In this study the runout of spindel is selected as a parameter through which we could appreciate the workability of machine and the quality of products. Throigh the runout of high speed machining center on freeload machining, the revolution accuracy and the characteristics in connection with spindle speed are evaluated. It was experimented flat and ball end milling for estimating machine accuracy and workability by measuring spindel runout. In end, This paper shows the effects of runout on surface roughness through analysis of runout and roughness profiles.

  • This paper describes new methods to minimize the cutting time in zigzag milling operation of two dimensional polygonal surfaces. Previous works have been focused on mainly experimental approaches by considering some machining parameters such as, spindle speed, depth of cut, cutter traverse rate, cutter diameter, number of teeth, tool wear, life of tool, and so on. However, in this study, we considered two geometrical factors one by one in order to see the effect separately, which are the length of cut and the number of cutter traverse. In an N-sided concave or convex polygon, an algorithm has been developed which minimize the total length of cut. Also, a heuristic approach was used to minimize the number of cutter traverse.

  • After the micro turning lathe was developed in the last year by AMR Laboratory in Yeungnam university, a micromilling machine is developed for micro/meso machining. This machine is integrated with PZT-driven micro-sliders, micro-linear encoders, aerostatic spindle which has maximum 150,000 rpm. It is applicable to milling and drilling of micro scale. This paper presents the possibility of micro/meso machining and characteristics of micro end milling process by using micro machine. A machining of micro parts using 0.2 mm flat end mill was achieved by micro-milling machine. Experimental results show the machining capability and positional accuracy of this machine is good enough for machining micro parts.

  • An off-line Geometric Adaptive Control Scheme is applied to the milling machine to identify its guideway errors. In the milling process, the workpiece fixed on the bed travels along the guideway while the tool and spindle system is fixed onto the machine. The scheme is based on the exponential smoothing of post-process measurements of relative machining errors due to the tool, workpiece and bed deflections. The guideway error identification system consists of a gap sensor, a, not necessarily accurate, straightedge, and the numerical control unit. Without a priori knowledge of the variations of the cutting parameters, the time-varying parameters are also estimated by an exponentially weighted recursive least squares method. Experimental results show that the guideway error is well identified within the range of RMS values of geometric error changes between machining passes disregarding the machining conditions.

  • A cutting force model for face milling operation using 3-directional specific cutting force coefficients is developed. The model is taken into consideration factors such as cutter geometry, machining conditions, spindle eccentricity, insert initial postion errors, etc. The simulated force in X, Y, Z directions from the model are subsequently compared with measured forces in the time and frequency domains. The simulated forces have a good agreement with measured forces.

  • We applied an artificial neural network (ANN) and evaluated surface roughness prediction in lateral milling using an endmill. The selected workpiece was AL6061-T4 to obtain data of surface roughness measurement based on the spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut. The Bayesian optimization algorithm was applied to the number of nodes and the learning rate of each hidden layer to optimize the neural network. Experimental results show that the neural network applied to optimize using the Expected Improvement(EI) algorithm showed the best performance. Additionally, the predicted values do not exactly match during the neural network evaluation; however, the predicted tendency does march. Moreover, it is found that the neural network can be used to predict the surface roughness in the milling of aluminum alloy.

  • As high technology industries such as IT and display have developed, demand for application parts of micro lens and lens array has been extremely increasing. According to these trends, many researchers are studying on the fabrication technology for parts of the micro lens by a variety of methods such as MEMS, Lithography, LIGA and so on. In this paper, we have performed researches related to ultra precision micro lens, lens array mold and fabrication of Lenticular lens mold for three-dimensional display by using mechanical micro end-milling and fly-cutting fabrication method. Tools used in this research were a diamond tool of R 150$\mu\textrm{m}$. Cutting conditions set up feed rate, spindle revolution. depth of cut and dwell time as variables. And we analyzed surface quality variation of the processed products according to the cutting conditions, and then carried out experiments to search the optimum conditions. Through this research, we have confirmed that we can fabricate the ultra precision micro lens mold with surface roughness Ra=20nm and the holographic lens mold by using micro end-milling and fly-cutting fabrication method. Furthermore, we demonstrated problems happened in the fabrication of the micro lens and established the foundation of experimental study for formulating its improvement plan.

  • Recently, the micro end-milling processing is demanded the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in milli-structure parts, micro machine parts and molding industry. The cutting conditions of micro end-milling has an effect on surface roughness of cutting surface. Therefore this study was carried out to cut stainless steel using high revolution air bearing spindle and micro end-mill and analyze the cutting condition to get the optimum surface roughness by design of experiment. From this study, surface roughness have an much effect according to priority on depth of cut, revolution of spindle and feed.

  • This study was carried out as one of efforts to overcome difficulties in air bearing design due to low stiffness and low damping. Hydrodynamic effects on hydrodynamic stiffness of a fluid film in a high speed air bearing with tow-row air sources are investigated. The hydrodynamic effects by the high speed over DN 1,000,000 and eccentricity of a proceeding which are not considered in conventional design of an air bearing need to be reconsidered. The hydrodynamic effects, which dominantly influence on the load capacity of air bearing, are caused mainly by proceeding speed, eccentricity, and the source positions. The two-row source arrangement in the air bearing produces quite unique hydrodynamic effects with respect to pressure distribution of the air film. Optimal arrangement of the two-row sources improves performance of an air bearing in film reaction force and loading capacity of high speed spindles. This study compares the pressure distribution by numerical simulation as a function of eccentricity of proceeding and the source positions. The air source position 1/7L form one end of an air bearing was found to be superior to source position of 1/4L. The dynamic stiffness were obtained using a two-dimensional cutting method which can directly measure the cutting reaction forces and the displacements of the spindle in two directions using a tool dynamometer and transducer sensors. Heat generation in the air film can not be negligible over the speed of DN 2,000,000. In order to analysis effects of heat generation on the characteristics of air bearing, high cooling bearing spindle and low cooling bearing spindle were tested and compared. Characteristics of the frequency response of shaft and motion of run out errors were different for the spindle. The test results show that, in the case of low cooling bearing spindle, the stiffness became smaller due to heat generation. The results, which were obtained for high speed region, may be used as a design information for spindle which can be applied to precision devices such as ultra precision grinding and ultra high speed milling.

  • High speed machining system have been used in industrial because it is effective to a material manufacturing with various shape. Recently the end-milling processing is needed the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in aircraft, automobile part and molding industry. Therefore this study proposed to decide best manufacturing cutting condition for surface roughness and rapid manufacturing tune by using computer Image processing system and 3D modelling. Until the 16,000 rpm, the surface roughness is decreased rapidly, but it is not over that. The 22,000 rpm is the spindle speed with the optimum surface in the high speed end-milling. In the case of the feed rate with 2,000 mm/mm and 8,000 mm/mm, the surface roughness is better than 4,000 mm/min and 6,000 mm/min. By using the 3D modelling, it is effectively represented shape characteristics of working surface m high speed end-milling.
