Degradation problem due to long term service in machine or structure is now one of important problems in whole industrial field. In this study, pressure vessel steel, Cr-Mo steel, which was used more than 60,000 hours, was surface-modified by laser beam radiation for the improvement of fatigue strength. To find out optimum radiation condition, hardness, residual stress measurement and fatigue tests were carried out with the specimen of different radiation conditions. Experimental results show that micro-hardness values on the surface of the radiated specimens were approximately 2.2 times higher than those of un-radiated ones. In the depth direction of the specimen, hardness on the surface showed maximum value and was decreased at the inside the specimen. Different hardness values are due to the energy density Q which was absorbed by the specimen. Fatigue tests show that fatigue life was improved by the compressive residual stress after laser beam radiation. However, some specimens with differednt conditions show the shorter fatigue life. It means that laser beam radiation with optimum parameter can improve thae fatigue strength.

The effect of organic additives, polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the trivalent chromium electroplating was analysed in the view point of current efficiency, solution stability and metallurgical structure. It was measured that PEG-containing trivalent chromium solution had about 10% higher current efficiency than pure solution and controlled the micro-crack density of electrodeposits. PEG exhibited profound effect on the solution stability by reducing the consumption rate of formic acid which acts as a complexant to lower the activation energy required for electrochemical reduction of trivalent chromium ions. It was also revealed that the formation of chromium carbide layer was facilitated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which meant easier electrochemical codeposition of chromium and carbon, not single chromium deposition. Trivalent chromium layer formed from PEG-containing solution was amorphous with local nano-crystalline particles, which were prominently developed on the entire surface after non-oxidative heat treatment.

This study focused on laser assisted machining (LAM) of silicon nitride ceramic that efficiently removes the material through machining of the softened zone by local heating. The effects of laser-assisted machining parameters were studied for cost reduction, and active application in processing of silicon nitride ceramics in this study. Laser assisted machining of silicon nitride allows effective cutting using CBN tool by local heating of the cutting part to the softening temperature of YSiAlON using by the laser beam. When silicon nitride is sufficiently preheated, the surface is oxidized and decomposed and then forms bloating, micro crack and silicate layer, thereby making the cutting process more advantageous. HIPSN and SSN specimens were used to study the machining characteristics. Higher laser power makes severer oxidation and decomposition of both materials. Therefore, HIPSN and SSN specimens were machined more effectively at higher power.
The mechanical behaviors and chloride resistance performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) with hybrid polyethylene (PE) and steel fiber (in total 2% by volume) were investigated. Based on micro-mechanics and fracture mechanics, the reason why the tensile strain capacity of FRCC changed obviously was obtained. Besides, the effects of the total surface area of fiber in FRCC on compressive strength and chloride content were clarified. It is found that the improvement of the tensile strain capacity of FRCC with hybrid fiber is attributed to the growth of strain-hardening performance index (the ratio of complementary energy to crack tip toughness). As the total surface area of fiber related with the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fiber and matrix increases, compressive strength decreases obviously. Since the total surface area of fiber is small, the chloride resistance performance of FRCC with hybrid PE and steel fiber is better than that of FRCC containing only PE fiber.
Irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) is one of the main degradation mechanisms of austenitic stainless steels, which are used as reactor internal materials. Slow strain rate testing (SSRT) has been widely applied to evaluate the IASCC initiation characteristics of proton-irradiated tensile specimens. Tensile specimens require low surface roughness for micro-crack observation, and electropolishing is the most important specimen pre-treatment process used for this. In this study, optimal electropolishing conditions were examined through analyzing results of polarization experiments and surface roughness measurements after electropolishing. Corrosion cell and electropolishing equipment were fabricated for polarization tests and electropolishing experiments using SSRT specimens. The experimental parameters were electropolishing time, current density, electrolyte temperature, and stirring speed. The optimal electropolishing conditions for SSRT tensile specimens made of type 316 stainless steel were evaluated as a polishing time of 180 seconds, a current density of 0.15 A/cm2, an electrolyte temperature of 60 ℃, and a stirring speed of 200 RPM.

Fractures of galvannealed coating layer during actual press forming in automotive applications were observed by scanning electron microscopy in order to understand fracture mechanism. Fracture behaviors of galvannealed coating layer in extra deep drawing quality steels and high strength steels have been studied by performing the tests describing the representative plastic deformation in sheet metal forming such as uni-axial tensile test, compression test, bi-axial test and plane strain test. Growth and direction of cracks were deeply related to the plastic deformation modes and history. The material properties of galvannealed coating layer were investigated by nano-indentation test equipped with Berkovich diamond indentor for the specimens. Hardness and elastic modulus of the coating layer were higher than bared steels and that was the reason for crack of coating layer. Flat friction test and drawbead friction test were performed to observe the effect of the surface morphology on the frictional characteristics. The micro-plasto hydrodynamic lubrication were appeared and played an important role in reducing the coefficient of friction.

To overcome a climate change, manufacturing complex-shaped electric mobility parts becomes one of the important issues for enhancing a performance of motor with reducing their weight. Therefore, development of laser-based additive manufacturing shed on light due to their flexible manufacturing capacity that can be suitable to solve the poor formability of Fe-Si alloys for electric mobility parts. Although there are several studies existed to optimize the performance of additively manufactured Fe-Si alloys, the post-annealing effect was not well investigated yet though this is important to control the texture and mechanical properties of additively manufactured parts. In the present work, annealing effect on the mechanical property and microstructure of additively manufactured Fe-4.5Si alloy was investigated. Because of the ordered phase initiation after annealing, the hardness of additively manufactured Fe-4.5Si alloy increased up to 1173 K while a hardness drop occurs at the 1273 K condition due to the micro-crack initiation. The response surface methodology result represents the 1173 K-5 h sample is an optimal condition to maximize the mechanical property of additively manufactured alloy without micro-cracks.

Yb and Zn co-doped $LiNbO_3$ single crystal rods which had a diameter of 2 mm and a length of $15{\sim}25 mm$ were grown by micro-pulling down (${\mu}-PD$) method. The single crystals were successfully grown and had a uniform diameter and a smooth surface without crack. We realized of $LiNbO_3$ single crystals were hexagonal structure to compare with peaks of $LiNbO_3$ powder by Raman spectra. The threshold level of Zn concentration which is effective for optical damage were observed as about 1 mol% with IR transmission spectra.

Nitride films such as TiN, CrN etc. deposited on glass by PVD processes have been developed for many industrial applications. These nitride films deposited on glass were widely used for not only decorative and optical coatings but also wear and corrosion resistance coatings employed as dies and molds made of glass for the example of lens forming molds. However, the major problem of nitride coatings on glass by PVD process is non-uniform film owing to pin-hole and micro crack. It is estimated that nonuniform coating is influenced by a different surface energy between metal nitrides and glass due to binding states. In this work, therefore, for the evaluation of nucleation and growth mechanism of nitride films on glass TiN and CrN film were synthesized on glass with various nitrogen partial pressure by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Prior to deposition, for the examination of relationship between surface energy and film microstructure plasma pre-treatment process was carried out with various argon to hydrogen flow rate and substrate bias voltage, duty cycle and frequency by using pulsed DC power supply. Surface energy owing to the different plasma pre-treatment was calculated by the measurement of wetting angle and surface conditions of glass were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). The microstructure change of nitride films on glass with increase of film thickness were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).
The strain rate effects on fracture toughness and fracture resistance characteristics of A533B-1 nuclear pressure vessel steels were examined in the quasi-dynamic test conditions through the microscopic investigation of the intense strain region around crack tip and the microroughness of fracture surface. J-value calculated from the recrystallization etch technique was the same as calculated from the modified-J when the crack extension is less than 1.5mm in a 1/2T-CT specimen. Local fracture strain was calculated from the fracture surface micro-roughness. The local strains were calculated to be the values of 1.8 and 2.0 and were much higher than the macroscopically measured values. It was nearly independent on strain rate and was regarded as a material constant in ductile dimpled rupture. The fracture toughness increased with increase in strain rate while the tearing modulus showed little variation.
