tenure status had a significant effect on housing satisfaction levels of both those aged 55- and 55+. However, for the cohort of 55+, education, census region, housing affordability, and structure size also affected their housing satisfaction. Neighborhood satisfaction had the strongest effect on housing satisfaction of both groups. These variables were discussed in terms of resources and constraints contributing to their housing satisfaction. This study highlights the present and future housing trends and challenges of U.S. single householders in U.S. urban communities.
