  • In the present study, hot forging process for a lower arm connector of an automobile was investigated. An FEM code, DEFORM-3D, was used to analyze the process and the process parameters, such as temperature, strain and strain rate, were obtained. The microstructure of the connector was predicted by applying the Sellars and Yada microstructure evolution models to the process parameters. The method of microstructure prediction used in the present study seems to be effective for the quality assurance of a forged automotive product.

  • High temperature deformation behavior and prediction of final microstructure after forming of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated in this study. Equiaxed and Widmanstatten microstructures of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared as initial microstructures and compression tests were performed to obtain the flow curves at high temperatures (700∼110$0^{\circ}C$) and various strain rates (10$^{-4}$ ∼10$^2$/s). From the results of compression test, strain rate sensitivity (m) and activation energy (Q) were calculated and used to establish constitutive equation. To predict the final microstructure after farming, finite element analysis was performed considering the microstructural parameters such as grain size and volume fraction of second phase.

  • Two High Tensile Strength Steel (EH47) plates with thickness of 70 mm were butt-welded together by multi-pass Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), also the hardness and welding residual stress were investigated experimentally. Based on Thermal-Elastic-Plastic Finite Element (TEP FE) computation, the thermal cycles during entire welding process were obtained, and the HAZ hardness of multi-pass butt welded joint was computed by the hardenability algorithm with considering microstructure evolution. Good agreement of HAZ hardness between the measurement and computational result is observed. The evolution of each phase was drawn to clarify the influence mechanism of thermal cycle on HAZ hardness. Welding residual stress was predicted with considering mechanical response, which was dominantly determined by last cap welds through analyzing its formation process.

  • This article presents an integrated modeling approach for coupled analysis of heat transfer and microstructure evolution in welding carbon steel. The modeling procedure utilizes commercial [mite element code ABAQUS/Standard as the platform for solving the equation of heat conduction. User subroutines that implement computational thermodynamics and kinetics models are integrated with the FEA code to compute the transient microstructure evolution. In this study, the integrated models are applied to simulate the hot-tap repair welding of carbon steel pipeline. Microstructural components are treated as user output variables. Based on the predicted microstructure and cooling rates, hardness distributions in the welds were also predicted. The predicted microstructure and hardness distribution were found in good agreement with metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. This study demonstrates the applicability of computational models for the development of welding procedure for in-service pipeline repair.

  • HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) which occurs during welding thermal cycle has an important effect on the mechanical properties of the weld metal. So there were many efforts to develop the model which is able to predict the microstructure and mechanical properties in weld HAZ and lots of metallurgical models have reported since early 1940. These models are justifiable based on the reasonable assumption and analytical approach, but they also have limitation by interesting alloying system and assumption in each literature. Therefore, this study summaries the previous models for prediction of properties in weld HAZ. Then several issues to solve for developing the more reliable model were proposed.

  • In the current study, we aim to evaluate both microstructural characteristics and economic benefits of composite structures from supply chain utilizing AI-based method. In this regard, the various aspects of microstructure of composite materials along with the features of supply chain are discussed and quantified. In addition, the final economic aspects of the composite materials and are also presented. Based on available data, a designed artificial neural network is utilized for prediction of both microstructure and economical feature of the composite material. The results indicate that the supply chain could affect the microstructure of final composite materials which in turn make changes in the mechanical properties and durability of composite materials.

  • This paper presents the prediction of microstructure of Inconel 718 disk forgings. The experiments are carried out to examine the recrystallization ratio and grain growth in the forgings. In the experiments, cylindrical billets are forged by two operations with variations of forging temperature and reduction ratio of deformation. Also the finite element program, developed here for the prediction, is used for the analysis, and the results are compared with the experimental ones. It is noted that the comparison appears in sound agreement.
