  • This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$.

  • The efficiencies of four different solid absorbents were evaluated for the simultaneous solid-phase extraction of six ${\beta}$-blockers from biological sample. Chromosorb 107 using methanol as the eluting solvent gave the highest solid-phase extraction yield. From the breakthrough studies of ${\beta}$-blockers, the excellent sorption and desorption properties of the Chromosorb 107 column were verified. The usefulness of Chromosorb 107/methanol was examined for the simultaneous solid-phase extraction of the ${\beta}$-blockers from serum in the concentration range of 2~8ppm.

  • Russula rosacea, a mycorrhizal fungus, has been used for edible and medicinal purposes. This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and nitric oxide inhibitory effects of the fruiting bodies from R. rosacea extracted with methanol, and hot water. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities of the methanol and hot water extracts (2.0 mg/ml) of R. rosacea were comparable with BHT, the positive control. The chelating effects of the mushroom and hot water extracts were significantly higher than that of BHT. The reducing power of methanol and hot water extract (6 mg/ml) were significantly lower than that of BHT. Seven phenolic compounds were detected from acetonitrile and hydrochloric acid solvent extract of the mushroom. alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities of methanol and hot water extracts were lower than that of acarbose, the positive control. The acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory effects were moderate compared with galanthamine, the standard drug. Nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced RAW 264.7 cells were inhibited significantly by the mushroom extracts in a concentration dependent manner. Therefore, we demonstrated that fruiting bodies of R. rosacea possess in vitro antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and NO production inhibitory activities. The experimental results suggest that the fruiting bodies of R. rosacea are good natural antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and anti-inflammatory sources.

  • Chlorophyll is an abundant pigment found in all green plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. This study uses methanol, acetone and water to extract spinach and mate powders in order to examine the possibility of dyeing animal fibers with chlorophyll without chemical alteration. It was shown that methanol extracts of spinach and mate powders can be effectively used to dye wool and silk fabrics if the extract is mixed with water by methanol:water 65:35 v/v. Compared to methanol extract, the acetone extract showed lower chlorophyll yield and lower dye uptake. Water was not an appropriate solvent for chlorophyll extraction and dyeing. Spinach powder showed a higher dye uptake than mate powder due to the higher chlorophyll content than mate powder. It is possible that the chlorophyll dyeing of wool and silk fabrics is due to the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxy amino acids in fiber and the carbonyl groups of chlorophyll. These carbonyl groups are on the heterocyclic ring and the methyl and ethyl side chains of chlorophyll.

  • This study examined the antioxidant and neuronal cell protective effects of the water and methanol extracts of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. The total polyphenol content was significantly higher in the methanol extract than in the water extract. The DPPH radical scavenging activity in the water extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $100{\sim}200{\mu}g/mL$. The ABTS radical scavenging activity in the water and methanol extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $800{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity in the methanol extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $800{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging and (SOD)-like activity increased with increasing extract concentration. In a cell viability using MTT, the water extract (50 and 100 ppm) and methanol extract (100 ppm) had a protective effect against $H_2O_2$-induced neurotoxicity. The result ssuggest that the extract of E. caryophyllata Thunb. has antioxidant activities and may be useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/sulfur-siccinic acid(SSA) membrane performances have been studied for the vapor permeation separation of methyl tort-butyl ether(MTBE)/methanol mixtures with varying operation temperatures, amount of cross-linking agents, and feed compositions. 1'here are two factors, the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding, in the swelling measurements of PVA/SSA membranes. These two factors act interdependently on the membrane swelling. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The cross-linking effect might be more dominant than the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 7% SSA membrane. Hydrogen bonding effect was more important for 5% SSA membrane. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vapor feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2187 with the flux of 4.84g/$m^2$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 3$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In ordo. to develop the natural food preservative agent, freeze dried dandelion (Taraxcum platycarpum) was extracted with several solvents, and antimicrobial activity was investigated. The methanol extract obtained from the dandelion exhibited antimicrobial properties against five strains such as Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The methanol extract at the concentration of 2000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml completely inhibited the growth of B. subtilis, E. coli, L. monocytogenes and V. parahaemolyticus. Antimicrobial activity of the ethylacetate fraction from the methanol extract of dandelion was the strongest fraction compare to those the other solvent fractions such as n-hexane, chloroform, n-butanol and water. The ethylacetate fraction showed the inhibitory effect at the concentration of 0.5 mg/disc on the growth of the food spoilage microorganisms.

  • The present article describes a novel method of preparing the sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs for DMFC, which are excellent in film quality, proton conductivity, methanol impermeability and mechanical properties. No depression in film quality or difficulty in film preparation is observed, even though sulfonated group of the PEMs are kept as high as 70 mol %. Allyl-terminated cooligo-PESs containing the organic sulfonate groups were solvent-cast into films and then thermally treated for cross-linking. Cross-linked sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs gave unprecedented reduction of methanol cross-over and high ionic conductivity through in-situ thermal polymerization and cross-linking of telechelic sulfonated sulfone oligomers during a membrane preparation.

  • The dissociation constants of dibasic carboxylic acids $(HOOC(CH_2)_nCOOH$, n = 0~4] in methanol, N, N-dimethylformamide and acetonitrile have been determined by the potentiometric method with a glass electrode. The difference between over-all dissociation constants in each other solvent is found to be of the same order of magnitude, and the $K_1/K_2$ ratios in aprotic dimethylformamide and acetonitrile are much greater than those in protic methanol and water.
