Control of food pathogens is critical in food safety field. Norovirus is one of the major causes of gastroenteritis and food poisoning worldwide, however, currently, there is not a vaccine or a specific drug available for its treatment. There are several methods to inactivate norovirus during food processing by chemical and physical treatments, however, the use of natural substance has been suggested as an optional strategy due to their safety and consumer preference. In this study supported by Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea, we identified novel plant-derived substances with significant anti-norovirus activities. The aim of this project was to determine the antiviral activity of a wide range of natural substances, including plant-derived extracts and essential oils, using a norovirus surrogate system, human norovirus replicon-bearing cells, and mouse in vivo experiments. During the activity screening test, we identified novel anti-norovirus substances or oils using plaque assay with MNV-1. Six selected substances were formulated into an optimum mixture and used as an ingredient for salad sauce of which anti-novovirus activity was confirmed(pending for patent and paper submission). The potential application of selected natural substances as a metal surface sanitizer was also tested. Interestingly, the mixture of selected natural compounds showed a significant inhibitory effect against norovirus. These results suggest that these substances may be used as food ingredient with anti-norovirus antivity or components for surface sanitizers to prevent norovirus contamination.
In this study, for a high-pressure turbine (HPT) of 800 MW class supercritical thermal-power plant, considering aerodynamic cross-coupling, we performed a rotordynamic logarithmic decrement (LogDec) stability analysis with various tilting pad journal bearing (TPJB) designs, which several steam turbine OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) currently apply in their supercritical and ultra-supercritical HPTs. We considered the following TPJB designs: 6-Pad load on pad (LOP)/load between pad (LBP), 5-Pad LOP/LBP, Hybrid 3-Pad LOP (lower 3-Pad tilting and upper 1-Pad fixed), and 5-Pad LBPs with the design variables of offset and preload. We used the API Level-I method for a LogDec stability analysis. Following results are summarized only in a standpoint of LogDec stability. The Hybrid 3-Pad LOP TPJBs most excellently outperform all the other TPJBs over nearly a full range of cross-coupled stiffness. In a high range of cross-coupled stiffness, both the 6-Pad LOP and 5-Pad LOP TPJBs may be recommended as a practical conservative bearing design approach for enhancing a rotordynamic stability of the HPT. As expected, in a high range of cross-coupled stiffness, the 6-Pad LBP TPJBs exhibit a better performance than the 5-Pad LBP TPJBs. However, contrary to one's expectation, notably, the 5-Pad LOP TPJBs exhibit a slightly better performance than the 6-Pad LOP TPJBs. Furthermore, we do not recommend any TPJB design efforts of either increasing a pad offset from 0.5 or a pad preload from 0 for the HPT in a standpoint of stability.

Background: A job-exposure matrix (JEM) is an important surrogate indicator to evaluate past exposure levels. Although a Korean asbestos JEM has been constructed previously, this JEM includes only a few industrial and occupational groups. This study aimed to reconstruct the JEM by integrating the latest organized data to improve its utility. Methods: We used recent Korean standard industry and occupation codes and extracted 36 articles from a systematic literature review to initiate the reconstruction of the previous Korean asbestos JEM. The resulting data consisted of 141 combinations of industrial and occupational groups. Data from the Netherlands's JEM were also reviewed and categorized into 70 industrial and 117 occupational groups by matching with the Korean data. We also utilized Germany's data, which consisted of 10 industrial and 14 occupational groups. Results: The reconstructed Korean asbestos JEM had 141 combinations of industries and occupations. The time periods are from the 1980s to the 2000s in 10-year intervals. Most of the data were distributed between the 1990s and the 2000s. Occupations with high exposure to asbestos included knitting and weaving machine operators, automobile mechanics or assemblers, ship mechanics or assemblers, mineral ore and stone products processing mechanics, and metal casting machine operators or mold makers. Conclusions: The reconstructed Korean asbestos JEM has expanded the type and duration of the occupational groups of the previous JEM and can serve as an important reference tool for evaluating asbestos exposure and designing compensation and prevention policies in Korea.

Since the original report on ferroelectricity in Si-doped HfO2 in 2011, fluorite-structured ferroelectrics have attracted increasing interest due to their scalability, established deposition techniques including atomic layer deposition, and compatibility with the complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. Especially, the emerging fluorite-structured ferroelectrics are considered promising for the next-generation semiconductor devices such as storage class memories, memory-logic hybrid devices, and neuromorphic computing devices. For achieving the practical semiconductor devices, understanding polarization switching kinetics in fluorite-structured ferroelectrics is an urgent task. To understand the polarization switching kinetics and domain dynamics in this emerging ferroelectric materials, various classical models such as Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi model, nucleation limited switching model, inhomogeneous field mechanism model, and Du-Chen model have been applied to the fluorite-structured ferroelectrics. However, the polarization switching kinetics of fluorite-structured ferroelectrics are reported to be strongly affected by various nonideal factors such as nanoscale polymorphism, strong effect of defects such as oxygen vacancies and residual impurities, and polycrystallinity with a weak texture. Moreover, some important parameters for polarization switching kinetics and domain dynamics including activation field, domain wall velocity, and switching time distribution have been reported quantitatively different from conventional ferroelectrics such as perovskite-structured ferroelectrics. In this focused review, therefore, the polarization switching kinetics of fluorite-structured ferroelectrics are comprehensively reviewed based on the available literature.

In this paper, we present a block media communication (BMC) system which employs powerline communication to the equipments used in the welding process for ship-assembly and uses metal block as a communication medium. Inductive couplers are installed on digital feeder and pin jig. Information signal is added to the current generated by the welding gun, and applied to the block. When the welding operation starts, information generated in the field is transmitted to the monitoring server in real-time. The field test on the BMC system confirms that the transmitted data are correctly received at the server. Since the proposed system can be built without any changes to the existing welding process, it is helpful to increase competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry through smart factory of shipyards. It is also possible to quickly respond to emergency situations that may occur to workers in an electromagnetic wave shielding environment or a closed space, the effect of preventing industrial accidents will be great.
The status of waste generation and recycling in 32 countries in the European Union (EU), Japan, and the United States was investigated and summarized to encourage overseas market expansion for domestic urban mining industries. Among the 32 EU countries, Germany has the highest amount of material consumption and generates the largest quantity of waste. Minerals such as mine and soil wastes constitute the largest type of waste in the EU. With respect to waste treatment techniques, landfill and recycling are applied to 39% and 38% of the waste, respectively, implying the necessity to promote recycling. Japan's total waste generation declined recently to less than 400 million tons. The largest amount of waste is generated by the manufacturing industries. The proportion of total recycled waste is estimated to be slightly over 50%, but the proportions are greater than 90% for metal scrap and 60% for waste plastics. The amount of waste produced in the United States recently exceeded 265 million tons; 52.1% of the waste is landfilled, while only 25.1% is recycled. Therefore, the recycling industry has to be developed further.

This paper aims to improve the critical speed of power-take-off (PTO) shafts by using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). The PTO shaft was designed with titanium-CFRPs hybrid structure in order to compensate the low shear strength of CFRPs. Based on the requirements for PTO shafts, the dimensions of PTO shafts were determined through a parametric study. To evaluate the performance of the PTO shaft, a vibration test, a static torsion test, and a torsion durability test were performed. In the vibration test, the critical speed of PTO shafts was 20570 rpm, which was 7.5% higher than that of titanium shafts. Additionally, it was confirmed that the maximum allowable torque of the PTO shaft was 2300 N·m. Finally, under repeated load in the range of 11.3 to 113 N·m, the fatigue failure in the PTO shaft did not occur up to 106 cycles.
Protease is a widely used enzyme particularly in the detergent industry. In this research, we aimed to isolate alkaline protease-producing bacteria for characterization as a laundry detergent additive. The screening of alkaline protease production was investigated on basal medium agar plus 1% skim milk at pH 11, with incubation at 30℃. The highest alkaline protease-producing bacterium was 6BS15-4 strain, identified as Bacillus gibsonii by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. While the optimum pH was 12.0, the strain was stable at pH range 7.0-12.0 when incubated at 45℃ for 60 min. The alkaline protease produced by B. gibsonii 6BS15-4 using dairy effluent was characterized. The optimum temperature was 60℃ and the enzyme was stable at 55℃ when incubated at pH 11.0 for 60 min. Metal ions K+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Na+, and Zn2+ exhibited a slightly stimulatory effect on enzyme activity. The enzyme retained over 80% of its activity in the presence of Ca2+, Ba2+, and Mn2+. Thiol reagent and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid did not inhibit the enzyme activity, whereas phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride significantly inhibited the protease activity. The alkaline protease from B. gibsonii 6BS15-4 demonstrated efficiency in blood stain removal and could therefore be used as a detergent additive, with potential for various other industrial applications.
Nanocomposite blade for dicing semiconductor wafer is investigated for micro/nano-device and micro/nano-fabrication. While metal blade has been used for dicing of silicon wafer, polymer composite blades are used for machining of quartz wafer in semiconductor and cellular phone industry in these days. Organic-inorganic material selection is important to provide the blade with machinability, electrical conductivity, strength, ductility and wear resistance. Maintaining constant thickness with micro-dimension during shaping is one of the important technologies fer machining micro/nano fabrication. In this study the fabrication of blade by wet processing of mixing conducting nano ceramic powder, abrasive powder phenol resin and polyimide has been investigated using an experimental approach in which the thickness differential as the primary design criterion. The effect of drying conduction and post pressure are investigated. As a result wet processing techniques reveal that reliable results are achievable with improved dimension tolerance.
This study aimed to evaluate corrosion resistance of steel coated with GI and Zn-Al-Mg alloy using cyclic corrosion test (CCT) with electrochemical polarization and impedance measurements. Results showed that the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel had a much higher corrosion rate than GI coated steel in early stages of corrosion. With prolonged immersion, however, the corrosion rate of the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel greatly decreased, mainly owing to a significant decrease in the cathodic reduction reaction and an increase in polarization resistance at the surface. This was closely associated with the formation of protective corrosion products including Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O and Zn6Al2(OH)16CO3. Moreover, when the steel substrate was locally exposed due to mechanical damage, the kinetics of anodic dissolution from the coating layer and the formation of protective corrosion products on the surface of the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel became much faster compared to the case of GI coated steel. This could provide a longer-lasting corrosion inhibition function for Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel used in plant farms.
