An electrospun Poly (lactice-co-glycolide acid) (PLGA) and Gelatin nanofiber tube was fabricated for potential intestinal stent application. Mechanical properties of tube were evaluated by tensile strength and burst strength tests. Physical and chemical properties were evaluated by contact angle measurement, swelling rates and porosity measurements. Biodegradability was investigated by immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF). Biocompatibility was investigated in vitro by cytotoxicity and proliferation studies by MTT assay, confocal microscopy and western blot using IEC-18 (Rat intestinal epithelial cell). After intestinal stent was implanted into rat bowel for periods from 7 to 10days, it was then analyzed using micro-computed tomography (Micro CT) and X-ray techniques. Futhermore, histological analysis was performed by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stain.
SnAgCu lead-free solder alloy is considered as the best alternative to eutectic tin-lead solder. However, the detailed material properties of SnAgCu solder are not available in public. Hence, this paper presents an estimation of mechanical properties of SnAgCu lead-free solder. In particular, the weight percent of Ag was varied as 1.0wt%, 2.5wt%, 3.0wt%, and 4.5wt% in order to estimate the effect of Ag in the Sn-xAg-0.5Cu ternary alloy system. For this purpose, four types of SnAgCu bars were first molded by casting and then standard specimens were cut out of molded bars. Micro-Vickers hardness, tensile tests were finally performed to estimate the variations in mechanical properties according to the weight percent of Ag. Test results reveal that the higher the weight percent of Ag is, the higher the hardness, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength become. More material properties will be further investigated in the future work.
Recently, the structural failures due to fatigue occur frequently with the increase of size of ships and offshore structures. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the residual strength are very important. Currently, the smart materials technology has demonstrated a variety of possibilities for a diagnosis of structural strength and structural health condition for large structures. The benefits and feature of the MFC sensor are more flexible, durable and reliable than conventional smart material. In this study, Micro Fiber Composite (MFC) sensor for the measurement of stress intensity factor (SIF) of two dimensional cracks induced in a structure is developed. Two MFC sensors are placed in the vicinity of the crack tip close to each other with the crack tip in between them. The SIFs of Mode I($K_I$) as well as of Mode II($K_{II}$) based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. In this study, the SIF values measured by MFC sensors are compared with the theoretical results and measured value.
Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed to investigate the effects of 2-phase matrix structure on fatigue limit with prepared specimens in high strength ductile irons. Two types of the specimens with different microstructures have been used. Series A has sorbite and series B has bainite. Fatigue limits of both specimens are improved comparing with as cast specimen. The fatigue limit is higher in series B than in series A. The reason why the fatigue limit of series A shows inferiority to that of series B is due to the transition of micro fatigue cracks to mesocrack occurs very rapidly, so increased stress intensity factor drives the fatigue crack growth. The higher fatigue limit of series B which has bainite is caused by the ${\gamma}$ layer contained in microstructure impede the rapid growth of micro fatigue crack to mesocrack and ${\alpha}$ layer around graphite has the higher capacity for the absorption of plastic deformation energy than sorbite.
In this study, the fracture strength for fracture mechanism porous calcium phosphate made from sintered with ${\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate obtained by wet precipitation procedure is analyzed using finite element method and experiment measurement. First, three $3{\times}3{\times}3mm^3$ and $5{\times}5{\times}5mm^3$ specimens are prepared and tomographic images of one $5{\times}5{\times}5mm^3$ specimen are obtained by micro focus X-ray CT. The compression tests using the specimens are carried out to measure the elastic modulus and fracture strength to analyze the fracture mechanism of porous calcium phosphate specimen. The tomographic images are reconstructed by 3D reconstruction program. The finite elements are directly built up in the reconstructed specimen. The numerical simulation for the compression tests is performed using the element. The mechanism of calcium phosphate of simulation are obtained by the compression tests using there cylindric specimen of height 19.5 mm and diameter 10 mm. From the results, the applicability of porous calcium phosphate is evaluated to care fracture and vacant bone of a patient as the reinforcement material.
An electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) system for measuring tensile properties under micro-tensile testing has been developed. The system consists of an optical system and an image processing system. In the optical system, optical components for measurement of in-plane deformation are arranged on the path of He-Ne laser. In the image processing system, the window-based program for acquiring speckle pattern interferometric image was developed and deformation in a small specimen is continuously evaluated during the test. Using this system, tensile strain of copper foil was measured during tensile testing. Tensile specimen had the thickness and width of 22 and 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. Tensile properties, including the elastic modulus, yielding strength and tensile strength, of the copper were evaluated and also plastic exponent and coefficient in the Ramberg-Osgood relationship were evaluated from the stress-strain curve.
This study investigated variations of micro-structures and mechanical properties of Ti / STS321L joint with various bonding temperature and time using brazing method. According to increasing bonding temperature and time, it was observed that the thickness of their reaction layer increased due So increasing diffusion rate and time. From the EPMA results, Ti diffused to the STS321L substrate according to increasing bending time to 30min. Hardness of bonded interface increased with increasing bonding temperature and time due to increasing their oxides and intermetallic compounds. XRD data indicated that Ag, Ag-Ti intermetallic compounds, TiAg and Ti₃Ag and titanium oxide, TiO₂were formed in interface. In tensile test, it was found that the tensile strength had a maximum value at the bonding temperature of 900℃ and time of 5min, and tensile strength decreased over bonding time of 5min. The critical thickness of intermetallic compounds was observed to about 30㎛, because of brittleness from their excessive intermetallic compounds and titanium oxide, and weakness from void.

The current solution to the problem of using cementitious material for sealing purposes in a final radioactive waste repository is to develop a low-pH cement grout. In this study, the material properties of a low-pH cement grout based on a recipe used at ONKALO are investigated by considering such factors as pH variation, compressive strength, dynamic modulus, and hydraulic conductivity by using silica fume and micro-cement. From the pH measurements of the hardened cement grout, the required pH (< pH 11) is obtained after 130 days of curing. Although the engineering properties of the low-pH cement grout used in this study are inferior to those of conventional high-pH cement grout, the utilization of silica fume and micro-cement effectively meets the long-term environmental and durability requirements for cement grout in a radioactive waste repository.
