Objectives: The purpose of this study was to establish a relationship among oral health perception, practicality, and the health-promoting lifestyle profile (HPLP) of soldiers, to finalize the oral health education content to be offered to military personnel under military service and explore remedial measures. Methods: The subjects included military soldiers older than 19 years of age in the Chungnam province. The study instrument was a structured questionnaire evaluating the general characteristics, HPLP, oral health perception, and oral health practice. Data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The HPLP evaluation of the soldiers was 3.39, and the group with the higher HPLP level showed better oral health recognition and oral health practice, with a statistically significant difference. There were differences in oral health perception, tooth brushing practice, and oral health education interest depending on the level of education and stratum of the soldier. The higher the soldier's HPLP, the higher were the oral health perception and oral health practice. The factors affecting the HPLP were oral health perception, tooth brushing practice, and interest in oral health education. Conclusions: After the military discharge, it is necessary to devise ways that will enhance oral health perception and practices that promote good oral health and lifestyle.
This paper focuses on a scheduling problem of military training. Repetitive and identical training over multiple serials is a common type of military education. A simple but systematic method is suggested to determine a training schedule for small groups divided from each serial. A satisfactory training schedule and the number of such small groups can be determined by iteratively solving assignment problems with additional constraints. With this method, loads of instructors can also be balanced without violating constraints associated with precedence and continuity relationships among lectures.
Five Islands in the West Sea of Korea (Baekryeong-do, Daecheong-do, Socheong-do, Yeonpyeong-do, and Woo-do) are located very close to the North Korea's coast and all of them are under the jurisdiction of South Korea. The North and South Korean naval vessels clashed twice in the West Sea of Korea on June 15, 1999 and on June 29, 2002. These incidents were resulted from conflicts over the validity of the Northern Limit Line(NLL) and the appropriate maritime boundary between the two Koreas. From the viewpoint of South Korea, the North Limit Line is a lawful Maritime Military Demarcation Line under the Korean Military Armistice Agreement and it must be maintained as a maritime boundary between two Koreas until being substituted by a peace treaty. In conclusion, the maritime boundary between two Koreas cannot be settled easily by the principles of the International Law of the Sea at present.
Objectives: To identify factors affecting the health of male professional soldiers. Methods: Cross-sectional questionnaire data was collected from a randomly stratified sample population of 763 officers and sergeants who were employed in 34 units in the Korean military. Data were statistically analyzed using Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Work environment and personal health behavior were influential factors, which were differentiated by recent disease history including cardiovascular disease and self-rated health status. Sergeants in special forces/units or engaged in front-line military activities, and soldiers who were current smokers and heavy drinkers were more likely to have been diagnosed with a disease in the preceding three months. Those who were older, obese, and heavy drinkers were more likely to have cardiovascular disease than those who were less obese and more physical active. Soldiers exhibiting signs of extreme stress were more likely to poorly self-rate their health status. Conclusion: Health behaviors and characteristics of work environment significantly influence the health status among Korean professional soldiers. Health promotion strategies are needed to change individual heath behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and work stress. A healthier working environment should also be promoted.
The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of learning desire in the health education of military drill curriculum and to furnish basic data for the effective health education at high school. A total of 594 high school students were participated in the questionnaires and the 12 domains & the 55 questions were utilized for this study. The survey was conducted from March 15 to March 27, 1993 and the collected date were analized by T-test and F-test. The results of this study are as followings : 1. In the 12 domains, respondents indicated high degree of learning desire in 'human & sex', 'nutrition' and 'disease of adult' in that order. However 'accident & disaster', 'transport & management' and 'nursing' were not highly ranked. 2. In the 55 questions, respondents showed high degree of learning desire in 'artificial respiration' & 'cardiopulmonary resuscitation', 'precautionary of adult disease' and 'sex & sex moral' in that order, but low degree of learning desire in 'the management of many wounded persons' and the 'synopsis of nursing'. 3. Comparing the degree of learning desire by grade, the 1st, the 3rd and the End grade were ranked in that order. The 1st and 3rd graders showed higher degree of learning desire in 'human & sex', and the 2nd graders in 'nutrition'. 4. Also, female students showed higher degree of learning desire than male students in general. Female students indicated it in 'nutrition', 'human & sex' and 'adult disease' in that order while male students in 'human & sex', 'adult disease' and 'nutrition' in that order. 5. The academic high school students showed higher degree of learning desire than the vocational high school students. 'Human & sex' was highest ranked at both academic and vocational high school students.
This research used Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) to analyze the importance and priority of functional space and evaluation factors of each functional space of the military dining facility. Dining in the military is an important factor in restoring combat power and promoting morale. The military dining facility serves as a not only for meals, but also for watching TV, education and club activities. Workers working in dining facility spend most of their work hours in dining facility, perform tasks such as cooking, dishwashing, and leftover disposal, and take breaks. As such, the military dining facility is a space where various functions are performed, and space planning should take into account these various functions when planning the building of the dining facility. However, the criteria for defense and military facilities, which are the basis for planning the space of military dining facility, are calculated only by simply analyzing the standard floor plan to match the size of the person-to. Therefore, when there is space to be reduced in the total area, there are side effects such as leaving visible table space without consideration for priority or functional space, unseen office space, and adjusting the entire area through reduction of the lounge. Accordingly, based on the priority of the space that the staff of the military dining facility considers important, this research aims to analyze the characteristics of each functional space through classification according to its unique function. This can be an indicator that can be used as a basis for future revision of the building floor area standards of the defense and military facilities standards, and it can improve usability with an efficient space plan that takes into account the characteristics of the Korean military and the satisfaction of its workers. Furthermore, efficient use of the defense budget through rational building plans can contribute to budget reduction.
This study was carried out to investigate preference and perception of seafood among soldiers on cook's duty in military meal service. 58.9% of the respondents answered that they liked seafood and the major eating place were in their home(48.0%) and in the restaurant(40.4%). The favorite seafood cooking methods turned out to eat as raw fish, to grill, to stew, to fry in order. In comparison with the meat dishes, seafoods were considered superior to meat in nutritional value but evaluated inferior to meat in the aspects of sanitation and tasteless problem. 32.9% of the respondents answered they liked seafood dishes in military meal service and they disliked them because of taste or cooking method of the seafood. They liked fried or grilled seafood in military meal service. The plate waste amounts of the seafood menu were more than half in almost every surveyed menu and reasons for plate waste were fish smell and taste problems. The difficulties of cooking seafood in military meal service were breaking down of seafood during cooking and complexity of cooking. They scored seafood higher than average in nutrition, taste, diversity of cooking method and aspect of health. On the basis of the results above, introducing diverse cooking methods and menu are suggested and education of cooking skills and development of cooking facilities are needed in military meal service.
The aim of this study was to use narrative inquiry to explore the experiences of medical students who faced expulsion, military service, and readmission, and their journeys of identity formation. Three medical students were recruited via snowball sampling, and each participant was interviewed twice. According to the sequence of experiences, their stories were summarized as follows: the process of being expelled, the military service experience and readmission process, and the present. Before all three students were expelled, they lived dissolute lives free of concern from the entrance examination and failed to cope well with dropping out. They felt that military experience had helped them develop interpersonal skills in the clinical setting and the strength to withstand a difficult crisis. Two students were motivated to become doctors after military service, but the other was not. They had reflected deeply over their unique experiences. The scars imprinted from their experiences became a means of stimulation, and they ultimately acquired the resilience and ability to accommodate for and counteract their weaknesses. This appears to have been an important influence on their identity formation. The narrations of their rare experiences can help medical educators more fully understand and support medical students through difficulties, specifically with regard to academic failure or expulsion. These findings may prompt medical professors to think about the kind of guidance or motivation that could help students before expulsion, rather than assuming that they are simply lacking academic ability.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge of cervical cancer, HPV and intention for vaccination in Korean soldiers on active duty. Methods: Participants were 494 army men aged 18 to 26 serving in D area. Knowledge of cervical cancer was measured using the 8 item scale developed by Han et al. (2007) and knowledge of HPV was measured using the 13 item scale developed by Pitts et al. (2009). Collected data were analyzed with t-test, $x^2$-test, and ANOVA. Results: Mean scores for cervical cancer and HPV knowledge were $6.03{\pm}1.52$ and $8.15{\pm}1.75$ respectively and vaccination intention was 75.6%. HPV vaccination intention had significant differences depending on knowledge about cervical cancer (${\chi}^2=12.76$, p=.001), and HPV (${\chi}^2=9.00$, p=.003), education (${\chi}^2=12.24$, p=.002), sexual intercourse after first meeting (${\chi}^2=11.79$, p=.003), and sexual education in the military service (${\chi}^2=12.27$, p=.001). Conclusion: When planning education program for men in military service, it is necessary to consider include content to increase knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV.
