Red blood cells (RBCs) are customarily adhered to a bio-functionalised substrate to make them stationary in interferometric phase-imaging modalities. This can make them susceptible to receive alterations in innate morphology due to their own weight. Optical tweezers (OTs) often driven by Gaussian profile of a laser beam is an alternative modality to overcome contact-induced perturbation but at the same time a steeply focused laser beam might cause photo-damage. In order to address both the photo-damage and substrate adherence induced perturbations, we were motivated to stabilize the RBC in OTs by utilizing a laser beam of ‘arbitrary intensity profile’ generated by a source having cavity imperfections per se. Thus the immobilized RBC was investigated for phase-imaging with sinusoidal interferograms generated by a compact and robust Michelson interferometer which was designed from a cubic beam splitter having one surface coated with reflective material and another adjacent coplanar surface aligned against a mirror. Reflected interferograms from bilayers membrane of a trapped RBC were recorded and analyzed. Our phase-imaging set-up is limited to work in reflection configuration only because of the availability of an upright microscope. Due to RBC’s membrane being poorly reflective for visible wavelengths, quantitative information in the signal is weak and therefore, the quality of experimental results is limited in comparison to results obtained in transmission mode by various holographic techniques reported elsewhere.
This paper deals with the development of Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) that can mea~ure the tlequency and amphlude of the ultrasonic vibralion. Hc-Ne laser (632.8 om) is used as a light source, and Michelson interferometer in winch frequency of the objective beam is shIfted by Bragg cell IS adopted The frequency modulated signal centered at 40 MHz flom the PIN diode IS amplified. down-col1vel1ed to 2.5 MHz, filtered and digiLized. The voltage output that is proportional to the velocity of the vibratwg surface is obtawed using digItal PLL. A microprocessor is used to extract the frequcncy aud amplitude of the vibratIOn from the voltage output. It is found that the developed LDV can measure up to 300 kHz vibratIOn and the mlillmUITI measurable amplitude is I nm at 300 kHz. We believe thatlhis LDV can be used to measure the vibratIOn of the heavy electric maclllnery and micro-size structures. tures.

As a noninvasive imaging meathod, optical coherence tomography system has been extensively studied because it has some advantage such as imaging of high resolution, low cost, and compace size configuration. The optical power of the sample signal reflected from an object is usually very small in optical coherence tomography(OCT) due to absorption and scattering in a sample material. Furthermore, there happens a serious loss of sample signal power in a fiber coupler because it does not transfer to a photodetector but return to the optical source. In order to improve the SNR of OCT system, basic Michelson and Mach-Zehnder interferometer types were configured then, we compared simulation with measurement of reference sample Therefore, an On in configuration of Math-Zehnder interferometer was demonstrated in order to improve the signal to noise ratio

Unlike conventional optical coherence tomography systems based on Michelson interferometer, we suggest a common-path OCT system, which does not include a separated configuration between reference signal and sample signal. We optimize the refractive index of partial reflecting probe to induce a balanced intensity of the reference signal. At the end of the probe, convex lens was optimally fabricated to get images of biological samples in the position of focus. Using the experimental system, we could get 2-D images of various biological samples.
In this study, we have used newly developed dual-beam shearography which is based on laser speckle that includes various information about an object. Among the several shearing techniques, we used Michelson shearing interference technique which is the most powerful. Acrylate plate was used as a sample, which has inner defects and low thermal conductivity. Michelson shearing interferometer was used for obtaining speckle fringes. We also used phase shifting technique to get a phase map. Using single beam illumination, we could obtain mixture of deformation components of both in-plane and out-of-plane. In order to separate the two components, we have used dual-beam shearography technique. We have obtained a speckle pattern of both before and after deformation. Through LS filtering and unwrapping processes, we could find a position and a shape of the inner defects easily. Deformation of the acrylate plate due to thermal heating has occurred mainly in z-direction(out-of-plane) because it has low thermal conductivity. The acrylate plate was deformed only at the restricted area where the electrical heat applied.

In this paper, we have studied the OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) system which has been advantages of high resolution, 2-D cross-sectional images, low cost and small size configuration. The characteristics of light source determine the resolution and coherence length. The light source has a commercial SLD with a central wavelength of 1,285 ill11, 35.3 nm(FWHM). The optical delay line is necessary to make equal with the optical path length to scattered light or reflected light from a sample. In order to make equal the optical path length, the stage that is attached to a reference mirror is controled by a step motor. And the interferometer is configured with the Michelson interferometer by using a single mode fiber, and the scanner can be focused on the sample by using a reference ann Also, the 2-dimension cross-sectional images were measured with scanning the transverse direction of the sample by using a step motor. After detecting the internal signal of lateral direction, a scanner is moved to obtain the cross-sectional image of 2-dimension by using step motor. A photodiode, which has high detection sensitivity and excellent noise characteristics has been used. The detected small signal has a noise and interference. After filtering and amplifying the signal, the output signal is demodulated the waveform And then, a cross-sectional image is seen through converting this signal into a digitalized signal by using an AID converter. The resolution of the sample is about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, which corresponds to the theoretical resolution. Also, the cross-sectional images of onion cells were measured in real time scheme.
In this paper, a sensor material with Fe/Zr multilayer thin film, in which the change in the magnetization and strain with hydrogenation is maximized, were developed. Compositionally modulated (CM) Fe/Zr multilayers with a $Fe_{80}Zr_{20}$ composition and modulation wavelengths ($\lambda$) $3~50{\AA}$ were deposited by sequentially sputtering (RF diode) elemental Fe and Zr targets. The films were electrolytically hydrogenated to select the optimum Fe/Zr multilayers that show the maximum increases in the magnetization and strain with hydrogenation. The changes in the magnetic properties of the thin films after hydrogenation, were measured using a hysteresis graph and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and the strains induced in the films by hydrogenation were also measured using a laser heterodyne interferometer (LHI). The optimum sensor material selected was incorporated in a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor (that can sense indirectly amount of hydrogen injected) by depositing it directly on the sensing arm of a single-mode fiber Michelson interferometer. The developed sensor holds significant promise for non-destructive test evaluation (NDE) applications because it is expected to be useful for detecting easily and accurately the subsurface corrosion in structural systems.

Since the operation of the King Sejong Station (KSS) started in Antarctic Peninsula in 1989, there have been continuous efforts to perform the observation for the upper atmosphere. The observations during the initial period of the station include Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) and Michelson Interferometer for the mesosphere and thermosphere, which are no longer in operation. In 2002, in collaboration with York University, Canada, the Spectral Airglow Temperature Imager (SATI) was installed to observe the temperature in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region and it has still been producing the mesopause temperature data until present. The observation was extended by installing the meteor radar in 2007 to observe the neutral winds and temperature in the MLT region during the day and night in collaboration with Chungnam National University. We also installed the all sky camera in 2008 to observe the wave structures in the MLT region. All these observations are utilized to study on the physical characteristics of the MLT region and also on the wave phenomena such as the tide and gravity wave in the upper atmosphere over KSS that is well known for the strong gravity wave activity. In this article, brief introductions for the currently operating instruments at KSS will be presented with their applications for the study of the upper atmosphere.
In typical spectroscopic ellipsometry, the optical and geometrical properties of thin film and nano pattern can be obtained by measuring the polarization state of light reflected/transmitted from the object by rotating a analyzer or a compensator. We proposed a snapshot spectroscopic ellipsometric system based on a modified Michelson interferometer to overcome the time-consuring measurement principle due to rotating part. The proposed system provides spectral ellipsometric parameters (psi, delta) in real time by using a single spectral interference signal generated in the interferometric polarization module. However, it has a long-term stability problem resulting in delta(k) drift. In this paper, it is experimentally proved that the drift problem is caused by anisotropic refractive index change of the beam intersection layer in beam splitter of interferometer.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is high resolution medical imaging system which is obtaining image inside biological objects with non-destructive method. OCT system is based on Michelson interferometer with a reciprocating mirror in the reference arm and a biological object in the sample arm. The obtained OCT image suffers from a granular or mottled image, called speckle. Speckle is caused by random interferences between reflected coherence waves. In this paper, we propose effective speckle reduction method that uses wavelet transform. With wavelet domain image, sub-windowing and thresholding are performed. Finally, speckle reduction experiments for Misgurnus mizolepis skin and rat eye images are shown.
