Mesophilic and Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Swine Manure (中溫및 高溫嫌氣性消化에 의한 豚糞處理)

  • This study was made to evaluate the temperature effects on anaerobic digestion of swine manure. A laboratory single-stage, high-rate, anaerobic digester was operated at 10, 20 and 30 day's HRT at the temperature of 35$\circ$C or 55$\circ$C. The conclusions from this study are as follows: (1) COD and BOD reductions were similar in both the mesophilic and thermophilic digestions. (2) With thermophilic digestion, volatile reduction increased to 67%, as compared with 60% of mesophilic digestion. With thermophilic digestion, the pH increased to 8.5 as compared with 8.0 of mesophilic digestion. With thermophilic digestion, the concentration of volatile acid increased to 763 mg/l, as compared with 250 mg/l of mesophilic digestion. While the gas was produced by mesophilic digestion at 0.74m$^3$/kg of VS fed, it increased to 0.87 m$^3$/kg VS fed by thermophilic digestion. The refractory VS was about 25% of the infiuent VS.

  • The study contributes in the treatment of waste generated by the textile complex cotton of Draa Ben Khedda, Algeria. The azo dye "Direct Red Solophenyle 4GE" represents the base particle of the discharges and electrocoagulation with nanofiltration are used as a means of treatment. The solar photovoltaic is suitable for electrochemical process to reduce the energy cost. Several study parameters are considered in this work. The electrocoagulation batch gives the best reduction 37% for a dye concentration of 7.21 mg/L ($[NaCl]_{added}$=1g/L; $j=25.2mA/cm^2$). Coupling methods (electrocoagulation-nonofiltration) gives a complete discoloration rejecting concentration 52.4 mg/L (pHi = 7.6, $[NaCl]_{added}$=3g/L, $j=2.13mA/cm^2$). The result shows the coupling efficiency with a reduced amount of resulting slurry at the end of treatment.

Synthesis of $\beta$-SiC Whiskers by Decomposition-Carbonization of Mullite (물라이트의 환원분해 및 탄화법에 의한 $\beta$-SiC 휘스커의 합성)

  • $\beta$-SiC whiskers could be formed from a system of mullite-carbon-hydrogen by VLS mechanism at elevated temperatures. It was considered that methane gases were generated from the reaction of hydrogen gases with carbon black, and were reacted with mullite to produce two kinds of gases; silicon suboxide (SiO) and carbon monoxide (CO) of precursors of SiC. With increasing the synthesizing temperature up to 146$0^{\circ}C$, the formation of $\beta$-SiC whisker increased from 0.58 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 3.98 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ on the basis of unit area of carbon block, and the diameters of whiskers had their uniformity due to the reduction in stacking faults.

Clarification of Persimmon Vinegar Using Chitosan (Chitosan을 이용한 감식초의 청징화)

  • The effects of chitosans with two different molecular weights (150 and 37 kDa) on the clarification of persimmon vinegar were investigated. The coagulated solids increased with increasing chitosan concentrations. Chitosan treatment had no effect on pH and acidity. Turbidity, browning, contents of tannin and soluble solids decreased with increasing chitosan concentrations. An increase in chitosan concentration resulted in an increase in color L* value and a decrease in a* and b* values. Reduction in turbidity and tannin contents somewhat differed depending on the molecular weights of chitosan. In sensory evaluation, chitosan treatment did not affect color and flavor over all concentrations tested. However, astringent taste was noticeably strong by treatment with 500mg/L chitosan, resulting in low overall acceptability. Therefore, the most effective clarification of persimmon vinegar was achieved by treatment with 400mg/L chitosan, irrespective of molecular weight.

  • This study observed change of survival rate, activity and foot structure of the equilateral venus (Gomphina veneriformis) exposed to cadmium. Survival rate and activity of the clam exposed to cadmium was reduced with increase of exposure duration and concentration. Change of survival rate and activity was observed in the early exposure time (7 days) in the condition of above 1 77 mg/L and 0.88 mg/L, respectively. Activity reduction of the clam exposed to cadmium seems to be caused by epidermal layer deformation, muscle fiber fragmentation and muscular layer collapse of the foot.

Adsoption Removal of PCBs by Activated Carbon (활성탄에 의한 PCBs의 흡착제거)

  • In this study, adsorption characteristics of PCBs on granular activated carbon were experimentally investigated in a batch reactor and in a fixed bed reactor. Granular activated carbon removed above 98.4% of initial concentration, 1000mg/L, of PCBs. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of PCBs on granular activated carbon was more successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the concentration range from 1 to 1000mg/L. Because Freundlich parameter, ${\beta}$ is 0.346, removall treatment of PCBs by activated carbon accounts for the fact that toxicity reduction can be achieved through this process. Appearance time of breakthrough curve is faster with the increase flow rate and inflow concentration of liquid. The utility of granular activated carbon is enhanced with the increase of bed height and with the decrease of inflow rate.

Physical Dependence on DA-5018, a Non-narcotic Analgesic Agent (비 마약성 진통제 DA-5018의 신체의존성)

  • The physical dependence potency of DA-5018, a non-narcotic analgesic agent, was tested in mice dosed with 0.5 and 4 mg/kg/day for 2 months and daily increasing doses of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mg/kg over 10 days. Physical dependence was assessed taking natural withdrawal induced morphine-type abstinence (jumping, falling, biting or backward locomotion, rearing etc.) as well as barbiturates-type abstinence (body weight reduction, convulsion, ataxia etc.) into consideration. The results were compared with those after the same daily increasing doses of morphine. DA-5018 did not show evidence of physical dependence liability or abuse potential as measured by morphine-type or barbiturate-type abstinence signs following daily increasing or 2-month repeated administration. On the other hand, daily increasing doses of morphine produced physical dependence and the dependent state disappeared about 6 hours after the start of withdrawal signs. In the single dose suppression test, a single dose of morphine completely suppressed natural withdrawal signs that appeared in morphine-dependent animals. Therefore, these results indicate that DA-5018 does not have abuse potential and physical dependence liability.

Drug Interaction between Nimodipine and Cyclosporine in Rabbits (가토에서 니모디핀과 싸이크로스포린과의 약물상호작용)

  • The purpose of this study was to report the pharmacokinetic changes of cyclosporine after oral administration of cyclosporine, 10 mg/kg, in rabbits coadministered or pretreated twice per day for 3 days with nimodipine, dose of 5 mg/kg. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) of cyclosporine was significantly higher in rabbits pretreated with nimodipine than that in control rabbits (p<0.01), showing about 149% increased relative bioavailability. The peak plasma concentration (C$_{max}$), elimination half-life (t$_{1}$2/) and MRT of cyclosporine were increased significantly (p<0.05) in rabbits pretreated with nimodipine compared with those in control rabbits. This findings could be due to significant reduction of elimination rate constant and total body clearance by pretreated with nimodipine. The effects of nimodipine on the pharmacokinetics of oral cyclosporine were more considerable in rabbits pretreated with nimodipine compared with those in control rabbits. The results suggest that the dosage of cyclosporine should be adjusted when the drug would be coadministered chronically with nimodipine in a clinical situation.n.

Oxidative Stability of Tocopherols on Korean Sesame oil and chinese Sesame oil (한국산 참깨기름과 중국산 참깨기름의 토코페롤 산화안정성)

  • Six sesame oils prepared from Korean and Chinese sesame were oxidized at 40$^{\circ}C$ for 16 weeks in a dark place. Effects of oxidative stability on tocopherols of those sesame oils were studied in related to chemical changes in the oils. All oil samples showed that the rate of tocopherol reduction was increased by the storage time. The changes of peroxide value, free fatty acid, carbonyl content were not caused in direct relation to the tocopherols oxidation. The amount of total tocopherol in the Korean sesame oil ranged from 48.7-50.3mg/100g and Chinese seseame oil ranged from 42.4-44.7 mg/100g According to the three individual tocopherols remaining content after 16weeks, ${\gamma}$-,${\alpha}$-,${\beta}$- tocopherol showed 70%, 30%, 20% of initial concentrations in the oils respectively. There was no significant difference between Korean and Chinese sesame oil except the higher total amount of the tocopherol in Korean sesame oil than that of Chinese.

Anti-tumor Activity of Paclitaxel Prodrug Conjugated with Polyethylene Glycol

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a method for increasing the solubility of paclitaxel in water to reduce its toxicity and make the drug more feasible for chemotherapy. A series of highly water soluble paclitaxel polyethylene glycol (PEG) esters were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-tumor activity and toxicity. The solubility of 7-polyethylene glycol paclitaxel carbonate 5 was 840 mg/mL and the acute toxicity ($LD_{50}$) was 286 mg/kg. Because of its reduced toxicity, compound 5 showed a dramatic reduction of tumor volume without any loss of animals in long-term treatment (daily consecutive injections for 15 days).
