  • The type, volume fraction, size, shape and arrangement of embedded particles influence the mechanical properties of the particle reinforced metal matrix composites. This presents the investigation of the SiC particle and porosity distributions in various aluminum matrix composites produced by cold- and hot-pressing. The microstructures were characterized by optical microscopy and stereological parameters. SiC and porosity volume fractions, and the anisotropy distribution function were measured to establish the influence of the consolidation method.

  • Optical and mechanical characteristics of $TiO-2, ZrO_2 \;and\; SiO_xN_y$ thin films prepared by ion assisted deposition (IAD) were investigated. IAD films were bombarded by Ar or nitrogen ion beam from a Kaufman ion source while they were grown in as e-beam evaporator. The result shows that the Ae IAD increases the refractive index and packing density of $TiO_2 films close to those of the bulk. For $ZrO_2$ films the Ar IAD increases the average refractive index decreases the negative inhomogeneity of refractive index and reverses to the positive inhomogeneity. The optical properties result from improved packing density and denser outer layer next to air The Ar-ion bombardment also induces the changes in microstructure of $ZrO_2$ films such as the preferred (111) orientation of cubic phase increase in compressive stress and reduction of surface roughness. Inhomogeneous refractive index SiOxNy films were also prepared by nitrogen IAD and variable refractive index of $SiO_xN_y$ film was applied to fabricate a rugate filter.

  • The MOX fuel for LWR is fabricated either by direct mechanical blending of UO$_2$ and PuO$_2$ or by two stage mixing. Hence Pu-rich particles, whose Pu concentrations are higher than pellet average one and whose size distribution depends on a specific fabrication method, are inevitably dispersed in MOX pellet. Due to the inhomogeneous microstructure of MOX fuel, the thermal conductivity of LWR MOX fuel scatters from 80 to 100 % of UO$_2$ fuel. This paper describes a mechanistic thermal conductivity model for MOX fuel by considering this inhomogeneous microstructure and presents an explanation for the wide scattering of measured MOX fuel's thermal conductivity. The developed model has been incorporated into a KAERI's fuel performance code, COSMOS, and then evaluated using the measured in-pile data for MOX fuel. The database used for verification consists of homogeneous MOX fuel at beginning-of-life and inhomogeneous MOX fuel at high turnup. The COSMOS code predicts the thermal behavior of MOX fuel well except for the irradiation test accompanying substantial fission gas release. The over-prediction with substantial fission gas release seems to suggest the need for the introduction of a recovery factor to a term that considers the burnup effect on thermal conductivity.

  • The elemental segregation in the sputter-deposited AgInSbTe recording thin films was studied by means of Auger electron spectroscopy and ESCA for the specimens of as-deposited and as heat-treated conditions. Auger electron spectroscopy and ESCA revealed an extremely thin layer of elemental inhomogeneity, especially for the silver, even in as-deposited condition. The chemical analysis results obtained in this alloy system are discussed in terms of process parameters and target microstructure.

  • The present study is concerned with the effect of PM process variables on the microstructure by using atomized superalloy powders. It is suggested that the inhomogeneity of composition is strongly dependent on the process variables. The contents of segregation elements of plasma rotating electrode process (PREP) powders are larger than those of Ar atomization (AA) powders. As HIP treatment temperature in-increases, the secondary phases on the prior particle boundaries (PPB) have continuous, uniform distribution and high density, but the amount of PPB decreases suddenly at 1150$^{\circ}$C. Segregated phases on the PPB are identified to be MC type carbide. Brittle MC type carbides on the PPB provide fracture initiation sites and preferred fracture path, thereby leading to intergranular type brittle fracture.

  • Microstructural evolution in the thickness direction of an oxygen free copper processed by accumulative rollbonding (ARB) is investigated by electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement. For the ARB, two copper alloy sheets 1 mm thick, 30 mm wide and 300 mm long are first degreased and wire-brushed for sound bonding. The sheets are then stacked and roll-bonded by about 50% reduction rolling without lubrication at an ambient temperature. The bonded sheet is then cut to the two pieces of the same dimensions and the same procedure was repeated on the sheets up to eight cycles. The specimen after 1 cycle showed inhomogeneous microstructure in the thickness direction so that the grains near the surface were finer than those near the center. This inhomogeneity decreased with an increasing number of ARB cycles, and the grain sizes of the specimens after 3 cycles were almost identical. In addition, the aspect ratio of the grains decreased with an increasing number of ARB cycles due to the subdivision of the grains by shear deformation. The fraction of grains with high angle grain boundaries also increased with continuing process of the ARB so that it was higher than that of the low angle grain boundaries in specimens after 3 cycles. A discontinuous dynamic recrystallization occurred partially in specimens after 5 cycles.

  • Multi-axial forging (MAF), a severe plastic deformation technique, is known to be difficult to obtain materials with homogeneous microstructures. Recently, multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) process has been developed to solve this problem. In this study, in order to compare the microstructural and mechanical homogeneities of the MAFed and MADFed samples, oxygen-free copper (OFC) cubes measuring 25 mm in length were deformed through MAF and MADF processes and the average grain size and hardness were measured at the edge, face, and center regions of the samples. In the MAFed samples, ultrafine grains were formed at the center region, but a considerable amount of coarse grains remain at the face region. Therefore, the MAFed samples showed a high inhomogeneity in regards to grain size and hardness. On the contrary, in the case of the MADFed sample, the grain sizes at the edge, face, and center regions were similar and the hardness in all the regions are almost similar. This indicates that the MADFed sample has a homogeneous microstructure and uniform mechanical properties, which can be attributed to the homogeneous distribution of the effective strain throughout the material. The results of this study suggests that the MADF is a suitable process in the fabrication of high-strength copper materials with a homogeneous and ultrafine grain structure.

  • To determine the origin of the inhomogeneous microstructure and texture observed in drawn and annealed high purity copper wires, two kinds of drawing process conditions and their influence was investigated. The regular condition, based on a symmetric die, and a condition designed intentionally to produce an inhomogeneous shear deformation using an asymmetric die were employed. The difference in intensity of <111>-<100> distributed texture between the two wires confirmed that the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition experienced a higher amount of shear deformation. The extensive shear strain in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition gave rise to inhomogeneous primary and secondary recrystallization behavior. After annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, grains with <100> texture, which were larger than the surrounding recrystallized grains, were extensively present on one half circle of the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition, while larger grains with <100> were sparsely observed around the middle region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. Interestingly, the area where the larger grains with <100> texture existed was identical to the area where the high shear strain occurred during drawing in both wires. During annealing at $400^{\circ}C$, grains with <112> texture started to grow abnormally at the center of both wires as a result of secondary recrystallization. After annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ grains with <112> due to secondary recrystallization occupied the entire region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. On the other hand, in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition and then annealed at $900^{\circ}C$, the <100> oriented grains as a result of the normal grain growth of the larger <100> grains which were observed after annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, coexisted with the abnormally grown <112> grains. These results indicate that dynamic recrystallization induced by the shear strain during drawing plays an important role in the inhomogeneity of the microstructure and texture of wires after annealing.
