  • Effects of the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase on the metastable pitting as a precursor of stable pitting corrosion and also on the progress of stale pitting of the 25Cr-7Ni-3Mo-0.25N duplex stainless steel were investigated in chloride solution. Electrochemical potential and current noises of the alloy were measured in 10 % ferric chloride solution ($FeCl_3$) with zero resistance ammeter (ZRA), and then analyzed by power spectral density (PSD) and by corrosion admittance ($A_c$) spectrum. With aging at $850^{\circ}C$, the passive film of the alloy was found to get significantly unstable as represented by power spectral density (PSD) and a transition from metastable pitting state to stable one was observed. In the corrosion admittance spectrum, the number of negative $A_c$ corresponding to the state of localized corrosion increased with aging, suggesting that the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase considerably degraded the passive film by depleting Cr and Mo around it at $\alpha/\sigma$ or $\gamma/\sigma$ phase boundaries, thereby leading to the initiation of the pitting corrosion. However, the Cr and Mo at $\alpha/\sigma$ or $\gamma/\sigma$ phase boundaries which were once depleted due to the precipitation of the $\sigma$ phase were partly replenished by the diffusion of Cr and Mo from the surrounding matrix with aging time longer. The initiation of pitting seems to be associated with the precipitation density of the $\sigma$ phase with an effective size needed to induce the sufficient depletion of Cr and Mo around it.

  • The Raney Ni catalyst was fabricated by mechanochemically process(MC process) in the Al-Ni system. Intermetallic compound obtained by mechanical alloying was leached in an alkaline solution. The characteristics of the mechanically alloyed powder and Raney Ni catalyst were analyzed by XRD, ICP-AES and EXAFS. In Al-50wt.%Ni, the metastable intermetallic compound phase close to AlNi phase was obtained by mechanical alloying unlike Al-Ni equilibrium phase diagram. The metastable intermetallic compound was transformed into $Al_3$$Ni_2$phase via the annealing at $750^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of Raney Ni fabricated by MC process was mainly bcc Ni including fcc Ni.

  • The effect of $ZrO_2$ dispersed phase on the mechanical properties in $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system has been studied. There are both metastable tetragonal phase and stable monoclinic phase of $ZrO_2$particles diespersed in Al2O3 matrix at room temperature. Metastable tetragonal $ZrO_2$ changes to the stable monoclinic structure within the stress field of the crack. And microcracks are formed by the expansion of $ZrO_2$during the tetragonal-monoclinic transformation on cooling. Therefore stress-induced phase transformation and inclusion-induced microcracking contribute to the mec-hanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system. Sintered composites containing 10m/o $ZrO_2$ yield KiC values of 6.5MN/$m^{3/2}$ much greater than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ This increase results from microcrack extension and stress-induced phase transformation absor-bing energy by crack propagation. Flexural strength of composites is decreased considerably in comparison with pure $Al_2O_3$ This decrease results from microcrack as a crack former and higher porosity than pure $Al_2O_3$.

  • The intermetallic compound $Ni_3Al$ causes a peritectic reaction at the composition and temperature very close to the eutectic reaction in Ni-Al system. Although the phase diagram accepted for this system by ASM Handbook has the eutectic forming between the $\gamma$ and $\gamma$ phases, directional solidification study has shown that the eutectic occurs between $\beta$ and $\gamma$. This work examines the liquidus region using quenched, directional solidification experiments that preserve the microstructrues formed at the solidification front. It is also shown that under certain composition and growth conditions a metastable eutectic between the $\beta$ and $\gamma$ phases forms in this system. Finding of the metastable eutectic provided an important information to understand the phase equilibria near the $Ni_3Al$ composition.

  • Binary Ti-Al alloys containing 50 to 60 atomic percent aluminum are rapidly solidified by hammer anvil method under an argon atmosphere. Constituent phases in each alloy are identified by X-ray diffractometry and microstructures of the alloys are investigated using a transmission electron microscope. In alloys with aluminum content between 50 and 54 percent, a second phase exists besides TiAl(${\gamma}$); this second phase is identified as $Ti_3Al$(${\alpha}2$). The ${\alpha}2$ phase is observed in two types of morphology. One is as fine lamellar alternating with ${\gamma}$ and the other is as a particle. It is concluded that the existence of a metastable phase with the morphologies stated above should arise from a higher quenching rate attained by the hammer anvil method as compared to the conventional roll or splat-quench method. Implications of the above observation are discussed with respect to the phase relations in the Ti-Al binary system; these implications are still controversial in many respects.

  • The influence of Cu and Ni on the ductile-brittle transition behavior of metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloys with N contents below 0.5 wt.% was investigated in terms of austenite stability and microstructure. All the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloys exhibited a ductile-brittle transition behavior by unusual low-temperature brittle fracture, irrespective of Cu and/or Ni addition, and deformation-induced martensitic transformation occasionally occurred during Charpy impact testing at lower temperatures due to reduced austenite stability resulting from insufficient N content. The formation of deformation-induced martensite substantially increased the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) by deteriorating low-temperature toughness because the martensite was more brittle than the parent austenite phase beyond the energy absorbed during transformation, and its volume fraction was too small. On the other hand, the Cu addition to the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloy increased DBTT because the presence of ${\delta}$-ferrite had a negative effect on low-temperature toughness. However, the combined addition of Cu and Ni to the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloy decreased DBTT, compared to the sole addtion of Ni or Cu. This could be explained by the fact that the combined addition of Cu and Ni largely enhanced austenite stability, and suppressed the formation of deformation-induced martensite and ${\delta}$-ferrite in conjunction with the beneficial effect of Cu which may increase stacking fault energy, so that it allows cross-slip to occur and thus reduces the planarity of the deformation mechanism.

  • Transformation of austenite to martensite during cold rolling has been widely used to strengthen metastable austenitic stainless steel grades. Aging treatment of cold worked metastable austenitic stainless steels, including ${\alpha}'$-martensite phase, results in the further increase of strength, when aging is performed in $200^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of time and temperature on the stress-strain behavior of cold worked austenitic stainless steels. The amount of ${\alpha}'$-martensite during cold working and aging was examined by ferrite scope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). During aging at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, tensile strength dramatically increased by 150MPa. Deformed metastable austenitic steels containing the "body-centered" ${\alpha}'$-martensite are strengthened by the diffusion of interstitial solute atoms during aging at low temperature.

  • The crystallizied Inactions of the two metastable phases in the glasses of plagioclase compositions were estimated by x-ray diffraction method. The orthorhombic metastable phase is easily drystaliized in the composition range of 70 to 80 mol% of albite, whereas the hexagonal metastable phase is mostly crystallized in the anonhite-rich side. For the purpose of refining the orthorhombic metastable structure some single crystal fragments of the composition Na,17ca‥‥All Isi2 nn were separated Som the crystallized glasses. The cell parameters of this crystal are a=8.237(1)A. b=8.644(1)A c=4.818(1)A. The space group of this crystal is Pn,2, Final atomic coordinates give R value of 0.040 and Rw of 0.028 with anisotropic thermal parameters. The position of Na and Ca atoms statistically distributed is splitted in two points with the occupancy of 0.5. The Si and Al atoms are statistically distributed in the six-membered ring of the Immm-type framework.

  • The pure and 6mol% MgO-doped ZrO2 powders were prepared by hot petroleum drying method. The power characterization of homogeneous fine powder was indentified by the method of thermal analysis, BET and electron microscope. The transformation, content of t-ZrO2, crystallite size and apparent strain were measured by X-ray diffraction technique. The prepared powders were transformed in order of amorphouslongrightarrowmetastable cubic ZrO2longrightarrowmetastable tetragonal ZrO2longrightarrowstable monoclinic ZrO2 by a adequate heat treatment. The stabilization of metastable phase can be discussed in terms of energetial concept ; the difference of surface energy and internal strain in particle.
