  • Background: The growing prevalence of overweight and/or obese children is an important public health problem in both developed and developing countries. Although the association of obesity between parents and their children is well known, its underlying mechanisms are not well established. Purpose: This meta-analysis examined parent-child (PC) relationships in obesity and identified factors such as world region and country income level that may influence this relationship. Methods: We identified all related studies published between January 1, 2015 and May 31, 2020 by conducting a literature search using the MeSH terms "obesity," "overweight," "body mass index," "parent," "child," "associate," and "relate" in the PubMed database in English. Results: The meta-analysis of 23 studies that reported an odds ratio (OR) for parent and child obesity associations found a significant association between parents and children who were overweight or obese (pooled OR, 1.97; 95% confidence interval, 1.85-2.10). A meta-regression analysis was used to examine the sources of interstudy heterogeneity. The association between parent and child obesity was higher in Asia than in Europe and the Middle East and higher in high-income countries than in middle-or low-income countries. In addition, a higher association between parent and child obesity was found when both parents were obese than when only the father or mother was obese. This study from multiple countries indicates a significant PC relationship in weight status that varies according to PC pair type, parent and child weight statuses, world region, and country income level. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the risk of childhood obesity is greatly influenced by parental weight status and indicate that parents could play an important role in preventing child obesity.

  • The aim of this study was to understand the difference between the image of social-workers and nurses perceived by middle school and high school students, and determine the experience related to social workers and the role of social workers projected in the media. The subjects of this study were 386 students of middle and high school located in S city. Data were collected from Oct. 15, 2013 to Nov. 23, 2013 and analyzed using the SPSS win 18.0 program. A comparison of the image of nurses and social workers in two groups showed that middle school students tended to have a more positive image of nurses than high school students, and the image of nurses appeared to be more positive than that of social workers. As a result of analyzing the contents exposed in media, the students received most of their information on social workers from TV. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strategy to help students choose a major or a job by reinforcing mass media monitoring based on TV, which may have a major impact on the image of social workers and provide them with the correct information on the profession.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed at investigating the relationship between internet game addiction and emotional and behavioral characteristics of students both in the 5th and 6th grade of elementary school and in middle school. Methods : Two elementary schools and two middle schools were chosen to participate. The students completed selfreport questionnaires designed by the authors, called the Internet Game Addiction Scale, Korean youth self-report (K-YSR). Results : Compared to previous studies, the rates of those in the obvious game addiction group were much lower in this study. We defined the upper 10% of internet game addiction scores as a high risk user group and the lower 10% as a control group. There were significant differences between the groups with respect to the the ages at which internet gaming began, the frequency of game play per week, and the average length of each game playing session. Significant associations were also found between the level of internet game addiction and the withdrawn and delinquency subscales of the K-YSR. However, the association between game addiction and the withdrawn subscale was found only in middle school students. Conclusion : The findings from this study suggested that withdrawn and delinquent behaviors could be predictors of internet game addiction. Results also suggested the importance of early childhood intervention for preventing the development of more severe psychopathology in early adolescence.

  • The ideal of middle class British masculinity and the representative of the new Victorian respectability, the ″gentleman″ was difficult to define amidst the class mobility and social change of the nineteenth century. Was the gentleman to be identified by class and by money\ulcorner By behavior and clothing\ulcorner By religion and morality\ulcorner This essay focuses on the problem of the ″gentleman″ as it was debated in the Victorian era and as it was reflected in the biography and work of the mid-nineteenth century's most important English writer, Charles Dickens. I examine the critical debate surrounding the Victorian idea of the ″gentleman″ by comparing the arguments of Shirley Robin Letwin's The Gentleman in Trollope(1982) and Robin Gilmour's The Idea of the Gentleman in the Victorian Novel(1981). Letwin views the ″gentleman″ as largely transcending class structure, while Gilmour's more historically-conscious view locates the gentleman as emerging out of, and even enabling, the class negotiations of this period. Against the backdrop of such debates, I discuss Charles Dickens's struggles with the idea of the gentleman in theory and in practice. In his novels, especially his semi-autobiographical bildungsromane about the growth and development of boys into adulthood, Dickens prominently engages with the identity and definition of the gentleman. As I demonstrate in this essay, this interest originated from Dickens's own childhood trauma and his subsequent drive to attain gentility, a necessity complicated by the vicissitudes of his personal and professional life.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social networks and perceived self-competence. The subject were 350 third and sixth graders selected from a public elementary school in Seoul. The children were administered the Pattison Psychosocial Network Inventory and The Self Perception Profile for Children. Three major questions are addressed; l)age changes 2)sex differences, and 3) the relation between the characteristics of social networks and self-perceived competence. Data were analyzed by pearson's product moment correlation, one-way ANOVA. Proportion measures were also used since they had allowed for the observation of relationship between two subsets of people within given categories(e.g.,the number of relatives divided by the number of relatives plus nonrelatives). The effects of age and sex of child on the number and daily contact with kin, nankin, peers, adults, males, and females were found. Sixth graders had a larger number of adults than third graders. While children had a greater number of adults than peers, they had more contact with peers than with adults in their network. It was found that boys had greater number of people in their network than girls. And boys had a larger number of and more contact with males, and girls had a larger number of more contact with females. The structure of childrens' social networks structure were correlated with perceived self-competence.

  • Using the second year data of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) elementary 4 panel, this study attempted to elucidate variables related to elementary school 5th graders' life satisfaction and how the variables are clustered in each gender. Analyzing the data of 2378 5th graders (boys 1180, girls 1084) indicated that variables related to their life satisfaction were self-esteem, parenting style, peer attachment, grade satisfaction, and school adjustment. Both boys and girls were clustered into three clusters. The cluster 1 children indicated the highest degrees of self-esteem, peer attachment, grade satisfaction and school adjustment levels, and they perceived parenting style more positively than the children from the other clusters. The cluster 3 children showed the opposite trends to the cluster 1 children in each of the five variables and the cluster 2 showed middle levels in all of the variables. The characteristics of the three clusters were analyzed in terms of the differences of children's life satisfaction and explanatory variables of life satisfaction.

  • Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is an unusual intrathoracic blastoma presenting in childhood and charac-terized by a biphasic neoplastic population of undifferentiated, small round blastemal cells and larger spindle-shaped sarcomatous cells with entrapped benign epithelial-lined structures. We experienced the cytologic features of PPB in imprint smear from the pleural-based huge mass of the middle lobe of the right lung in a 4-year-old boy. The smears showed high cellularity composed of small ovoid blastemal elements and scattered spindle mesenchymal tumor cells. Lobectomy and pathologic investigation confirmed the diagnosis. PPB seems to be a tumor in which accurate diagnosis may be achieved by cytoiogy if appro-priate clinical information were given. Timely and accurate diagnosis of PPB by cytology paves the way for attempting preoperative treatment in future cases.

  • Background : Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) can be controlled by vaccination. Because rubella is typically a childhood disease, occurring predominantly in the 5 to 14 year age group, female school teachers nay be a high-risk population for CRS. Objectives : To determine the prevalence rate of rubella antibodies in school teachers of child bearing age. Methods : The study population consisted of primary, middle and high school teachers of child bearing age. The subjects were aged 35 years and younger, and consented to immunoglobulin (Ig) level testing using the ELISA method. Results : The positive rate of IgG was 77.9% in the study subjects (n=314). Sixty-three teachers (21.4%) were susceptible to rubella infection. Thirty-seven teachers (11.8%) had a history of rubella vaccination. Among the female teachers with no vaccination history, the proportion of negative IgM and IgG was 21.7%, and the proportion of positive IgM was 2.9%. Seventy-nine percent of the study subjects did not know that they should not become pregnant for three months after receiving the rubella vaccine. Conclusion : School teachers of child bearing age should be considered a high risk group for CRS, and should be vaccinated if they are found to be seronegative.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the allocation criteria types in transferring economic resources to adult children from the adult-childhood of children to parent's death based on theoretical backgrounds. The research results can be summarized as follows: 1) The mean of allocation criterion of exchange was the highest, the next was the criterion of compensation, and the criterion related birth factors was the lowest. 2) Allocation criteria dimensions of economic resources transfers composed of compensation, exchange, and birth factors were classified into 4 types: $\circled1$ the type that parents transfer to compensate economic status of children, $\circled2$ the type that parents transfer more resources to children who take more care of their parents, $\circled3$ the type that parents transfer more resources to primogeniture or sons, $\circled4$ the mixed type that uses the exchange criterion, the compensation criterion, and the criterion related birth factors. 3) The variables which have significance on the types of allocation criteria were age, the number of children, and marital status. The results of the study suggests the implications of income redistribution policy, financial resource management and saving products development, and the law to motivate care of parents.
