In this study, the general thermal and flow characteristics of flat tube with micro-channels has been studied and the correlation of Nusselt number and friction factor is proposed. The optimal flat tube geometry is determined by optimal design process. It is assumed to be a three dimensional laminar flow in the analysis of thermal and flow characteristics. The periodic boundary condition is applied since the geometry of flat tube with micro-channels shows uniform cross-section in primary flow direction. Local Nusselt number is examined for thermal characteristics of each membrane, and module average Nusselt number and friction factor are calculated to determine the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in overall flat tube with microchannels. The correlations between Nusselt number and friction factor are given by Reynolds number, aspect ratio of membranes, and the width of flat tube. ALM (Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier) method is applied to the correlations to determine an optimal shape of flat tube. It is shown that the optimal aspect ratio of flat tube is approximately 1.0, irrespective of the width of flat tube and Reynolds number.
Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical micro-fin tube have been investigated by experiment. Before a test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. The micro-fin tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as the test section. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 318 to $530\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat fluxes of 15 to $30\;kW/m^2$. As the vapor quality increases, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are increased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase, and there was not much of influence of mass flux on the heat transfer coefficients.
Refrigerant mixtures provide an opportunity to adjust their properties to fit design criteria and a possibility to create new blends that can improve heat transfer characteristics. Therefore, mixture of $CO_2$ and propane is chosen which may be a promising refrigerant and has good environmental compatibility. This paper presents measured heat transfer coefficient data during evaporation process of $CO_2$/propane mixtures flowing upward in vertical smooth and. micro-fin tubes. Smooth and micro-fin tubes with outer diameters of 5 mm and length of 1.44in were selected as test tubes. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to $656kg/m^{2}s$, inlet temperatures of -10 to $30^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and for several compositions (75/25, 50/50, 25/75 wt%). Among $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures, the heat transfer characteristics are much better than that of any compositions when the composition is 75/25 (wt%).
A novel design process of a parallel multi-flow type air-cooled condenser of a dual-loop waste heat recovery system with Rankine steam cycles for improving the fuel efficiency of gasoline automobiles has been investigated focusing on reduction of the pressure drop inside the micro-tubes. The low temperature condenser plays a role to dissipate heat from the system by condensing the low temperature loop working fluid sufficiently. However, the refrigerant has low evaporation temperature enough to recover the waste from engine coolant of about $100^{\circ}C$ but has small saturation enthalpy so that excessive mass flow rate of the LT working fluid, e.g., over 150 g/s, causes enormously large pressure drop of the working fluid to maintain the heat dissipation performance of more than 20 kW. This paper has dealt with the scheme to design the low temperature condenser that has reduced pressure drop while ensuring the required thermal performance. The number of pass, the arrangement of the tubes of each pass, and the positions of the inlet and outlet ports on the header are most critical parameters affecting the flow uniformity through all the tubes of the condenser. For the purpose of the performance predictions and the parametric study for the LT condenser, we have developed a 1-dimensional user-friendly performance prediction program that calculates feasibly the phase change of the working fluid in the tubes. An example is presented through the proposed design process and compared with an experiment.

This paper presents a novel electrostatic drop-on-demand inkjet device featured by a MEMS fabricated pole-type and hole-type nozzle with tube shaped orifice and investigates the feasibility of applying the inkjet device to display fabrication process. The electric voltage signal applied to the ring shaped upper electrode plate, against the hole-shaped ground or pole-shaped ground, referred here pole-type and hole-type nozzle respectively, allows ejection of small droplet to take place: That is, a tiny droplet is taken away from the peak of the mountain shaped liquid meniscus formed at the nozzle orifice. It is verified experimentally that the use of the pole type nozzle allows a stable and sustainable micro-dripping mode of droplet ejection for a wider range of applied voltages and of liquid viscosities. This demonstrates a feasibility of electrostatic drop-on-demand inkjet device as a disruptive alternative to conventional print heads such as thermal bubble or piezoelectric inkjet heads.
In order to develop a compact evaporator, experiments that show characteristics of evaporating heat transfer and pressure drop in the helically coiled minichannel were performed in our previous research. This study was focused on the performance analysis of helically coiled heat exchangers with circular minichannels with an inner diameter=1.0 mm. The working fluid was R-22, and the properties of R-22 were estimated using the REFPROP program. Numerical simulation was performed to compare results with the experimental results of the helically coiled heat exchanger. As the heat transfer rate and pressure drop were calculated at the micro segment of the branch channels, the performance of the evaporator was evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained through the numerical simulations of the helically coiled heat exchanger. It showed good performance when the flow rate of each branch channels was suitable to heat load of air-side. The numerical simulation value agreed with experimental results within ${\pm}15%$. In this study, a numerical simulation program was developed to estimate the performance of a helically coiled evaporator. And, an optimum helically coiled minichannels evaporator was designed.
Drop impact reliability assessment of solder joints on the flip chip is one of the critical issues for micro system packaging. Our previous researches have been showing that new solder ball compositions of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu has better mechanical reliability than Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu. In this paper, dynamic reliability analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is carried out to assess the factors affecting flip chip in drop simulation. The design parameters are size and thickness of chip, and size, pitch and array of solder ball with composition of Sn1.0Ag0.5Cu. The board systems by JEDEC standard including 15 chips, solder balls and PCB are modeled with various design parameter combinations, and through these simulations, maximum yield stress and strain at each chip are shown at the solder balls. It is found that larger chip size, smaller chip array, smaller ball diameter, larger pitch, and larger chip thickness have bad effect on maximum yield stress and strain at solder ball of each chip.
A microchannel PCHE is manufactured by the two technologies of micro photo-etching and diffusion bonding. In this paper, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics by applying various configuration for the flow channel in the microchannel PCHE is experimentally investigated. The flow channel configurations are designed three types such as straight, wavy and offset strip channels. The performance experiment of each configuration is performed for Reynolds numbers in ranges of $100{\sim}700$ under various flow conditions for the hot side and the Reynolds number of cold side is fixed at 350. The inlet temperatures of the hot side and cold side are conducted as $40^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. The heat transfer performance of wavy channel, which was similar to that of offset strip channel, was much higher than that of straight channel. The effectiveness of wavy channel and offset strip channel was evaluated as about $0.5{\sim}0.9$. The pressure drop of wavy channel was highest among configurations and that of offset strip channel was lower than that of straight channel because the round curved surface of each strip edge was reduced the pressure loss.
In order to investigate $CO_2$ heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop by PAG oil concentration during $CO_2$ evaporation, the experiment on evaporation heat transfer characteristics in a horizontal micro-fin tube was performed. The experimental apparatus consisted of a test section, a DC power supply, a heater, a chiller, a mass flow meter, a pump and a measurement system. Experiment was conducted for various mass fluxes($400{\sim}1200\;kg/m^2s$), heat fluxes($10{\sim}30\;kW/m^2$) and saturation temperatures ($-5{\sim}5^{\circ}C$), and PAG oil concentration($0{\sim}5\;wt%$). The variation of the heat transfer coefficient was different in accordance with the oil concentration. With the increase of the oil concentration, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient decreased and the delay of dryout by oil addition was found. Pressure drop increased with the increase of the oil concentration and heat flux, and the decrease of saturation temperature.
