  • Propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed, twin edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate ($\sigma$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edge-flames can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Experimental results are presented for premixed methane/air twin flames in terms of the effects of $\sigma$ on $U_{edge}$. Both low-$\sigma$ and high-$\sigma$ extinction limits were discovered for all mixtures tested. As a result, the domain of edge-flame stability was obtained in terms of heat loss factor and normalized flame thickness, and comparison with the numerical result of other researchers was also made. For low ($CH_4/O_2/CO_2$) and high ($C_3H_8$/air) Lewis number cases, propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le.

  • The characteristic of constant volume micro combustor was investigated experimentally. The shape of micro combustor was cylindrical and has row aspect ratio or has relatively large diameter compared with chamber height. Diameter and chamber height was varied to investigate the geometric effect of combustor on the flame propagation. Diameter of 15 mm and 7.5 mm was designed while chamber height was designed to be 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm. The effect of initial pressure was also investigated parametrically from 1bar to 3bar. The gas used in this study was stoichiometric mixture of methane and air. The maximum pressure achieved in down scaled combustors was lower than that of conventional combustor because heat loss to wall was dominant as expected. The maximum pressure responded favorably with the change of height of combustor and the initial pressure, the maximum pressure was also increased. The flame propagation was possible when the specific condition was satisfied. Although the quenching distance of stoichiometric mixture of CH4 and Air is 2.5 mm, the flame could propagate even under quenching distance as the initial pressure increased.

메탄/공기 층류 부분 예혼합화염의 화염구조와 NOx 배출특성;예혼합 인자의 영향 (Flame Structure and NOx Emission Characteristics in Laminar Partially Premixed $CH_4$/Air Flames;Effect of Premixing Degree)

  • In this paper, the study of effects of flow variables on flame structure and NOx emission concentration was performed in co-axial laminar partially premixed methane/air flames. the objectives are to reveal its effect as parameters were varied and to understand the correlation between flame structure and NOx emission characteristics in the reaction zone. equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), fuel split degree(${\sigma}$), and mixing distance(x/D) were defined as a premixing degree and varied within $1.36{\sim}3.17$(equivalence ratio), $50{\sim}100$(fuel split degree), and $5{\sim}20$(mixing distance). the image of $OH{\ast}$ and $CH{\ast}$, and NOx concentration were obtained with an ICCD camera and a NOx analyzer. additionally the maximum intensity location of $OH{\ast}$ chemiluminescence and $CH{\ast}$ chemiluminescence were measured to compare each flame structures. In conclusion flame structure and NOx emission characteristics were changed from diffused to premixed flame when mixing degree was on the increase. the main effect on flame structure and NOx production was at first equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), and next fuel split degree(${\sigma}$), and finally mixing distance(x/D).

The comparison of radial and axial flow porous burners from viewpoint of output radiative heat transfer and emissions

  • In this paper, two types of porous burners with radial and axial flow have been modeled numerically and compared. For this purpose, governing equations were solved one-dimensionally for methane-air premix gas. The mechanism used in simulating combustion phenomenon was 15 stage reduced mechanism based on GRI3.0. In order to compare the two burners, the inlet flow rate and fuel-air ratio have been assumed equal for the two burners. The results of the study indicated that reduction in speed and increase in cross-section area in the direction of flow have a considerable influence on the behavior of radial burner in comparison to axial burner. Regarding temperature distribution inside the burner, it was observed that the two above mentioned factors can be influential in temperature of flame propagation region. Also, regarding distribution of CO and NO emission, the results indicate that the porous radial burner has lower emissions in comparison to the axial once. The output radiative heat transfer efficiency of the two burners was also compared and in this case also even the radial porous burner was found to be preferable.

CARS를 이용한 희박 예혼합 가스터빈 연소기내 온도 측정 (II)-당량비가 위상별 온도에 미치는 영향- (Phase-Resolved CARS Temperature Measurement in a Lean Premixed Gas Turbine Combustor (II) -Effect of Equivalence Ratio on Phase-Resolved Gas Temperature-)

  • The effect of equivalence ratio and fuel/air mixing quality on the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle was experimentally investigated. An atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on methane with heat release rate of 1.59kW was used. Temperature measurements were made using coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) at several spatial locations fur typical unstable combustion conditions. Analysis was conducted using parameters such as phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs). Also the probability on the occurrence of high temperature (over 1900K) was investigated to get the information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio and NOx emission characteristics. It was shown that most of temperature histograms exhibit Gaussian profile which has short breadth of temperature fluctuation at equivalence ratio of 0.6, while beta profile was predominant for the cases of other equivalence ratios (${\Phi}$=0.55, 0.50). It was also shown that phase-resolved averaged temperature oscillated in phase with pressure cycle, while normalized standard deviations which represent temporal turbulent intensity of temperature showed nearly constant value around 0.1. The characteristics on the occurrence of high temperature also displayed periodic wave form which was very similar to the pressure signal. And the amplitude of this profile went larger as the fuel/air mixing quality became poorer. These also provided additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as NOx emission characteristics.

반응 메커니즘 기반의 수소 첨가 바이오가스 HCCI 엔진 성능 및 배출가스에 대한 수치 해석적 연구 (Numerical analysis on performances and emission characteristics of HCCI engine fueled with hydrogen added biogas)

  • 본 연구에서는 바이오가스 기반 예혼합 압축착화(Homogeneous charged compression ignition, HCCI) 엔진에 수소를 첨가하였을 때, 연소실 내부 압력, 온도 배출가스에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보았다. 자세히는 수소 첨가량과 과다공기량(${\lambda}$) 변화에 따른 연소실 압력 온도, 그리고 생성물로서의 NO, $CO_2$ 배출 특성을 화학 반응 해석 프로그램을 사용하여 고찰하였다. 대상의 엔진은 2300cc 바이오가스 엔진 발전기로서 압축비 13:1, 발전량 15kW 급이다. 과급압은 1.2bar 고정 조건이며, rpm은 1800rpm의 정속 조건이다. 엔진 연소 방식은 예혼합 압축 착화를 모사하였다. 본 연구를 진행하기에 앞서 바이오가스의 주요 조성인 메탄의 연소 및 산화 메커니즘에 대한 선행 연구에 대한 고찰을 통하여 연소반응 메커니즘을 규명하기 위한 반응 메커니즘 연구 기술의 경향을 살펴보고, 본 연구에 적용 가능한 반응 메커니즘을 선정하여 해석을 진행하였다. 수소를 첨가할 때 NO는 증가하는 반면, $CO_2$등의 배출량은 감소하였고 실린더 내부 압력이 상승하며, 상승 구간이 진각 됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 희박영역에서 수소 첨가가 가연 한계를 증가시켰다.

메탄 산소 연소에 있어서 화염 소화에 대한 연구 (A Study on Flame Extinction in Oxymethane Combustion)

  • Oxy-methane nonpremixed flames diluted with $CO_2$ were investigated to clarify impact of radiation heat loss and chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on flame extinction. Flame stability maps were presented with functional dependencies of critical diluents mole fraction upon global strain rate at several oxidizer stream temperatures in $CH_4-O_2/N_2$, $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$, and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. The effects of radiation heat loss on the critical diluent mole fractions for flame extinction are not significant even at low strain rate in nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ diffusion flame, whereas those are significant at low strain rate and are negligible at high strain rate (> $200s^{-1}$) in $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. Chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on the flame extinction curves were appreciable in both $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ flames. A scaling analysis based on asymptotic solution of stretched flame extinction was applied. A specific radical index, which could reflect the OH population in main reaction zone via controlling the mixture composition in the oxidizer stream, was identified to quantify the chemical kinetic contribution to flame extinction. A good correlation of predicted extinction limits to those calculated numerically were obtained via the ratio between radical indices and oxidizer Lewis numbers for the target and baseline flames. This offered an effective approach to estimate extinction strain rate of nonpremixed oxy-methane flames permitting air infiltration when the baseline flame was taken to nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ flame.

일반 공기 및 순산소 연소 조건에서 Fuel-NOx 생성 특성의 비교 (Comparison of Fuel-NOx Formation Characteristics in Conventional Air and Oxyfuel Combustion Conditions)

  • 10 %의 암모니아가 첨가된 메탄 연료의 비예혼합 확산화염에서, 산소/이산화탄소 및 산소/질소의 산화제 내에 산소 비율의 변화에 따른 질소산화물($NO_x$)의 생성 특성을 실험 및 수치해석적으로 조사하였다. 동축류 제트 화염의 실험에서, 산소/이산화탄소의 산화제인 경우, 측정된 $NO_x$은 산소 비율의 증가에 따라 약간 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 반면에, 산소/질소의 산화제인 경우, $NO_x$은 0.7의 산소 비율에서 최대로 측정되었으며, 산소 비율에 따라 비단조적인 경향을 보였다. 결과적으로, 암모니아가 첨가된 메탄 화염에서 배출되는 $NO_x$는 일반 공기의 조건보다 순산소 연소 조건의 경우가 더 크게 측정되었다. 한편, 다양한 산화제의 조건에 대하여 $NO_x$ 생성 특성을 분석하기 위해서, 동일한 화학반응 메커니즘을 적용하여 1 차원 및 2 차원의 수치해석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 산소/질소의 산화제에서 2 차원의 수치해석 결과가 실험적으로 측정된 $NO_x$의 배출 특성을 비교적 잘 예측하였다.

합성가스와 공기를 혼합한 예혼합화염의 셀 불안정성에 있어서 탄화수소 계 연료첨가에 대한 효과 (Effects of Hydrocarbon Addition on Cellular Instabilities in Expanding Syngas-Air Spherical Premixed Flames)

  • 본 연구에서는 합성가스-공기 화염의 셀 불안정성에 있어서 탄화수소 연료의 첨가효과를 알아보기 위하여 상온, 고압, 정적상태의 연소실에서 실험을 수행하였다. 층류화염전파속도는 상세반응기구와 전달물성치를 사용하여 계산하였고 이를 실험으로 측정된 값과 비교하였다. 탄화수소 연료가 첨가된 합성가스-공기 화염의 셀 불안정성은 수력학적 불안정성과 확산-열 불안정성의 관점에서 평가되며 희박예혼합 화염에 대해 실험으로부터 측정된 셀불안정성을 유발하는 임계 Peclet 수는 이론적으로 얻어진 값과 비교하였다. 실험결과는 반응혼합물에 탄화수소 계 연료의 첨가량이 증가할수록 화염전파속도는 감소함을 보였다. 합성가스-공기화염에 프로판과 부탄을 첨가하였을 경우 수력학적 불안정성과 확산-열 불안정성이 감소하여 셀 형성은 현저하게 감소하였다. 반면 메탄을 첨가하였을 경우 셀 불안정성이 완화되는 효과는 없었다.

혼합층의 지연효과를 배제한 비정상 대향류 확산 화염의 소화 (The extinction of unsteady counterflow diffusion flame without the retardation effect of a mixing layer)

  • The extinction of unsteady diffusion flame was experimentally studied in an opposing jet counterflow burner using diluted methane. The stabilized flame was perturbed by linearly varying velocity change that was generated by pistons installed on both sides of the air and fuel stream. As the results, the extinction of unsteady flame is dependent not only on the history of unsteadiness, but also on the initial condition. We found that there are several unsteady effects on the flame extinction. First, the extinction strain rates of unsteady cases are extended well beyond steady state extinction limits. Second, as the slope of the strain rate change increases, the unsteady extinction strain rate becomes larger. Third, the extension of unsteady extinction strain rate becomes smaller as the initial strain rate increases. We also found that the extension of the extinction limit mainly results from the unsteady response of the reaction zone because there is no retardation effect of a mixing layer for our experimental condition.
