Accurate modeling of contact interface in bolted joints is crucial in predicting the dynamic behavior for bolted assemblies under external load. This paper presents a contact pressure distribution based non-uniform virtual material method to describe the joint interface of assembly structure, which is connected by sparsely distributed multi-bolts. Firstly, the contact pressure distribution of bolted joints is obtained by the nonlinear static analysis in the finite element software ANSYS. The contact surface around bolt hole is divided into several sub-layers, and contact pressure in each sub-layer is thought to be evenly. Then, considering multi-asperity contact at the micro perspective, the relationship between contact pressure and interfacial virtual material parameters for each sub-layer is established by using the fractal contact theory. Finally, an experimental platform for the dynamic characteristics testing of a beam lap structure with double-bolted joint is constructed to validate the efficiency of proposed method. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental results by impact response in both time- and frequency-domain, and the relative errors of the first four natural frequencies are less than 1%. Furthermore, the presented model is used to examine the effect of rough contact surface on dynamic characteristics of bolted joint.

In this paper, a finite element method for predicting the temperature and stress distributions in micro-machining is presented. The work material is oxygen-free-high-conductivity copper(OFHC copper) and its flow stress is taken as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature in order to reflect realistic behavior in machining process. From the simulation, a lot of information on the micro-machining process can be obtained; cutting force, cutting temperature, chip shape, distributions of temperature and stress, etc. The calculated cutting force was found to agree with the experiment result with the consideration of friction characteristics on chip-tool contact region. Because of considering the tool edge radius, this cutting model using the finite element method can analyze the micro-machining with the very small depth of cut, almost the same size of tool edge radius, and can observe the 'size effect' characteristic. Also the effects of temperature and friction on micro-machining were investigated.
The roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication method to make micro-scale pillar arrays for biomimetic functionalization of surfaces is presented. Inspired by the micro-structure of plants in nature, a surface with a synthetic micro-scale pillar array is fabricated via maskless photolithography. After the surface is SAM (self-assembled monolayer) coated with trichlorosilane in a vacuum desiccator, it displays a hydrophobic property even in R2R replicas of original substrate, whose properties are further characterized using various pitches and diameters. In order to perform a comparison between the original micro-pattern and its replicas, surface morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and wetting characteristics were measured via a contact angle measurement tool with a $10{\mu}L$ water droplet. Efficient roll-to-roll imprinting for a biomimetic functionalized surface has the potential for use in many fields ranging from water repelling and self-cleaning to microfluidic chips.

Extraction of photosynthetic currents from thylakoids was studied using micro pillar structured electrode. Thylakoids were isolated from spinach leaves, and the size and shape of thylakoids were estimated from scanning electron microscopy images. Based on the geometry information of thylakoids, micro pillar shaped electrode was designed and fabricated using metal-assisted chemical etching of silicon wafers. Influence of photovoltaic effect on the silicon-based micro pillar electrode was confirmed to be negligible. Photosynthetic currents were measured in a three-electrode setup with an electron mediator, potassium ferricyanide. Photosynthetic currents from micro pillar electrodes were enhanced compared with the currents from flat electrodes. This indicates the significance of the enhanced contact between thylakoids and an electrode for harvesting photosynthetic electrons.

In many practical lubricated contacts such as a rough concentrated contact on the sliding of nominally flat surfaces, the fluid may be of molecular (nanometer) scale owing to the asperity interactions on the surfaces. Under this condition, there is insufficient lubricant on the concentrated contact spot to maintain a realistic continuum. Rheological behavior for this kind of concentrated contact was studied to know whether the application of viscous fluid model is appropriate. The interaction of two rough surfaces is simplified as perfectly flat-rough surfaces contact under certain conditions by "composite topography" and for a nanometer scale fluid film, three kinds of rheological fluid behavior are analyzed in elastohydrodynamic asperity point contact.t contact.

LHP is different from a conventional heat pipes in design and heat and fluid flow passages. The situations of the former is much complex than the latter. In LHPs, evaporation occurs at the contact interface between the heating plate and the porous wick, so some micro channels machined at the contact interface serve to let the vapor flow out of the evaporator. This complexity of contact geometry was known to cause a high resistance to heat flow. The present work was to study the problem of heat passage across the contact surface for LHPs and determine those values contact resistance. For two cases of contact structures, the thermal contact resistances were examined experimentally, one being obtained through mechanical contact under pressure and the other through sintered bonding. Nickel powder wick and copper plate were used for specimens. The result showed that a substantial reduction of contact resistance of an order of degree could be obtainable by sintered bonding.

Roughness of rock joint has generally been characterized based upon geometrical aspects of a two-dimensional surface profile. The appropriate description of joint roughness, however, should consider the features of roughness mobilization at contact areas under normal and shear loads. In this study, direct shear tests were conducted on the replicas of tensile fractured gneiss joints and the influence of the shear direction on the shear behavior and effective roughness was examined. In this procedure, a joint surface was represented as a group of triangular planes, and the steepness of each plane was characterized using the concepts of the active and inactive micro-slope angles. The contact areas at peak strength which were estimated by a numerical method showed that the locations of the contact areas were mainly dependent on the distribution of the micro-slope angle and the shear behavior of joint was dominated by only the fractions with active micro-slope angles. Therefore, a three-dimensional coefficient for the quantification of rock joint roughness is proposed based on the distribution of active micro-slope angle: active roughness coefficient, $C_r$. Comparison of the active roughness coefficient and the peak shear strength obtained from the experiment suggests that the active roughness coefficient is the effective parameter to quantify the surface roughness and estimate the shear behavior of rock joint.
Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a novel method of fabricating nanometer scale patterns. It is a simple process with low cost, high throughput and resolution. NIL creates patterns by mechanical deformation of an imprint resist and physical contact process. The imprint resist is typically a monomer or polymer formulation that is cured by heat or UV light during the imprinting process. Stiction between the resist and the stamp is resulted from this physical contact process. Stiction issue is more important in the stamps including narrow pattern size and wide area. Therefore, the antistiction layer coating is very effective to prevent this problem and ensure successful NIL. In this paper, an antistiction layer was deposited and characterized by PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) method for metal stamps. Deposition rates of an antistiction layer on Si and Ni substrates were in proportion to deposited time and 3.4 nm/min and 2.5 nm/min, respectively. A 50 nm thick antistiction layer showed 90% relative transmittance at 365 nm wavelength. Contact angle result showed good hydrophobicity over 105 degree. $CF_2$ and $CF_3$ peaks were founded in ATR-FTIR analysis. The thicknesses and the contact angle of a 50 nm thick antistiction film were slightly changed during chemical resistance test using acetone and sulfuric acid. To evaluate the deposited antistiction layer, a 50 nm thick film was coated on a stainless steel stamp made by wet etching process. A PMMA substrate was successfully imprinting without pattern degradations by the stainless steel stamp with an antistiction layer. The test result shows that antistiction layer coating is very effective for NIL.
Recently, biological technology industry shows great development. Instruments and systems related biological technology have been developed actively. In this paper, we developed a new micro end-effector for biological cell manipulation. The existing micro end-effector for biological cell manipulation has not any force sensing mechanism. Usually, excessive contact force occurring when the end-effector and a cell collide might make a damage on the cell. However, unfortunately, user can not notice the condition in case of using the existing end-effector. In order to overcome we proposed the improved micro end-effector having a force sensing mechanism. This paper presents the design concepts of the new micro end-effector. We carried out calibration of the force sensor and tested the performance of the proposed micro end-effector. Through a series of experiments the new micro end-effector shows the possibility of application for precision biological cell manipulation such as DNA operation
This study is about how to lower the driving voltage that enables to move the micro droplet by the EWOD (Electro Wetting On Dielectric) mechanism. EWOD is well known that it is used ${\mu}-TAS$ digital micro fluidics system. As the device which is fabricated with dielectric layer between electrode and micro droplet is applied voltage, the hydrophobic surface is changed into the hydrophilic surface by electrical property. Therefore, EWOD induces the movement of micro droplet with reducing contact angle of micro droplet. The driving voltage was depended on the dielectric constant of dielectric layer, thus it can be reduced by increase of dielectric constant. Typically, very high voltage ($100V{\sim}$) is used to move the micro droplet. In previous study, we used $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ as the dielectric layer and driving voltage was 23V that reduced 24 percent compared with $SiO_2$. In this study, we used $BZN(Bi_{2}O_{3}ZnO-Nb_{2}O_{5})$ layer which had high dielectric constant. It was operated the just 12V. And micro droplet was moved within Is on 15V. It was reduced the voltage until 35 percents compare with $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ and 50 percents compare with $SiO_2$. The movement of micro droplet within 1s was achieved with BZN (ferroelectrics)just on 15V.
