Fe-Co nanocomposite powders with different composition were prepared by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process and their characterizations were studied by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The particles having the mean size of 5~25 nm consisted of metallic cores and oxide shells. The Co contents and particle size increased with increasing the carrier gas flow rate of Co precursor. The saturation magnetization and coercivity increased with increasing Co content. and the saturation magnetization maximized at the 40 wt.%Co. The Fe-Co nanocomposite powder oxidized at $400^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum coercivity of 1739 Oe.
This study introduces a facile strategy to prepare metal oxide/conducting polymer nanocomposites that may have promising applications in energy storage devices. Ploy aniline/nano wire manganese dioxide (PANI/NwMnO2) was synthesized by cyclic voltammetry on glassy carbon electrode. Morphology and structure of the composite, pure PANI, MnO2 nanowires were fully characterized using XRD and SEM analysis. Electrochemical studies shows excellent synergistic effect between PANI and MnO2 nanowires which results in its capacitance increase and cycle stability against PANI electrode. Specific capacitances of PANI/NwMnO2 and PANI were 456 and 190 F/g respectively. The electrochemical performance of electrodes studied using cyclic voltammetry, Galvanostatic charge/discharge and impedance spectroscopy.
The application of nanomaterials for electrodes of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is introduced. In conventional SOFCs, the operating temperature is higher than 1073 K, and so application of nanomaterials is not suitable because of the high degradation rate that results from sintering, aggregation, or reactions. However, by allowing a decrease of the operating temperature, nanomaterials are attracting much interest. In this review, nanocomposite films with columnar morphology, called double columnar or vertically aligned nanocomposites and prepared by pulsed laser ablation method, are introduced. For anodes, metal nano particles prepared by exsolution from perovskite lattice are also applied. By using dissolution and exsolution into and from the perovskite matrix, performed by changing $P_{O2}$ in the gas phase at each interval, recovery of the power density can be achieved by keeping the metal particle size small. Therefore, it is expected that the application of nanomaterials will become more popular in future SOFC development.

In this paper the intrinsic influence of micron-sized nickel particle reinforcements on microstructure, micro-hardness tensile properties and tensile fracture behavior of nano-alumina particle reinforced magnesium alloy AZ31 composite is presented and discussed. The unreinforced magnesium alloy (AZ31) and the reinforced nanocomposite counterpart (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$/1.5 vol.% Ni] were manufactured by solidification processing followed by hot extrusion. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the nickel particle-reinforced magnesium alloy nano-composite was higher than both the unreinforced magnesium alloy and the unreinforced magnesium alloy nanocomposite (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$). The ultimate tensile strength of the nickel particle reinforced composite was noticeably lower than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy (AZ31). The ductility, quantified by elongation-to-failure, of the reinforced nanocomposite was noticeably higher than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy. Tensile fracture behavior of this novel material was essentially normal to the far-field stress axis and revealed microscopic features reminiscent of the occurrence of locally ductile failure mechanisms at the fine microscopic level.
In this study, nanofiber-based textile sensors were developed for motion detection and monitoring. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers containing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and silver nanowires (AgNW) were fabricated using electrospinning. PVDF was chosen as a piezoelectric polymer, zinc oxide as a piezoelectric ceramic, and AgNW as a metal to improve electric conductivity. The PVDF/ZnO/AgNW nanocomposite fibers were used to develop a textile sensor, which was then incorporated into an elbow band to develop a wearable smart band. Changes in the output voltage and peak-to-peak voltage (Vp-p) generated by the joint's flexion and extension were investigated using a dummy elbow. The β-phase crystallinity of pure PVDF nanofibers was 58% when analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; however, the β-phase crystallinity increased to 70% in PVDF nanofibers containing ZnO and to 78% in PVDF nanocomposite fibers containing both ZnO and AgNW. The textile sensor's output voltage values varied with joint-bending angle; upon increasing the joint angle from 45° to 90° to 150°, the Vp-p value increased from 0.321 Vp-p to 0.542 Vp-p to 0.660 Vp-p respectively. This suggests that the textile sensor can be used to detect and monitor body movements.
Ni-ceria cermets have been extensively investigated as candidates for the anode in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. We have used the citric method to synthesize nanocomposite powders consisting of NiO (Ni metal content: $40{\sim}60%$ by volume) highly dispersed in $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$ (CGO). The microstructure characteristics and sintering behaviors of the nanocomposites were investigated. No impurity phases were observed and the shrinkage of these substrates matched well with that of a CGO electrolyte with a specific surface area of $11\;m^2/g$. Densification of the CGO electrolyte layer to $<5\;{\mu}m$ thickness was achieved by co-firing the laminated electrolyte with the porous NiO-CGO substrate at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 6 h.
Polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/metal oxide(MO) nanocomposite mats with a thickness of 0.12 mm were electrospun by adding 0 to 10 wt% of MO nanoparticles ($Fe_2O_3$, ZnO, $SnO_2$, $Sb_2O_3-SnO_2$) into PAN. Pt electrode was patterned on $Al_2O_3$ substrate by DC sputtering and then the PAN(/MO) mats on the Pt patterned $Al_2O_3$ were electrically wired to investigate the $CO_2$ gas sensing properties. As the MO content rose, the fiber diameter decreased due to the presence of lumps caused by the presence of MOs in the fiber. The PAN/2% ZnO mat revealed a faster response time of 93 s and a relatively short recovery of 54 s with a ${\Delta}R$ of 0.031 M${\Omega}$ at a $CO_2$ concentration of 200 ppm. The difference in sensitivity was not observed significantly for the PAN/MO fiber mats in the $CO_2$ concentration range of 100 to 500 ppm. It can be concluded that an appropriate amount of MO nanoparticles in the PAN backbone leads to improvement of the $CO_2$ gas sensing properties.
Recently, it has been found that mechanical alloying (MA) facilitates the nanocomposites formation of metal-metal oxide systems through solid-state reduction during ball milling. In this work, we studied the MA effect of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$-M (M = Al, Ti) systems, where pure metals are used as reducing agents. It is found that composite powders in which $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ and TiO$_{2}$ are dispersed in $\alpha$-Fe matrix with nano-sized grains are obtained by mechanical alloying of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ with Al and Ti for 25 and 75 hours, respectively. It is suggested that the large negative heat associated with the chemical reduction of magnetite by aluminum is responsible for the shorter MA time for composite powder formation in Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$-Al system. X-ray diffraction results show that the reduction of magnetite by Al and Ti if a relatively simple reaction, involving one intermediate phase of FeAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$ or Fe$_{3}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{10}$. The average grain size of $\alpha$-Fe in Fe-TiO$_{2}$ composite powders is in the range of 30 nm. From magnetic measurement, we can also obtain indirect information about the details of the solid-state reduction process during MA.

The effects of electric field frequency on the ac electrical treeing phenomena in an epoxy/reactive diluent/layered silicate (1.5 wt%) were carried out, in needle-plate electrode arrangement. A layered silicate was exfoliated in an epoxy base resin, by using our ac electric field apparatus. To measure the treeing propagation rate, constant alternating current (AC) of 10 kV with three different electric field frequencies (60, 500 and 1,000 Hz) was applied to the specimen, in needle-plate electrode arrangement, at $30^{\circ}C$ of insulating oil bath. As the electric field frequency increased, the treeing propagation rate increased. At 500 Hz, the treeing propagation rate of the epoxy/PG/nanosilicate system was $0.41{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, which was 3.4 times slower than that of the epoxy/PG system. The electrical treeing morphology was dense bush type at 60 Hz; however, as the frequency increased, the bush type was changed to branch type, having few branches, with very slow propagation rate.
The problems associated with the synthesis, characterization and application of $SnO_2$-Au nanocomposites for the optimization of conductometric gas sensors have been discussed in this report. Nanocomposites have been synthesized on the surface of $SnO_2$ films using successive ionic layer deposition(SILD) method. It has been shown that the proposed approach to surface modification of metal oxide films is an excellent method for the optimization of the operating characteristics of $SnO_2$-based gas sensors, being developed for the detection of reducing gases as well as ozone.
