The forest soils of 92 sites in Korea were analyzed to survey heavy metal background levels using aqua regia digestion method and 0.1N HCl extraction method. From these results, the average natural contents of heavy metals were Cd 0.287, Cu 15.26, Pb 18.43, Cr 25.36, Zn 54.27, Ni 17.68mg/kg for aqua regia method, and Cd 0.040, Cu 0.48, Pb 3.06, Cr 0.09, Zn 1.54, Ni 0.27mg/kg for 0.1N HCl extraction method. The range of correlation coefficients between heavy metal contents obtained from two methods(aqua regia and 0.1N HCl) was significant as $0.24{\sim}0.88$, and the correlation coefficients were decreased in order of Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn.
The hydrogenation of $AlB_2$-type BaGaGe exhibits a metal to insulator (MI) transition, inducing a puckering distortion of the original hexagonal [GaGe] layers. We investigate the electronic structure changes associated with the hydrogen-induced MI transition, using extended H$\ddot{u}$ckel tight-binding band calculations. The results indicate that hydrogen incorporation in the precursor BaGaGe is characterized by an antibonding interaction of $\pi$ on GaGe with hydrogen 1s and the second-order mixing of the singly occupied antibonding $\pi^*$ orbital into it, through Ga-H bond formation. As a result, the fully occupied bonding $\pi$ band in BaGaGe changes to a weakly dispersive band with Ge pz (lone pair) character in the hydride, which becomes located just below the Fermi level. The Ga-Ge bonds within a layered polyanion are slightly weakened by hydrogen incorporation. A rationale for this is given.
This study was conducted to evaluate the heavy metal contamination in the soils of Maehyang-ri inland shooting range area. The texture of the Maehyang-ri inland shooting range soil was sandy. Extraction of heavy metals reached quasi-equilibrium within 6 hours using shaking with 0.1 N HCl. 95% and 94% of extraction efficiency was observed for Cu and Pb in the Maehyang-ri shooting range soils, respectively. And Cu and Pb contamination of level of the T-1 region soil was $114.4{\pm}5.7mg/kg$ and $362.3{\pm}20.5mg/kg$. This may be due to the effects of mineralogical factor, soil particle size and un-residual fractions such as exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide and organic+sulfide.

The native silicon-oxide (SiOx) layer at the metal/Silicon interface acts as an electrical resistance to the metal contact of devices. Various methods are proposed for removing this layer, such as sputtering before metal contact formation or high temperature annealing. We studied the chemical evolution of the Au/SiOx/Si system during the annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ using a spatially resolved photoelectron emission method. Scanning photoelectron emission microscopy (SPEM) and core level spectra from local area of the sample show the inhomogeneous oxidation and formation of silicide of Au, as well as valence band spectra reveals the role of Au atoms during the dissociation process of SiOx.
A general and universal detection method, which can be used in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and flow injection analysis (FIA) system for the determination of any metal ions complexing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), is demonstrated. Pulsed amperometric detection scheme is applied in a flow-through thin layer electrochemical cell at an Au working electrode. Fluctuation of peak current level at the same flow rate of carrier solution is minimized at this solid working electrode, whereas not at a dropping mercury electrode. Removal of dissolved oxygen can be omitted with this detection method, which is a required step for cathodic detection methods. Also, a group of metal ions can be determined selectively and indirectly with this detection scheme.

Design of current lead for 21T superconducting magnets is presented. The current lead is composed of a normal metal element, conducting the current from room temperature to intermediate temperature, and an HTS element, conducting the current down to liquid helium temperature. The metal element is disengaged from the HTS element without breaking vacuum after excitation. The optimization of the lead is performed to minimize the thermal heat load when carrying operational current with some margin. In order to confirm the feasibility of our new design, the intermediate joint between a normal metal and HTS element is fabricated and the reliability is tested during engage and disengage performance. The effects of vacuum level and performance cycle on the electrical contact resistance are also investigated.
A performance test of the stainless steel based sintered metal filter was conducted on the low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW) vitrification process. The applicability of the metal filter was based on the test results as well. The baseline pressure drop of the metal filter was evaluated similar to the ceramic filter. During the test, when the flow rate of off-gas was $110Nm^{3}/h$, the total baseline pressure drop was shown as $92mmH_{2}O$. The total pressure drop was attributed to the filter media and the residual dust layer and the value of each was $25mmH_{2}O\;and\;67mmH_{2}O$ respectively. The SEM-EDS spectrum and micrograph of the metal filter specimen showed, no corrosion and no physical damage both at the skin membrane and at the support layer. And most of the baseline pressure drop was caused by the deposition of dust on the surface of the membrane. In conclusion, even though the filter exposure time was short at the test, the performance of the stainless steel based metal filter was acceptable for the treatment of LILW vitrification process.

We synthesized new dye sensor based on indole compound. Through the UV-vis absorptions, we analyzed chemosensing properties to explain metal binding properties. The peak absorptions increased at 472 nm when added metal cations($Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Cr^{3+}$) and gradually decreased the peak at 516 nm. Thus, this UV-Vis absorption behavior clearly showed the metal binding reaction. To measure energy level of used dye sensor, HOMO/LUMO energy value was calculated with cyclovaltagramm(CV) and using computational calculation method, in which we estimated the optimum structure of dye sensor. CV and computational calculation method, both compared to find suitable geometric structure. (with almost same energy values.) From the computational calculation, dye sensor has plane structure. So, Amine and ketone in the dye sensor faced each other and makes position to bind metal cations. In addition, these positions was supported pull-push electron system and generated MLCT process, when the dye sensor was bonded with the metal cations and resulted chemosensing properties. Through the electrochemical and computational calculation method analyze, we proposed the chemosensing principles that the dye sensor bind the metal cation between ketone and amine. Finally, the formation type of metal ion bindings was determined by Job's plot measurements.

Heavy metal pollution of agricultural soils affects land productivity and has impact on the quality of surrounding ecosystem. Soil microbial community parameters are used as reliable indices for assessing quality of agricultural lands under metal stress. This study investigated bacterial community structure of polluted and undisturbed paddy soils to elucidate soil factors that are related to alteration of bacterial communities under conditions of metal pollution. No obvious differences in the richness or diversity of bacterial communities were observed between samples from polluted and control areas. The bacterial communities of three locations were distinct from one another, and each location possessed distinctive set of bacterial phylotypes. The abundances of several phyla and genera differed significantly between study locations. Variation of bacterial community was mostly related to soil general properties at phylum level while at finer taxonomic levels concentrations of arsenic and lead were significant factors. According to results of bacterial community functional prediction, the soil bacterial communities of metal polluted locations were characterized by more abundant DNA replication and repair, translation, transcription and nucleotide metabolism pathway enzymes while amino acid and lipid metabolism as well as xenobiotic biodegradation potential was reduced. Our results suggest that the soil microbial communities had adapted to the elevated metal concentrations in the polluted soils as evidenced by changes in relative abundances of particular groups of microorganisms at different taxonomic resolution levels, and by altered functional potential of the microbial communities.
