  • The Kyungju pyrophyllite deposits were formed by the hydrothermal alteration of andesitic rocks, which were intruded by Cretaceous granite mass. The major minerals are pyrophyllite, kaolinite and chlorite. The deposits may be zoned outward into pyrophyllite zone, silicified pyrophyllite zone and weakly altered zone (propyrilite zone) according to mineral assemblages. Chemical compositions vary in close relation with the mineralogical assemblages: $Al_2O_3$ content is high due to pyrophyllitization at the deposits and altered zones in comparison to andesitic country rocks, while the contents of $Na_2O$, CaO and MgO are generally low due to leaching during the alteration. This variation of chemical elements may be applicable in the geochemical exploration of pyrophyllite deposits.

  • In view of the circular geometry of the Serra da Cangalha impact crater, we have carried out a 3D forward modeling computation for twenty-five MT data in order to obtain the 3D resistivity forward model for the crater region. The 3D resistivity forward model revealed a five-layer model, showing a significant reduction in the basement resistivity. We suggest that this, perhaps, could be due to the structural disturbances that have been caused by the meteorite impact on the crater about 220 million years ago resulting in brecciation, fracturing, alteration and shocked zone filled with fluids. Also, the sensitivity analysis of the 3D model chosen indicates that 3D models having a crater diameter greater than 151 are inconsistent with our data because the 3D model responses are very sensitive to changes in the diameter beyond 15 km. This analysis also reveals that, the depth limits (for the 3D body) causing the anisotropic effects seen on some of our apparent resistivity curves maximally does not extend beyond 1.2 km depth.

  • 20 groundwater samples in Sahagu Busan were analyzed to understand the characteristics of groundwater quality of the area. Using the data, physical and chemical property, mineral contents, water-rock reaction of the groundwater carried out. The water type in the area is Ca2+-HCO3- and Ca2+-(Cl-+SO42-). Average EC value of the groundwater is 540μS/cm, but in the case of several samples influenced by eawater, the value is up to 4,140μS/cm. Some samples are exceeding the drinking water tandard in NO3-N and NH4-N. On the other hand, contamination by heavy metal is not found.

  • Rock bolts are widely used as a supplementary roof support system in hard-rock mining since a long time. Since the performance of fully grouted passive bolts depends on bond strength, in the present investigation extensive laboratory pull-out as well as push-out tests were conducted varying the bolt diameter, length and cement-water mixing ratios of grout. The load-displacement curves were developed and were verified with the numerical results obtained from finite element analysis using ALGOR software. Numerical models were validated for push-out tests and a detailed analysis was carried out to know the displacement, stress, strain distribution along the bolt.

  • Some components in uranium-bearing formations which consist mainly of black shale, slate. and low grade coal-bearing formation of Ogcheon Belt were processed statistically in order to find out the geochemical correlations with uranium. Geochemical enrichment of uranium, vanadium and molybdenum in low grade coal-bearing formations and surrounding rocks is remarkable in the studied area. Geochemical correlation coefficient of uranium and molybdenum in the rocks displays about 0.6, and that of uranium and fixed carbon about 0.4. Uranium and vanadium in uranium-bearing low grade coals denote very high correlation with fixed carbon, which is considered to be responsible for enrichment of metallic elements, especially molybdenum. Close geochemical correlation of uranium-molybdenum couple in the rocks can be applied as a competent exploration guide to low grade uranium deposits of this area.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to use Landsat TM data for geological mapping and minieralized area detection. The study was carried out in Kyongju-Pohang area where toseki and bentonite mines are distributed. Rock samples of 18 granites, andesites, toseki, betonites, sedimentary rocks and altered rocks in the study area were collected for the study. The radiometric measurtment of the rock samples were carried out with a radiometer in the laboratory and in the field. The Landsat TM bands 2,3,4,5,7 were used for the measurement. The radiometric characteristics of the sample were mainly processed by the principal component analysis. It was found that the pricipal component analysis of the radiometric characteristics of geologic materials is very useful for the detection of the alteration of rocks and grade of mineral contents. It is expected that the technique can be used in the future for the efficient exploration of minerals in this country and abroad.

  • Hyperspectral images have shown a great potential for the applications in resource management, agriculture, mineral exploration and environmental monitoring. However, due to the large volume of data, processing of hyperspectral images faces some difficulties. This paper introduces the development of an image processing tool (HYVIEW) that is particularly designed for handling hyperspectral image data. Current version of HYVIEW is dealing with efficient algorithms for displaying hyperspectral images, selecting bands to create color composites, and atmospheric correction. Three band-selection schemes for producing color composites are available based on three most popular indexes of OIF, SI and CI. HYVIEW can effectively demonstrate the differences in the results of the three schemes. For the atmospheric correction, HYVIEW utilizes a pre-calculated LUT by which the complex process of correcting atmospheric effects can be performed fast and efficiently.
