  • An Image-Based Target Tracker maintains LOS(Line Of Sight) to a target by controlling azimuth and elevation gimbals of an ISS(Inertially Stabilized System). Its controller produces the gimbals commands of the ISS using tracking errors provided by an image tracker. The control performance of the target tracker with PI controller generally used for tracking controller is limited because of bandwidth limitation by time delay yielded by image capture and processing of the image tracker. In this paper, tracking controller using target states estimator is proposed which can enhance the tracking performance under the highly dynamic maneuvering conditions of the ISS and the target. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the tracking performance than that with only PI controller.

  • In this paper, we designed self-frequency synchronizing circuit using image rejection mixer(IRM) and single-sideband(SSB) up-converter which can effectively eliminate the image frequencies occurred in multi-channel super-heterodyne receivers and help us to match inter-channel phase. Also the self-frequency synchronizing circuit simplifies system because there need no extra devices for making intermediate frequency(IF) by creating the local signal within several nanoseconds by means of generating the same frequency of IF signal and modulating radio frequency(RF) signal. We adopt the limiting amplifier for the purpose of protecting the circuit from spurious signals which come from the front end side having wide instantaneous bandwidth characteristics and constantly injecting same level into the input local signal of IRM. The IRM we fabricated has image rejection ratio of 27dB, which is good over 7dB for foreign company's. Also, the SSB up-converter we fabricated has 1dB compression point of 18dBm, which is good over 16dB for foreign company's. And the size is compact about one-forth.

  • It is very important to share tactical information such as video, images, and text messages among soldiers for situational awareness. Under the wireless environment of the battlefield, the available bandwidth varies dynamically and is insufficient to transmit high quality images, so it is necessary to minimize the distortion of the area of interests such as targets. A natural operating method for soldiers is also required considering the difficulty in handling while moving. In this paper, we propose a natural ROI(region of interest) setting and image compression method for effective image sharing among soldiers. We verify the proposed method through prototype system design and implementation of eye gaze detection and ROI-based image compression.

  • Image blurring in airborne camera can be prevented through timely actuation of LOS(Line of Sight) into the opposite direction to the aircraft advancement, i.e. FMC(Forward motion compensation). Performance verification of FMC requires installation of camera to the aircraft. However, in many ways the verification process has little choice but to be implemented in the laboratory. In this paper verification method of FMC performance in the laboratory is introduced. With collimator target installed in the known reference position image obtained by actual mission plan naturally displays image blurring as well as LOS displacement by FMC effect. Through comparison of the amount of those image blurring and LOS displacement to the equivalent image distortion expected by the application of the FMC reference command can the performance be verified. In this paper we propose a new verification method of FMC performance in laboratory along with generalized solution of FMC reference command, and assess the validity of our proposition.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the color and color coordinations and their aesthetic values expressed in the military look designs from 1996 to 2000. The research data were gathered from Vogue and Collezioni Donna from this period. Total of 1004 works were collected and used for this study. The results were summarized as follows. In the colors of the military look, achromatic colors such as black and white were found to be of the highest quantity, which indicates that achromatic colors continued to be proposed as fashionable colors since 1996, and this influence was reflected in the military look. In terms of color coordination, monochromatic coordination accounted for 52.7% of the military look, through which it could be presumed that designers utilized it greatly to make an effective expression of the masculine image of the military designs.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the formative characteristics and the aesthetic values of the Military style in the 20th century and the images of the Military look shown in recent collections. The results of this study are as follows; 1) The aesthetic values of the Military style includes authority, functionality, resistibility and bisexuality. Authority is represented in suits and coats attaching details such as epaulets, flap pockets, gold buttons and badges. Functionality is represented in pants suits and skirts suits which are comfortable and simple. Resistibility is represented in wrinkled, dirty-old and torn military items. Bisexuality is shown on the military pants suits that a skirt or a mink coat is draped over. 2) The Military look in collections are expressed in classic, romantic, sexual, sporty, avant-garde and ethnic images. Classic images are appeared in suits and coats attaching details such as epaulets, flap pockets, gold buttons and badges. Romantic images are represented in the military items made of pastel-tone lace or splendid colored silk. Sexual images are appeared in designs to expose or to focus in women's body. Sporty images are represented in the military items made of new materials such as cotton-fleece, cotton-jersey and tencel. They have camouflage prints, melange-gray and fluorescent colors. Avant-garde images are appeared in the deformed suits and outer made of special materials with camouflage prints, khaki, gray and black. Ethnic images are represented in wearing military and ethnic items at the same time or military items made of ethnic colors, prints and handmade details.

  • Military targets in SAR images are not distinguished easily unlike those in optical images, because targets are only dozens of pixels and they have many corner reflectors sensitive to the incidence angle of radar signals. Due to those problems, SAR image analysts have difficulties in recognizing military targets captured by SAR images. Furthermore, manual analysis cannot respond promptly enough to rapidly changing situations such as battle field. We need automated analysis to solve these problems. In this paper, we analyzed algorithms for prescreening of military targets in SAR images. We implemented some prescreening algorithms and tested the algorithms using SAR data. As a result, we will report performance of the tested prescreening algorithms.

  • This research analyzed military journalist activities and key photos of Werner Bischof, the military journalist during Korean war. Werner Bischof entered Korea twice in 1951 and 1952 for military journals. Through Korean war pictures, essay, multiple letters and photobooks, I shed a light on the background of his military journals and activities, and analyzed topics and characteristics based on key photos that he took during his first and second military journalist activities. Bischof created a work centered on 'Human'. Especially, he has this consciousness of 'What happens to civilians in war-ridden area?'. Bischof took civilians in Sanyangri in his camera to announce pain of civilians and tragedy of war coming from war during his first military journalist activity. During his second military journalist activity, he critiqued ideological brainwashing, life of prisoners of war in a humanist point of view. The latter showed characteristics of clear contrast of black and white, image arrangement based on characters, and outstanding photo views. His military journal activity is in search of civilian suffering, and humanism in Korean war. This consciousness crosses through generation over generation that cannot be compared to other military journalists.

  • This paper describes a thermal image processing algorithm for uncooled type TEC-less IR detector which is applicable to fire control system of small arms. We implemented a real-time gain and offset compensation algorithm based on polynomial approximation from the raw dataset which is acquired by two reference temperature of blackbody from various FPA(Focal Plane Array) temperature. Through the experiment, we analyzed the output characteristics of detector's raw-data and compared IR image quality to traditional non-uniformity correction method. It shows that the proposed method works well in all FPA temperature range with low residual non-uniformity.

  • Different from the field of electro-optical(EO) image analysis, there has been less interest in similarity metrics between synthetic aperture radar(SAR) target images. A reliable and objective similarity analysis for SAR target images is expected to enable the verification of the SAR measurement process or provide the guidelines of target CAD modeling that can be used for simulating realistic SAR target images. For this purpose, this paper presents a similarity analysis method based on the siamese network that quantifies the subjective assessment through the distance learning of similar and dissimilar SAR target image pairs. The proposed method is applied to MSTAR SAR target images of slightly different depression angles and the resultant metrics are compared and analyzed with qualitative evaluation. Since the image similarity is somewhat related to recognition performance, the capacity of the proposed method for target recognition is further checked experimentally with the confusion matrix.
