  • An analytical 2-dimensional model to explain the small signal and noise properties of an AlGaN/GaN modulation doped field effect transistor has been developed. The model is based on the solution of two-dimensional Poisson's equation. The developed model explains the influence of Noise in ohmic region (Johnson noise or Thermal noise) as well as in saturated region (spontaneous generation of dipole layers in the saturated region). Small signal parameters are obtained and are used to calculate the different noise parameters. All the results have been compared with the experimental data and show an excellent agreement and the validity of our model.

  • This study investigated theoretically the properties of the spin transfer torque acting on a ferromagnet in a ferromagnet-normal metal-antiferromagnet junction. Earlier work showed that the angular dependence of the spin transfer torque can be a wavy-type if the junction satisfies a special symmetry. This paper reports a simple model analysis that allows a derivation of the wavy angular dependence without taking advantage of the symmetry. This result suggests that the wavy angular dependence can appear even when the symmetry is broken. As an illustration, the angular dependence was calculated as a function of the degree of the compensation at the normal metal-antiferromagnet interface. The implications of the result for the current-induced magnetization precession are discussed.

  • Substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) constructed by two metal planes and conductive vias in a dielectric substrate, have all the conductors connected each other and hence, cannot be biased by DC sources. We propose a new folded corrugated substrate integrated waveguide(FCSIW) that can be DC-biased. Since the proposed FCSIW replaces the SIW conducting vias by folded open subs, it can supply the DC sources. The FCSIW has better transmission characteristics and 30 % less width than the common corrugated substrate integrated waveguide(CSIW) having a serious leakage generation problem. The FCSIW shows better insertion loss(1.49 dB) compared with that(3.08 dB) of the CSIW measured for 154 mm length devices and averaged at 9~15 GHz frequency band. No leakage has been observed from crosstalk measurements of the FCSIW.

  • Sediments of Little Scioto (LS) River in Ohio was contaminated by poor disposal of creosote from Baker Wood Creosoting Facility. Among the primary compounds of creosote, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most common ingredient PAHs are known for toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds. There are many difficulties to remove the PAHs in nature environment because their characteristics are having a less water-solubility, volatile and low mobility properties as increasing the molecular weight. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (${\cdot}OH$) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) forms as well as high temperature (5000 K) and pressure (1000 atm) by a physico-chemical effects of ultrasound during a cavitation collapse can promote the degradation and desorption of PAHs in sediment And it can also produces shock wave and microjets which are able to change the size and surface of particle in solid-liquid system as one of physical effects. Therefore, we explored to understand the role of particle size, the effect of elimination for PAHs concentration by ultrasound and optimize the conditions for ultrasonic treatment. The condition of various size of particles (> $150{\mu}m$, < $150{\mu}m$) and solid-liquid ratio (12.5g/L, 25g/L) for the treatment was considered and ultrasonic power (430 W/L) with liquid - hexane extraction and microwave extraction method were applied after ultrasound treatment.

  • By using LHTL(Left-Handed Transmission Line) which is a form of a metamaterial and conventional RHTL (Right-Handed Transmission Line), we designed, fabricated and tested a broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler which is a basic circuit for I-Q vector signal generation. Synthetic LHTL and RHTL were implemented with capacitors and inductors only, that the size is minimized. Also, by implementing a Wilkinson power divider which is required for the suggested circuit using a synthetic RHTL, the size of whole circuit is only $11mm{\times}12mm$. For the frequency range 0.8~1.25 GHz, the phase difference at the outputs maintained $90^{\circ}{\pm}5^{\circ}$ and thus, a broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler could be made in a compact form. for the same frequency range, the insertion loss is less than 1.6 dB and return loss is more than 10.1 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the smallest and broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler for the frequency range and if the circuit is made with MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) technology, the size will be reduced much further.

  • Background: Considering the expenses of and difficulties in arsenic speciation by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS), alternative measurement methods should be useful, especially for large-scale research and projects. Objectives: A measurement method was developed for arsenic speciation using HPLC-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-AFS) as an alternative to HPLC-ICP-MS. Methods: Total arsenic and toxic arsenic species in some seafoods were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry coupled with hydride vapor generation (AAS-HVG) and HPLC-AFS, respectively. Recovery rate of arsenic species in seafood was evaluated by ultra sonication, microwave and enzyme (pepsin) for the optimal extraction method. Results: Limits of detection of HPLC-AFS for As3+, dimethylarsinate (DMA), monomethylarsonate (MMA) and As5+ were 0.39, 0.53, 0.60 and 0.64 ㎍/L, respectively. The average accuracy ranged from 97.5 to 108.7%, and the coefficient of variation was in the range of 1.2~16.7%. As3+, DMA, MMA and As5+ were detected in kelp, the sum of toxic arsenic in kelp was 40.4 mg/kg. As3+, DMA, MMA and As5+ were not detected in shrimp and squid, but total arsenic (iAS and oAS) content in shrimp and squid analyzed by AAS-HVG were 18.1 and 24.7 mg/kg, respectively. Conclusions: HPLC-AFS was recommendable for the quantitative analysis method of arsenic species. As toxic arsenic species are detected in seaweeds, further researches are needed for the contribution degree of seafood in arsenic exposure.

  • Glycyrrhizae Radix is an herbal medicine vulnerable to fungi. So there are regulations on mycotoxins. Therefore, in this study, the affect of various drying methods and additional gamma irradiation (10 kGy) was studied to suppress the microbial generation of Glycyrrhizae Radix. As a result of detecting and comparing microorganisms using the dry film method for samples prepared by each of natural, hot air, freezing, microwave drying and gamma irradiation, the affect of reducing microorganisms by microwave drying and gamma irradiation was confirmed. There was no statistically significant change in the content of the active compounds between the treatment groups.

  • In this paper, the development of wideband MIMO channel sounder and a pilot measurement result is described for research on the multi antenna radio propagation characteristics considering urban environment at microwave frequencies. We developed $4{\times}4$ MIMO(BW:100 MHz) channel sounder using the high speed switching mechanism and periodic pseudo random binary signals method considering next generation mobile communication system. A pilot measurement campaign at the urban area of Bundang is presented for confirmation of system performance. From the analysis of measurement data, wideband path loss exponent of 3.7 and 8 GHz band is 1.79 and 1.76. Average RMS delay spread is 200 ns and 42 ns respectively. From the experiment results, operation of this measurement system is confirmed considering research for a coverage, SNR and channel capacity in urban environment at microwave frequencies.

  • Okamoto cavity was modified to generate high power (2.45 GHz, 2 kW) He, N2 and Ar plasmas with WR-340 waveguide. Many factors which influence to the plasma generation were optimized and investigated for the spectroscopic properties of the He plasma generated. Some of the important factors are the diameter of the inner conductor, the distance between the inner and outer conductors and the distance between the tip of the inner conductor and the torch. After optimization for the He, two torches (a commercial mini torch for ICP and a tangential flow torch made locally) were compared and showed similar results for the helium plasma gas flow of 25 L/min~30 L/min. A tall torch (extended) was used to block the air in-flow and reduced the background intensity at 340 nm region (NH band). Emission intensity was measured for determination of halogen element in the aqueous solution with power and carrier gas flow rate. Electron number density and the excitation temperature were on the order of $3.67{\times}10^{11}/cm^3$ and 4,350 K, respectively. These values are similar or a bit smaller than other microwave plasmas. It has been possible to analyze aqueous samples. The detection limit for Cl (479.45 nm) was obtained to be 116 mg/L and needs analytical optimization for the better performance.
