  • As the costs of carbon-footprinetd fuels grow continuously and simultaneously atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration increases, solar fuels are receiving growing attention as alternative clean energy carriers. These fuels include molecular hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide produced from water, and hydrocarbons converted from carbon dioxide. For high efficiency solar fuel production, not only light absorbers (oxide semiconductors, Si, inorganic complexes, etc) should absorb most sunlight, but also charge separation and interfacial charge transfers need to occur efficiently. With this in mind, this talk will introduce the fundamentals of solar fuel production and artificial photosynthesis, and then discuss in detail on photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and CO2 conversion. This talk largely divides into two section: PEC water oxidation and PEC CO2 reduction. The former is very important for proton-coupled electron transfer to CO2. For this oxidation, a variety of oxide semiconductors have been tested including TiO2, ZnO, WO3, BiVO4, and Fe2O3. Although they are essentially capable of oxidizing water into molecular oxygen, the efficiency is very low primarily because of high overpotentials and slow kinetics. This challenge has been overcome by coupling with oxygen evolving catalysts (OECs) and/or doping donor elements. In the latter, surface-modified p-Si electrodes are fabricated to absorb visible light and catalyze the CO2 reduction. For modification, metal nanoparticles are electrodeposited on the p-Si and their PEC performance is compared.

  • Anodic $TiO_2$ nanotubes were simultaneously grown and doped with $RuO_2$ by single-step anodization in a negatively-charged $RuO_4{^-}$ precursor. Subsequently, a high positive voltage was imposed on the nanotubes in an $F^-$-based electrolyte (a process referred to as potential shock), which led to the formation of a through-hole $RuO_2$-doped $TiO_2$ nanotube membrane without significant loss of the $RuO_2$ catalyst. XPS results confirmed that the doped Ru metal was converted into $RuO_2$ as the potential shock voltage increased. Further increases in the potential shock voltage led to the formation of $RuO_x/Ru$ in the $TiO_2$ nanotubes. All of our results clearly showed that a through-hole catalyst-doped $TiO_2$ nanotube membrane can be produced by a sequence consisting of single-step anodization and the potential shock process.

  • This paper presents a simple and inexpensive method to fabricate chemically and mechanically resistant hot electron-emitting composite electrodes on reusable substrates. In this study, the hot electron emitting composite electrodes were manufactured by doping a polymer, nylon 6,6, with few different brands of carbon particles (graphite, carbon black) and by coating metal substrates with the aforementioned composite ink layers with different carbon-polymer mass fractions. The optimal mass fractions in these composite layers allowed to fabricate composite electrodes that can inject hot electrons into aqueous electrolyte solutions and clearly generate hot electron- induced electrochemiluminescence (HECL). An aromatic terbium (III) chelate was used as a probe that is known not to be excited on the basis of traditional electrochemistry but to be efficiently electrically excited in the presence of hydrated electrons and during injection of hot electrons into aqueous solution. Thus, the presence of hot, pre-hydrated or hydrated electrons at the close vicinity of the composite electrode surface were monitored by HECL. The study shows that the extreme pH conditions could not damage the present composite electrodes. These low-cost, simplified and robust composite electrodes thus demonstrate that they can be used in HECL bioaffinity assays and other applications of hot electron electrochemistry.

  • There is evidence that the presence of active pharmaceutical ingredient (APIs) are a danger for aquatic ecosystems and the human health. The presence of APIs such as tetracycline, an antibiotic, in water causes antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microorganisms inflicting enormous costs on individuals and society. Membranes embedded with catalysts such as TiO2 or bismuth based catalysts degrade and separate the organic effluents from wastewater. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts can be enhanced with noble metal doping and addition of carbonaceous materials and formation of heterojunction with other semiconductors. The recollection of photoctalysts is possible through the immobilization of the photocatalysts in polymeric membranes. In this review, the degradation of antibiotics in water is discussed.

  • Y3Al5O2 and Nd: Y3Al5012 single crystals were grown by Czochralskl technique. The effectt of pulling rate rotation rate, and doping level of Nd3+ ion on the crystal quality were studied Various types of defects were analysed by photo-elastic effect and chemical etching method Finally, spectroscopic and laser poputies of grown crystal were measured. Optirmum pulling rate for good quality was dependant on the doping level of Nd3+ ion. It was found that the suitable pulling rates for pure Y3Al5O12 for 3.0∼3.5 a/o Nd3+ ion doped Y3Al5012 and for more than 40 a/o Nd3+ ion doped Y3Al5012 were 2∼4mm/hr, 0.6∼0.5mm/hr, and less than 0.4mm/hr respectively. Solid-liquid interface was convex at the rotation rate of 27∼60rpm, and concave at the rotation rate of 80∼100rpm. Growth axis was confired to <111> direction and lattice parameter was measured to 12.017A. Core (211) facets, striations, inclusions of metal particles, dislocations and optical inhonngeneities were detected. Four level laser transition of Nd3+ion in YIAls012 single crystal were identified by the spectroscopic measurements. Laser rod with tam diameter and 63mm length was fabricated from grown Nd3+ Y3Al5012 sin91e crystals. 1.8lJ of lasing threshould and 0.49% of soope efficiency were measured by the Pulsed laser action.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted much attention as a promising material for transparent conducting films (TCFs), due to their superior electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and complete flexibility as well as their one-dimensional morphological features of extremely high length-to-diameter ratios. This study investigated three kinds of SWCNTs with different purities: as-produced SWCNTs (AP-SWCNTs), thermally purified SWCNTs (TH-SWCNTs), thermally and acid purified SWCNTs (TA-SWCNTs). The purity of each SWCNT sample was assessed by considering absorption peaks in the semiconducting ($S_{22}$) and metallic ($M_{11}$) tubes with UV-Vis NIR spectroscopy and a metal content with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The purity increased as proceeding the purification stages from the AP-SWCNTs through the thermal purification to the acid purification. The samples containing different contents of SWCNTs were dispersed in water using sodium dodecyl benzensulfate (SDBS). Aqueous suspensions of different purities of SWCNTs were prepared to have similar absorbances in UV-Vis absorption measurements so that one can make the TCFs possess similar optical transmittances irrespective of the SWCNT purity. Transparent conductive SWCNT networks were formed by spraying an SWCNT suspension onto a poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) substrate. As expected, the TCFs fabricated with AP-SWCNTs showed very high sheet resistances. Interestingly, the TH-SWCNTs gave lower sheet resistances to the TFCs than the TA-SWCNTs although the latter was of higher purity in the SWCNT content than the former. The TA-SWCNTs would be shortened in length and be more bundled by the acid purification, relative to the TH-SWCNTs. For both purified (TH, TA) samples, the subsequent nitric acid ($HNO_3$) treatment greatly lowered the sheet resistances of the TCFs, but almost eliminated the difference of sheet resistances between them. This seems to be because the electrical conductivity increased not only due to further removal of surfactants but also due to p-type doping upon the acid treatment. The doping effect was likely to overwhelm the effect of surfactant removal. Although the nitric acid treatment resulted in the similar. electrical properties to the two samples, the TCFs of TH-SWCNTs showed much lower sheet resistances than those of the TA-SWCNTs prior to the acid treatment.

  • Boron trifluoride lithium methacrylate ($BF_3$LiMA)-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) were synthesized with various $BF_3$LiMA concentration to elucidate the effect on ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability by a AC impedance and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). As a result, the highest ionic conductivity reached $5.3{\times}10^{-4}Scm^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was obtained for 4 wt% of $BF_3$LiMA. Furthermore, high electrochemical stability up to 4.3 V of the $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE was observed in LSV measurement since the counter anion was immobilized in this self-doped system. On the other hand, it was assumed that there was a rapid decomposition of electrolytes on a lithium metal electrode which results in a high solid electrolyte interface (SEI) resistance. However, a high stability toward graphite or lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) electrode thereby a low SEI resistance was observed from the AC impedance measurement as a function of storage time at $25^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high ionic conductivity, good electrochemical stability and the good interfacial compatibility with graphite and LCO were achieved in $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE.

  • Recently, as the down-scailing of field-effect transistor devices continues, Schottky-barrier field-effect transistors (SB-FETs) have attracted much attention as an alternative to conventional MOSFETs. SB-FETs have advantages over conventional devices, such as low parasitic source/drain resistance due to their metallic characteristics, low temperature processing for source/drain formation and physical scalability to the sub-10nm regime. The good scalability of SB-FETs is due to their metallic characteristics of source/drain, which leads to the low resistance and the atomically abrupt junctions at metal (silicide)-silicon interface. Nevertheless, some reports show that SB-FETs suffer from short channel effect (SCE) that would cause severe problems in the sub 20nm regime.[Ouyang et al. IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 53, 8, 1732 (2007)] Because source/drain barriers induce a depletion region, it is possible that the barriers are overlapped in short channel SB-FETs. In order to analyze the SCE of SB-FETs, we carried out systematic studies on the Schottky barrier overlapping in short channel SB-FETs using a SILVACO ATLAS numerical simulator. We have investigated the variation of surface channel band profiles depending on the doping, barrier height and the effective channel length using 2D simulation. Because the source/drain depletion regions start to be overlapped each other in the condition of the $L_{ch}$~80nm with $N_D{\sim}1\times10^{18}cm^{-3}$ and $\phi_{Bn}$ $\approx$ 0.6eV, the band profile varies as the decrease of effective channel length $L_{ch}$. With the $L_{ch}$~80nm as a starting point, the built-in potential of source/drain schottky contacts gradually decreases as the decrease of $L_{ch}$, then the conduction and valence band edges are consequently flattened at $L_{ch}$~5nm. These results may allow us to understand the performance related interdependent parameters in nanoscale SB-FETs such as channel length, the barrier height and channel doping.

  • Effects of $Ag_2O$ doping on the electromagnetic properties in the BiSrCaCuO superconductor. The electromagnetic properties of doped and undoped $Ag_2O$ in the BiSrCaCuO superconductor were evaluated to investigate the contribution of the pinning centers. It was confirmed experimentally that a larger amount of magnetic flux was trapped in the $Ag_2O$ doped sample than in the undoped one, indicating that the pinning centers of magnetic flux are related closely to the occurrence of the magnetic effect. We have fabricated superconductor ceramics by the chemical process. A high Tc superconductor with a nominal composition of $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ was prepared by the organic metal salts method. Experimental results suggest that the intermediate phase formed before the formation of the superconductor phase may be the most important factor. The relation between electromagnetic properties of Bi HTS and the external applied magnetic field was studied. The electrical resistance of the superconductor was increased by the application of the external magnetic field. But the increase in the electrical resistance continues even after the removal of the magnetic field. The reason is as follows; the magnetic flux due to the external magnetic field penetrates through the superconductor and the penetrated magnetic flux is trapped after the removal of the magnetic flux. During the sintering, doped $Ag_2O$ was converted to Ag particles that were finely dispersed in superconductor samples. It is considered that the area where normal conduction takes place increases by adding $Ag_2O$ and the magnetic flux penetrating through the sample increases. The results suggested that $Ag_2O$ acts to amplify pinning centers of magnetic flux, contributing to the occurrence of the electromagnetic properties.

  • A strontium titanate ($SrTiO_3$)-based material with a perovskite structure is considered to be one of the promising alternatives to $LaCrO_3$-based materials since $SrTiO_3$ perovskite shows a high chemical stability under both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres at high temperatures. $SrTiO_3$ materials exhibit an n-type semiconducting behavior when it is donor-doped and/or exposed to a reducing atmosphere. In this work, $Sr_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-y}M_yO_3$ materials doped with $La^{3+}$ in A-sites and aliovalent transition metal ions ($M^{n+}$) in B-sites were synthesized by the modified Pechini method. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the materials synthesized by the Pechini process exhibited a single curbic perovskite-type structure without any impurity phases, and are tolerant, to some extent, to cation doping. The sintering behaviors of $Sr_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-y}M_yO_3$ in $H_2/N_2$ and air were characterized by dilatometry and microstructural observations. The electrical conduction mechanism and the dopant effect are discussed based on the defect structures and the electrical conductivities measured at various oxygen partial pressures and temperatures.
