  • The influences of some casting conditions on bonding ratio and state at bonding zone of stainless steel-cast iron dual tube produced by centrifugal casting process were investigated to estimate fabrication technics. 1) Bonding ratio is increasing such as increasing of inner surface temperature of outer metal(stainless steel STS 304), if pouring temperature of inner metal (cast iron) is constant. 2) The more pouring temperature of inner metal (cast iron) increase, the more bonding ratio increase when inner surface temperature of outer metal (cast iron) is constant. 3) As the mold rotary speed is increase, the hatching area of bonding map (perfect bonding area) goes down to the low pouring temperature of inner metal. 4) In order to predict bonding state of two different metal, we are able to make and use the bonding map about casting conditions such as inner surface temperature of outer metal, pouring temperature of inner metal and mold rotary speed.

  • The characteristics of evaporation cooling of single droplet on a heated surface were studied experimentally. The two kinds of heater modules were tested to measure cooling characteristics of metal surface (high conductivity) and Teflon surface (low-energy surface, low conductivity). The results showed that time averaged heat flux during droplet evaporation increased exponentially with initial surface temperatures of brass, copper and steel. The heat flux and evaporation time did not varied with metal conductivities. However, the temperature drop after the deposition of droplet was larger on Teflon than on the metals. Thus, the correlation of interface temperature between liquid droplet and metal surface was proposed as a function of the initial surface temperature of heating materials, which could be applied to both metal and non-metal ones.

  • For use of the thermal cycle of the biochemical fluid sample, the isothermal temperature source with a large surface area was designed, fabricated and its thermal characterization was experimentally evaluated. The comprehensive overview of the technology trend on the temperature control devices was detailed. The large surface area isothermal temperature source was realized by using the vapor chamber heat spreader. The cost-effectiveness and simple manufacturing process were achieved by using the metal-etched wick structure. The temperature distribution was quantitatively investigated by using IR temperature imaging system at equivalent temperatures to the PCR thermal cycle. The standard deviation was measured to be within 0.7$^{\circ}C$ for each temperature cycle. This concludes that the presented isothermal temperature source enables no temperature gradient inside bio-sample fluid. Furthermore it can be applied to the cooling of the electronic devices due to its slimness and low thermal spreading resistance.

  • The relation between surface emissivity and temperature distribution is experimentally and analytically investigated for a conduction-cooled metal plate in vacuum. Experimental set-up consists of a rectangular metal plate placed vertically in a cryostat and thermally anchored to the coldhead of a GM cryocooler at the top. Temperature is measured at a number of locations over the plate with platinum resistors mounted on the plate. A parallel analysis on the balance of heat conduction through the plate and thermal radiation on its surface is performed to numerically calculate the temperature distribution having the same boundary conditions as experiment. By comparing the two results, an average emissivity of the plate is roughly estimated for different metal plates and different surface conditions. The estimated emissivity in present study is less than the listed values for highly polished stainless steel, and meets a fairly good agreement for oxidized copper surface.

  • The effect of coating temperature with regard to surface properties of TiN-coated layer on hard metal(WC-Co) are experimentally investigated. Hardness, surface roughness, TiN coating thickness and adsorption force were measured in order to evaluate the effect of coating temperature. The two-way ANOVA method is used in order to evaluate the experimental data. In AIP processing, It is concluded that the furnace temperature in the range of $400^{\circ}C\~500^{\circ}C$ affected to a little increasing the number of production with the coating temperature.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the change of metal-mold reaction and surface roughness in titanium casting specimens for phosphate-silica alumina bonded investment with mold temperatures. Methods: The metal-phosphate silica alumina bonded mold interface reaction and surface roughness of titanium casting specimens according to mold temperatures were investigated. The Specimens were analysed by scanning electron microscopy and surface roughness tester. Results: The oxidation behavior indicated by the growth of oxide thickness. The titanium-oxide layer were consisted two layer of a porous external and a dense internal one. The reaction layer and surface roughness increased with increasing investment material temperature. Conclusion: In this work, The most suitable mold temperature in casting of pure titanium was $200^{\circ}C$.

  • The barrier height is found to increase from 0.25 to 0.690 eV for Schottky contacts on n-InGaAs using deposition of Ag on a substrate cooled to 77K(LT). Surface analysis leads to an interface model for the LT diode in which there are oxide compounds of In:O and As:O between the metal and semiconductor, leading to behavior as a metal-insulator-semiconductor diode. The metal film deposited t LT has a finer and more uniform structure, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and in situ metal layer resistance measurement. This increased uniformity is an additional reason for the barrier height improvement. In contrast, the diodes formed at room temperature exhibit poorer performance due to an unpassivated surface and non-uniform metal coverage on a microscopic level.

  • Metal surface temperatures around the combustion chamber in a gasoline engine directly affect thermal durability and performance of the engine. Metal surface temperatures are influenced by many cooling factors such as drilled water passage, deflector, combustion chamber wall thickness, pillar, and coolant flow pattern. The object of this study is to learn how the coolant passages and coolant flow pattern in an engine influence to the engine metal surface temperature at engine full load and speed. From the test result, it is suggested a plan to reinforce the engine stiffness and to reduce the thermal stress simultaneously. Also, approaches are introduced to reduce the thermal load on the engine by adjusting the discharging direction from the water pump and by optimizing the water transfer holes in the cylinder head gasket. These methods and the optimized engine cooling system, which were suggested in this paper, were adapted for an engine in progress to eliminate the exhaust valve seat wear.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials fur many high temperature application. However, among the various high temperature environments in which metal matrix composites was applied, thermal shock is known to cause significant degradation in most MMC system. Due to the appreciable difference in coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) between reinforcement and metal matrix, internal stresses are generated following temperature changes. Infernal stresses affect degradation of mechanical properties of MMC by causing microscopic damage in interface and matrix during thermal cycling. Therefore, the nondestructive evaluation on thermal shock damage behavior of SiC/A16061 composite has been carried out using ultrasonics. For this study, SiC fiber reinforced metal matrix composite specimens fabricated by a squeeze casting technique were thermally cycled in the temperature range 298$\~$673 K up to 1000cyc1es. Three point bending test was conducted to investigate the efffct of thermal shock damage on mechanical properties. The relationship between thermal shock damage behavior and the propagation characteristics of surface wave and SH-ultrasonic wave was discussed by considering the result of SEM observation of fracture surface.
