A three-dimensional photochemical air pollution model considered advection, dispersion, photochemical reactions, and precipitation processes was developed. The calculated results of meteorological observation clearly exhibited geographical effects of Gwangyang Bay, in which land and sea breezes, mount-valley winds and local circular winds occurred. The observed results of daytime NOx concentrations were slightly higher than the calculated NOx concentrations in Yosu industrial complex, Gwangyang iron mill, and container yard. Eventually, the calculated NOx results generally agreed well with the observed ones.

The purpose of this study is to find the variation of sedimentation patterns after Saemangeum reclamation. Residual flow after Saemangeum reclamation was calculated prognostically from the observed water temperature and salinity data in May 1992 by the Marine Development Institute of Gunsan National University and wind data which were obtained from spring 1969 through winter 1977 by the Kunsan Meteorological Observatory. Three dimensional movements of injected particles due to currents, turbulence and sinking velocity are tracked by the Euler-Lagrange method. When suspended sediments with the size of soil grain of 30 ㎛ are injected in the Sinsi drainage sluice, their dispersion range of sediment is around Gogunsan islands. When suspended sediments with the size of soil grain of 200 ㎛ are injected in the Garyeok drainage sluice, their dispersion range of sediment was around the Garyeok drainage sluice and Byeonsan coastal area.

Different physical processes, according to the atmospheric boundary layer types, were used in the Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Unified Model (UM) used by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Therefore, it is important to verify the atmospheric boundary layer types in the numerical model to improve the accuracy of the models performance. In this study, the atmospheric boundary layer types were verified using observational data. To classify the atmospheric boundary layer types, summer intensive observation data from radiosonde, flux observation instruments, Doppler wind Light Detection and Ranging(LIDAR) and ceilometer were used. A total number of 201 observation data points were analyzed over the course 61 days from June 18 to August 17, 2019. The most frequent types of differences between LDAPS and observed data were type 1 in LDAPS and type 2 in observed(each 53 times). And type 3 difference was observed in LDAPS and type 5 and 6 were observed 24 and 15 times, respectively. It was because of the simulation performance of the Cloud Physics such as that associated with the simulation of decoupled stratocumulus and cumulus cloud. Therefore, to improve the numerical model, cloud physics aspects should be considered in the atmospheric boundary layer type classification.
MERRA-2 ozone and atmospheric data are utilized to test the usefulness of reanalysis-based tracer transport analysis for ozone in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). Transport and mixing processes related to the seasonal variation of TTL ozone are examined using the tracer transport equation based on the transformed Eulerian mean, and the results are compared to previously proposed values from model analyses. The analysis shows that the seasonal variability of TTL ozone is mainly determined by two processes: vertical mean transport and horizontal eddy mixing of ozone, with different contributions in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The horizontal eddy mixing process explains the major portion of the seasonal cycle in the northern TTL, while the vertical mean transport dominates in the southern TTL. The Asian summer monsoon likely contributes to this observed difference. The ozone variability and related processes in MERRA-2 reanalysis show qualitatively similar features with satellite- and model-based analyses, and it provides advantages of fine-scale analyses. However, it still shows significant quantitative biases in ozone budget analysis.

The source and transport of the severe Asian dust event (ADE) recently observed in the Korean peninsula were analyzed based on observations (surface weather charts and satellite data) and modeling study (WRF-CMAQ modeling systems). The ADE occurred on 20-21 March 2010 in South Korea with very high $PM_{10}$ concentrations (up to approximately $3,000{\mu}g/m^3$ in Daegu and Jeju). The dominant meteorological conditions affecting the dust outbreak and transport processes were found to be associated with the two synoptic features: (1) strong airflows (i.e., westerlies) induced by a strong pressure gradient resulting from a dense isobar pattern (west-high and east-low) between Tuva Republic and Mongolia and (2) a rapid movement of the strong westerlies merged with airflows generated near Gobi Desert and Inner Mongolia. The merged strong westerlies with a low pressure played a pivotal role in the huge amount of AD and its transport height of 5-8 km. The time and location of dust emissions calculated in the source regions were similar to those observed in the weather charts and satellite image. The ADE simulation mostly showed agreement in the patterns and the concentration levels of modeled dust (including $PM_{10}$) with those of the observations.
To investigate the influence of pollution events on the chemical composition and formation processes of aerosol particles, 24-h integrated size-segregated particulate matter (PM) was collected during the fall season at an urban site of Gwangju, Korea and was used to determine the concentrations of mass, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and ionic species. Furthermore, black carbon (BC) concentrations were observed with an aethalometer. The entire sampling period was classified into four periods, i.e., typical, pollution event I, pollution event II, and an Asian dust event. Stable meteorological conditions (e.g., low wind speed, high surface pressure, and high relative humidity) observed during the two pollution events led to accumulation of aerosol particles and increased formation of secondary organic and inorganic aerosol species, thus causing $PM_{2.5}$ increase. Furthermore, these stable conditions resulted in the predominant condensation or droplet mode size distributions of PM, WSOC, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$. However, difference in the accumulation mode size distributions of secondary water-soluble species between pollution events I and II could be attributed to the difference in transport pathways of air masses from high-pollution regions and the formation processes for the secondary chemical species. The average absorption ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent ($AAE_{370-950}$) for 370-950 nm wavelengths > 1.0 indicates that the BC particles from traffic emissions were likely mixed with light absorbing brown carbon (BrC) from biomass burning (BB) emissions. It was found that light absorption by BrC in the near UV range was affected by both secondary organic aerosol and BB emissions. Overall, the pollution events observed during fall at the study site can be due to the synergy of unfavorable meteorological conditions, enhanced secondary formation, local emissions, and long-range transportation of air masses from upwind polluted areas.
This study was performed to research ozone concentration related to airmass thunderstorm using 12 years meteorological data(1990~2001) at Busan. The occurrence frequency of thunderstorm during 12 years was 156 days(annual mean 13days). The airmass thunderstorm frequency was 14 days, most of those occurrence at summertime(59%). In case August 4, 1996, increase of ozone concentration was simultaneous with the decrease of temperature and increase of relative humidity, In case July 23, 1997, ozone concentration of western site at Busan increased, while its of eastern site decreased as airmass thunderstorm occurred(about 1500LST). It is supposed that these ozone increases are the effect of ozone rich air that is brought down by cumulus downdrafts from height levels where the ozone mixing ratio is larger. Thunderstorms can cause downward transport of ozone from the reservoir layer in the upper troposphere into planeta교 boundary layer(PBL). This complex interaction of source and sink processes can result in large variability fer vertical and horizontal ozone distributions. Thus a variety of meteorological precesses can act to enhance vertical mixing between the earth's surface and the atmospheric in the manner described fer thunderstorm.
A large aperture scintillometer (LAS) was deployed with an optical path length of 2.1 km to estimate turbulent sensible heat flux (${\mathcal{Q}}_H$) over a highly heterogeneous urban area. Scintillation measurements were conducted during cold season in November and December 2013, and the daytime data of 14 days were used in the analysis after quality control processes. The LAS-derived ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ show reasonable temporal variation ranging $20{\sim}160W\;m^{-2}$ in unstable atmospheric conditions, and well compare with the measured net radiation. The LAS footprint analysis suggests that ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ can be relatively high when the newly built-up urban area has high source contribution of the turbulent flux in the study area ('northwesterly winds'). Sensitivity tests show that the LAS-derived ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ are highly sensitive to non-dimensional similarity function for temperature structure function parameter, but relatively less sensitive to surface aerodynamic parameters and meteorological variables (temperature and wind speed). A lower Bowen ratio also has a significant influence on the flux estimation. Overall uncertainty of the estimated daytime ${\mathcal{Q}}_H$ is expected within about 20% at an upper limit for the analysis data. It is also found that stable atmospheric conditions can be poorly determined when the scintillometry technique is applied over the highly heterogeneous urban area.

A monitoring system for atmospheric CFC-12 and CFC-11 has been established at Mt. Kwan-Ak, Seoul National University (SNU) since July, 1991. The concentrations showed quite a large variation ranging from 495 to 37600 pptv (pptv=part per trillion, 10$^{-12}$ , v/v) for CFC-12 and from 233 to 12100 pptv for CFC-11 due to many local sources. However, monthly medians show rather limited ranges ; 553~765 pptv for CFC-12 and 301~431 pptv for CFC-11. Furthermore minimum concentrations could be defined relatively well during the whole period of observation. The regional background concentrations in 1993 near SNU wer estimated as 533 pptv for CFC-12 and 293 pptv for CFC-11. These values are very comparable to global averages in Northern Hemisphere, 523 pptv for CFC-12 and 287 pptv for CFC-11, reflecting the fast atmospheric mixing processes within the hemisphere. Examinations with meteorological parameters such as wind speed and direction suggest the possible measurement-window at SNU, appropriate for regional monitoring. Studies for improving the monitoring capability of the SNU station such as automation of the analysis system along with correlation with other meteorological parameters, are in progress at the present time.

This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuation wind velocity spectrum and turbulence characteristics in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with typhoon wind velocity about 2003 (Maemi) 2010 (Kompasu) 2012 (Tembin). The purpose of this paper is to present spectral analysis for longitudinal component fluctuating velocity. In the processes of analysis, the longitudinal velocity spectrums are compared widely used spectrum models with horizontal wind velocity observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration (KMA) and properties of the atmospheric air for typhoon fluctuating wind data are estimated to parameters with turbulency intensity, shear velocity and roughness length.
