Analysis of mathematical connection components of the trigonometric ratio tasks in middle school and survey of teachers' perceptions and practical measures (중학교 삼각비 단원 과제의 수학적 연결성 구성요소 분석 및 교사의 인식과 실천적 방안 조사)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mathematical connection components of the tasks included in the trigonometric ratio unit of 3rd grade middle school textbook based on the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum and investigate teachers' perceptions and practical measures regarding these components. To this end, we analyzed the characteristics of mathematical connection tasks included in the trigonometric ratio units in nine types of 3rd grade middle school mathematics textbooks, and we conducted a questionnaire survey and interviews with one in-service math teachers in pre interview and with two in-service math teachers in this interview to investigate their perceptions and practical measures. As a result of the study, the number of tasks with external connection in the trigonometric ratio unit were less than those of internal connection. In addition, in terms of teachers' perceptions and practical measures, the perspective of analyzing tasks with mathematical connections varied depending on the teacher's perspective, and the practical measures varied accordingly. These findings are significant in that they reveal the relationship between mathematical tasks, teacher perceptions and measures to foster effectively students' mathematical connections.

The Instructional Influences of Cooperative Learning Strategies : Applying the LT Model to Middle School Physical Science Course (협동학습 전략의 교수 효과: 중학교 물상 수업에 LT 모델의 적용)

  • This study investigated the influences of the cooperative learning strategies upon students' achievement and their perceptions of learning environments in a middle school physical science course. Prior to instruction, the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking was administered, and its score was used as a blocking variable. Mid-term examination score was used as a covariate. For the treatment group with heterogeneous grouping, cooperative learning instruction (the Learning Together model) was used, which emphasized group reward, individual accountability, and role division. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. After instruction, an achievement test consisting of three subtests (knowledge, understanding, and application), and the perception questionnaire of classroom and laboratory environments, were administered. ANCOVA results revealed that there was a significant interaction between instruction and the level of logical reasoning ability although there were no significant differences in all three subtest scores of the achievement test. For the concrete operational reasoners, the treatment group performed better in the subtests of understanding and application than the control group. For students at the formal and transition levels, however, the treatment group scored lower than the control group. Significant interactions were also found in the perceptions of classroom environment and laboratory environment. For the concrete operational reasoners, the treatment group showed more positive perception than the control group. For the students at the formal and transition levels, the control group had positive perception than the treatment group. Educational implications are discussed.

Comparison of Mathematically Gifted Students and Non-gifted Students in Perception of Learning Environments and Affective Characteristics (수학영재학생들과 일반학생들의 학습관련 인식과 정의적 특성 비교)

  • The purpose of this research was to compare mathematically gifted students with non-gifted students in perception of learning environments, learning ability beliefs, and preference for problem-solving and task. Thirty-seven mathematically gifted students and 75 general students in middle school completed questionnaires about perceptions about mathematics. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$ test and t-test. Compared with general students, mathematically gifted students estimated their talents for mathematics higher, studied mathematics more, expended more time and effort to solving difficult problems, put learning mathematics itself as their primary purpose for studying mathematics and regarded inappropriate environments as the major obstacle to mathematics study. Mathematically gifted students perceived their parents' support higher, solved problem creatively, and had higher preference for challenging tasks.

Perception Survey on Characteristics of Scientific Literacy for Global Science-Technology-Society for Secondary School Students (글로벌 과학기술사회에 대비한 중등학생들의 과학적 소양 특성에 대한 인식)

  • This study investigated middle and high school students' perceptions of scientific literacy in the $21^{st}$ century through the survey. Subjects were 952 students from 13 participating schools. 482 middle school students and 470 high school students, 471 male students and 481 female were involved. The survey questionnaire asked which elements they thought would be important to be scientifically literate in the $21^{st}$ century and why they chose the elements. The results showed that most of the students tended to focus on orientation, content knowledge, and mindset. A large portion of female students showed orientation was the most important element. On the other hand, male students showed that scientific knowledge as well as orientation was important.

Adaptation of a single parent's child to school life: Focusing on individual resources, family resources and developed environmental resources (한부모가족 자녀의 학교생활적응 : 개인자원, 가족자원, 발달환경자원을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this research is to determine how effective individual resources, family resources and developed environmental resources are in assisting the adaptation of a single parent's child to school life. The subjects were 284 first-year middle-school students with a single parent who were included in the first year of the Korean Children and Youth Research Panel 2010 data. The data were statistically processed using SPSS 18.0software. The results were as follows. First, the research participants' adaptation to school life, self-esteem, self-resilience, and peer relations were all shown to have an average of higher than 2 on a 4-point scale. Positive perceptions of parenting attitudes were 2.87, and negative perceptions 2.38. Computer usage was high, scoring 2.42, but mobile phone usage was average, at 2.02. Of the participants, 83.8% did not participate in a club or extracurricular activity. Second, self-esteem, self-resilience, peer relations, and positive parenting attitudes were correlated positively with adaptation to school life, but relying on a mobile phone was correlated negatively. Third, regarding the consequences of the relative effectiveness of the variables for adaptation to school life, as self-esteem, self-elasticity, and positive perceptions of parenting attitudes increased, Adaptation of a single parent's child to school life was more successful. Additionally, as annual family income and reliance on mobile phones increased, students' adaptation to school was less successful.

The Influence of Students' Perception of Tutor's roles on Deep Learning, Achievement, and Course Evaluation in Online Gifted Education Program (온라인 영재교육 프로그램에서 중학생의 튜터 역할에 대한 인식이 심층학습, 학업성취, 수업평가에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the relationships among middle school students' perceptions on the roles of online tutor, their deep learning, achievement, and overall evaluation of learning experiences in the context of inquiry based online gifted mathematics and science learning. For this purpose, 249 middle school students who took online course were surveyed about their perceptions on the degree to which their tutor performed the roles as an online tutor. The students were also asked about the activities which indicate deep learning approaches and overall course experiences such as the level of satisfaction, understanding and engagement in the course. The regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships of students' perceptions on the roles of online tutor, deep learning, achievement, and overall course experiences. The results first showed that the roles of online tutor which affects students' deep learning approach such as high-order learning, integrative learning, reflective learning were the role as a subject matter and evaluation expert. Among the sub variables of deep learning approach the variable that was related to students' overall achievement was the use of high-order learning strategy. Second, the achievement in inquiry task was related to the role of tutor as a guide of learning process and method. Third, students' overall course evaluations such as the level of satisfaction, understanding and engagement were not related to any role of tutor.

A Study on the Perception of Obesity by Age and the Attitude toward Weight Control (연령별 비만에 대한 인식 및 체중 조절에 대한 태도)

  • Along with the increasing interests of modem-day society toward topics of health and beauty, various studies are being actively conducted on the effects of diet for obesity prevention, and separate from aspects of disease prevention and health promotion. This study aimed to examine individual perceptions of obesity by age, and to prepare basic data for implementing an age-based weight control system, by comparing attitudes toward weight control. The research and analysis were conducted using questionnaires, provided to high school students(teenagers, 189 students), college students(20 or older, 116 students), and adults(30 or over, 88 adults) living in Daegu City. In terms of the respondents' perceptions of obesity, among those who described themselves as overweight, only about 10% were actually proven to be overweight. Also, significantly more female students than male students perceived themselves as overweight, despite the fact that they were in a normal weight range(p<0.007). There was no significant difference in the cause of obesity by gender, but it was found to be attributed to a lack of exercise for teenagers, and poor eating habits for those in their twenties and thirties. Concerning the intention to participate in a weight management class, the female teenagers showed significantly more interest than the male teenagers(p<0.017). Also, with regard to the respondents' attitudes toward weight control, the teenage females showed significantly higher interest in weight control than the teenage males p<0.003 and those in their twenties p<0.001. Moreover, regarding the period in which the respondents became most interested in weight, the teenage male students were most interested in weight during their middle school years and teenage females became most interested during their high school years. Therefore, the information from this study leads us to propose there is a need to correct the suggested reckless dieting that is occurring within an appearance-based society, as well as a need to establish a systematic weight control system, along with gathering subsequent basic data.

The relationship between students' perceptions and practicability of the "Me and My Family Relations" unit and Family strength among middle school students (나와 가족관계' 단원에 대한 중학생의 긍정적 인식, 실천성 인식과 가족건강성)

  • This study aims at investigating how middle school students perceive the content of the 'Me and My Family Relations' unit in the technology and home economics textbook, act on such perceptions and how this connects with their healthy family relations. In addition, the study also points at inquiring into what kind of differences and mutual influences can be found in the above-mentioned three factors according to family environment. With this objective. this research has analyzed survey data conducted on 401 7th grade middle school students residing in Incheon Greater city, collected by the random sampling method. The findings are as follow: First, the students were found to have positive perceptions on the 'family relations and communication' unit in the technology and home economics text book. However. they were also found to perceive that the content was not as realizable in their everyday family lives. Second, the number of students who perceived their family lives to be healthy was found to be quite high. The students perceived their family lives to be healthy projecting from such aspects as the degree of gratification and affection, extent of family bonding, communication patterns, and problem solving abilities, in the same order. In addition, the higher the families' socio-economic level, and in the cases that the students had working mothers and the fathers held higher degrees, the degree to which the families were perceived to be healthy was higher. Third, in investigating the influence that such factors as the students' family environment, the degree that students perceived the text book content positively, and the degree that the students perceive the content to be realizable have on healthy family relations, among these factors, the students' perceived degree of how healthy their family relations are had the most bearing over the above-mentioned factors. The second influential factor on how healthy family relations are was the family's affectional environment, found to be more influential than such factors as family type, the mother's employment status, living standards, and the parents' educational level. On the other hand, the perceived level of realizability was found to have a lower influence on the students' family relations than the perceived positivity.

Student Perceptions of Different Feedback Givers' Written Responses

  • This study aims to investigate the different opinions about feedback given to high level Middle School students about their writing.18 students in the Gifted Program participated in the study. They were divided into three groups through their presurvey answers according to their language learning opportunities and genders. Students language self-assessment was compared with achievement as well. Three times of students' written work were collected. They then received feedback from the teacher and their two peers respectively. With the teachers' and peers' feedback, they completed their final draft. The study then examines how much the students take feedback practically from the different feedback givers. Examples of formative and corrective feedback were arranged to find out the differences in the students practice when giving and taking feedback. These Gifted class students showed that they didn't care much about who gave them the feedback, instead they cared more about how much language competence they presumed the feedback giver had. Implications of the findings are discussed and future study is suggested.

Middle School Students' Perceptions of Sexual Violence (성폭력에 대한 중학생의 인식과 경험)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the experience of sexual violence and sexual violence education. The data were collected from June 19 to July 14. 2000 using the questionnaire. The Subjects of this study consisted of 736 middle school students in six provinces(Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Kyunggi, Kangwon, Kyungbuk). Data were analyzed using percentage, mean standard deviation. ANOVA. and Duncan test. The results were as follows: 1. About sixty-two percent of the subjects was educated for sexual violence. 2. About twenty-five percent of the subjects experienced sexual harassment, 12.1% of the subjects experienced serious sexual contact, and 2.0% of the subjects was raped. 3. The mean score of misconception related sexual violence was $2.86{\pm}0.47$. 4. The mean score of misconception related sexual violence showed significant differences in experience of education(t=-3.83. P<.0001), in delayed time of education(F=6.33. P<.0001) and in reading of pornomagazine(F=2.03. P<.05). 5. The mean score of misconception related sexual violence showed significant differences in experience of sexual harassment(t=-1.92. P<.05) and in experience of serious sexual contact (t=-2.41. P<.01). 6. There was a significant differences in misconception related sexual violence between boy and girl(t=5.79. P<.0001). According to the above results, realistic and future-directed sexual violence education materials should be developed for middle school students. This information will provide useful data to promote a more systemic, desirable and sexual violence education.
