  • Since the implementation of International Standard Banking Practice(ISBP) in 2003, ICC Publication No. 645 has become an invaluable help to the documentary credit practitioners including banks, companies, transportation and insurance companies etc. However, with the approval of UCP 600 in October 2006, it has become necessary to provide an updated version of the ISBP. It should be emphasized that this ISBP is an updated version as opposed to a revision of ICC Publication No. 645. The new ISBP has been implemented concurrently with UCP 600 since July 1st, 2007. The first necessity was to replace UCP 500 article numbers with those of UCP 600. Second, where it was felt proper, the contents of some paragraphs that appear in ICC Publication No. 645 and that have been covered in UCP 600 have been removed from the updated version of the ISBP. This explains the reduction in the number of paragraphs from 200 to 185. The international standard banking practices documented in the new ISBP are consistent with UCP 600. This ISBP does not amend UCP 600. It explains how the practices articulated in UCP 600 are applied by documentary practitioners. The new ISBP and the UCP 600 should be read in their entirety and not in isolation. It should be kept in mind that any terms in a documentary credit which modifies or excludes the applicability of a provision of UCP 600 may also have an impact on the international standard banking practices. Consequently, when parties concerned must take into account any terms in a documentary credit that expressly modifies or excludes a rule contained in UCP 600.

  • This paper, drawing on various secondary sources related to bilingualism and bilingual education, proposes a semi-CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) model as an initial option for Korea's ELT instruction at a primary level, with a subsequent application to a secondary level in mind. It is reported that the current pedagogy focused on early English education and communicative language teaching does not meet the needs of students' EFL proficiency. The main reasons for this are considered to lie in the social and educational environment which impedes EFL students' meaningful and authentic communication in target language. Thus, by exploring a conceptual approach to such a problem, this paper suggests a paradigm of integrating content and language for a reasonable solution.

  • Rapid integration of information technology into health care systems has included the use of highly portable systems-in particular, personal digital assistants (PDAs). With their large built-in memories, fast processors, wireless connectivity, multimedia capacity, and large library of applications, PDAs have been widely adopted by physicians and nurses for patient tracking, disease management, medical references and drug information, enhancing quality of health care. Many health-related PDA applications are available to both dietetics professionals and clients. Dietetics professionals can effectively use PDAs for client tracking and support, accessing to hospital database or information, and providing better self-monitoring tools to clients. Internship programs for dietetics professionals should include training in the use of PDAs and their dietetics applications, so that new practitioners can stay abreast of this rapidly evolving technology. Several considerations to keep in mind in selecting a PDA and its applications are discussed.

  • Lumbar radiculopathy is generally caused by such well-recognized entity as lumbar disc herniation in neurosurgical practice; however rare pathologies such as thrombosed epidural varix may mimic them by causing radicular symptoms. In this case report, we present a 26-year-old man with the complaint of back and right leg pain who was operated for right L4-5 disc herniation. The lesion interpreted as an extruded disc herniation preoperatively was found to be a thrombosed epidural varix compressing the nerve root preoperatively. The nerve root was decompressed by shrinking the lesion with bipolar thermocoagulation and excision. The patient's complaints disappeared in the postoperative period. Thrombosed lumbar epidural varices may mimic lumbar disc herniations both radiologically and clinically. Therefore, must be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of lumbar disc herniations. Microsurgical techniques are mandatory for the treatment of these pathologies and decompression with thermocoagulation and excision is an efficient method.

  • Sustainability is becoming more and more important in our everyday lives. Thus, it is apparent that more sustainable initiatives are incorporated in a building design concept to reduce operation costs and environmental impacts. However, will the construction cost go up if the building is going green - especially if it is a tall building? This is the question on everyone's mind. In the following paragraphs, we will look into a case study of a skyscraper in Nanning, China. That 411-metre skyscraper, Nanning China Resources Centre East Office Tower, is currently under construction. Designed to LEED-CS Gold standards, the building has adopted a number of sustainable design elements and operation practice, which indeed only accounts for a small percentage of the total construction cost.
