Background: Ginseng is known to have antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. The present study investigated a possible role of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) in suppressing dopaminergic neuronal cell death and the cleavage of p35 to p25 in the substantia nigra (SN) and striatum (ST) using a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease mouse model. Methods: Ten-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were injected intraperitoneally with 30 mg/kg of MPTP at 24-h intervals for 5 d, and then administered KRG (1 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, or 100 mg/kg) once a day for 12 consecutive days from the first injection. Pole tests were performed to assess the motor function of the mice, dopaminergic neuronal survival in the SN and ST was evaluated using tyrosine hydroxylase-immunohistochemistry, and the expressions of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5), p35, and p25 in the SN and ST were measured using Western blotting. Results: MPTP administration caused behavioral impairment, dopaminergic neuronal death, increased Cdk5 and p25 expression, and decreased p35 expression in the nigrostriatal system of mice, whereas KRG dose-dependently alleviated these MPTP-induced changes. Conclusion: These results indicate that KRG can inhibit MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuronal death and suppress the cleavage of p35 to p25 in the SN and the ST, suggesting a possible role for KRG in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
This study focused on typing of the extended-spectrum $\beta$-lactamase (ESBL) produced in organisms isolated from a natural environment, rather than a clinical setting. Samples were collected from drain water issuing from a sewage plant in Kwanganri (Busan, Korea). Following double disk synergy testing, 29 strains were selected as potential ESBL positive strains. Of these, 15 strains were transconjugants of the sodium azide resistant recipient strain Escherichia coli J53 and analyzed biochemically including indole, methyl-red, Voges-Proskauer, Simmon's citrate, decarboxylase-dihydrolase and sugar-fermentation tests. The tests classified the 15 strains as Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=13) and Escherichia coli (n=2). The type of ESBL from each strain was deduced by isoelectric focusing point analysis and DNA sequencing. The results indicated that the types of ESBL were SHV-12 (n=4) and SHV-12/TEM-1 (n=9) from K. pneumoniae and TEM-1 (n=2) from E. coli strains.

The antimutagenic effect of green-ye1low vegetables on the mutagenicities induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in Salmonella assay system and also their inhibitory effect on AZ-521 human gastric cancer cells were studied. Twenty-four items from twenty six kinds of vegetables(92%) revealed antimutagenic activity toward MNNG (p< 0.0l, 0.05). Perilla leaf, Korean cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, mustard leaf, water dropwort, small water dropwort, carrot and burdock inhibited the mutagenicity more than 80%. The methanol extracts of the vegetables also showed the antimutagenic activity toward NDMA (p< 0.01, 0.05). Especially, perilla leaf, kale, soybean sprout and onion inhibited more than 80% of the NDMA induced mutagenicity in S. typhimurium TA100. Small water dropwort and perilla leaf exhibited the strong inhibitory effect (97~100%) on the growth of the AZ-521 human gastric cancer cells. Soybean sprout, water dropwort, broccoli, crown daisy, green red pepper, red pepper leaves, spinach, cabbage and sweet potato also inhibited growth of the cancer cells (p < 0.001~0.05).
Methyl Bromide that was used as fumigation gas turned out to be the substance of destroying the ozone layer. For that reason, at the Montreal Protocol in 1987 the use of methyl bromide was forbidden starting 2005 in the advanced country. Also according to the 2007 Bali Protocolly methyl bromide is expected to be forbidden and therefore the purpose of this study is to find out the effects of substitution fumigation gas (Ethylene Oxide+HFC 134a, Methyl Iodide, Cyanogen and Argon) on the metal(silver, copper and iron), wood(oregon pine), pigment(yellow, red, blue, white and black), textile(hemp, ramie, jute, silk1 and silk2 / indigo, safflower and cork) and paper. After the fumigation test, ethylene oxide+HFC 134a did not have changes in the weight and color of the material itself before and after the experiment. On exterior alteration, color change occurred partly on paper and metal. Also, in most materials color change extent was 0.5 to 1.5 on the average and showed scanty difference. The materials after the fumigation test with methyl iodide did not show weight changes after the test. However, color changes more than 1.0 was shown in most of the materials especially in dyed textile material. In blue pigment, the discoloration on the surface could be seen by naked eyes. Fumigation test with cyanogen gas did not show weight changes and discoloration is more than 1.5 before and after the test. The weight changes of test materials with the argon gas was decreased about 3 to 6%. It can be observed that discoloration on paper was generated. Color changes can be seen on jute dyed with safflower and cork for two weeks with argon gas and the extent was 6.3 and 6.0.
Pyropheophorbide and pheophorbide-photosensitizers as chlorin analogues are promising new compounds for PDT because the chlorin analogues are activated with much longer red light at > 670nm and produce less long-term normal tissue phototoxicity than Photofrin. The various chlorin derivatives can be obtained by moditying peripheral substituted group among which meso-H, vinyl group and exocyclic ring are the most active positions. These characteristics prompted us to introduce various groups for constructing modified pyropheophorbide and pheophorbide a compounds. A stereospecific introduction of various double bonds at 3-position was performed to methylpheophorbide a to give a long hydrophobic moiety and cyclic derivatives. Chlorin-C$_{60}$ dyad and chlorin- $C_{60}$-porphyrin triad also were easily prepared by the reaction of terminal aldehyde of methyl pyropheophorbide a. For the reaction on meso $\delta$-position bromination and Vismeier formylation can occur. N,N-dimethylaminoacrolein also reacted on $\delta$-position and was cyclized to isobacteriochlorin, but other modification has not been succeeded. Exocyclic keto function was also modified to give purpurin derivatives, bicyclic and spiro compounds. In this presentation we report a series of modified pyropheophorbide and pheophorbide a derivatives.s.
This study covers the stages of testing whether the azo dye with chemical name (E)-5-[(4-(benzyl(methyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl]-1,4-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium zinc (II) chloride (DMT), known as Maxilon Red GRL in the dye industry, can be used as an anticorrosive feasible inhibitory agent, especially in industrial areas other than carpet, yarn and fibre dyeing. These test stages consist of the electrochemical measurement techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) for diverse concentrations and durations. The adsorption of the viewed DMT molecule on the mild steel surface obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. The zero charge potential (PZC) of mild steel was also found to assess the inhibition mechanism in containing DMT solution. The inhibition performance of DMT on the mild steel in a 1.0 M HCl solution was also investigated using methods such as metal microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).
Nitric oxide, a physiological transmitter, is reported to mediate cellular injury in various tissues. Its reactivity to free radical is believed to be one of the reasons for its involvement in cytotoxicity. Menadione, a representative quinone, is cytotoxic to several cell systems including isolated hepatocyte, endothelial cell and red blood cells. Its toxic mechanism is related to oxidative stress, mediated by toxic free radicals. Our previous studies demonstrated that menadione induced cell lysis and increase of oxygen consumption in platelets. It has been reported that platelets have nitric oxide producing enzyme, nitric oxide synthase. Thus, we have investigated to manifest the role of nitric oxide.in menadione-induced cytotoxicity in rat platelets. Menadione induced cytotoxicity in platelets was unaffected by $N^G$-nitro-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), selective and competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase. We also invesitgated the role of extracellular nitric oxide in menadione-induced cytotoxicity of platelets by addition with sodium nitroprusside (SNP). SNP did not affect platelet cytotoxicity by menadione. These results suggested that nitric oxide which was generated endogeneously or exogeneously might have a negligible role in menadione-induced cytotoxicity in rat platelets.
A crude alkaloidal fraction from white ginseng (Panax.gilfsertg C.A. Meyer) showed over thirteen Dragendorff positive spots by TLC using eluent of $CHCl_3$/MeOH(10 : 1). TLC pattern of white, red and Sanchii ginseng (P. notoginseng) was mostly not different from each other, but, in American ginseng (P. quinqgtefolium),two spots having Rf 0.71 and 0.68 were not detected. An alkaloid component was isolated from white ginseng and identified as $N_9$-formyl-1-methyl-$\beta$-carboline (mp $174^{\circ}C$, $C_13H_10N_2O$).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transmission spectrum of the set calcium hydroxide dental cement (Dycal, L.D. Caulk Co. Milford, Del.) Cement was prepared for A T R spectra at a low powder-to-liquid ratio of 3.0gm/ml in order to retard the reaction and facilitate the manipulation of loading the cement into the cell. Spectra were recorded on an I R Spectrophotometer (MX-1, FT) at an agle of incidence of 55. The A T R cell was a RIIc Model TR5 with a hemisperical KRS-5 (Thallium-Bromide-Iodide). A spectrum was recorded within 3 minutes. Further spectra were recorded after 5,10,30 minutes and 1,5,24, 72 hours. The results were as follows; 1. The setting reaction between acid paste and base past would take place fastly within 10 minutes after mix, and that would be slow until 72 hours after mix. 2. In the set cements, some methyl salicylate and calcium hydroxide remained unreacted until 72 hours after mix. 3. The setting reaction and the reaction rate occuring at the surface and in the bulk cements were similar. 4. The chelates were bound together between calcium hydroxide and methyl salicylate.
Three different strains of carotenoid accumulating XantlwphyUomyces dendrorhous mutants, JH1, JH2, and JH3, were isolated by NTG (N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) mutagenesis, which might potentially be useful for animal feed as well as for studies on the regulation and biosynthesis of astaxanthin. Mutants were selected based on the capability of growth and carotenoid production on the YM agar plate containing chemical inhibitor, $\beta$-ionone. Astaxanthin-overproducing mutant JH1 produced 4.032 mg astaxanthinlg dry cell weight, and this value was about 15-folds higher than that of wild-type. $\beta$-Carotene-overproducing mutant JH2 produced 0.273 mg $\beta$-carotene/g dry cell weight, and this was 4-folds increase from that of wild-type. In contrast, JH3 was a white-colored mutant that was unable to produce carotenoid pigment.
