Screening of Workers with Presumed Occupational Methanol Poisoning: The Applicablility of a National Active Occupational Disease Surveillance System

  • Background: Methyl alcohol poisoning in mobile phone-manufacturing factories during 2015-2016 was caused by methyl alcohol use for cleaning in computerized numerical control (CNC) processes. To determine whether there were health complications in other workers involved in similar processes, the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute conducted a survey. Methods: We established a national active surveillance system by collaborating with the Ministry of Employment and Labor and National Health Insurance Service. Employment and national health insurance data were used. Overall, 12,048 employees of major domestic mobile phone companies and CNC process dispatch workers were surveyed from 2016 to 2017. We investigated methyl alcohol poisoning by using the national health insurance data. Questionnaires were used to investigate diseases due to methyl alcohol poisoning. Results: Overall, 24.9% of dispatched workers were employed in at least five companies, and 23.9% of dispatched workers had missing employment insurance history data. The prevalence of blindness including visual impairment, optic neuritis, visual disturbances, and alcohol toxicity in the study participants was higher than that reported in the national health insurance database (0.02%, 0.07%, 0.23%, and 0.03% versus 0.01%, 0.07%, 0.13%, and 0.01%, respectively, in 2015). Moreover, 430 suspicious workers were identified; 415 of these provided an address and phone number, of whom 48 responded (response rate, 11.6%). Among the 48 workers, 10 had diseases at the time of the survey, of whom 3 workers were believed to have diseases related to methyl alcohol exposure. Conclusion: This study revealed that active surveillance data can be used to assess health problems related to methyl alcohol poisoning in CNC processes and dispatch workers.

Growth-promoting effects of alcohol on Korean radish and cabbage (무와 배추의 생장에 미치는 Alcohol의 영향)

  • This study is an evaluation of growth-promoting effects of methyl and ethyl alcohol on Korean radish and cabbage in the soil. In an experiment as College of Education, Seoul National University, Silt loams, which are treated seven times with methyl and ethyl alcohol at rates from 0.5cc. to 2.5cc. per pot, definitely increase growth rate of radish and cabbage seedlings originating from sterilized seeds. A strong, stimulating effect on the growth of radish and cabbage seedlings is produced when a rate of 0.5cc. per pot of alcohol is applied to pot soils. The effect of methyl alcohol is stronger in fresh weight, dry weight, and average height of radish and cabbage than that of ethyl alcohol.

Degradation of Lignin and Cellulose Model Compounds by Chlorine Dioxide

  • In this paper, five lignin model compounds (vanilly alcohol, veratryl alcohol, veratryl methyl carbinol, biseugenol) and three cellulose model compounds (${\alpha}$-D-glucos, methyl-${\beta}$-D-glucopyra-noside, D-cellobiose) were used to study the degradation rates of lignin and cellulose with chlorine dioxide. Biseugenol, which has unsaturated structure on the side chain of aromatic ring, was found to react with chlorine dioxide very quickly and consume large amount of chlorine dioxide. Phenolic structures, represented by veratryl alcohol and apocynol, react with chlorine dioxide much faster than nonphenolic structures represented by veratryl alcohol and veratryl methyl carbinol. The degradations of cellulose models were generally very slight, the corder of reaction rate being ${\alpha}$-D-glucose > D-cellobiose > methyl-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside.

Dispersion Polymerization of Acrylamide in Methanol/Water Media

  • Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in the media of methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ mixtures using hydroxypropyl cellulose and ammonium persulfate as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The effects of concentrations of initiator and steric stabilizer, amount of monomer, polymerization temperature, methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ ratio, and purification of monomer and nitrogen purge on the particle size of the latices and molecular weight of the polymers were investigated. The average particle diameter increased with increasing concentration of initiator, water content in methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ media, and polymerization temperature, but decreased with monomer and stabilizer concentrations. The viscosity average molecular weight increased with increasing concentrations of monomer, steric stabilizer, and water content in dispersion media, but decreased with initiator concentration and polymerization temperature. The PAM polymers prepared with the purified monomer and the nitrogen purging before the reaction showed the highest molecular weight.

Characteristics of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Kochujang Prepared with Commercial Enzyme During Fermentation (효소제를 사용한 개량식고추장의 숙성과정 중 휘발성 향기성분의 특성)

  • Kochujang was prepared for this study with raw material inoculated by commercial enzyme of amylase and protease. Volati1e compounds of Kochujang were analyzed using a purge and trap method during fermentation and identified with GC-MSD. Total 54 kinds of volatile flavor components like 16 kinds of alcohol, 16 kinds of ester, 7 kinds of acid, 4 kinds of aldehyde, 2 kinds of alkane, 1 kind of benzene, 3 kinds of ketone, 1 kind of alkene, 2 kind of amine, 1 kind of phenol, other 1 were found. Total number of volatile flavor detected right after manufacturing were 23 kinds like 3 kinds of alcohol, 6 kinds of ester, 3 kinds of aldehyde. After 30 days storage, total number of volatile flavor went up to 31 kinds with addition of 4 kinds of alcohol, 1 kind of ester. The total number of volatile flavor after 120 days storage were increased to 49 kinds. Volatile flavor compounds detected during the storage period were total 20 kinds like 6 kinds of alcohol such as 2-methyl-1-propanol, ethanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 5 kinds of ester such as ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, 3 kinds of aldehyde such as butanal, acetaldehyde and 6 kinds of others. Even though peak area % of flavor compound varied depends on fermentation period, ethanol, ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethenone, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol were the main compounds that consisted of flavor from Kochujang which was made with enzyme treatment. Ethly acetate showed the highest result in the treatment of right after manufacturing, 3-methyl-1-butanol had up to 90th day and ether were the other days.

Aroma Compounds Produced by the Yeast Hansenula saturnus var. saturnus Isolated from Soil (토양에서 분리한 Hansenula saturnus var. saturnus에 의한 휘발성 방향성분의 생성)

  • A yeast strain producing fruity-floral aroma was isolated from soil and identified as Hansenula saturnus var. saturnus. Glucose was found to be the best carbon source and sodium nitrate or phenylalanine as nitrogen source in terms of the nature and the intensity of the aroma produced by the isolated yeast. Seventeen compounds, mainly esters and alcohols, were identified in the ether-pentane extract of the culture broth by gas chromatography and/or coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Ethyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol and their acetate esters together with ethyl caprylate were the major compounds in the aroma concentrate. Three unusual compounds, dibutyl disulfide, 3-methyl pentanoic acid and methyl pentanoate were also tentatively identified in the culture broth of the isolated yeast.

  • The rates of solvolysis of $cis-[Co(en)_2Cl_2]^+$ complex have been investigated using spectrophotometric method at various pressures up to 1500 bar in several binary-aqueous mixtures(water-methyl alcohol, water-acetone, water-isopropyl alcohol and water-ethylene glycol). The activation volumes obtained from the pressure effect on rate constants were 1.13∼4.44 cm3mole-1 for methyl alcohol, 1.13∼3.59$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for acetone, 0.82∼3.44$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for isopropyl alcohol and 1.13∼2.68cm3mole-1 for ethylene glycol. In case of water-methyl alcohol, in addition to, the rates of solvolysis of this complex were determined in the presence of Fe(Ⅱ) ion and the activation volumes were -0.56∼1.59cm3mole$^{-1}$. The rates of solvolysis of this complex were analyzed by comparing with the results obtained from activation volumes and free energy cycle.

  • Methyl alcohol is one of the basic intermediates in the chemical industry and is also being used as a fuel additive and as a clean burning fuel. In this study, conversion of carbon dioxide to methyl alcohol was investigated using catalytic chemical methods. Ceramic monoliths (M) with $400cell/in^2$ were used as catalyst supports. Monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts were prepared by wash-coat method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by using ICP analysis, TEM images and XRD patterns. The catalytic activity for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methyl alcohol was investigated using a flow-type reactor under various reaction temperature, pressure and contact time. In the preparation of monolith-supported CuO-ZnO catalysts by wash-coat method, proper concentration of precursors solution was 25.7% (w/v). The mixed crystal of CuO and ZnO was well supported on monolith. And it was known that more CuO component may be supported than ZnO component. Conversion of carbon dioxide was increased with increasing reaction temperature, but methyl alcohol selectivity was decreased. Optimum reaction temperature was about $250^{\circ}C$ under 20 atm because of the reverse water gas shift reaction. Maximum yield of methyl alcohol over CuO-ZnO/M catalyst was 5.1 mol% at $250^{\circ}C$ and 20 atm.

Enzymatic Production of Alkyl β-Glucoside Based on Transglycosylation Activity of Celluclast (효소적 당전이 반응을 이용한 Alkyl β-Glucoside의 생산)

  • Alkyl glucosides were synthesized using the transglycosylation reaction of Celluclast, the cellulase from Trichoderma reesei, with cellobiose and various alcohols. Glucose as a by-product of the reaction was removed using the immobilized yeast system. Among the alkyl glucoside products, the acceptor products of methanol and ethanol were confirmed as methyl ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside and ethyl ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside via MALDI-TOF MS and enzymatic analysis. Optimal yields of methyl ${\beta}$-glucoside and ethyl ${\beta}$-glucoside were 65.3% (mol/mol) and 59.0% (mol/mol), respectively, based on cellobiose consumed.

Analysis and Assessment by Thermal Desorption Method of Mixed Organic Solvents Collected on Activated Carbon(AC) and Activated Carbon Fiber(ACF) (AC 및 ACF에 포집된 혼합 유기용제의 열탈착 방법에 따른 분석 및 평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate desorption efficiencies accuracy and precision by $CS_2$ and thermal desorption method for polar and non-polar organic solvents collected on activated carbon(AC), activated carbon fiber(ACF), carbosieve SIII, materials tested were Methyl alcohol, n-Hexane, Benzene, Trichloroethylene, Methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl cellosolve acetate and six different concentration levels of samples were made. The results were as follows ; 1. Accuracy on kind adsorbent and desorption method was low. In case of $CS_2$ desorption solvent, Overall B and Overall CV on AC and ACF were 43% and 6.63%, respectively. In case of thermal desorption method, accuracy of thermal desorption method appeared higher than solvent desorption method by AC 18.0%, 3.54%, ACF 2.6%, 2.57%, Carbosieve SIII 13.7% and 1.97%, respectively. 2. In the concentration level III, accuracy of thermal desorption method on adsorbent was in order as follow ; ACF > Carbosieve SIII > AC in the methyl alcohol and Carbosieve SIII > ACF > AC in the rest of them all subject material and Concentration levels showed good precision at EPA recommend standard (${\leq}{\;}30%$) 3. DEs by type of organic solvent adsorbent and desorption method are as follows ; In the case that desorption solvent is $CS_2$, DE of Methyl alcohol is AC 47.5%, DE of all materials is ACF about 50%. In the case of thermal desorption method, DE of Methyl alcohol is AC 82.0%, ACF 97.4%, Carbosieve SIII 86.3%. DE of the later case is prominently improved more than one of former. In particular, Except that DE of EGMEA is ACF 88.5%, DE of the rest of it is more than 95% which is recommend standard MDHS 72. With the result of this study, in order to measure various organic solvent occurring from the working environment, in the case of thermal desorption method, we can get the accurate exposure assessment, reduce the cost, and use ACF as thermal desorption sorbent which available with easy.
