Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.
Miniature Joule-Thomson cryocoolers have been widely used for rapid cooling of infrared detectors, probes of cryosurgery, thermal cameras, missile homing head and guidance system, due to their special features of simple configuration, compact structure and rapid cool-down characteristics. The cool-down time, the temperature at the cold end, the running time and the gas consumption are the important indicators of the performance of the J-T cryocooler. In this study, the initial cool-down stages of the J-T cryocooler were investigated by numerical simulations. The results show the effects of the initial charging pressures of gas on the cool-down time and the temperature at the cold end and the gas consumptions.
Blood pressure (BP) measurement plays a pivotal role in veterinary medicine for diagnosing cardiovascular disorders and monitoring anesthesia of animals. Although indirect BP measurement has been widely applied to monitor BP because of its convenience and non-invasiveness, it is still unclear whether indirect BP measurement is compatible with direct BP measurement in minipigs. In addition, the effect of animal posture during BP measurement is not well understood in minipigs despite its importance to cardiovascular performance. Therefore, both systolic and diastolic arterial BPs in minipigs were measured via femoral artery catheterization for direct BP measurement and using a compressive cuff as an indirect BP measurement under the dorsal or right lateral recumbent postures. Numerical values were processed by the Bland-Altman method to calculate the bias ${\pm}$ SD and the limits of agreement (LOA). In accordance with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines, the results between direct and indirect BP measurements were determined as apparent disagreements in both systolic and diastolic arterial BPs under all postures because of large bias ${\pm}$ SD and wide LOA. The results of the present will help prevent misinterpretation of the anesthetized patient's condition during monitoring of BP by indirect measurement.

A peristaltic micropump with lightweight piezo-composite actuator (LIPCA) membrane valves is presented. The micropump contained three cylinder chambers that were connected by microchannels and two active membrane valves. A circular miniature LIPCA was developed and manufactured to be used as actuating diaphragms. The LIPCA diaphragm acted as an active membrane valve that alternate between open and closed positions at the inlet and outlet in order to produce high pumping pressure. In this LIPCA, a lead zirconium titanate ceramic with a thickness of 0.1 mm was used as an active layer. The results confirmed that the actuator produced a large out-of-plane deflection. During the design process, a coupled field analysis was conducted in order to predict the actuating behavior of the LIPCA diaphragm; the behavior of the actuator was investigated from both a theoretical and experimental perspective. The active membrane valve concept was introduced as a means for increasing pumping pressure, and microelectromechanical system techniques were used to fabricate the peristaltic micropump. The pumping performance was analyzed experimentally in terms of the flow rate, pumping pressure and power consumption.

An experimental study is conducted for unsteady wet steam flow in a four-stage low-pressure test steam turbine. The measurements are carried out at outlets of the last two stages by using a newly developed fast response aerodynamic probe. This FRAP-HTH probe (Fast Response Aerodynamic Probe - High Temperature Heated) has a miniature high-power cartridge heater with an active control system to heat the probe tip, allowing it to be applied to wet steam measurements. The phase-locked average results obtained with a sampling frequency of 200 kHz clarify the flow characteristics, such as the blade wakes and secondary vortexes, downstream from the individual rotational blades in the wet steam environment.

On the basis of standard Si processing, the miniaturized piezoresistive-type Si pressure sensor with a chip size of $1.7{\times}1.7{mm^2}$ was fabricated and its operating characteristics were investigated. The sensor chip has a full-bridge type of 4 boron-diffused resistors which is formed on an $1.0{\times}1.0{mm^2}$ area, $20{\mu}m$ thick n-type Si diaphragm and finally, encapsulated under room temperature, 1 atm in order to measure a gauge pressure. The operating characteristics of this sensor were determined as a pressure sensitivity of $14.2{\mu}$V/VmmHg, a rated pressure range of 0~760 mmHg, and a maximum nonlinearity of $1.0{\%}$ FS at room temperature.
Recently, fluid dynamic bearings (EDBs) have important applications in miniature rotating machines such as those found in the computer information storage industry, due to their outstanding low acoustic noise and NRRO (Non-Repeatable Run Out) characteristics. This research investigates the dynamic behavior of fluid dynamic bearings composed of hydrodynamic herringbone groove journal and spiral groove thrust bearing. The five degrees of freedom of FDB are considered to describe the real motion of a general rotor bearing system. The Reynolds equation and five nonlinear equations of motion for the dynamic behavior are solved simultaneously, The incompressible Reynolds equation is solved by using the finite element method (FEM) in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film and the five equations of motion by using the Runge-Kutta method. The reaction forces and moments are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. Numerical results are validated by comparing with the previously published experimental and numerical results. As a result the dynamic behavior of FDB spindle such as orbit, floating height, and angular orbit is investigated by considering the conical motion under the static and dynamic load conditions.

In the cavitation tunnel, the first corner playes role for the flow direction to execute 90-degree turn. So, energy loss is serious, and the cavitation phenomena well occur in the guide vane surface. In this paper, the flow in the first corner was numerically calculated. From the calculation result, cavitation phenomena mainly occurred in the suction side of the last guide vane and vicinity that vane and tunnel wall adjoin each other. And bubbles occurred from all guide vanes if the flow velocity in the test section reaches the any critical value. We could analogize with our experience in the water tunnel that bubbles that occurred in time not vanish, and become miniature in the flow although the pressure recover. So, they circulate with flow in the tunnel, and come into view in the test section. Therefore, first corner must be designed for bubbles not to appear in the test section according to the flow condition like velocity and pressure demanded by the experiment. We analyzed flow in case that the first elbow configuration was redesigned and some of the existing guides vanes were eliminated. And we presented that first elbow can be easely designed for the improvement of tunnel performance through the computational analysis.
The effect of tip clearance height on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the wake region of a high-turning turbine rotor cascade has been investigated with a miniature cone-type five-hole probe. Distributions of velocity magnitude, secondary velocity vectors, and total-pressure loss coefficient are presented for three tip gap-to-span ratios of h/s = 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 percent. The result shows that with the increment of h/s, tip leakage vortex tends to be intensified and aerodynamic loss due to the leakage vortex is increased as well. In the case of h/s = 1.0 percent, aerodynamic loss in the tip-leakage flow region is found dominant in comparison with that in the passage vortex region. With increasing h/s, mass-averaged secondary loss coefficient has a greater portion in the mass-averaged total-pressure loss coefficient.
