  • This study aims to provide microstructural characterization for the matrix graphite which molten salt reactors (MSRs) use, and improve resistance to molten salt infiltration of the matrix graphite for fuel elements. Mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) densified matrix graphite A3-3 (MDG) was prepared by a quasi-isostatic pressure process. After densification by MCMBs with average particle sizes of 2, 10, and 16 ㎛, the pore diameter of A3-3 decreased from 924 nm to 484 nm, 532 nm, and 778 nm, respectively. Through scanning electron microscopy, the cross-section energy spectrum and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, resistance levels of the matrix graphite to molten salt infiltration were analyzed. The results demonstrate that adding a certain proportion of MCMB powders can improve the anti-infiltration ability of A3-3. Meanwhile, the closer the particle size of MCMB is to the pore diameter of A3-3, the smaller the average pore diameter of MDG and the greater the densification. As a matrix graphite of fuel elements in MSR was involved, the thermal and mechanical properties of matrix graphite MDG were also studied. When densified by the MCMB matrix graphite, MDGs can meet the molten salt anti-infiltration requirements for MSR operation.

  • To manufacture a carbon/carbon composite the coal tar pitch was used as the matrix precursor and the PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fiber was used as the reinforcing material to weave 3-directional preform. For pressure carbonization HIP equipment was used to produce a maximum temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$ and a maximum pressure of 100 MPa. The carbonization was induced by altering the dwell temperature between $250^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$, which is an ideal temperature for the moderate growth of the mesophase nucleus that forms within the molten pitch during the pressure carbonization process. The application of high pressure during the carbonization process inhibits the mesophase growth and leads to the formation of spherical carbon particles that are approximately 30 nm in size. Most particles were spherical, but some particles were irregularly shaped. The spread of the carbon particles was larger on the surface of the carbon fiber than in the interior of the matrix pocket.

  • A simple pressing process using a SiC powder, $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ sintering additive, and polymer microbeads for fabricating cellular SiC ceramics is demonstrated. The strategy for making the cellular ceramics involves: (i) forming certain shapes using a mixture of a SiC powder, $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ sintering additive, and polymer microbeads by pressing; (ii) heat-treatment of the formed body to burn-out the microbeads; and (iii) sintering the body. By controlling the microsphere content and sintering temperature, it was possible to adjust the porosity in a range of 16% to 69%. The flexural and compressive strengths of cellular SiC ceramics with $\sim$40% porosity were $\sim$60 MPa and $\sim$160 MPa, respectively.

  • Poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-grafted polyethylene microbeads (POPM) presenting epoxy groups were prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate on the polyethylene microbead. The obtained POPM was characterized by IR spectroscopic, X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermal analyses. Furthermore, the abundance of epoxy groups on the POPM was determined by titration and elemental analysis after amination. The epoxy group content was calculated to be in the range 0.29-0.34 mmol/g when using the titration method, but in the range 0.53-0.59 mmol./g when using elemental analysis (EA) after amination. The lipase was immobilized to the epoxy groups of the POPM under various experimental conditions, including changes to the pH and the epoxy group content. The activity of the lipase-immobilized POPM was in the range from 160 to 500 unit/mg-min. The activity of the lipase-immobilized POPM increased upon increasing the epoxy group content. The lipase-immobilized POPM was characterized additionally by SEM, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and EA.

  • This paper reports a novel magnetic force-based microfluidic immunoassay using microbeads and magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic force-based immunoassay was devised first and successfully applied to detect the rabbit IgG as the model analyte of microfluidic sandwich immunoassay. The microchannels were fabricated by poly(dimethysiloxane) (PDMS) molding processes and bonded on a slide glass by plasma treatment. At the part of the inlet, sample solution was hydrodynamically focused. The focused microbeads of sample solution were flowed through the 150 ${\mu}m$ width channel of outlet. However, when the microbeads are conjugated with the superparamagnetic nanoparticles under the applied magnetic fields, they will switch their flow path and flow through the 95 ${\mu}m$ width channel of outlet. The movements of microbeads conjugated with magnetic nanoparticles were demonstrated by magnetic field $gradients.^{1)}$ High magnetic field gradients using micro electromagnets could be applied to this detection method for high sensitivity and lower detection limit. In addition, the multiplexed $immunoassay^{2)}$ using an encoded microbead which is immobilized with a certain antibody could be possible using this detection principle.

  • A micromachined fluidic structure for the introduction of liquid samples into a chip-based sensor array composed of individually addressable polymeric microbeads has been developed. The structure consists of a separately attached cover glass, a single silicon chip having micromachined channels and microbead storage cavities, and a glass carver. In our sensor array, transduction occurs via colorimetric and fluorescence changes to receptors and indicator molecules that are covalently attached to termination sites on the polymeric microbeads. Data streams are acquired for each of the individual microbeads using a CCD. One of the key parts of the structure is a passive fluid introduction system driven only by capillary force. The velocity of penetration of a horizontal capillary for the device having a rectangular cross section has been derived, and it is quite similar to the Washburn Equation calculated for a pipe with a circular cross section having uniform radius. The test results show that this system is useful in a ${\mu}$-TAS and biomedical applications.

  • Immunoassay is one of the important analytical methods for clinical diagnoses and biochemical studies, but needs a long time, troublesome procedures and expensive reagents. In this study, therefore, we propose the micro filter chip with microbeads for immunoassay, which has pillar structures. The advantage of the proposed micro filter chip is to use simple fabrication process and cheap materials. The mold was made by the photolithography technique with Si wafer and negative photoresist SU-8. The replica was made of PDMS, bonded on the pyrex glass. The micro filter chip consists of inlet channel, filter chamber and outlet channel. HBV (Hepatitius B virus) monoclonal antibody (Ag1) labeled with biotin were immobilized onto streptavidin coated beads of 30∼50 $\mu$m size. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled HBV monoclonal antibody (Ag8) was used to detect HBsAg (Hebatitis B virus surface Antigen), and fluorescence intensity was monitored by epi-fluorescence microscope. In this study, the immune response of less than 30 min was obtained with with the use of 100 $m\ell$ of sample.

  • Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) removal efficiencies of a sand filter (SF), polystyrene microbead filter (PF), and Kaldnes bead filter (KF) media were evaluated under ammonia loading rates of 5, 25, and 50 g $m^{-3}day^{-1}$. The volume of each filter media tested was 7 L, and the water flow rate for all filter media was 24 L/min. The specific surface areas of the SF, PF, and KF were 7,836, 3,287, and 500 $m^2/m^3$, respectively. Sand was fluidized and the other two media were trickle filtered. The volumetric TAN removal rate increased with increasing ammonia loading rate for all filter media. Mean volumetric TAN removal rates under the ammonia loading rates of 5, 25, and 50 g $m^{-3}day^{-1}$ in SF (39.3, 168.6, and 322.7 g $m^{-3}day^{-1}$, respectively) were higher than those in PF (35.0, 157.4, and 310.5 g $m^{-3}day^{-1}$, respectively) and KF (32.1, 142.5, and 288.1 g $m^{-3}day^{-1}$, respectively). These results were related to differences in the specific surface areas of the filter media. PF was the most economic media for efficiently removing TAN.

  • A Multilayered microelectrode design is presented for large area travelling wave dielectrophoresis (TwDEP) separators. Most of typical TwDEP chip has been arrayed with 1000 electrodes in $20{\times}20\;mm^2$. However, there is a limitation of the device area that is critical in throughput, because when the area of TwDEP becomes larger, the resistance of microelectrodes for bus bar is also increased. In this paper, we successfully developed a novel TwDEP chip with extremely large area ($31{\times}25\;mm^2$) by a unique multilayered bus bar design. According to the resistance simulation of our microelectrodes, it is possible to realize a TwDEP chip with an infinite longitudinal length. We demonstrated the feasibility of our suggestion with latex microbeads and showed the potential of extremely high throughput separation with TwDEP technique.
