  • [ $V_2O_5$ ]doped Karrooite pigments were synthesized by the solid state method to get stabilized brown pigment in oxidation and reduction atmosphere. Optimum substitution condition and limited dopant with $V_2O_5$ for Karrooite pigment was investigated. With calcination at $1250^{\circ}C{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$, compositions were designed varying $V_2O_5$ molar ratio by increasing 0.02mole to the formula $Mg_1-xTi_2-xM_{2x}O_5$(x = 0.01~0.09 mole). Synthesized pigments were analyzed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis. When $V_2O_5$ was doped from 0.01 to 0.05 mole, single phase of Karrooite was observed at temperature $1300^{\circ}C$ and soaking time 4h by Raman spectroscopy. However, it was found that excess $VO_2$ peak appeared with 0.07 and 0.09 mole of $V_2O_5$ doped to $MgTi_2O_5$. This result indicated that the maximum limit of solid solution is 0.05 mole $V_2O_5$. Karrooite pigments were applied as a ceramic pigment to achieve brown colors in lime magnesia glaze and lime barium graze at both of oxidation and reduction atmosphere. CIE color coordinates are $L^*$ = 40.34, $a^*$ = 9.94, $b^*$ = 21.40 in lime magnesia glaze.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of calcium supplementation on the reduction of blood pressure in normotensive young adults. Fortyseven healthy college students(23 male and 24 female) were divided into Ca and placebo groups, and were orally given with calcium(1g/day, 2.5g as CaCO3) and placebo, respectively, for 20 weeks. Blood pressure was measured by Korotokoff method in seated position every two weeks. Average daily dietary calcium intakes of the subjects were 626-643mg in men and 513-552mg in women. Average initial level of serum calcium of the subjects belonged to normal range. 1. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure(SBP and DBP) of Ca group showed significant continuously decreasing tendency from 6-8 weeks until final 20 weeks of the supplementation in both men and women. But placebo groups did not. Comparing with the basal value, reduction of SBP and DBP after 20 weeks were 6.53$\pm$4.30%(8.9mmHg) and 8.10$\pm$3.30%(7.4mmHg) in men, and 6.56$\pm$2.41%(8.1mmHg) and 7.33$\pm$3.75%(6.2mmHg) in women. The blood pressure lowering effect of calcium supplementation seemed to be greater in the subjects with higher basal SBP. 2. Serum calcium was significantly increased by calcium supplementation in both men and women, and showed significant negative correlation with SBP(r=-.213) and DBP(r=-.301) in women. Serum Ca/Mg ratio of Ca group was also elevated and showed significant negative correlation with SBP(r=-.174) and DBP(r=-.194) in total subjects. 3. Urinary excretion of Na did not show any significant changes by calcium supplementation in both men and women and showed no correlations with blood pressures.

  • Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been a serious environmental issue that threatens soil and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, an acid-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacterium, strain S4, was isolated from the mud of an AMD storage pond in Vietnam via enrichment in anoxic mineral medium at pH 5. Comparative analyses of sequences of the 16S rRNA gene and dsrB gene involved in sulfate reduction revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Desulfovibrio, and is most closely related to Desulfovibrio oxamicus (with 99% homology in 16S rDNA sequence and 98% homology in dsrB gene sequence). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analyses of dsrB gene showed that strain S4 represented one of the two most abundant groups developed in the enrichment culture. Notably, strain S4 was capable of reducing sulfate in low pH environments (from 2 and above), and resistance to extremely high concentration of heavy metals (Fe 3,000 mg/l, Zn 100 mg/l, Cu 100 mg/l). In a batch incubation experiment in synthetic AMD with pH 3.5, strain S4 showed strong effects in facilitating growth of a neutrophilic, metal sensitive Desulfovibrio sp. strain SR4H, which was not capable of growing alone in such an environment. Thus, it is postulated that under extreme conditions such as an AMD environment, acid- and metal-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-like strain S4 would facilitate the growth of other widely distributed SRB by starting to reduce sulfate at low pH, thus increasing pH and lowering the metal concentration in the environment. Owing to such unique physiological characteristics, strain S4 shows great potential for application in sustainable remediation of AMD.

  • This study was performed to facilitate development of new food materials by comparing general components, functional components and antioxidant activity of cherry, aronia, and maquiberry. Cherry revealed higher content of water (6.71%), crude protein (4.61%) and crude protein (5.33%) than aronia and maquiberry. Crude fat content of cherry fruits was the lowest at 1.46%. Content of iron per 100 g was 0.96 mg in cherry, significantly higher than other berries. Total phenolic content of cherry, aronia and maquiberry was 31.32~95.05 GAE mg/g. Total flavonoid content in water extract was 2.07 QE mg/g in cherry, compared with aronia and maquiberry. FRAP reduction power of cherry, aronia and maquiberry was $86.94{\sim}331.83TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$. FRAP reduction power ($156.50TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$) of cherry was higher than that of aronia ($121.72TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$) at $95^{\circ}C$ deionized water extract. In the case of water extract, $117.00TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$, and cherry was higher in ABTS radical scavenging ability than aronia ($86.55{\mu}mol/g$). DPPH radical scavenging activity of cherry, aronia and maquiberry was $26.34{\sim}493.53TEAC\;{\mu}mol/g$. DPPH radical scavenging activity was lowest in cherry. In conclusion, in place of foreign expensive aronia and maquiberry, the price of cherry is low and use of cherry widely distributed has increased and is used as a material of functional food.

  • An experiment was conducted with day-old 300 commercial male broiler chicks (Arbor Acres$^{(R)}$) to evaluate the efficacy of crude phytase preparerations produced from a culture of Aspergillus ficcum. The experiment consisted of five dietary treatments; T1, com-soy control diet with 0.45% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) for starter period and 0.35% NPP for grower period; T2, control - 0.1% NPP; T3, control 0.2% NPP; T4, T3+600 U of crude phytase (broth+cell); and T5, T3+600 U of crude phytase (broth). The body weight gain, feed intake, and feed/gain of chickens fed T1 diet was highest (p<0.01) among treatments. BW gain and feed intake of T4 and T5 were greater than those of T3 but were less than those of T1 and T2. T3 was highest in mortality among treatments. Decreasing the NPP level lowered availability of DM, crude ash, ether extract, crude fiber, Zn, and Fe but supplementation of crude phytase preparations improved the availability of these nutrients as well as those of Ca, P and Cu. Excretion of P and Cu significantly decreased as the NPP level in the diet decreased. Further reduction of P and Cu excretion and reduction of Ca, Mg and Fe excretion were achieved by supplementation of crude phytase preparations. The serum concentrations of Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Cu were significantly increased by crude phytase supplementation. The weight and length of tibia, and contents of crude ash, Ca, P, Mg, and Zn were adversely affected by lowering NPP level but partially recovered by supplementation of crude phytase preparations. In conclusion, lowering NPP level in the broiler diet significantly depressed the performance. Supplementation of crude phytase preparations produced from Aspergillus ficuum could partially recover the depression.

  • The decomposition of antibiotics (cefaclor) by gamma irradiation in aqueous solutions was experimentally evaluated. To obtain a mutual interaction between two factors (antibiotics concentrations and radiation doses) and to optimize these factors during the process, experimental design and statistical analysis were employed. The decomposition capability of the gamma radiation was also mathematically described as a function of cefaclor concentration and gamma-ray dose using the statistical analysis. The results showed that the cefaclor concentration ($X_1$) in the response $Y_1$ (Reduction of cefaclor concentration) and gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_2$ (Removal efficiency (%) of cefaclor concentration) exhibited a significantly positive effect, whereas gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_1$ showed a significantly negative effect. The estimated ridge of maximum responses and optimal conditions for $Y_1$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(25 mg/L, 350 Gy) and $Y_2$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(21 mg/L, 565 Gy) using canonical analysis were 4.37 mg/L of reduction of cefaclor concentration and 98.35% of removal efficiency of cefaclor concentration, respectively. The measurement values agreed well with the predicted ones, thereby confirming the suitability of the model for $Y_1$ and $Y_2$ and the success of the experimental design in optimizing the conditions of the gamma irradiation process.

  • Acid effects on the ICP-AES signals are studied as the concentrations of nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and 1:1 mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid are changed. Almost all analyte signals are depressed. The extent of the depression due to the pressence of the acids became to be pecular when the acid concentration was over 1%. Among the acids used, the suppression due to sulfuric acid is most severe and unexpectable. The ratios of the analyte signal to Ar signal and the Mg II signal to Mg I signal are measured as the concentration of the acids changed. In this study, it is proved that the main reason of the signal reduction is the change in the nebulization efficiency, for example, droplet size distribution, viscosity and surface tension variation, not the alteration of plasma excitation characteristics. There was no relationship found between ionization potential and analyte signal reduction in ICP-MS.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the applicability of a stable anaerobic digester using a separator membrane to the preprocessing thickening process. The results of the experiments showed about a 47.16% weight loss rate for the sludge under anaerobic condition, and about 41.17% under intermittent aeration condition. The concentrations of rejection water were $SCOD_{Cr}$ 25 mg/L, T-N 16.6 mg/L, and T-P 1.4 mg/L on the average under the intermittent aeration condition, which were lower than the concentrations of rejection water under an anaerobic condition. As for the factors affecting the reduction of the flux, correlation analyses of TTF, MLSS, $SCOD_{Cr}$, and $EPS_{Protein}$, $EPS_{Polysacchride}$ resulted in -0.97, -0.95, -0.84 and -0.86, -0.95, respectively, which showed that TTF had the highest correlation to the reduction of the flux. In addition, it was concluded that MLSS, $SCOD_{Cr}$ and $EPS_{Protein}$, $EPS_{Polysacchride}$ also have close correlations. The results are considered to show that, in the case of the process using a tubular membrane in the preprocessing process of an anaerobic digester, an intermittent aeration condition of the thickener considering the contamination of the membrane and load of rejection water is appropriate for the stable preprocessing process.

  • In the summer season (June~August) during the study period of Lake Doam, average concentrations of major water quality parameters, COD, SS, TN, and TP were 4.0, 16.2, 3.129 and $0.077mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively, and Chl-a was $11.8mg\;m^{-3}$. The result has indicated that Lake Doam was a meso-eutrotrophic lake. Lake Doam data from the summer season (June~August), precipitation from 2001 to 2012, and water quality (COD, SS, TN, TP, Chl-a etc.) of seven years (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2009~2012), were statistically analyzed for long-term trends by Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator methods. The statistical results showed that precipitation, SD, COD, TN, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$ and Chl-a had decreasing trends, and EC, turbidity, SS, TP and DIP had increasing trends. Suspended solids and total phosphorus were directly affected by precipitation. In the case of suspended solids, more aggressive and constructive plans need to be implemented than the current turbidity reduction project to achieve the targeted water quality ($5mg\;L^{-1}$ of SS) in Lake Doam. In particular, we need to specify a project that considers the steep topographic characteristics of high, land farming areas and precipitation conditions of the Lake Doam watershed, which can increase the efficiency of a turbidity reduction project.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effects of low-dose intravenous N-acetylcysteine on the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients undergoing computed tomography (CT). Methods: All patients presenting to our emergency department and undergoing CT with intravenous contrast media between August 2014 and April 2016 were retrospectively enrolled. We included hospitalized patients with renal dysfunction [estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) between 30 and $89mL/min/1.73m^2$]. A 600-mg injection of N-acetylcysteine was given to patients once before and once immediately after CT, depending on the preference of physician. The primary outcome was CIN defined as an increase in creatinine level of ${\geq}25%$ or ${\geq}0.5mg/dL$ from the baseline within 48 to 72 hours after CT. A trained person blindly reviewed all medical records. Results: Of the 1903 admitted patients, CIN occurred in 9.8% of patients who received 1200 mg intravenous N-acetylcysteine (24/244) and 6.8% of patients who did not (113/1659, p=0.090). In a multivariable regression analysis, N-acetylcystine was not relevant to the prevention of CIN (odds ratio=1.42 [95% CI, 0.90-2.26]). Even in the stratified analysis using the propensity score matching, N-acetylcysteine was irrelevant (GFR 30-59: odds ratio=1.06 [95% CI, 0.43-2.60]; GFR 60-89: odds ratio=1.76 [95% CI, 0.75-4.14]). After adjustment, crystalloids were significantly associated with the reduction in CIN compared with dextrose water (odds ratio=0.60 [95% CI, 0.37-0.97]). Conclusion: No effect was found when low-dose intravenous N-acetylcysteine was used to prevent CIN. However, there seems to be an association between crystalloids and reduction in CIN.
