  • Commercial pure iron powder and iron powder of coated 0.45% phosphorus were mixed with graphite powder in dry mixer to control carbon content from 0 wt% to 0.8 wt%. Mixed powder was pressed in the mould under the pressure of 510 MPa. Compacts were sintered at 118$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 min. in cracked ammonia gaseous atmosphere. Some of these sintered specimens were quenched in oil, and tempered in Ar gas. All of these specimens were investigated for microstructure, density and hardness in relation to coated phosphorus and carbon content. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The microstructure of the sintered speciments revealed that the amount of pearlite was increased with increasing C content but decreased by P-addition. (2) The P-addition affected the microstructure of pores in which the pore shape became round and its mean size was decreased by P-addition. (3) After tempering of sintered specimens the structure of pearlite was changed from fine structure to coarse one in P added specimen. (4) Hardness was higher in P added specimens.

  • In rheo forming process, slurry making is very important factor because the microstructure of slurry affects the quality of final products. To control the microstructure of slurry, slurry making by new rheo die casting was studied. In new rheocasting method, processes parameters are degree of overheat in molten metal, cooling condition, high frequency induction heating condition and cup temperature. Microstructures according to these parameters were observed. By image analysis, equivalent diameter and roundness of grain were investigated and discussed. To find out mechanical properties of grain controlled aluminum part by rheo die casting, tensile tests were carried out to the T6 heat treatment.

  • To improve the mechanical properties of most structural materials for industrial applications, the control of microstructure is essential by heat treatment process or plastic deformation process. Since the mechanical behavior of structural materials is significantly influenced by their microstructure, it is inevitably preceded to understand the relationship between microstructure and strengthening mechanisms of materials which can be easily changed by heat treatment. In this regard, the nanoindentation test is useful technique for analyzing the influence of the localized microstructural change on small-scale mechanical behavior of various structural materials. Here, the interesting studies performed on various heat-treated materials are reviewed with focus on micromechanical properties obtained by nanoindentation, which are reported in the available literature.

  • Rheo-forging process of aluminum alloy is suitable for large parts of net shape without defects and excellent mechanical properties in comparison with conventional die casting and forging process. To control the microstructure of the product with high mechanical properties in rheo-forming, solid fraction is required to prevent porosity and liquid segregation. Therefore, in rheo-forging process, die shape, pressure type and solid fraction are very important parameters. The defects such as porosity, liquid segregation and unfitting phenomena occur during rheo-forging process. To prevent these defects, mechanical properties and microstructure analysis of samples versus the change of pressure are carried out and the problem and its solutions are proposed. Also, the mechanical properties versus various pressures were compared with and without heat treatment. The alloys used for rheo-forming are A356 and 2024 aluminum alloy. The rheology material is fabricated by electromagnetic process with controlling current and stirring time.

  • Al-Co/AlN-Co multilayer films with different layer thicknesses were prepared by using a two-facing target type D.C sputtering (TFTS) system. The deposited films were annealed isothermally at different temperatures and their microstructure, magnetic properties and resistivity were investigated. The magnetization of as-deposited films is very small irrespective of layer thickness. It was found that annealing conditions and layer thickness ratio (LTR) of Al-Co to AlN-Co can control the microstructure as well as the physical properties of the prepared films. The resistivity and magnetization increase and the coercivity decreases with decreasing LTR. High resistivity and sufficient magnetization were obtained for the films with LTR = 0.35. Films having such considerable magnetization and resistivity will be a potential candidate to be used for a high density recording material.

  • The increasing demand for automotive industries to reduce the weight of the vehicles has led to a growing usage of Al alloy powder metallurgy (P/M) parts. In order to control the sintered microstructure and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy powder metallurgical (P/M) parts, it is essential to establish a fundamental understanding of the microstructural development during the sintering process. This paper presents a detailed study of the effect of temperature and initial starting materials on the evolution of microstructure during the sintering of Al-Cu-Mg-Si blends for PM.

  • Reducing media noise is a key to realizing high areal recording density. However, perpendicularly oriented Co-Cr films, stong candidates for high density recording media, have received little attention in terms of recording noise. We studied the noise characteristics of Co-Cr based alloy films by varying the compositionally separated structure. Co-Cr films with fine compositionally separated microstructure were observed to have low noise, which recording density dependence were negative or week. Studies on control of the microstructure and magnetic properties in combination with noise analysis are important to realize high density recording media.

  • Metakaolin (MK), which is increasingly being used to produce high performance concrete, is produced by calcining purified kaolinite between 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ in a rotary kiln. The carbonation resistance of metakaolin blended concrete is lower than that of control concrete. Hence, it is critical to consider carbonation durability for rationally using metakaolin in the concrete industry. This study presents microstructure modeling during the carbonation of metakaolin blended concrete. First, based on a blended hydration mo del, the amount of carbonatable substances and porosity are determined. Second, based on the chemical reactions between carbon dioxide and carbonatable substances, the reduction of concrete porosity due to carbonation is calculated. Furthermore, $CO_2$ diffusivity is evaluated considering the concrete composition and exposed environment. The carbonation depth of concrete is analyzed using a diffusion-based model. The proposed microstructure model takes into account the influences of concrete composition, concrete curing, and exposure condition on carbonation. The proposed model is useful as a predetermination tool for the evaluation of the carbonation service life of metakaolin blended concrete.

  • A new approach is described for preparing AlN thin films containing various amounts of Co content by using a two-facing targets type sputtering (TFTS) system. The deposited films were annealed isothermally at different temperatures and their microstructure, magnetic properties and resistivity were investigated. A small saturation magnetization ($4{\pi}Ms=0.52{\sim}0.85kG$) was observed irrespective of Co content in the asdeposited films. It was found that annealing conditions can control physical properties as well as the microstructure of the films. A high saturation magnetization (3.7 kG) and resistivity of $2200{\mu}{\Omega}-cm$ was obtained for AlN films containing 25 at.% Co.

  • In order to increase the efficiency of the sputtering method widely used in thin film fabrication, a dc sputtering apparatus which supplies both high frequency and magnetic field from the outside was fabricated, and cobalt thin film was fabricated using this apparatus. The apparatus can independently control the applied voltage, the target-substrate distance, and the target current, which are important parameters in the sputtering method, so that a stable glow discharge is obtained even at a low gas pressure of $10^{-3}$ Torr. The fabrication conditions using the sputtering method were mainly performed in $Ar+O_2$ mixed gas containing about 0.6 % oxygen gas under various Ar gas pressures of 1 to 30 mTorr. The microstructure of Co thin films deposited using this apparatus was examined by electron diffraction pattern and X-ray techniques. The magnetic properties were investigated by measuring the magnetization curves. The microstructure and magnetic properties of Co thin films depend on the discharge gas pressure. The thin film fabricated at high gas pressure showed a columnar structure containing a large amount of the third phase in the boundary region and the thin film formed at low gas pressure showed little or no columnar structure. The coercivity in the plane was slightly larger than that in the latter case.
