  • An extraction study of neodymium (Nd) was investigated with different individual and mixer of extractants such as PC88A, D2EHPA, Cyanex 272, Versatic acid 10 and D2EHPA+Alamine-304-1, D2EHPA+Alamine-308, D2EHPA+TBP, D2EHPA+TOPO, PC88A+Alamine-336 and PC88A+TBP respectively. In all cases, it was observed that the extraction percentage of Nd increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration but rather opposite observation was found that the extraction percentage of Nd decreased with increasing TBP concentration along with D2EHPA. Adding TBP to PC88A had no favorable effect on the extraction of Nd, whereas use of a mixture of PC88A with Alamine336, increased the extraction percentage of Nd under the same condition. Based on our experimental studies, this paper reports the results on the basic approach and extraction of neodymium.

  • The behavior on the solvent extraction of heavy rare earths (HRE) by using PC88A was confirmed to demonstrate the possibility of recovery on the HRE from industrial wastewater, which consist of low concentration rare earth. We verified the extraction behavior of the HRE through a change of equilibrium pH, extractant concentration and A/O ratio, and also confirmed the stripping behavior depending on the type of mineral acids. At equilibrium pH 1.0, extraction of rare earth (RE) was completed from 95% to 100%. In all extraction conditions, it tend to be extracted in order of high atomic number. When A/O ratio was 10/1, Yb and Tm were concentrated at the maximum and increased 6-fold and 3-fold compared to initial concentration, respectively. To confirm the stripping behavior of the RE, three mineral acids were applied to the organic phase and consequently rate of stripping was increased in order of $HNO_3$, $H_2SO_4$ and HCl.

  • Electrokinetic remediation was studied for the removal of toxic heavy metals from tailing soils. This study emphasized the dependency of removal efficiency upon heavy metal speciation, as demonstrated by different extraction methods (sequential extraction, total digestion, and 0.1 N HC1 extraction). The tailing soils examined showed different physicochemical characteristics, in view of initial pH, particle size distribution, and major mineral constituents, and contained high concentrations of target metal contaminants in various forms. The electrokinetic removal efficiency of heavy metals was significantly influenced by their partitioning prior to treatment, and by the pHs of the tailing soils. The mobile and weakly bound fractions of heavy metals, such as exchangeable fraction, were easily removed by electrokinetic treatment (more than 90% in removal efficiency), whereas immobile and strongly bound fractions, such as organically bound and residual fractions, were not effectively removed (less than 20% in removal efficiency).

  • The ocean signal that reaches the detector of an imaging system after multiple interactions with the atmospheric molecules and aerosols was retrieved from the total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). A simple method referred to as 'Path Extraction' applied to the Landsat-TM ocean imagery of turbid coastal water was compared with the conventional dark-pixel subtraction technique. The shape of the path-extracted water-leaving radiance spectrum resembled the radiance spectrum measured in-situ. The path-extraction was also extended to the SeaWiFS ocean color imagery and compared with the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which relays on the assumption of zero water leaving radiance at the two NIR wavebands (765 and 865nm). The path-extracted water-leaving radiance was good agreement with the measured radiance spectrum. In contrast, the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm led to essential underestimation of the water-leaving radiance in the blue-green part of the spectrum. The reason is that the assumption of zero water-leaving radiance at 755 and 865nm fails due to backscattering by suspended mineral particles. Therefore, the near infrared channels 765 and 865nm used fur deriving the aerosol information are no longer valid for turbid coastal waters. The path-extraction is identified as a simple and efficient method of extracting the path radiance largely introduced due to light interaction through the complex atmosphere carried several aerosol and gaseous components and at the air-sea interface.interface.

  • This study compares and analyzes inorganic components of four different Pu-erh tea species consumed in Korea. The criteria for the inorganic components was based on the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) recommendations. Out of the 19 general items: potassium, manganese, silicon and fluorine were detected in amounts exceeding the maximum allowable concentration by 5~23, 57~91, 1.6~1.8 and 9~18 times respectively. Out of the 15 potentially harmful elements: aluminum and nickel were exceeded the Maximum allowable concentration by 9~14 times and 0.8~1.2 times respectively. To reduce the concentration of inorganic elements in excess of the maximum allowable concentration, the extraction time of tea should be less than 1 minute in addition to limiting the amount. The amount of Pu-erh tea for extraction was about 0.1 g manganese, about 0.3 g potassium, about 0.5 g fluoride and about 2 g silicon. Therefore, the maximum amount of tea for extraction should be 0.1 g in regards to the safety of Pu-erh tea. Based on the recommended maximum daily intake of inorganic ingredients by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, it is desirable that the number of extractions be less than three.

  • Distribution diagram of $CoCl_2$ and $MnCl_2$ was obtained by analyzing ionic equilibria of the two metals in HCl solution. In the HCl concentration range of 4 and 10 M, most of cobalt exists as $CoCl_2$, whereas Mn exists $MnCl_{3}^-$ and $MnCl_2$. Extraction isotherm of Co(II) and Mn(II) was calculated by using the equilibrium constant for the solvent extraction of the two metals by Alamine336. Although the equilibrium constant for the solvent extraction of Mn was higher than that of Co, extraction isotherm indicated that cobalt could be extracted more efficiently than manganese at the same initial extraction conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dexamethasone on the healing aspect of gingiva and alveolar bone after extraction. Extracted socket of 24 Sprague-Dawley rat was used. To extract easily and minimize injury, ${\beta}-APN$ 0.2g/kg/day soluted in mineral water was administrated for 5 days before extraction in both group. Ampicillin 1.5ml/kg i.m.,q.d, was administered for preventing infection after teeth extraction in both group, and dexamethasone 0.2mg/kg/day was injected for 3 days in experimental group.3 rats on each day was sacrificed on 1, 3, 7, 15 days after extraction. Histologic examination and the activity of osteoclasts by tartrate resistant acid phosphatase was observed. The results were as follows : 1. The Overall healing pattern was similar with both the experimental and control group, but in experimental group osseous healing was delayed. 2. The activity of osteoclasts was increased to day 3 and then decreased after day 3 in the experimental group. In comparison to the control group, the experimental group showed increased appearance to day 7 and then decreased appearance following day. 3. Regarding to the change of osseous tissue, the activity of osteoblasts was shown at day 7,but osteoclastic activity of the experimental group was less than that of the control group. The osteoclastic activity was statistically significant between two groups except day 7(p<0.05, p<0.01). In conclusion, the effects of dexamethasone for healing of extraction socket were considered as limiting the activity of osteoclasts, and the healing of extraction socket was delayed.

  • Smectitic clays, occurring in Kırka and Bigadiç boron evaporite deposits formed in Miocene playa lake environment in Turkey, contain $LiO_2$ 0.02-0.21% and 0.16-0.30%, respectively, and boron tailings are also reported to contain $LiO_2$ 0.04-0.26%. Lithium in smectitic clays was identified to be retained in hectorite. The XRD results revealed that hectorite was contained in 25.7% and 79.7% of Kırka and Bigadiç deposit samples respectively. In this study, we selected a clay sample from each deposit with lithium content of ~0.18% and estimated extractable lithium by acid treatment and roasting method commercially applicable to lithium resources, such as lepidolite and hectorite. When 1 g of crushed clay (particle size less than $74{\mu}m$) was reacted with 200 mL of 0.25 M HCl solution, the amount of lithium dissolved increased with the increase of reaction time up to 10 hours for both samples. Reaction time longer than 10 hours did not significantly increased the amount of lithium dissolved. After 10 hours of reaction, 89% of lithium in the clay sample from the Kırka deposit was dissolved, while 71% of lithium was dissolved from the Bigadiç deposit tailing sample. 87% of lithium in the clay sample from the Kırka deposit was extracted and 82% of lithium was extracted from the Bigadiç deposit tailing sample by the roasting extraction method, where clays were leached after a thermal treatment at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours with $CaCO_3$ and $CaSO_4$.
