  • GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) is now being widely used in both civilian and military applications where accurate positioning and timing information are required and it is considered as a representative convergence technique in IT-Military application techniques. However, GNSS has low sensitivity level of GNSS receivers and is vulnerable to jamming signal, since the signals come from the satellite located at approximately 20,000 Km above the earth. The studies for the anti-jamming techniques in military applications have been passively performed in the domestic, because the information related GNSS are dependent on the countries that have GNSS. In this paper, we show the effect of jammer ERP by analyzing the link budget of GPS J/S power as a function of distance between jammer and receiver. Also, we categorize the anti-jamming techniques based on the functional block diagram of GNSS receiver structure and analyze the recent anti-jamming GNSS products and their technologies developed in domestic and foreign countries.

  • International interests in chemical warfare agents (CWAs) have been increased recently because of the use of sarin (GB) in Syrian civil war which caused around 1,300 casualties in 2013. After exposing to natural environments, CWAs undergo hydrolysis or photodegrade to non-toxic degradation byproducts. Generally, CWAs and their degradation byproducts are present at very low concentration (e.g. several ppb), thus pretreatment processes including separation, extraction and concentration are required prior to any analyses. Liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction (SPE) are common techniques to pretreat environmental samples. Recently, a novel pretreatment method, liquid phase miecoextraction (LPME), has been applied to CWAs analysis, which could reduce amounts of solvent used but promote analytical efficiencies. Fundamental backgrounds of LPME and its application to CWAs analysis were reviewed.

  • If one were to say that war is political in its nature, then war could be one of the several ways of achieving political goals. Thus, the aspect of wars will, in certainty, be altered by the changes in political environment. Wars in the past broke out mainly due to ideological differences that ran to extremes and were of high intensity. However, wars today show such restraints as controlling them beforehand or during the war in anticipation of the post-war situation. The trend of ideas to actualize such wars in the effective operation of airpower is on the rise. Airpower normally possesses speed and operative flexibility as well as capability of destruction, so it is possible to destroy the politically declared targets clearly. Previous airpower was merely employed as means of helping to vertically detouring the spatial obstacle that the ground forces encountered. Over the years, due to the speedy improvement of aviation technology and of ideas concerning wars in space, more advanced application has been developed. but they also were nothing more than an auxiliary role to facilotate the ground forces, that needed a longer effective range of firepower and did not become forces with the right of self-determination, that is, the fact of decisive war that makes its outcome. However, under transitional strategic environment like that of the present, Airpower possesses not only the capability to operate as a decisive means of war but also as theories to support it. The advancement in air technology has enabled supremacy over targets in depth, and the development of electronic technology has empowered the improvement of degree of destruction but also triumphant war by means of an overwhelming supremacy in a relatively short period. Thus, the method of systematic destruction that accomplishes the stated goals while rejecting the damage of accumulative destruction has been realized. The progress of such a concept has also proved that the counter-force strategy that has been developed in nuclear strategy is useful in conventional warfare as well. Therefore, it can be said that the under today's strategic environment airpower is an outstanding means of military strategy that can deeply affect to achieve the national objectives.

  • In this study, the weapon-target assignment problem arising in military application of operations research is considered. We reformulated the problem in order to simplify the solution methods based on genetic algorithms and heuristics. Since the problem is well known as NP-complete and cannot be solved in polynomial time, such solution methods have been widely used to obtain good solutions. Two chromosome representations--target number representation and permutation representation--in genetic algorithm are compared. In addition, a construction heuristic and three improving heuristics are developed. Several experiments under the condition of transitivity rules in weapon's kill probability have been accomplished. It shows that the construction heuristic and exchange-based improving heuristic guarantees good solutions within a second and the performance of construction heuristic is sensitive to transitivity rules.

  • With the development of information and communications technology(ICT), the concept of ubiquitous that we can communicate regardless of time and place appears. Due to the development of the technology delivering information, current society is called intellectualization society developed from informatization society. The intellectualization society is based on knowledge accumulated by processing information. The education methods are also developed into a concept of u-Learning applying the concept of ubiquitous from the concept of e-Learning using a computer. The military also points out education as a key policy. The aspect of war is changing to NCW(Network Centric Warfare) from platform centric warfare. Therefore, collecting and managing the war situations in real time is a key to controlling command. To this end, it needs to maximize individuals and groups' ability to cultivate the military with cutting-edge knowledge. Therefore, this study aims to look into methods to apply u-learning system in training and military actions according to changes in war environments and ICT.

  • The military is facing an era in which it must take advantage of technologies related with the 4th Industrial Revolution. The representative of the final application of the 4th Industrial Revolution technology is the unmanned system. Many unmanned systems have not yet been harnessed to the army, and it is assumed based on literature studies that improving familiarity with unmanned systems will have a positive effect on force strength in the future. To verify these assumptions, the structural equation model(SEM) was used for quantitative analysis. The results suggest that the increase in familiarity with unmanned systems induces the increase in availability of unmanned systems in each field, which eventually raises the expectation that overall ground force strength will increase. These results imply that the military should reinforce the curriculum that enhances the familiarity of the unmanned system in military education system.

  • Objective: The present study was to improve the graphic user interface (GUI) of a military computer-based training (CBT) system in terms of usability. Background: Existing studies have focused on usability evaluation of a particular GUI type such as sequence, hierarchy, or context type; however, few research has been conducted which identifies preferred GUI features based on a comparative analysis of different GUI types. Method: A comparative evaluation was conducted by 9 CBT design experts using a 7-point scale (1: very low, 4: neutral, and 7: very high) on hierarchy and context GUI types of a military CBT system in terms of 10 usability criteria. Then, preferred features of the hierarchy and context types being accommodated, a new GUI was developed and validated by 22 CBT users. Results: While the hierarchy type was found preferred by 1.6 times in terms of controllability to the context type, the opposite was found in terms of attractiveness, simplicity, and responsiveness by 0.6, 0.8, and 0.8 times, respectively. The proposed GUI was found superior to the hierarchy and context types in terms of accessibility and informativeness by more than 1.5 times, but inferior to the hierarchy and context type in terms of simplicity by 0.6 and 0.9 times, respectively. Conclusion: The new GUI developed by accommodating the preferred features of the hierarchy and context types improves usability in terms of accessibility and informativeness except simplicity. Application: The comparative analysis of various GUIs can be applied to develop an improved GUI in a systematic manner based on preferred features of the existing GUIs.

  • Sales of commercial-type cooling fans intended for application in military electronics are often discontinued during equipment production. This results in requirements for alternative fan selection as well as equipment performance and reliability tests, such as high-temperature operation testing. This study deals with alternative fan selection and verification methods that can be used during the production process. First, an alternative fan was selected by calculating the flow and pressure required to effectively cool the equipment, then the feasibility of the selected fan was verified using a reliable CFD heat dissipation analysis model. Following this, a high-temperature operation test was performed using the alternative fan in the equipment. Results demonstrated that the equipment satisfied its required function in a high-temperature environment, and the main parts as well as internal air temperature were found to be thermally stable.

  • Purpose: Recently, many quality issues are aroused in military forces, such as failures in K-series weapons, combat boots defects and 40mm ammunition explosion accident. To address these problems, this paper suggests to use so called, Defense Quality Score, which is based on Taguchi loss function and developed in this research. Methods: Current defense specification states only the minimum requirement to produce the military supplies. Therefore, it is not easy to indue the continuous quality improvement of the supplies. This research suggests to use the defense quality score which measures the current status of defense supplies'quality characteristics. Results: We applied the defense quality score concept into the hot pepper sauce and long time stockpiled ammunition. We first categorize the quality characteristics into three categories, then assign the certain amount of score based on the importance of the characteristics. Lastly, we applied the modified Taguchi loss function to calculate the achieved score of the characteristics. The perfect score is 100 and the closer to the score, the better product it indicates. Conclusions: In this research, we developed the modified Taguchi loss function to apply into the korean defense supplies. The loss function is utilized to calculate the achieved level of satisfaction of the supplies based on the defense specifications. The application of defense quality score may help to stimulate the continuous quality improvement and encourage the good will quality competition among the military providers.
