Evaluation of required seismic gap between adjacent buildings in relation to the Egyptian Code

  • International seismic codes stipulate that adjacent buildings should be separated by a specified minimum distance, otherwise the pounding effect should be considered in the design. Recent researches proposed an alternative method (Double Difference Combination Rule) to estimate seismic gap between structures, as this method considers the cross relation of adjacent buildings behavior during earthquakes. Four different criteria were used to calculate the minimum separation distance using this method and results are compared to the international codes for five separation cases. These cases used four case study buildings classified by different heights, lateral load resisting systems and fundamental periods of vibrations to assess the consistency in results for the alternative methods. Non-linear analysis was performed to calculate the inelastic displacements of the four buildings, and the results were used to evaluate the relation between elastic and inelastic displacements due to the ductility of structural elements resisting seismic loads. A verification analysis was conducted to guarantee that the separation distance calculated is sufficient to avoid pounding. Results shows that the use of two out of the four studied methods yields separation distances smaller than that calculated by the code specified equations without under-estimating the minimum separation distance required to avoid pounding.

  • In this paper, we propose a vocal and nonvocal separation method which uses a combination of kernel model and LSTM (Long-Short Term Memory) networks. Conventional vocal and nonvocal separation methods estimate the vocal component even in sections where only non-vocal components exist. This causes a problem of the source estimation error. Therefore we combine the existing kernel based separation method with the vocal/nonvocal classification based on LSTM networks in order to overcome the limitation of the existing separation methods. We propose a parallel combined separation algorithm and series combined separation algorithm as combination structures. The experimental results verify that the proposed method achieves better separation performance than the conventional approaches.

Separation of Burnup Monitors in Spent Nuclear Fuel Samples by Liquid Chromatography

  • A coupled column liquid chromatography system was applied for the separation of the burnup monitors in spent nuclear fuel sample solutions. A reversed phase column was studied for the adsorption behavior of uranyl ions using alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid as an eluent and used for the separation of plutonium and uranium. A cation exchange column prepared by coating 1-eicosylsulfate onto the reversed phase column was used for the separation of the lanthanides. In addition, retention of Np was checked with the reversed phase column and cation exchange column, respectively, according to the oxidation states to observe the interference effect for the separation of burnup monitors. This chromatography system showed a great reduction in separation time compared to a conventional anion exchange method. A good agreement from the burnup data was obtained between for this method and a conventional anion exchange method to within 1% of a difference for the spent nuclear fuel samples of about 40 GWD/MTU.

  • As one of the promising model on the multiphase fluid mixtures, the Lattice-Boltzmann Method(LBM) is being developed to simulate flows containing two immisible components which are different mass values. The equilibrium function in the LBM can have a nonideal gas model for the equation of state and use the interfacial energy for the phase separation effect. An example on the phase separation has been carried out through the time evolution. The LBM based on the statistic mechanics is appropriate to solve very complicated flow problems and this model gives comparative merits rather than the continuum mechanics model.

  • In this research, we investigated active vibration control based on wave-viewpoint using the longitudinal wave separation method. The control strategy is the one of active vibration control technique for generating vibration reduced zone and uses wave information including the directivity as the cost function. In order to get the wave information from the measured values, we proposed and examined the time-domain longitudinal wave separation method proper to real time application like active vibration control. Using the proposed method, we examine the performance and feasibility of active vibration control based wave view-point through the simulation. The related experimental verification and application is going to be expected in a near future.

  • This study is concerned with the relation between steelbelt and belt edge separation. Belt edge separation causes tire burst and threatens passenger's safety. For that reason, it is important to predict durability caused by belt edge separation first in tire structure design step. In this study, to predict belt edge separation, we suggest the prediction method of belt edge separation and evaluate the effect of steelbelt width on the belt edge separation using FEM. We study on analysis parameter also to do exact estimation about the shear behaviour of belt edge area.

  • This study introduced waste water treatment method applied superconductor HGMS(High Gradient Magnetic Separation). HGMS method treat high efficient method for various waste water. we have surveyed superconducting magnetic separation technology and reviewed the status of related industries using applied superconductivity. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system. In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS, it was made clear that the fine para-magnetic particles in the rolling colling wasted water obtained from rolling process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.

Automatic Individual Tooth Region Separation using Accurate Tooth Curve Detection for Orthodontic Treatment Planning

  • In this paper, we propose the automatic detection method for individual region separation using panorama image. Finding areas that contain individual teeth is one of the most important tasks in automating 3D models through individual tooth separation. In the conventional method, the maxillary and mandibular teeth regions are separated using a straight line or a specific CT slide, and the tooth regions are separated using a straight line in the vertical direction. In the conventional method, since the teeth are arranged in a curved shape, there is a problem that each tooth region is incorrectly detected in order to generate an accurate tooth region. This is a major obstacle to automating the creation of individual tooth models. In this study, we propose a method to find the correct tooth curve by using the jawbone curve which is very similar to the tooth curve in order to overcome the problem of finding the area containing the existing tooth. We have proposed a new method to accurately set individual tooth regions using the feature that individual teeth are arranged in a direction similar to the normal direction of the tooth alignment curve. In the proposed method, the maxillary and mandibular teeth can be more precisely separated than the conventional method, and the area including the individual teeth can be accurately set. Experiments using real dental CT images demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

  • Pure separation of various leukocytes is required for the assessment of their roles in immunological and phisiological function. In this study, pure separation of monocytes from canine peripheral blood was attempted. At first, mononuclear cells (PBMC) were separated by ficoll-hypaque gradient method and then monocytes were recovered from PBMC suspensions in sucrose gradient Sol. (PBMC-Sucrose), autologous plasma (PBMC-Plasma) and autologous serum (PBMC-Serum) incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. 1. In the separation of PBMC by ficoll-hypaque gradient method in canine blood, higher relative centrifugal force (RCF) was required, as high as more than 1,300xg RCF for 40 minutes, for clear formation of PBMC layer than that in human blood as usually used 400xg RCF for 40 minutes. 2. In monocytes-separation from three PBMC suspensions following PBMC separation, recovery-, purity- and viability-rate of monocytes showed better results in PBMC-Plasma and PBMC-Serum than in PBMC-Sucrose suspension, particulary showing better results from PBMC suspensions performed by centrifugation at 1,500xg RCF for 40 minutes.

Blind Source Separation of Acoustic Signals Based on Multistage Independent Component Analysis

  • We propose a new algorithm for blind source separation (BSS), in which frequency-domain independent component analysis (FDICA) and time-domain ICA (TDICA) are combined to achieve a superior source-separation performance under reverberant conditions. Generally speaking, conventional TDICA fails to separate source signals under heavily reverberant conditions because of the low convergence in the iterative learning of the inverse of the mixing system. On the other hand, the separation performance of conventional FDICA also degrades significantly because the independence assumption of narrow-band signals collapses when the number of subbands increases. In the proposed method, the separated signals of FDICA are regarded as the input signals for TDICA, and we can remove the residual crosstalk components of FDICA by using TDICA. The experimental results obtained under the reverberant condition reveal that the separation performance of the proposed method is superior to that of conventional ICA-based BSS methods.
