  • As world population increases and the world economy expalds, so does the demand for natural resources especially strategic metals such as cobalt. An accurate assesment of the nation's minerals must include not only the resources available in the ground but also those that become available through recycling. In this paper, data on domestic and international supply of cobalt and its applications by end-user were analyzed for stable security of cobalt resources and effective recycling of cobalt scraps. Also, an initial evaluation of the flow of cobalt-containing materials in the United States was prepared. In 2003, 8,000 metric tons of cobalt were consumed in the United States and an estimated 28% of U.S. cobalt supply was derived from scrap. The superalloy industry and catalyst industries have well-established recycling or cobalt recovery practices. Recycling rates of cobalt scraps from magnet alloy and cemented carbide were relatively low.

  • In the present work, we report a novel microstructure of scalenohedral calcite synthesized without any additives by a simple and ecofriendly carbonation process carried out in a liquid-gas system as well as the effects of experimental conditions on the crystal growth of the scalenohedral calcite phase. Various process parameters, pH, temperature, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, $CO_2$ flow rates, and the total volume concentration, were investigated to enhance the sensitivity of the process. The highest average length of the scalenohedral calcite was obtained at pH 6.0, temperature of $45^{\circ}C$, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration of 0.2M, $CO_2$ flow rate of 80mL/min, and total volume of 1L. The synthesized calcite was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR to identify the phases and surface morphology.

  • In this study, the separation of samarium to neodymium with Karr column was investigated. Separation properties of Sm/Nd binary system was estimated with experimental parameters such as flow rate, initial pH of aqueous phase, saponification of PC88A in organic phase and agitation speed. The extraction rate and distribution coefficient increased with increasing initial pH of aqueous phase at 16.5 ml/min(retention time 10 minute) of flow rate of organic and aqueous phase, and equilibrium pH of aqueous phase after extraction was maintained at 1.5 by saponified PC88A. Also, the extraction rate and distribution coefficient were drastically increased with increasing saponification degree of PC88A and agitation speed, and optimal saponification degree was $40\%$. Extraction rate of Nd and Sm was $19.6\%$ and $72.5\%$ respectively at retention time 10 minute, initial pH 1, saponification degree $40\%$ and agitation speed 120 rpm.

  • Korea Institute of Geoscience & Mineral Resources (KIGAM) carried out 2 dimensional multi-channel seismic surveys for Domi-Basin of east-southern part of Jeju Island, South Sea, Korea in 2007. The purpose of this survey is to investigate the structure of acoustic basement and the potential of energy resources in the Korean shelf. It is essential to produce fine stack and migration section to understand the structure of basement. However a basement can not be clearly defined where multiples exist between sea surface and seafloor. This study aimed at designing the optimal data processing parameter, especially to eliminate the peg-leg multiples. Main data processing procedure is composed of minimum phase predictive deconvolution, velocity analysis and Radon filter. We tested the efficiency of processing parameter from stack sections of each step. Our results confirmed that processing parameters are suitable for the seismic data of Domi-Basin.

  • We tried to evaporate and dry the moisture contained Flue gas desulfurization gypsum and phosphogypsum by using the microwave directly. In the result of the heating to the Flue gas desulfurization gypsum and phosphogypsum using 2.45 GHz microwave which was created by magnetron 700 W, 1,000 W and 1,700 W, respectively. According to the increasing the microwave output intensity from 700 W to 1,700 W, the evaporate time of moisture was shortened from 10 to 3 minutes. Gypsum were changed to calcium sulfate hemihydrate. However, ${\beta}$-calcium sulfate hemi-hydrate were not changed to anhydrite.

  • This study has been carried out to use the municipal solid waste sewage sludge ash generated at sewage disposal field as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Limestone, shale, converter slag, and fly ash were used as the main raw materials. After the raw materials were mixed, these were fired at 1,300, 1,350, 1,400, 1,450, and 1,500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and cooled rapidly in air. The properties of clinker synthesized were examined with XRD, SEM, and burnability index by polysius method.

  • In order to recover valuable metals from fine-grained electronic waste, bioleaching of Cu, Zn, Al, Co, Ni, Sn and Pb were carried out using Aspergillus niger as a leaching microorganism in a shaking flask. Aspergillus niger was able to grow in tile presence of electronic scrap. The formation of organic acids(citric and oxalic acid) from Aspergillus niger caused the mobilization of metals from waste electronic scrap. In a preliminary study, in order to obtain the data on the leaching of Cu, Zn, Al, Co and Ni, the metal leaching behaviours were accomplished using Organic acid(Citric acid and Oxalic acid) instead of Aspergillus niger. At the electronic scrap concentration of 50g/L, Aspergillus niger were able to leach more than 95% of the available Cu, Co. But Al, Zn, Pband Sn were able to leach about 15-35%. Ni and Fe were detected in the leachate less than 10%.

  • Wire electrical explosion(WEE) has been used for the production of fine metal particles. In WEE, electrical powder was stored and compressed into capacitor and released to produce fine particles through evaporation and condensation. In this study, the effect of applied voltage on the size of copper powders was investigated. High tension was added up to the explosion device by dividing 4 steps. At voltages lower than 5.2 kV, the fraction of powders finer than $44{\mu}m$ was almost negligible. The effectiveness of explosion increased sharply with increased voltage over 5.8 kV. At the highest voltage of 6.4 kV, more than 80% of explosion products were finer than $44{\mu}m$.
