  • It is important to secure green spaces to solve the urban heat island phenomenon, which is among problems resulted by high-density developments in metropolitan areas. However, it is hard to secure such green spaces in established urban areas so Green Rooftop development approaches have recently been highlighted and introduced as a solution to the situation. The present study conducts a simulation on residential areas in urbanized regions to quantitatively evaluate the effects of green rooftop developments through a comparison of changes in the air temperatures before and after relevant development projects. According to the evaluation results, when the green roof top development is conducted in the available areas, the temperature is reduced by 0.14 degree. The extension of green project to the entire building showed the reduction of the temperature by 0.29 degree. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the green rooftop development is a practically solution for reducing the air temperature of urbanized areas.

  • Except the time when relics of a museum are exhibited or loaned to the public, they are stored in a storage. In addition, it is common view that collections are exhibited a few of total stored collections in a museum. Therefore, the environmental condition of a storage is an important factor. Hereby, the purpose of this study is to suggest the design guidelines of a storage for conservation of relics in a museum. The results from this study are as follows briefly. First, location of storages has to be located and centralized above ground against preservation environment and additional renovation. Second, for storage size, It is reasonable to secure long-term experimental data after planning about 20% of whole section in present domestic situation. Third, in order to prevent environmental deterioration due to short storage floor space, adequate storage height has to be secured against a mezzanine deck and spare storages need to be planned. Where a mezzanine deck is designed, detailed plans have to be supported for equal micro climate in a storage. Fourth, in respect of environmental control of storages, finish materials with adjustment ability on relative humidity have to be used after the system is installed jointly direct and indirect way by air chamber, considering domestic condition for management of intermittent ventilation.

  • Hydroseeding technique is a very popular method of revegetating slope areas through the control of soil erosion and stability by seeding grasses. This study was conducted to select turfgrass species and cultivars for hydroseeding. Experiment plots were established on various soil types and environmental conditions at Singar-Ansan high-way construction site. The investigation was designed in three cutting, one back-filling and other three spare sites with various seed mixtures. Results indicated that combinations of seed mixtures influenced seed germination and rates of surface cover. In a view of long term, vegetation shifts should be influenced by characters of slopes and micro-climate conditions. Hydroseeding did not show good results on rocky slope areas. Revegetation was only going on where there had soil. The combination of seed mixture with a higher rate of perennial ryegrass had relatively good revegetation with faster germination and seedling growth. Improved turf-type tall fescue Arid ⓡ and Falcon ⓡ seemed to have good environ-mental adaptation and drought tolerance. Wild or old type cultivars showed relatively slow green-up in spring and growth rates at the next year of seeding. For the harmonious landscaping with surrounding area, the combination of native grass mixture with cool-season grasses had good results. Slow and low revegetation rate at hack-filling site seemed to be caused by the poor development of capillary tubes in sub-soil. It was shown that a high correlation between seed germination and revegetation rate, and between three-month later coverage rate and final rate. The evaluation of coverage rate after three month seems to he acceptable to decide the accomplishment of hydroseeding results on rode side slopes.

  • Purpose: In this study, pollutants generated in industrial areas were measured using a Portable Air Quality Measurement System(PAQMS). This study intends to examine in detail improvement measures and operational capabilities to operate a more efficient PAQMS. Research design, data and methodology: This study compares and analyzes the measurement values of the PAQMS and the measurement values of the national air quality measurement network. It is intended to develop a PAQMS corresponding to the data of the national measurement network by minimizing the errors that occur during comparative measurement and analysis and supplementing and improving the problems that occur during the current equipment calibration. Results: A PAQMS is an essential equipment for faster and more accurate measurement and analysis of pollutants in case of untimely measurement and civil complaints due to Micro Climate(local weather and environmental influences). Currently, there are many atmospheric measurement equipment in Korea, but only equipment for each item is produced and sold. Currently, these devices on the market must satisfy various conditions such as stable power, temperature, and humidity to calculate accurate measurement values. Conclusions: Therefore, there is no equipment that satisfies the conditions for performing detailed measurement in the field where accurate measurement is required. In this study, these field work conditions and contents for stable measurement were mentioned in the text.

  • In Korea, more than 30,000 tons of waste Styrofoam are produced every year. Styrofoam is spent more than 500 years decomposing during the reclamation process, so it needs to be recycled. The recycling rate of waste styrofoam continues to be the third highest in the world, but it is lower than that of Germany and Japan. Therefore, measures are needed to increase the recycling rate of waste Styropol. Another problem is that cement is mainly used in existing lightweight foam concrete. However, large amounts of CO2 from cement-producing processes cause environmental pollution. Currently, Korea is increasing its greenhouse gas reduction targets to cope with energy depletion and climate change, and accelerating efforts to identify and implement reduction measures for each sector. In 2013 alone, about 600 million tons of carbon dioxide was generated in the cement industry. Therefore, this study replaces CO2 generation cement with furnace slag fine powder, uses crude steel cement for initial strength development of bubble concrete, and manufactures hardening materials to study its properties using waste styrofoam. As a result of the experiment, the hardening agent replaced by micro powder of furnace slag was less intense and more prone to absorption than cement using ordinary cement. Further experiments on the segmentation and strength replenishment of furnace slag are believed to contribute to the manufacture of environmentally friendly lightweight foam concrete.

  • Deep learning methods and their application have become an essential part of prediction and modeling in water-related research areas, including hydrological processes, climate change, etc. It is known that application of deep learning leads to high availability of data sources in hydrology, which shows its usefulness in analysis of precipitation, runoff, groundwater level, evapotranspiration, and so on. However, there is still a limitation on microclimate analysis and prediction with deep learning methods because of deficiency of gauge-based data and shortcomings of existing technologies. In this study, a real-time rainfall prediction model was developed from a sky image data set with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). These daily image data were collected at Chung-Ang University and Korea University. For high accuracy of the proposed model, it considers data classification, image processing, ratio adjustment of no-rain data. Rainfall prediction data were compared with minutely rainfall data at rain gauge stations close to image sensors. It indicates that the proposed model could offer an interpolation of current rainfall observation system and have large potential to fill an observation gap. Information from small-scaled areas leads to advance in accurate weather forecasting and hydrological modeling at a micro scale.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of row cover materials supported by flexible FRP frames with three kinds of non-woven fabric, and five kinds of net in leaf vegetable cultivation. Leaf radish (Raphanus sativus L.), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) were sown on May 21, 2003, and leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was planted at the same date in Agricultural Research Center for Climate Change, Jeju, Korea. Net coverings showed higher light transmittance than in non-woven fabric coverings. The average air and soil temperatures increased by $0.3{\sim}1.0^{\circ}C$ in net coverings and $0.5{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ in non-woven fabric coverings, respectively. There was no difference in relative humidity among the covering materials. All the vegetables showed higher growths and yields in non-woven coverings than in non-covering. The yields increased 81% in leaf lettuce, 58% in leaf radish, and 93% in Chinese cabbage, respectively. In addition, the insect damages were considerably reduced in the row covering plots than in the control, especially in non-woven fabric coverings.

  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on the reduction of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) which can help improve ecological functions in cities and mitigation of climate change, through quantifying $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration by the process of photosynthesis of some plants. Experiment of $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration was conducted by measurement of $CO_2$ exchange rate using the infrared gas analyzer, for 7 month, growing season from May to November 2009, 2 times a month. The result was as follows; The $CO_2$ uptake quantity per $cm^2$ of Chrysanthemum zawadskii was the highest rate at $21.47{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$ and Poa pratensis was $16.20g{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$. The stronger was light of intensity, the higher were $CO_2$ uptake rate of most plants. In quantity of evapotranspiration, Poa pratensis was the highest rate at $8.75{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$ and Aquilegia buergariana was $8.66{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$. From this study, it is confirmed that artificial ground greening has capacity of absorption $CO_2$ and effects on improving urban microclimate.
