  • This article presents strain gradient elasticity-based procedures for static bending, free vibration and buckling analyses of functionally graded rectangular micro-plates. The developed method allows consideration of smooth spatial variations of length scale parameters of strain gradient elasticity. Governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by following the variational approach and applying Hamilton's principle. Displacement field is expressed in a unified way to produce numerical results in accordance with Kirchhoff, Mindlin, and third order shear deformation theories. All material properties, including the length scale parameters, are assumed to be functions of the plate thickness coordinate in the derivations. Developed equations are solved numerically by means of differential quadrature method. Proposed procedures are verified through comparisons made to the results available in the literature for certain limiting cases. Further numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of material and geometric parameters on bending, free vibrations, and buckling. The results generated by Kirchhoff and third order shear deformation theories are in very good agreement, whereas Mindlin plate theory slightly overestimates static deflection and underestimates natural frequency. A rise in the length scale parameter ratio, which identifies the degree of spatial variations, leads to a drop in dimensionless maximum deflection, and increases in dimensionless vibration frequency and buckling load. Size effect is shown to play a more significant role as the plate thickness becomes smaller compared to the length scale parameter. Numerical results indicate that consideration of length scale parameter variation is required for accurate modelling of graded rectangular micro-plates.

  • In this study, a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres was fabricated using emulsion solvent evaporation technique. During the procedure fabrication, some parameters process have effected on the formation of micro-carriers. The structure and morphology of micro-carriers were evaluated by SEM observation. Beside, heparin incorporated into microspheres was determined using toluidine blue method. Specifically, the effects of some parameters process such as ultrasonic levels, PLGA concentrations and freeze-dry times on the size, structure, porous formation and heparin entrapment of micro-carriers were studied carefully. We found that, the morphology and structure of carriers were influenced by the all above parameters. The diameter of the carriers varied from 20 to 400 ${\mu}M$ depending on experimental conditions. At suitable freeze-dry time, the pores were automatically formation on surface of microspheres with a significantly in the numbers of pore. After heparin incorporated porous PLGA microspheres, it was suggested that the highly heparin incorporated into porous PLGA microspheres could enhance of angiogenesis for tissue regeneration easily.

  • It is extremely important to obtain rock strength parameters for geological engineering. In this paper, the evolution of sandstone cohesion and internal friction angle with plastic shear strain was obtained by simulating the cyclic loading and unloading tests under different confining pressures using Particle Flow Code software. By which and combined with the micro-crack propagation process, the mesoscopic mechanism of parameter evolution was studied. The results show that with the increase of plastic shear strain, the sandstone cohesion decreases first and then tends to be stable, while the internal friction angle increases first, then decreases, and finally maintains unchanged. The evolution of sandstone shear strength parameters is closely related to the whole process of crack formation, propagation and coalescence. When the internal micro-cracks are less and distributed randomly and dispersedly, and the rock shear strength parameters (cohesion, internal friction angle) are considered to have not been fully mobilized. As the directional development of the internal micro-fractures as well as the gradual formation of macroscopic shear plane, the rock cohesion reduces continuously and the internal friction angle is in the rise stage. As the formation of the macroscopic shear plane, both the rock cohesion and internal friction angle continuously decrease to a certain residual level.

  • Micro-source units having power ratings in thousands of watts can provide power quality with higher reliability and efficiency than the conventional large scale units. This paper develops switching level model of micro-source and studies the characteristics of the micro-grid consisting of multiple micro-sources and interfaced with electric power system. The developed model adopts the space vector PWM to fully utilize the capacity of inverter. The interaction of the grid connected micro-sources and the characteristics of the control system parameters are investigated. Micro-sources and micro-grid are implemented using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results show that the proposed model is efficient for studying micro-grid system.

  • Micro-drill wear deteriorates accuracy and productivity of the micro components. In order to improve productivity and qualify of micro components, it is required to investigate micro-drill wear exactly. In this study, a machine vision system is proposed to measure the wear of micro-drills using a precision servo stage. Calibration experiments are conducted to compensate for the machine vision system. In this paper, worn volume, area and length are defined as wear amounts. Micro-drill wear is reconstructed as the 3D topography and the quantized wear amount by using the shape from focus (SFF) method and wear parameters. Experiments have been conducted with HSS twist micro-drills and SM45C carbon steel workpieces. Validity of the proposed machine vision system is confirmed through experiments.

  • Micro-scale serpentine structure fibers are widely used as flexible sensor in the manufacturing of micro-nano flexible electronic devices because of their outstanding non-linear mechanical properties and organizational flexibility. The use of melt electrowriting (MEW) technology, combined with the axial bending effect of the Taylor cone jet in the process, can achieve the micro-scale serpentine structure fibers. Due to the interference of the process parameters, it is still challenging to achieve the precise deposition of micro-scale and high-consistency serpentine structure fibers. In this paper, the micro-scale serpentine structure fiber is produced by MEW combined with axial bending effect. Based on the controlled deposition of MEW, applied voltage, collector speed, nozzle height and nozzle diameter are adjusted to achieve the precise deposition of micro-scale serpentine structure fibers with different morphologies in a single motion dimension. Finally, the influence mechanism of the above four parameters on the precise deposition of micro-scale serpentine fibers is explored.

  • Micro-machining, one of the non-traditional machining techniques, can achieve a wanted shape of the surface using metal dissolution with electrochemical reaction and can be applied to the metal such as high tension, heat resistance and hardened steel. The workpiece dissolves when it is positioned close to the tool electrode in electrolyte and the current is applied. Traditional machining has been used in the industries such as cutting, deburring, drilling and shaping. The aim of this work is to develop Micro-machining techniques for micro shape by establishing appropriate machining parameters of micro-machining

  • In this paper, flow characteristics of plasma flow in a micro-tube were investigated experimentally using micro particle image velocimetry(micro-PIV). For comparison, the experiments were repeated for deionized(DI) wale. instead of plasma. Both velocity profiles of plasma and do-ionized water are well agreed with the theoretical velocity distribution of newtonian fluid. We also carried out generating plasma-in-oil droplet formation at a Y-junction microchannel. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in plasma droplet formation, Rhodamine-B were mixed with plasma only for visualization of plasma droplet. With oil as the continuous phase and plasma as the dispersed phase, plasma droplet can be generated in a continuous phase flow at a Y-junction. For given experimental parameters, regular-sized droplets are reproducibly formed at a uniform flow conditions.
