Oryza grandiglumis Chitinase IVa (OgChitIVa) cDNA encoding a class IV chitinase was cloned from wild rice (Oryza grandiglumis). OgChitIVa cDNA contains an open reading frame of 867 nucleotides encoding 288 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 30.4 kDa and isoelectric point of 8.48. Deduced amino acid sequences of OgChitIVa include the signal peptide and chitin-binding domain in the N-terminal domain and conserved catalytic domain. OgChitIVa showed significant similarity at the amino acid level with related monocotyledonous rice and maize chitinase, but low similarity with dicotyledoneous chitinase. Southern blot analysis showed that OgChitIVa genes are present as two copies in the wild rice genome. It was shown that RNA expression of OgChitIVa was induced by defense/stress signaling chemicals, such as jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, and ethephon or cantharidin and endothall or wounding, and yeast extract. It was demonstrated that overexpression of OgChitIVa in Arabidopsis resulted in mild resistance against the fungal pathogen, Botrytis cinerea, by lowering disease rate and necrosis size. RT-PCR analysis showed that PR-1 and PR-2 RNA expression was induced in the transgenic lines. Here, we suggest that a novel OgChitIVa gene may play a role in signal transduction process in defense response against B. cinerea in plants.

East Asia, which includes China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, is highly impacted by hydroclimate extremes such drought, flood, and typhoon recent year. In 2017, more than 18.5 million hectares of crops have been damaged in China, and Korea has suffered economic losses as a result of severe drought. Satellite-derived rainfall products are becoming more accurate as space and time resolution become increasingly higher, and provide an alternative means of estimating ground-based rainfall. In this study, we verified the availability of rainfall products by comparing widely used satellite images such as Climate Hazards Groups InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS), Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), and Precipitation Estimation From Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR) with ground stations in East Asia. Also, the satellite-based rainfall products were used to calculate the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The temporal resolution is based on monthly images and compared with the past 30 years data from 1989 to 2018. The comparison between rainfall data based on each satellite image products and the data from weather station-based weather data was shown by the coefficient of determination and showed more than 0.9. Each satellite-based rainfall data was used for each grid and applied to East Asia and South Korea. As a result of SPI analysis, the RMSE values of CHIRPS were 0.57, 0.53 and 0.47, and the MAE values of 0.46, 0.43 and 0.37 were better than other satellite products. This satellite-derived rainfall estimates offers important advantages in terms of spatial coverage, timeliness and cost efficiency compared to analysis for drought assessment with ground stations.

Several factors affecting on transformation efficiency were studied to establish a Agrobacterium rhizogenes mediated system for the transformation of Populus species, and We could obtaine tansgenic plantlets expressing the introduced gene. Leaf sections were more sensitive than stem sections to kanamycin and thought to be better material for transformant screening. The bacterial density did not affect on the efficiency of transformation over the range of $4{\times}10^5{\sim}7{\times}10^9\;cfu$. The optimum period for co-cultivation was one day or shorter. Both of the optimum concentrations of cefotaxime and ampicillin in the medium were $250\;{\mu}g/ml$ for elimination of bacteria from the inoculated leaf sections. The addition of acetosyringone in the bacterial culture medium increased transformation rate, and the highest rate was obtained at $50\;{\mu}M$ of acetosyringone. The transformed galls could be selectively induced and gown on the growth regulator-free medium or on the medium containing $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ or higher contrition of kanamycin. The roots were induced from the galls incited by A. rhizogenes within 3 weeks on the growth regulator-free medium as well as on the medium containing growth regulators. The plantlets were regenerated from the galls cultured for 6 weeks on the medium containing 0.05 mg/ml of NAA and 0.5 mg/ml of BA. The expressions of the introduced opine gene in the transformed galls and plantlets were confirmed by the analysis of agropine and mannopine.

To improve academic achievement, the most students not only participate in regular classes but also take various extra programs such as private lessons, private institutes, and educational TV programs. In this paper, we propose a data mining approach to identify which studying methods or usual life patterns during a school vacation affect changes in the academic achievement. First, we derive various studying methods and life patterns that are thought to be affecting changes in the academic achievement during a school vacation. Second, we propose the method of transforming and analyzing data to apply them to decision trees and association rules, which are representative data mining techniques. Third, we construct decision trees and find association rules from the real survey data of middle school students. We have discovered four representative results from the decision trees. First, for students in the higher rank, there is a tendency that private institutes give a positive effect on the academic achievement. Second, for the most students, the Internet teaming sites nay give a negative effect on the achievement. Third, private lessons that have thought to be making a large impact to the achievement, however, do not make a positive effect on the achievement. Fourth, taking several studying methods in parallel nay give a negative effect on the achievement. In association rules, however, we cannot find any meaningful relationships between academic achievement and usual life patterns during a school vacation. We believe that our approach will be very helpful for teachers and parents to give a good direction both in preparing a studying plan and in selecting studying methods during a school vacation.
Ramp metering is the most effective and direct method to control a vehicle entering the freeway. This paper proposed the new density-based ramp metering method. Existing methods that use the flow data had low reliability data and can have various problems. Also, when the ramp metering was operated by freeway congestion, the additional congestion and over-capacity can occur in the ramp. To solve this problem with the existing method, the proposed method used the density and acceleration data of the freeway and considered the ramp status. The developed strategy was tested on Trunk Highway 62 west bound (TH-62 WB) in Minnesota Twin-City and compared with Stratified Zone Metering(SZM), which had been operating in the Twin-City freeway. To constitute the experiment environment, the VISSIM simulator was used. The Traffic Information and Condition Analysis System (TICAS) was developed to control the PTV VISSIM simulator. The experiment condition was set between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Oct 5th, 2014 during severe traffic congestion. The simulation results showed that total travel time was reduced by 20% for SZM. Thus, we solved the problem of ramp congestion and over-capacity.
Aspen demand has increased recently in the Great Lakes region in the United States. Since aspen has moved into the region in late 1800's, its growing stock has increased so as to change forestry industry of the Lake States. Intensive timber harvesting and biomass removal may cause nutrient depletion, especially on nutrient-poor sites. Forest nutrients and nutrient cycling were investigated in aspen stands of 7-10, 27-33, and 41-42 year-old growing on sandy soils in Minnesota. Nutrients added to the aspen stands by atmospheric deposition and soil weathering were efficiently absorbed and stored in the tree biomass. Aboveground biomass increased from $24.4t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at young stands to $139.2t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at mature stands. Nutrients accumulated in the tree biomass showed same magnitude of difference. Nutrients added to the site through atmospheric deposition were in the order of Ca, N, K, Mg, and P. Annual litterfall was greater in older stands. However, the amount of nutrients returned by litterfall was not significantly different among stand ages due to the greater nutrient contents in the litterfall of young stands. Litter decomposition and nutrient release rates were greater at young stands than at older stands. Likewise, nutrient availability was higher in young aspen stands and became lower as the stands grew older. Nutrient leaching loss was minimal at all stand ages. Soil N mineralization was greater at young stands than at older stands. Nutrient cycling process was facilitated in young aspen stands with an increased level of available nutrients, Based on the estimations of nutrient balance and nutrient removal by harvesting, Ca was the most critical element which was likely to be depleted if aspen stands are intensively harvested with short rotations.

This study performed an assessment of wave power potential in the Kangwon and Dongnam regions encompassing the East Sea and part of South Sea. Annual electricity production and economic effects of 28 wave energy converters with 750kW capacity were analyzed using significant wave height and peak wave period data(created from the NOAA's NWW3 model) and InVEST software(developed by Stanford University and University of Minnesota). Annual electricity production was estimated to be up to 1,207MWh/year and at least 163MWh/year. The spatial pattern of annual electricity production showed that the sea far from land has higher wave power potential than the sea near coast. The net present value(NPV) of 28 wave energy converters was calculated by considering an operation period of 25 years. When assuming that the electricity produced from wave energy converters is transferred to onshore power plants through underwater cables, the NPV was estimated to be up to 5,883USD(6,600,000KRW) and at least -63,494USD(-71,000,000KRW). In contrast, the NPV increased up to 28,095 USD(31,600,000KRW) when assuming that the electricity is utilized in the Ulleungdo and Dokdo. In addition, it was found that the break-even line of NPV in the East Sea becomes closer towards the land according to the increment of electricity price. The NPV of wave energy converters near the Ulleungdo and Dokdo will be 88,158 USD(99,000,000KRW) if the increment of electricity price is 100KRW.
Introduction : Recent studies Suggested that there is a strong correlation between acupuncture stimulation and its related cortical activation. Anther study showed that either positive or negative BOLD effects could be observed depending on anatomical structure in acupuncture stimulation. In ttis study, we investigated a new acupoint $KI_6$ (照海), which was known as motor-related acupoint and obtained an evidence that the stimulation of $KI_6$ resulted in either negative or positive BOLD response to stimulation. Methods & Results : 1. Subjects and paradigms : Two separate stimulation paradigms were performed on five healthy (aged 22-23 yrs) in this study. First, the paradigm of acupuncture stimulation was that the acupuncture needle was inserted in acupoints $KI_6$, which is located in lateral side of the foot and then continuously twisted(補瀉를 除外한 捻轉法) for 70 seconds for 10 cycles of activation. During rest period (70 seconds), the needle was completed removed from acupoint. Total 60 cycles were performed and 10 images were obtained per cycle. Second, nonacupoint was randomly selected and the same paradigm was performed as acupoint stimulation. The stimulation protocol comprised 10 cycles of alternating. activation and rest (10 images per cycle). Total 60 cycles were performed and each cycle take about 1.5 sec for motor task. Subjects take an at least 15 minutes break before starting anther paradigm. 2. fMRI mapping : Multi-slice functional images were obtained on a 1.5T Magnetom Vision MRI scanner (Simens Medical, Erlangen, Germany) equipped with high performance whole-body gradients. The BOLD T2 * - weighted images were acquired with acho planar imaging sequence (TR = 1.2 sec, TE = 60 msec, and flip angle = $90_{\circ}$). The other sequence parameter are : FOV = 210 mm, matrix=$64{\times}128$ or $64{\times}64$, slice number=10 and slice thickness = 5 or 8 mm. the anatomic images were obtained with Spin-echo T1-weighted images. The resulting images were then anaiyzed with STIMULATE (CMRR, U. of Minnesota) to generate functional maps using a student T-test (p < 0.005) and cluster analysis. Both positive and negative response were evaluated. Conclusions : We have observed the activation of the motor cortex by stimulating motor-related acupoint ($KI_6$). Among five subjects, negative BOLD response was shown in four and positive response in one. All subjects showed positive response to conventional finger flexion-extension task. To understand the detailed mechanisms of correlation between acupuncture stimulation and BOLD fMRI changes and two typs of response, further study strongly required.
A Study was conducted to examine the nature and extent of psychological differences among diagnostic subgroups of temporomandibular disorders(TMD) patients and to whether psychological distress acts as a precipitator for TMD or is only an incidental consequence of the discomfort and frustrations presented by the disorder. Ninty six TMD patients and ninty seven non-TMD dental patients were included for the study as an experimental group and control group. TMD patients were classified into subgroups according to their primary pain sites and labeled as: 1) Myogenous TMD group; 2) Arthrogenous TMD group; 3) Mixed TMD group. After Hilkimo indices were rated from patient history and clinical examination, levels of psychological distress were measured using SRRS (Social Readjustment Rating Scale) and MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). Outcomes from Helkimo indices, SRRS, and MMPI were assessed in terms of diagnostic subgroups and pain chronicity. The relationship between SRRS and MMPI scores were also assessed. The results were as follows : 1. The TMD patients showed higher frequencies of AiII, DiII, and DiIII of Helkimo indices than those in the control subjects. 2. The chronic TMD patients showed lower frequencies of DiII and DiIII of Helkimo indices than those in the acute group. 3. The arthrogenous TMD group showed higher frequencies of DiII and DiIII of Helkimo indices than those in the myogenous TMD group. 4. The TMD patients showed higher SRRS mean score than that in the non-TMD patients. 5. The SRRS mean score was highest in the myogenous TMD group and lowest in the arthrogenous TMD group. 6. The chronic TMD patients showed higher SRRS mean score than the acute TMD group. 7. The TMD patients showed higher MMPI mean scores on the Hs, D, Hy, and Pt scales than those in the non-TMD patients. 8. The MMPI mean scores on th Hs, D, and Hy scales were higher than of other MMPI scales in the TMD patients as well as in the myogenous and the mixed TMD group and they showed 1-3-2(Hs, -Hy, -D.) profile pattern, conversion "V". 9. The MMPI mean scores on the Hs and Hy scales were higher in all subgroups of TMD patients than non-TMD patients. 10. Although there were no significant differences in the MMPI mean scores on all the scales between the acute and the chronic groups of all TMD patients, the chronic myogenous TMD group showed higher MMPI mean scores on the Hs, Hy, Pa, and Pt scales than the acute myogenous TMD group. 11. There were positive correlationships between SRRS score and each MMPI scores on the Hs and Hy scales.Hy scales.
Objectives: We studied correlations between neuropsychological tests and perceptual disorder in patients with head trauma and psychiatric patients in order to explore the functional localization of brain in perceptual disorders. Methods: Halstead Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery, Korean Wechsler Intelligent Scale, and Minnesota Multiphasic Peronality Inventory(MMPI) were administered to one hundred ninteen patients consisting of sixty nine psychiatric patients and fifty patients with brain damage. We tested the correlation between results of neuropsychological tests and peceptual disorder scale PDS) made from nine items related with perceptual disorder in MMPI. T-tests between twenty one higher scorers and seventeen lower scorers of PDS were also performed in the psychiatric group. Results: In brain damage group, significant correlations were found in tests related with function of frontal lobe such as category tests, trail making tests, tactual performance test, and fingertip number writing test, and significant correlations were also noted in the tests related with function of right hemisphere such as tactual performance test, performance, picture completion, picture arrangement and block design. Tests related with subcortical function such as digit symbol test, arithmetic and digit span were signigicantly correlated, too. In psychiatric group, there were significant differences of PDS in the tests related with function of right hemisphere such as picture completion, block design, and right laterality index, and in the tests related with function of left hemisphere such as comprehension, vocabulary, and similarities. Conclusion: Perceptual disorder seems to be related with functions of frontal lobe, right hemisphere, and subcortex in both groups. In a psychiatric group, left hemisphere may be also partially related with perceptual disorder.
