This paper presents an actual microstructure-based numerical method to investigate the mechanical properties of concrete at mesoscopic level. Digital image processing technique is used to capture the concrete surface image and generate the actual 3-phase microstructure of the concrete, which consists of aggregate, matrix and interfacial transition zones. The microstructure so generated is then transformed into a mesh or grid for numerical analysis. A finite difference code FLAC2D is used for the numerical analysis to simulate the mechanical responses and failure patterns of the concrete. Several cases of concrete with different degrees of material heterogeneity and under different compression loading conditions have been analysed. From the numerical results, the effects of the internal material heterogeneities as well as the external confining stresses are studied. It is shown that the material heterogeneities arising from the presence of different phases and the existence of interfacial transition zones have great influence on the overall mechanical behaviour of concrete and that the numerically simulated behaviour of concrete with or without confining stresses applied agrees quite well with the general observations reported in the literature.
The paper provides the results of microstructure analysis and dielectricproperties of porcelain suspension insulators. The evaluation of characteristics was also made as a function of the manufacturers and fabricated years for the experimental specimens which had been used in real distribution lines. Even though the series A contained higher alumina contents than the series B, the densification of series A was lower than that of series B, resulting from much porosity. The microstructure investigation confirmed that series A had much porosity than series B. The series A contained quartz $(SiO_2),\; mullite\; (Al_6Si_2O_{13}),\; corundum(Al_2O_3),\; and cristobalite\; (SiO_2)$ phases. However, the series B had no cristobalite phase which had very high thermal expansion coefficient. Also, the tan$\delta$of series A was more abruptly increased than that of series B as increasing temperature. The elevated temperature may make much expansion of cristobalite crystal than other crystals, resulting in crack and puncture inside cap during the summer days.
Creep of soils has a significant impact on mechanical properties. The one-dimensional consolidation creep test, thermal analysis test, scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and mercury compression test were performed on Guilin red clay to study the changes in bound water and microstructure during the creep process of Guilin red clay. According to the results of the tests, only free and weakly bound water is discharged during the creep of Guilin red clay. When the consolidation pressure p is in the 12.5-400.0 kPa range, it is primarily the discharge of free water; when the consolidation pressure p is in the 800.0-1600.0 kPa range, the weakly bound water is converted to free water and discharged. After consolidation creep, the microstructure of soil changes from granular overhead contact structure to flat sheet-like stacking structure, with a decrease in the number of large and medium pores, an increase in the number of small and micro pores, and a decrease in the fractal dimension of pores. The creep process of red clay is the discharge of weakly bound water as well as the compression of large pores into small pores and the transition of soil particles from loose to dense.
In this study, three cold-rolled TRIP steels containing different Al content (0.04wt%, 1.0 wt.% and 2.00wt%) were fabricated to understand the complex effects of Al in TRIP steel. The influences of Al on microstructural evolution of cold-rolled TRIP steels have been analyzed by using advanced analysis techniques, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). TEM results revealed that second phases such as bainte and retained austenite decrease with increase of Al content. In addition, 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale distribution of alloying elements at the constituent phases. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in TRIP steels were identified depending on Al contents in TRIP steels.
Large turbine generator(rated 22kV) has failed in the stator winding area during normal operation. The capacitance and tan${\delta}$ were measured by Schering bridge in the zone 1, 2 and zone 3-6 stator windings. The capacitance and tan${\delta}$ in the zone 1, 2 of stator winding were higher than those of zone 3-6 in the stator winding. Experiments on microstructure property were conducted in the zone 1, 2 and zone 3-6 insulations, which were drawn out from stator windings of the large turbine generator. Microstructure analysis was characterized using scanning electron microscope(SEM). SEM results indicated that several isolated delaminations occurred at the interface of mica/epoxy insulations. Both thermal and mechanical aging cause the delamination.
Thermal energy control is a important factor to control properties of large sized product in ingot-forging. Good control of thermal energy helps to increase characteristics and eliminate defects of large cast-forged part, such as large sized forged shell. We have studied about not only large size ring forging process and after heat treatment process by FEM simulation. Changes of temperature and microstructure for forged shell were predicted according to different heat treatment conditions. Therefore, we can choose the proper heat treatment condition by FEA. The sectional properties confirmed by practical experiment and evaluation have presented possibilities of process design by computational analysis.
Variation of HAZ toughness of Ti-containing steel with nitrogen content was investigated and interpreted in terms of its microstructure and the amount of soluble nitrogen present. The amounts of Ti and Al combined in TiN and AlN, respectively, in HAZ at $1400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature were less than those in base plate; 55~88% in TiN and 21~28% in AlN, indicating the dissolution of nitrifies in HAZ. The calculated amounts of soluble nitrogen using the thermodynamic analysis showed a good agreement with the measured values in other experiment. Therefore, the analysis can be used to estimate the amount of soluble nitrogen in HAZ. Simulated HAZ toughness was influenced not only by its microstructure but also by the amount of soluble nitrogen present after the formation of BN during the cooling cycle of welding. It showed maximum value when the nitrogen content is in stoichiometric ratio with titanium content, showing that soluble nitrogen in HAZ is detrimental to its toughness.
High temperature deformation behavior and prediction of final microstructure after forming of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated in this study. Equiaxed and Widmanstatten microstructures of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared as initial microstructures and compression tests were performed to obtain the flow curves at high temperatures (700∼110$0^{\circ}C$) and various strain rates (10$^{-4}$ ∼10$^2$/s). From the results of compression test, strain rate sensitivity (m) and activation energy (Q) were calculated and used to establish constitutive equation. To predict the final microstructure after farming, finite element analysis was performed considering the microstructural parameters such as grain size and volume fraction of second phase.

The relationship between the microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation behavior of pitch-, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-, and Rayon-based carbon fibers (CFs) has been studied in detail. Three types of carbon fiber were exposed to isothermal oxidation in air and the weight change was measured by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) apparatus. After activation energy was gained according to the conversion at reacting temperature, the value of specific surface area and the surface morphology was compared, and the reaction mechanism of oxidation affecting development of pores of carbon fibers was examined. This study will lead to a new insight into the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of carbon fibers.

Dual-beam experiments (Focused ion beam - Orientation mapping microstructure, FIB-OIM) is a widely used experimental tool because this experiments tool available alternates between automated serial sectioning and EBSD with the help of dual beams. We investigated the reconstruction procedure for analysis tool which three-dimensional internal microstructure using Ni superalloy(IN100) and ZrO2. As a results, we observed annealing twin boundary each layer in Ni superalloy(IN100) and fairly isotropic internal microstructure in ZrO2 using marching cubes algorithm. According to these results, this procedure is reconstructed well and we gained ability to arrange the EBSD map and internal microstructure.
