  • Accounting for the additional damages come out from non-proportional loading path effect, material damage according to crystal structure dependence was studied. Microscopic observations of damaged material by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) showed crystal structure dependence. Biaxial in-phase loaded specimens showed the slips of same direction, which pararell each other, but biaxial 90.deg. out-of-phase loaded specimens showed multiply crossed slips. S. H. Doong and D. F. Socie reported that wavy/planar or planar slip material showed the increase in the cyclic hardening level during non-proportional cycling. From these results, the additional hardening and non-proportional loading effects were related with slip mechanism, and the slip mechanism was related with crystal structure. In the present study, a damage mechanism which accounts for the non-proportional loading effect from crystal structure dependence was considered and applied to A17075-T651.

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to investigate the direct and indirect influence areas from incidents on urban interrupted roadways and to develop traffic management strategies for each influence area. METHODS : Based on a literature review, various traffic management strategies for certain incidents were collected. In addition, the relationship between the measure of effectiveness and the characteristics of incidents was explored using an extensive simulation study. RESULTS : From the simulation studies, traffic delays increased as the number of lane closures increased, and the impact of lane closures was reduced to the direction upstream from the incident site. However, the magnitude of the delay change depended on the degree of saturation. Using these characteristics, the direct and indirect influence areas resulting from incidents were defined, and traffic management strategies were established for each direct and indirect influence area and for each level of incident. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study will contribute to the improvement of national traffic safety by preventing secondary incidents and by effective adaptation to incident events.

  • Fly ash is used in concrete to improve the fresh and hardened properties of concrete, including workability, initial hydration temperature, ultimate strength and durability. A primary limitation on the use of large quantities of fly ash in blended cement concrete is its slow rate of strength gain. Prior studies investigated the effects of grinding fly ash and fly ash fineness on the performance of concrete containing fly ash. This study aims to discover the sources of those effects, to verify the compressive strength behavior of concrete made with raw and processed Class C fly ash, and to investigate the properties of fly ash particles at the microscopic level. Concrete cylinder test results indicate that grinding fly ash can significantly benefit the early age strength as well as the ultimate strength of concrete with ground fly ash. Therefore, it is demonstrated that grinding fly ash increases its reactivity. Scanning Electron Microscopy was then used to investigate the physical effects of the grinding process on the fly ash particles in order to identify the mechanism by which grinding leads to improved concrete properties.

  • A full retention of the tetragonal phase with coarse grains $(50\~60\;{\mu}m)$ was possible with the specimen $ZrO_2-1.9\;mol\%\;Y_2O_3$. In these coarse grains, $\{101\}_t$ annealing twins were frequently observed, although they do not exist in the usual fine grained specimens. The morphology and growth rate of the isothermally formed individual products are studied at an optical microscopic level. The habit planes of both products are also identified by performing two-surface trace analysis on the grains whose orientations are determined by the Electron Back Scattering Pattern (EBSP) method. The morphologies of isothermal martensite were well-defined thin plates and lenticular types. The growth rate in their longitudinal directions was quite slow and temperature-dependent. A two-surface trace analysis, incorporated with the EBSP method, identified the habit planes near $\{013\}_c$, in agreement with previous reports obtained from TEM works.

  • Present experiment designed for the review of theoretical basis for the inspection system of infected insects by Nosema bombycis. A microporidian N. bombycis, known as the high virulence, produced at the average of 7$\times$108 spores per female moth of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, enabled transovarial tranmission. Detectability of N. bombycis spores in the mass inspection was varied by dillution level, the higher limit of dillution with healthy moths was 1:140 for 100% detection, 1:160 for 99.5%, 1:200 for 99.0%. For an efficient inspection under the microscopic observation (600$\times$), the lower limit of spore concentration was determined as 1, 000, 000 spores/ml, 60-80 moths could be applicable for a maximum sample unit of a lot. Following the present inspection unit conditioned 35 to 40 moths for a lot. N. bombycis spores were easily detectable from the preparation of crude homogenate with 2% KOH, even the step of contrifuge was omitted. The results suggested a new basis of rational mass inspection system of silkworm female moths to save the facilities, labor, and time.

  • Microscopy has enabled the development of many advanced technologies, and higher level microscopic techniques are required according to the increase of research in nano-technology and bio-technology fields. Therefore, in many applications, we need to measure the dimension of micro-scale parts accurately, not just to observe their shapes. To establish the meter-traceability in microscopy, gratings have been widely used as a magnification standard. KRISS provides the certification service of magnification standards using an optical diffractometer and a metrological AFM (MAFM). They are based on different measurement principles, and so can give complementary information for each other. In this paper, we describe the configuration of each system and measurement procedures to certificate grating pitch values of magnification standards. Several measurement results are presented, and the discussion about them are also given. Using the optical diffractometer, we can calibrate a grating specimen with uncertainty of less than 50 pm. The MAFM can measure a grating specimen of down to 100 nm pitch value, and the calibrated values usually have uncertainty less than 500 pm.

  • Hydrocepbalus may be an acquired or a congenital condition. We have studied the macroscopic and microscopic changes in the hydrocephalus of an inbred Sprague-Dawley rat at postnatal week 8. The animal suspected with the hydrocephalus showed clinical syndromes such as depression, severe ataxia, eye abnormalities, dome-shaped head, and persistent fontanelle. With the postmortem examination, the suspected animal was clearly revealed as a severe internal hydrocephalus. In this animal, severe ventriculomegaly was limited to the third and lateral ventricles, and cortical thining was most apparent in the parieto-occipital region. With the routine histological examination, brain tissue showed aqueductal obstruction, thinning of the cerebral cortex, severe ependymal damage, subependymal edema, damage of choroid plexus of fourth ventricle, enlarged cortical vessels, and expanded ventricles. Aqueductal obstruction was observed with the appearance of simple stenosis at the level of rostral colliculus. Subsequently, the other structures of brain such as septal nucleus, caudate nucleus, and hippocampus etc. were abnormally reconstructed by hydrocephalus. This study suggests that the hydrocephalus can be taken place by primary aqueductal obstruction and this type of hydrocephalus is classified as uncommunicating type. Though the mechanism of aqueductal obstruction is not clear, the morphological studies of this case may be helpful for the further study of hydrocephalus.

  • In this study, based on the effect of the interaction of fracture mechanics by graphite and fatigue limit phenomena of the microscopic observation various matrix structure, spheroidal ratio, size of graphite and distribution etc. parameters containd with Ductile Cast Iron. Therefore, in this study, different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure and spheroidal ratio of graphite of 70%, 80% and 90%, GCD40, GCD45-1 and GCD45-2 series and three different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure, GCD 45-3, GCD 50, GCD 60 series, all of which contain more than 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite, were used to obtain the correlation between mean size of spheroidal graphite and fatigue strength. (1) 73% pearlite structure had the highest fatigue limitation while 36% pearlite structure had the lowest fatigue limitation among ferrite-pearlite matrix. the increase in spheroidal ratio with increasing fatigue limitation, 90% had the highest, 14.3% increasing more then 10%, distribution range of fatigue life was small in same stress level. (2) (equation omitted) of graphite can be used to predict fatigue limit of Ductile Cast Iron. The Statistical distribution of extreme values of (equation omitted) may be used as a guideline for the control of inclusion size in the steelmaking processes.

  • Lithium storage electrodes for rechargeable batteries require mixed electronic-ionic conduction at the particle scale in order to deliver desired energy density and power density characteristics at the device level. Recently, lithium transition metal phosphates of olivine and Nasicon structure type have become of great interest as storage cathodes for rechargeable lithium batteries due to their high energy density, low raw materials cost, environmental friendliness, and safety. However, the transport properties of this family of compounds, and especially the electronic conductivity, have not generally been adequate for practical applications. Recent work in the model olivine LiFePO$_4$, showed that control of cation stoichiometry and aliovalent doping results in electronic conductivity exceeding 10$^{-2}$ S/cm, in contrast to ~10$^{-9}$ S/cm for high purity undoped LiFePO$_4$. The increase in conductivity combined with particle size refinement upon doping allows current rates of >6 A/g to be utilized while retaining a majority of the ion storage capacity. These properties are of much practical interest for high power applications such as hybrid electric vehicles. The defect mechanism controlling electronic conductivity, and understanding of the microscopic mechanism of lithiation and delithiation obtained from combined electrochemical and microanalytical techniques, will be discussed

  • The author examined for observing the structures of pyrenoid and cell wall of three strains of Chlorella ellipsoidea and relation of pyrenoid to starch grain formation at the ultrastructure level. 1. The development of pyrenoid of Chlorella species from the time of its initiation and its subdetail sequent activities are described in some pictures. 2. Close correlation between the findings of light microscopy and electron microscopy is proved. 3. The pyrenoid is a dynamic organellae which continues to change its appearance thoughout the development of the Chlorella cell. 4. The starch grains are continously formed by deposition of carbohydrate within the chloroplast with the aid of pyrenoid factors. 5. Some parental starch grains are passed on the daughter cell during cell division. 6. The Da stage cells contain only chlaroplast without pyrenoid matrix. In Da stage a pyrenoid is surrounded by starch and starch grains appear in chloroplast lamellae. In $L_1L_2$ stages, large starch grains of lens form accumulate in cell. In $L_3$ stage pyrenoid disappears for a time and starch grains are scattered. In cell division stage starch grains are divided into four groups. In $L_4$ stage, pyrenoid substance appears temporarily and disappears soon. At this stage the cell is constituted of Dn cell containing chloroplast only. 7. The cellular boundary of JE strain except Y 815 and Y 511 strain contains 250.angs. intermediate layer of unknown chemical composition between the fibrillar cellulose wall and the out capsule layer.
