  • New alternative refrigerants have been developed due to the ozone layer depletion and global warming. For this reason, carbon dioxide is believed to be a promising refrigerant for use in air conditioners and heat pumps. Evaporative heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop of $CO_2$ with outer diameter of 5 mm in inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes have been investigated by the experiments with respect to several test conditions such as mass fluxes, heat fluxes, evaporation temperatures in this study. The inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes with length of 1.44 m were installed to measure the evaporative heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ and heat was supplied to the refrigerant by direct heating method where the test tube was uniformly heated by electricity. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes from 212 to $656\;kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes from 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and evaporation temperatures from -10 to $20^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are slightly increased with increasing mass flux, and the heat transfer characteristics in the inclined ($45^{\circ}$) tubes are enhanced about $5{\sim}10%$ compared with those in horizontal or vertical tubes.

  • Characteristics of evaporation heat transfer in 6.2 and 5.1mm OD micro-fin tubes were investigated in the present study. The data were taken at evaporation temperatures of -5$^{\circ}C$ and 5$^{\circ}C$ and heat fluxes 5kW/$m^2$ to 10kW/$m^2$. Mass flux was consequently maintained at 210, 300 and 410kg/$m^2$s for the 6.2mm OD tube and 465, 500 and 600kg/$m^2$s for the 5.1mm OD tube. The effects of heat flux, mass flux, and outer diameter on the heat transfer coefficient are explored in the present study. The data showed that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient for the 6.2mm OD tube was averagly higher by 16% than that for a 7.0mm OD tube, while the 5.1mm OD tube had approximately 30% higher value than the 6.2mm OD tube.

  • Evaporation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were measured for smooth and micro-fin tubes with R-22 and R-410A. Heat transfer measurements were performed for 3.0m long horizontal tubes with nominal outside diameters of 9.52 and 7.0mm over an evaporating temperature range of -15 to 5$\^{C}$, a mass flux range of 68 to 211kg/㎡s, and a heat flux range of 5 to 15kW/㎡. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient increased with mass flux. Evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A increased as the evaporating temperature dropped at a lower heat flux. Generally, R-420A showed the higher heat transfer coefficients than R-22 in the range of low mass flux, high heat flux and high evaporating temperature. Pressure drop increased with a decrease of evaporating temperature and a rise of mass flux. Pressure drop of R-22 was higher than that of R-410A at the same mass flux.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-410A, and the results are compared with those of R-22. The flat tubes have two internal geometries; one with smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the following range of variables; vapor Quality (0.1∼0.9), mass flux (200∼600 kg/$m^2$s) and heat flux (5∼15 kW/$m^2$). Results show that the effect of surface tension drainage on the fin surface is more pronounced for R-22 than R-410A. The smaller Weber number of R-22 may be responsible. For the smooth tube, the heat transfer coefficient of R-410A is slightly larger than that of R-22. For the micro-fin tube, however, the trend is reversed. Possible reason is provided considering physical properties of the refrigerants. For the smooth tube, Webb's correlation predicts the data reasonably well. For the micro-fin tube, the Yang and Webb model was modified to correlate the present data. The modified model adequately predicts the data.

  • Computer simulation model for predicting more accurately the heat transfer performance of the evaporator and condenser which have significantly affected on the performance of air-conditioner has been suggested. In this model oil and micro-fin tube used in a actual unit are considered to simulate the more realistic case. The effects of oil and micro-fin tube on the performance of an air-conditioner have been investigated. It is found that the present model requires higher pressure than the existing model due to the characteristics of the tube considered. However, it turns out that the present model is very close to an actual cycle. As the amount of oil inside the tube increases, condensation heat transfer coefficient shows a linear decrease irrespective of a kind of oil, while evaporation heat transfer coefficient increases slightly in the oil with low viscosity and decreases exponentially in the oil with high viscosity. Pressure drop in both evaporator and condenser increases linearly irrespective of a kind of oil. It is also found that the effect of the variation of oil concentration on the magnitude of two-phase region is negligible.

  • This paper deals with the heat exchange performance prediction of a counter flow type double-tube condenser for natural refrigerant mixtures composed of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane in a smooth tube and a micro-fin tube. The local characteristics of heat transfer, mass transfer and pressure drop are calculated using a prediction method developed by the authors. The total pressure drop and the overall heat transfer coefficient are also evaluated on various heat exchange conditions. The calculated results of the natural refrigerant mixtures are compared with HCFC22. In conclusion, natural refrigerant mixtures composed of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane are appropriate candidates for alternative refrigerant from the viewpoint of heat transfer characteristics.

  • This paper presents the fabrication techniques of microcooling fins for microelectronics applications. The various types of cooling fins have been fabricated on the surface of a silicon wafer (4inch-N type) by using wet etching technique. The designed micro fins and micro channels are considered as an effective method for cooling microelectronics devices generating high heat flux. Further we extensively investigate the design processes fabricating micro fins and channels which can cool the heat generated from high density electronics devices.

  • A micro channel heat sink has been studied and optimized for mixed pressure driven and electroosmotic flows through three-dimensional numerical analysis. The effects of ionic concentration represented by zeta potential and Debye thickness are studied with the various steps of externally applied electric potential. Optimization of the micro channel heat sink has been performed considering two design variables related to the micro channel width, depth and fin width. The surrogate-based optimization is performed using a search algorithm taking overall thermal resistance as objective function. The thermal resistance is found to be more sensitive to channel width-to-depth ratio than fin width-to-depth of channel ratio.

  • This paper has presented the dependence of the threshold voltage on back gate bias and drain voltage for FinFET. The FinFET has three gates such as the front gate, side and back gate. Threshold voltage is defined as the front gate bias when drain current is 1 micro ampere as the onset of the turn-on condition. In this paper threshold voltage is investigated into the analytical potential model derived from three dimensional Poisson's equation with the variation of the back gate bias and drain voltage. The threshold voltage of a transistor is one of the key parameters in the design of CMOS circuits. The threshold voltage, which described the degree of short channel effects, has been extensively investigated. As known from the down scaling rules, the threshold voltage has been presented in the case that drain voltage is the 1.0V above, which is set as the maximum supply voltage, and the drain induced barrier lowing(DIBL), drain bias dependent threshold voltage, is obtained using this model.
