Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. In this paper, we have investigated the buckling protection of an inner structure plate and the useful corrugated configuration for contact, and the fabrication method of the inner structure plate for large area using the continuous molding process. Also, we have guaranteed the accuracy of the molding process through the micro corrugated mold fabrication and analyzed aspect properties of the inner structure plate fabricated for a large area using the partial mold process.

The light-weight of the research and development materials is actively carried out by overseas automobile companies and technology development continues in Korea. For the sake of fuel efficiency, the development of lightweight technology by improving the manufacturing method has been very effective. Recently, to maximize the effects of light weight, automotive interior parts have been applied by the micro-cellular injection molding using supercritical fluids and we call the Mucell manufacturing. This technique causes a problem in the quality of the surface of the products, because the shooting cells are revealed as the surface layer of the products by forming micro cells at the center of the products during injection molding. To overcome these phenomenon, we increased the temperature of injection molding using joule heating until critical value. In this study, we have predicted the problem of Mucell injection molding through the finite element analysis as changed the temperature by joule heating. From the result of finite element analysis, we have determined the optimized process and made the injection mold included electric current heating system with Mucell manufacturing analyzed the surface characteristics of the injection product according to changing mold temperature.

A simple method for fabricating micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures is presented using a two-step temperature-directed capillary molding technique. This lithographic method involves a sequential application of molding process in which a uniform polymer-coated surface is molded with a patterned mold by means of capillary force above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Using this approach, multiscale hierarchical structures for biomimetic functional surfaces can be fabricated with precise control over geometrical parameters and the wettability of a solid surface can be designed in a controllable manner.
High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a noncontact procedure. It has been recently applied to the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Though the induction heating has an advantage in terms of its rapid-heating capacity on the mold surface, it still has difficulty in efficient mold temperature control due to the restriction of an induction coil design suitable for the given mold shape. The present study proposed a localized mold heating method by means of selective use of mold material. For localized induction heating, an injection mold composed of ferromagnetic material and paramagnetic material is used. The electromagnetic induction concentrates on the ferromagnetic material, from which we can selectively heat for the local mold elements. The feasibility of the proposed heating method is investigated through an experimental measurement in terms of the heating efficiency on the localized mold surface.

LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display-Back Light Unit) of medium size is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50{\sim}300\;{\mu}m$ in diameter by etching process and V-grove shape with $50\;{\mu}m$ in height by mechanical cutting process. However, the surface of the etched dots is very rough due to the characteristics of the etching process and V-cutting needs rather high cost. Instead of existing optical pattern made by etching and mechanical cutting, 3-dimensional continuous micro-lens of $200\;{\mu}m$ in diameter was applied in the present study. The continuous micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LIGA with thermal reflow process was tested to this new optical design of LGP. The manufacturing process using LIGA-reflow is made up of three stages as follows: (i) the stage of lithography, (ii) the stage of thermal reflow process and (iii) the stage of electroplating. The continuous micro-lens patterned LGP was fabricated with injection molding and its test results showed the possibility of commercial use in the future.

Microlens patterned micro-mold fabrication method for Light Guiding Plate(LGP), kernel part of LCD-BLU(Back Light Unit), was presented. Instead of erosion dot pattern for LCP optical design, microlens pattern, fabricated by LIGA-reflow process, was applied. Optical pattern design method was also developed not only for negative pattern LGP, but also positive pattern LGP. In order to achieve flow balance during the micro-injection molding process and dimensional accuracy, two LGP pattern was made in one micro-mold.
Micro-fluidic chip has been fabricated by lithography process on silicon or glass wafer, casting using PDMS, injection molding of thermoplastics or 3D printing, etc. Among these processes, 3D printing can fabricate micro-fluidic chip directly from the design without master or template for fluidic channel fabricated previously. Due to this direct printing, 3D printing provides very fast and economical method for prototyping micro-fluidic chip comparing to conventional fabrication process such as lithography, PDMS casting or injection molding. Although 3D printing is now used more extensively due to this fast and cheap process done automatically by single printing machine, there are some issues on accuracy or surface characteristics, etc. The accuracy of the shape and size of the micro-channel is limited by the resolution of the printing and printing direction or layering direction in case of SLM type of 3D printing using UV curable resin. In this study, the printing direction and thickness of each printing layer are investigated to see the effect on the size, shape and surface of the micro-channel. A set of micro-channels with different size was designed and arrayed orthogonal. Micro-fluidic chips are 3D printed in different directions to the micro-channel, orthogonal, parallel, or skewed. The shape of the cross-section of the micro-channel and the surface of the micro-channel are photographed using optical microscopy. From a series of experiments, an optimal printing direction and process conditions are investigated for 3D printing of micro-fluidic chip.
In wafer level molding progress, the thermal releasing failure phenomenon is shown up as the important problem. This phenomenon can cause the problem including the warpage, crack of the molded wafer. The thermal releasing failure is due to the insufficiency of adhesion strength degradation of the molding tape. To solve this problem, we studied experimental method increasing the release property of the molding tape through the plasma surface treatment on the wafer substrate. In this research, the vacuum plasma treatment system is used for release property improvement of the molding tape and controls the operating condition of the hydrophilic($O_2$, 100kW, 10min) and hydrophobic($C_2F_6$, 200kW, 10min). In order to perform the peeling test for measuring the releasing force precisely, we remodel the micro scale material property evaluation system developed by Korea institute of industrial technology. In case of hydrophilic surface treatment on the wafer substrate, we can figure out the releasing property of molding tape increase. In order to grasp the effect that it reaches to the release property increase when repeating the hydrophilic treatment, we make an experiment with twice treatment and get the result to increase about 12%. We find out the hydrophilic surface treatment method using plasma can improve releasing property of molding tape in the wafer level molding process.

We investigated properties of PZT composite for medical ultrasonic transducer array (briefly UTA) for medicine applications fabricated by micro pressing and dicing method. Dicing method was the fabrication process of conventional ultrasonic transducer array by dicing sintered PZT sheet. Micro pressing method was the proposed process using pressing PZT green sheet by PMMA micro mold from LIGA process. Microstructures, electrical and electro -mechanical properties of fabricated UTAs of two cases were analyzed. Thickness mode electro-mechanical coupling coefficient of two cases have same values of 51%. Sintered PZT Microstructures of them showed dense and uniform. Micro pressing method was very mass productive process because of using batch type LIGA process. From results, we found micro pressing method was more competitive than dicing method for UTA fabrication. For further study, uniformity of microstructures and electro-mechanical properties of large scale, and fabrication processes of Ni plating and PMMA molding should be improved and investigated.

In the case of fabricating micro pole structures such as column, square-pole and gear shaft by the micro end-milling process, it can be useful in the fields of industry, for example, micro parts, electrode for electrical discharge machining and micro mold for injection molding. In this study, machining factors and the process were analyzed. Machining experiments of various micro pole configurations were performed. Analysis of the change and effect of the cutting force according to the machining conditions was carried out. An analytical study of the deformation of the micro pole caused cutting conditions and cutting force through the finite element method and ANSYS program was carried out. As a result, this research presented a method of fabricating the column pole of below $100{\mu}m$ diameter with high aspect ratio by using micro end-milling process, and based on that, a method of fabricating a variety of applicable structures. Also the minimum size of the pole capable of fabricating through theory and experiment were demonstrated.
