  • This paper reports on the theoretical analysis of mixed lubrication for the piston ring. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow and asperity contact model. The cyclic variations of the nominal minimum oil film thickness are obtained by numerical iterative method. The total friction is calculated by using the hydrodynamic and asperity contact theory. The effect of the roughness height, pattern, and engine speed on the nominal minimum film thickness, friction force, ad frictional power losses are investigated. As the roughness height increases, the nominal oil film thickness and total friction force increase. Also, the effect of the surface roughness on the boundary friction is dominant at low engine speed and high asperity height. The longitudinal roughness pattern shows lower mean oil film pressure and thinner oil film thickness compared to the case of the isotropic and transverse roughness patterns.

  • This paper describes the minimum cost expansion planning which is based on the economical aspect under the various conditions on the power system expansion planning. It presents not only linear cost characteristics analysis but also stepwise cost characteristics analysis which satisfies practical condition in the power system. The latter analysis must be handled by integer programming (IP), because the relation between the cost and the capacity has stepwise characteristics. In order to proceed the latter analysis, the solving procedure is illustrated in detais by using branch and bound method which includes the network flow theory and maximum flow-minimum cut theorem.

  • The winding of the motor stator coil is broken due to external stress and various factors. If the proper current is not injected when interturn fault(ITF) occurs, the fault can easily be expanded and the motor can be finally destroyed, resulting in many problems with time costs and safety. In this paper, the power loss limit concept, which is the inherent durability of each motor, is applied to secure safety by controlling the total power loss of the motor within the limits. So, we propose an algorithm that can control maximum torque per minimum power loss based on constant torque curve and power loss limit. To verify the proposed method, the simulation and experimental results with an Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) having an ITF are shown.

  • This paper presents a flyback technology in power conversion aimed at increasing efficiency and power density, reducing cost and using minimum components in AC-DC conversion. The proposed converter provides these features for square waveforms and constant frequency PWM. It is designed to operate in a wide input voltage range of 75-265VAC RMS with two output voltages of 5V and 20V respectively and full load output power of 5W. The proposed converter is suitable for high efficiency and high power density application such as LCDs, TV power modules, AC adapters, motor control, appliance control, telecom and networking products.

  • In this paper, a DC converter to improve the performance of Power LED system is discussed. The mathematical model of PWM converter power stage using 3-Terminal PWM cell is introduced for power LED system. A controller for DC converter system is used as a self-tunning regulator with a recursive least-squares algorithm. Minimum variance control method is used as a control law. Experiment results verified that proposed control system could improve the performance of Power LED system.

  • We consider the joint optimization problem of transmit power level, MMSE receiver filter and access point(AP) selection for multi access points environment. In the previous work, transmit power and MMSE receiver filter were jointly optimized[1] and transmit power and best access point were optimized jointly[2]. For each case, the algorithm was proposed and its convergence which guarantees the minimum total transmit power was proved. In this paper, we further improve the algorithm by jointly optimizing three parameters. More specifically, 1) we propose the algorithm by considering transmit power, MMSE receiver filter and access point selection jointly. 2) we prove that the proposed algorithm guarantees convergence with minimum transmit power consumption. In the simulation results, it is shown that proposed algorithm outperforms two other algorithms, i.e., 1) algorithm with transmit power and MMSE receiver filter, and 2) algorithm with transmit power and best access point selection.

  • Considering heat transfer and heat loss processes for the heat engine operating between two fixed heat reservoirs, it may be qualitatively explained that the maxima of power output and its efficiency depending upon operating conditions are extreme maxima. Furthermore, it is also found that from an economic point of view the above two extremes are related to extreme minima of plant cost per unit power output and operation cost per unit power output respectively, and the condition of minimum cost per unit power output exists between the extreme minimum conditions of plant cost per unit power output and that of operation cost per unit power output.

  • Congestion Management (CM) is an attractive research area in the electrical power transmission with the power compensation abilities. Reconfiguration and the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices utilization relieve the congestion in transmission lines. The lack of optimal power (real and reactive) usage with the better transfer capability and minimum cost is still challenging issue in the CM. The prediction of suitable place for the energy resources to control the power flow is the major requirement for power handling scenario. This paper proposes the novel optimization principle to select the best location for the energy resources to achieve the real-reactive power compensation. The parameters estimation and the selection of values with the best fitness through the Symmetrical Distance Travelling Optimization (SDTO) algorithm establishes the proper controlling of optimal power flow in the transmission lines. The modified fitness function formulation based on the bus parameters, index estimation correspond to the optimal reactive power usage enhances the power transfer capability with the minimum cost. The comparative analysis between the proposed method with the existing power management techniques regarding the parameters of power loss, cost value, load power and energy loss confirms the effectiveness of proposed work in the distributed renewable energy systems.

  • This paper describes evaluation results of the wind power penetration limit (WPPL) and the wind energy penetration (WEP) in the Mongolian central power system (MCPS). A wind power plant (WPP) in a power system possesses an output power limit because the power system must maintain a balance between the generation and consumption of electricity at all times in order to achieve an adequate level of quality. The instantaneous penetration limit (IPL) of wind generation at a load is determined as the minimum of the three technical constraints: the minimum output, the ramp rate capability, and the spinning reserve of the conventional generating units. In this paper, a WPPL is defined as the maximum IPL divided by the peak load. A maximal variation rate (VR) of wind power is a major factor in determining the IPL, WPPL, and WEP. This paper analyzes the effects of the maximal VR of wind power on the WPPL, WEP, and capacity factor (CF) in the MCPS. The results indicate that a small VR can facilitate a large amount of wind energy while maintaining a high CF with increased wind power penetration.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach to noise power estimation for speech enhancement in noisy environments. The method based on IMCRA (improved minima controlled recursive averaging) which is widely used in speech enhancement utilizes a rough VAD (voice activity detection) algorithm which excludes speech components during speech periods in order to improves the performance of the noise power estimation by reducing the speech distortion caused by the conventional algorithm based on the minimum power spectrum derived from the noisy speech. However, since the VAD algorithm is not sufficient to distinguish speech from noise at non-stationary noise and low SNRs (signal-to-noise ratios), the speech distortion resulted from the minimum tracking during speech periods still remained. In the proposed method, minimum power estimate obtained by IMCRA is modified by SMT (spectral minima tracking) to reduce the speech distortion derived from the bias of the estimated minimum power. In addition, in order to effectively estimate minimum power by considering the distribution characteristic of the speech and noise spectrum, the presented method combines the minimum estimates provided by IMCRA and SMT depending on the weighting factor based on the subband. Performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by subjective and objective quality tests under various environments and better results compared with the conventional method are obtained.
