Numerical Prediction on Snowfall Intensity in the Mountainous Coastal Region

  • The formation of a severe snow storm occurred in the mountainous coastal region near Mt. Taegualyang and Kangnung city in the eastern part of Korea was investigate from 0900LST, December 7 through 9, 2002, using MM5 model. As synoptic scale easterly wind induced a great amount of moisture from the East Sea into the inland coastal region and sea-breeze further induced more moisture from the basin toward the top of the mountain side. The lifted moisture toward the mountain top was cooled down along the eastern slope of the mountain and near the mid of the mountain the moisture was much cooled down with relative humidity of 100% under the air temperature below $O^{\circ}C$, resulting in the formation of snow. Relative humidity of 100% generally occurred at the 5km away from the coast toward the inland mountain and the band of 100% RH was parallel to the coastal line. The 100% band coincided with minimum air temperature band and line.

동해 덕산항에 생육하는 거머리말(Zostera marina L.) 개체군의 생물계절학과 형태 변이 (Phonology and Morphometrics Change of Zostera marina L. Population at Duksan Port in the Eastern Coast of Korea)

  • 동해 덕산항에 생육하는 거머리말(Zostera matina L.) 개체군의 생물계절학과 형태 변이를 1998년 3월부터 2000년 8월까지 조사하였다. 거머리말의 계절에 따른 생육관계, 생육밀도, 생물량과 환경요인을 비교 분석하였다. 수괴내 영양염 농도는 계절에 따라 유의한 차이를 보였으며, 질산염은 하계에 낮았으나, 암모니아는 높은 농도로 나타났다. 거머리말 생육지에서 퇴적물의 유기물 함량은 하계보다 동계에 높게 나타났다. 영양지의 길이는 54.2(3월0~100.0cm (10월), 생식지의 길이는 97.8(3월)~213.0 cm(7월) 범위로 다양하였으며, 생식지는 3월 중순부터 9월초까지 출현하였다. 생식지의 개화는 수온이 12$^{\circ}C$부터 시작하여 21$^{\circ}C$까지 지속되었으며, 열매 성숙은 수온이 22~$25^{\circ}C$범위에서 나타났다. 영구 반형구(0.25$m^2$)내의 생육밀도는 38~136(평균 80.3$\pm$6.5), 생물량은 190(10월)~922 g dry wt m$^{-2}$ (6월)로 계절에 따라 유의한 차이(P<0.01)를 보였다. 식물체의 형태적 형질과 이화학적 요인들과는 유의한 상관관계를 보이지 않았으나, 계절에 따른 수온의 변화는 거머리말 생식지의 생육단계와 영양지의 생장에 영향을 미치는 것으로 판단되었다.

블로킹에 의한 2014년 2월 동해안 지방 폭설 분석 (Analysis of the February 2014 East Coast Heavy SnowFall Case Due to Blocking)

  • This study investigated the cause of the heavy snowfall that occurred in the East Coast of Korea from 6 February to 14 February 2014. The synoptic conditions were analyzed using blocking index, equivalent potential temperature, potential vorticity, maritime temperature difference, temperature advection, and ground convergence. During the case period, a large blocking pattern developed over the Western Pacific causing the flow to be stagnant, and there was a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Korean Peninsula because of this arrangement. The case period was divided into three parts based on the synoptic forcing that was responsible for the heavy snowfall; detailed analyses were conducted for the first and last period. In the first period, a heavy snowfall occurred over the entire Korean Peninsula due to strong updrafts from baroclinic instability and a low pressure caused by potential vorticity located at the mid-troposphere. In the lower atmosphere, a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Eastern Korea intensified the easterly airflow and created a convergence zone near the ground which strengthened the upslope effect of the Taebaek Mountain range with a cumulative fresh snowfall amount of 41 cm in the East Coast region. In the last period, the cold air nestled in the Maritime Province of Siberia and Manchuria strengthened much more than that in the first half and extended to the East Sea. The temperature difference between the 850 hPa air and the SST was large and convective clouds developed over the sea. The highest cumulative fresh snow amount of 39.7 cm was recorded in the coastal area during this period. During the entire period, vertically oriented equivalent potential temperature showed neutral stability layer that helped the cloud formation and development in the East Coast. The 2014 heavy snowfall case over the East Coast provinces of Korea were due to: 1) stagnation of the system by blocking pattern, 2) the dynamic effect of mid-level potential vorticity of 1.6 PVU, 3) the easterly air flow from North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system, 4) the existence of vertically oriented neutral stable layer, and 5) the expansion of strong cold air into the East Sea which created a large temperature difference between the air and the ocean.

동아시아의 30°N부근에서 여름철 태풍 강도변화 (Variations of the Summertime Tropical Cyclone Intensity near 30°N in East Asia)

  • In this paper, changes in the intensity (e.g., central pressure and maximum sustained wind speed) of Tropical Cyclone (TC) in summer in the regions located at $30^{\circ}N$ in East Asia from 1988 to 1991 were found. The intensity of TC from 1991 to 2007 was much higher than that of TC from 1965 to 1988. The reason for this was that the frequency of TCs passing China from 1991 to 2007 was much lower than that of TCs from 1965-1988 because a northeasterly wind caused by high-pressure circulation in East Asia got severer along the East Asian coast. Instead, TCs moved from the eastern region of the Tropical West Pacific to Korea and Japan mainly after passing the East China Sea due to the low-pressure circulation strengthened in the subtropical waters of East Asia. In addition, low Vertical Wind Shear (VWS) was created along the mid-latitude regions of East Asia and the main path of TCs from 1991 to 2007. Most of the regions in the Northwestern Pacific showed higher Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from 1991 to 2007, and had a good environment where TCs were able to maintain a higher intensity on the mid-latitude. In particular, a low sensible heat flux occurred due to high snow depth in East Asia in the spring of 1991 to 2007. Accordingly, the lower layer of East Asia showed high-pressure circulation, and the sea surrounding East Asia showed low-pressure circulation. Thus, the typical west-high, east-low pattern of winter atmospheric pressure was shown. The possibility of snowfall in East Asia in spring to be used as a factor for predicting the summer intensity of TC in the mid-latitude regions of East Asia was insinuated. The characteristics of TC in a low-latitude region were the same in Korea. The latest intensity of TCs got higher, and the landing location of TCs gradually changed from the west coast to the south coast.

Climate-related range shifts of Ardisia japonica in the Korean Peninsula: a role of dispersal capacity

  • Background: Many studies about climate-related range shift of plants have focused on understanding the relationship between climatic factors and plant distributions. However, consideration of adaptation factors, such as dispersal and plant physiological processes, is necessary for a more accurate prediction. This study predicted the future distribution of marlberry (Ardisia japonica), a warm-adapted evergreen broadleaved shrub, under climate change in relation to the dispersal ability that is determined by elapsed time for the first seed production. Results: We introduced climate change data under four representative concentration pathway (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) scenarios from five different global circulation models (GCMs) to simulate the future distributions (2041~2060) of marlberry. Using these 20 different climate data, ensemble forecasts were produced by averaging the future distributions of marlberry in order to minimize the model uncertainties. Then, a dispersal-limited function was applied to the ensemble forecast in order to exam the impact of dispersal capacity on future marlberry distributions. In the dispersal-limited function, elapsed time for the first seed production and possible dispersal distances define the dispersal capacity. The results showed that the current suitable habitats of marlberry expanded toward central coast and southern inland area from the current southern and mid-eastern coast area in Korea. However, given the dispersal-limited function, this experiment showed lower expansions to the central coast area and southern inland area. Conclusions: This study well explains the importance of dispersal capacity in the prediction of future marlberry distribution and can be used as basic information in understanding the climate change effects on the future distributions of Ardisia japonica.

황해 동부 연안의 홀로세 해수면 변화: 대리기록과 관측자료를 통한 재검토 (Holocene Sea Level Changes in the Eastern Yellow Sea: A Brief Review using Proxy Records and Measurement Data)

  • 황해 동부 해안의 홀로세 해수면 변동 특성을 이해하고 시기 별 상승추세를 비교하기 위하여 지질학적 대리기록과 기기관측 자료를 통합하여 분석하였다. 홀로세 동안 황해의 해수면은 초기에 약 10 mm/yr의 속도로 빠르게 상승하고 중기를 거쳐 후기로 갈수록 해수면 상승률은 1 mm/yr 정도로 둔화되며, 20세기 해수면은 홀로세 후기보다 다소 빠르게 상승하였다. 빠른 상승으로 알려진 현재 해수면 상승률은 홀로세 초기와 중기의 상승추세와 비교할 때 사실 훨씬 낮거나 비슷하게 나타난다. 최근 조위계 자료는 황해 해수면이 21세기로 갈수록 상승률이 높아지고 있음을 나타낸다. 이러한 상승 추세는 전 지구적 해수면 변화와 일치한다. 추가적으로, 연구지역에서 현재의 해수면 상승 추세는 이산화탄소 농도와 해수표층온도의 증가율과 대비되며, 이는 인간활동에 수반된 지구온난화의 신호이다. 그러므로 황해 동부와 전세계의 해양에서 관찰되는 현 지구온난화에 의해 야기된 해수면 변화를 '인류세' 해수면 변화라고 제안한다. 이 해수면변화는 조위계와 인공위성 고도계 같은 기기관측을 기반으로 하며, 계측시대를 의미한다. 이와 같이, 황해의 홀로세 해수면 변동은 대리기록으로, '인류세' 해수면은 기기관측을 기반으로 한다.

韓反島 中部東海岸 低位海成段丘의 對比와 編年 (The comparison and chronology of the lower marine terraces in the mid-eastern coast of Korean peninsula)

  • 제4기 후기에 있어서도 지반의 지속적인 융기가 진행되고 있는 것으로 보이는 한국 의 동해안에 있어서는, 어느 한 간빙기 해성면의 동정이 이루어질 경우, 이 지형면을 시간기 준면으로 한 제4기 해성면 전체의 대비와 편년도 가능하다고 생각된다. 한국의 동해안에 있 어서 시간기준면으로 이용 될 수 있는 지형면은, 단구면과 퇴적물의 특징이 가장 잘 보존되 어 있을 것으로 보이는 최종간빙기의 해수면이라고 생각된다. 본고에서는 한반도의 중부 동 해안에 있어서 최종간빙기의 해수면을 확정하기 위한 작업의 일환으로, 단구면의 구정선고 도, 단구퇴적물의 특징, 그리고 고토양 및 화석 주빙하결빙구조 등을 지표로, 묵호-강릉해안 에 분포하는 저위해성단구의 대비와 상대편년을 시도하였다. 연구의 결과, 저위해성단구 I면 은 최종간빙기 극상기(산소 동위체 스테이지 5e), 그리고 II면은 최종간빙기의 중반(5c) 혹은 후기(5a)의 지형면으로 편년되었다. 이는 최종간빙기의 해성면을 I면 밖에 인정하지 않은 기 존의 연구결과와 다른 점으로서, 추후 이에 대한 상세한 검토가 요청된다. 저위해성단구 I면 과 II면의 구정선고도는 각각 18m, 10m이며, 이중에서도 저위해성단구 I면은 분포의 보편성 으로 보아 한국 동해안의 제4기 지사편집시 시간기준면으로서의 이용가치가 크다고 생각된 다.

서남해안지역(西南海岸地域)의 지형발달(地形發達)에 미친 지질조건(地質條件) (Effects of Geological Conditions on the Geomorphological Development of the Southwestern Coastal Regions of Korea)

  • The geotectonics and geomorphic structure of Korea resulted from the Song-rim Disturbance and the Daebo orogenic movements. Afterward this mountainous peninsula underwent several geological changes on a small scale, and it was also claimed that the steady rising of the elevated peneplain of the eastern coast and the submerging of the southwestern coastal area are largely due to the tilted block movement. These views have been generally accepted good in several ways, but they are limited in range or lacking in theoretical integration. The present writer investigated the geology of the Mt. Chi-ri-san and the Honam coal mining area for a geological map in 1965, respectively. The results of these studies convinced the present writer that the conventional views, which were based upon a theory of lateral pressure should be reconsidered in many respects, and more recent studies made it clear that the morphological development in the southwestern area can be better explained by the orogenic movement and rock control. The measurement of submerging speed of the western coastal area (Pak. Y. A., 1969) and a new account on the geology and tectonics of the Mid-central region of South Korea (Kim O.J., 1970) act as an encouragement to a new explanation. The present writer's researches on the extreme southwestern portion of the peninsula show that the steady submerging of this area cannot be attributed to a simple downthrown block phenomenon caused by block movement. It is no more than the result of the differential movement of uplifting in the eastern and western coastal areas and the rising of sea-level in the post-glacial period. This phenomenon could be easily explained by the comparison of the rate of rise in sea-level and amount of heat flow between Korea and other areas in the world. The existance of the erosional planes in the Sobaik-San ranges also provide an evidence of an upheaval in the western coast area. Though the Sobaik-San ranges largely follow the direction of the Sinian system. They consist of the numerous branches, whose trends run more or less differently from their main trend because of the disharmonic folding, are converged into Mt. Sobaik-San and Chupungryung. The undulation of the land is not wholely caused by orogenic movements, where as the present writer confirmed that the diversity of morphological development is the direct reflection of geological conditions such as rocks and processes which constitute the basic elements of geomorphic structure. An east-west directed mountain range which could be named as Hansan mountain range, was claimed to be oriented by the joint control. The geological conditions such as a special erosion and weathering of agglomerate and breccia tuff usually produce pot-hole like submarine features which cause the whirling phenomenon at the southwestern coast channel.

동해 울진바다목장에 서식하는 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)의 식성 (Feeding Habits of Paralichthys olivaceus in the Uljin Marine Ranching Area)

  • The feeding habits of Paralichthys olivaceus in the Uljin marine ranching area, located on the mid-eastern coast of Korea, were studied from January to November 2009. In total, 381 specimens were collected; fish ranged in size from 15.4 to 59.0 cm in total length. P. olivaceus is a carnivore, mainly consuming other fishes and crustaceans. The prey items of P. olivaceus changed ontogenetically. Small individuals fed on decapod crustaceans while large ones fed heavily on other fishes. The diet of P. olivaceus varied seasonally. Fish comprised the main prey items throughout the year. The stomach contents index (SCI) of each size class increased and the dietary breadth index (DBI) of each size class decreased as individuals grew.

한국의 유역별 호우변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on Variability of Extreme Precipitation by Basin in South Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 호우의 변화경향을 유역별로 분석하였다. 이를 위해 한국을 6개의 유역으로 나누고 호우와 관련된 7개의 극한강수지수를 분석하여 변화지속성을 파악하였다. 호우량은 호우일수보다 증가경향이 더 지속적이다. 일강수량이 50mm 이상 강수일수와 95 퍼센타일 이상 강수량의 증가경향이 가장 지속적이다. 호우관련지수는 분석기간 동안 대부분 증가경향이지만 한강 유역, 낙동강 상류지역, 동해안 지역이 다른 유역에 비해 증가경향이 뚜렷하다. 금강 유역과 섬진강 유역은 호우의 증가경향이 통계적으로 유의하지 않고 변동성이 크다. 호우의 증가경향은 1970년대 중반 이후 한강과 낙동강 유역에서 지속적이지만 2000년대 중반 이후 증가경향이 지속적으로 나타나는 지점들이 감소한다. 이는 최근 호우의 빈도와 강도가 더욱 불규칙해지고 있음을 의미한다.
