  • The smaller size and higher integration of advanced electronic package systems result in severe electrochemical reliability issues in microelectronic packaging due to higher electric field under high temperature and humidity conditions. Under these harsh conditions, electronic components respond to applied voltages by electrochemical ionization of metal and the formation of a filament, which leads to short-circuit failure of an electronic component, which is termed electrochemical migration. This work aims to evaluate electrochemical migration susceptibility of the pure Sn, Sn-3.5Ag, Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder alloys in $Na_{2}SO_{4}$. The water drop test was performed to understand the failure mechanism in a pad patterned solder alloy. The polarization test and anodic dissolution test were performed, and ionic species and concentration were analyzed. Ag and Cu additions increased the time to failure of Pb-free solder in 0.001 wt% $Na_{2}SO_{4}$ solution at room temperature and the dendrite was mainly composed of Sn regardless of the solders. In the case of SnAg solders, when Ag and Cu added to the solders, Ag and Cu improved the passivation behavior and pitting corrosion resistance and formed inert intermetallic compounds and thus the dissolution of Ag and Cu was suppressed; only Sn was dissolved. If ionic species is mainly Sn ion, dissolution content than cathodic deposition efficiency will affect the composition of the dendrite. Therefore, Ag and Cu additions improve the electrochemical migration resistance of SnAg and SnAgCu solders.

  • Recent discovery of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phenomena in perovskite manganese oxides has evoked great interest for its physical peculiarity and the possible industrial application. Besides manganese oxides, CMR phenomena is also observed in $Tl_2Mn_2O_7$ with pyrochlore structure and in Cr-based chalcogenide with spinel structure. In this paper, we have studied electronic structures of Cr-based chalcogenide spindles $Fe_{1-x}Cu_xCr_2S_4$ at x=0.0, 0.5, 1.0 using the linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) band method within the local density approximation (LDA). The characteristic resistivity for x=0.0, 0.5 could be explained qualitatively in terms of the half-metalic electronic structure and the Jahn-Teller effect. Especially, the half-metallic nature appearing in the metallic temperature regime is well descibed by the proposed conduction model for x=0.0, 0.5, 1.0. We have suggested, based on the conduction model, that the CMR phenomena observed in these compounds are closely correlated with the obtained half-metallic electronic structure.

  • The nonstoichiometry and electrical conductivities of Tm$_2O_3$ were studied in the oxygen pressure $2\;{\times}\;10^{-1}\;-1\;{\tiems}\;10^{-4}$ atm under the temperature ranges from 700 to 1100$^{\circ}$C. The x values of $TmO_{1.5+X}$ were varied in the ranges of 0.1004∼0.0110. The enthalpies of formation of the nonstoichiometric compounds were found to be 5.40-4.71 kcal/mole, and the average activation energy obtained from the plots of log conductivity vs. 1000/T was 1.65 eV. The Po$_2$ dependencies of the electrical conductivity were found to be linear and closely approaximated to ${\sigma}{\alpha} PO{\frac{1}{2}^{/5.3}$ in the temperature range 700∼1100$^{\circ}$C. The nonstoichiometry and the electrical conductivity are due to trivalent metal vacancies.

  • Compounds such as NaN belong to an interesting class of materials in which a magnetic order may appear despite the lack of d electrons. The magnetic properties of these materials are ascribed to the partially filled p shells. Recently, on the basis of electronic structure calculations from first principles, it has been found that NaN is a ferromagnetic half-metal in rocksalt (RS) and zinc-blende (ZB) structures with half-metallic band gaps in majority electron channels. The former structure has appeared to be more stable. From the first-principles calculation, we found that the half-metallic properties of the bulk RS and ZB NaN are conserved at the RS(001) and ZB(110) surfaces. Due to the interactions between Na s and N p electrons, N atoms become positively polarized. In the RS NaN (001) the calculated values of the magnetic moments of the N atoms is about $0.73{\mu}_B$. The magnetic moment on the N atom in the top most layer of ZB(110) is slightly larger than that of the RS(001) surface, i.e., $0.75{\mu}_B$. The Na atoms in the both structure are hardly polarized.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activities of enzymatic digests from citrus by-products (CBPs) prepared by high speed drying (HSD). HSD needs a short time (60 min) for drying and can be used in a commercial scale. Enzymatic digests were prepared from the CBPs using 6 enzymes such as aminoglucosidase (AMG), celluclast, pectinex, termamyl, ultraflo, and viscozyme. Antioxidant activities of AMG digest from CBPs were evaluated by different in vitro models such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, alkyl, $H_2O_2$ scavenging, metal chelating, lipid peroxidation, and comet assays, and exhibited strong activities. The antioxidant compounds were detected by an high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled on-line to an 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ($ABTS^+$) scavenging detection system, and found that hesperidin was the key compound. Therefore, the results obtained in this study suggest that HSD is an effective method to transform wet CBPs into dried form, and CBPs are potential source of natural antioxidant.

  • To perform a long-term ambient sampling study at a residential site, an air sampler was constructed to collect 24-hour integrated air samples suitable for the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. It includes an esthetically acceptance due to proximity to homes, as fell as providing the required sampling specifications. The VOCs sampler accomodates four 5/8 "stainless steel(SS) traps packed with adsorbent(Tenax) and is capable of four flow rates in the range of 5 to 50 cc/min. Sintered metal filters(10 micrometer) were directly connected to the inlet of the trap adapters. Additional specifications include: 1) constructed of organically inert materials, 2) weatherproof, 3) battery operated, 4) collecting of VOCs at a breathing zone level, and 5) quiet operation with micro diaphragm pumps wrapped by the sponge. The pump/battery system was separated from the sampling shelter. Sound levels measured for this system were below permissible sound levels (NJDEP) at a residential site. The sampler has been successfully operated at both ground level in a residential area and on the roof of a one story elementary school.hool.

  • Fluorine-doped YBaS12TCuS13TOS17-xTFS1yT superconducting materials with y varing two orders of magnitude form 0.02 to 2.0 have been prepared by a sol-gel process by using metal nitrate salts, sodium hydroxide and sodium fluoride. Fluorine contents have been measured using an ion-selective electrode. All fluorine doped as reactant were found to be present in the resulted samples. From the observation of XRD it has been concluded that the samples with y 0.2 formed simply the single phase of perovskite structure, whereas those with y 0.5 yielded together some compounds such as BaFS12T, YFS13T and CuO in the resulted samples. The observation of solid state S019TF NMR has been carried out in order to check whether fluorine was actually incorporated into the lattice sites, and the experimental results revealed that the mole ratio of fluorine incorporated into the lattice sites of YBaS12TCuS13TOS17-xT was approximately 0.2 per mole of the compound. Also electrical resistivity measurement indicated that onset transition temperature has the tendency to increase slightly with increasing y in the dilute region as y 0.2.

  • As concerns regarding water pollution grow, the need increases for a fast and accurate assessment of ecological risk. In this context, many studies have been conducted to identify biomarkers which can sensitively indicate exposure to and effects of various contaminants in a water environment. However, the utility of most such biomarkers in the real water environment is not yet validated. In this paper, we conducted a thorough review of publications that were related to developing or evaluating molecular and biochemical biomarkers of freshwater fish in ecological risk assessment, and evaluated whether these biomarkers of interest could link to the effects on higher biological levels, such as histopathology and above. Biomarkers of interest included those associated with metabolism, oxidative stress, reproduction and endocrine disruption, genotoxicity, and defense against heavy metal exposure. We found that, when used alone, most molecular and biochemical biomarkers are not sufficient to understand the effects of toxic substances in higher biological levels, due to defense or acclimation mechanisms of organisms. Moreover, some biomarkers respond not only to hazardous substances but also to the changes in water quality and disease outbreak. Molecular and biochemical biomarkers may be most useful in understanding the potential biological effects of toxic compounds when used in parallel with relevant endpoints of higher biological levels.

  • Giga bit dynamic random access memory(DRAM) requires the capacitor of high dielectric films. Some metal oxides films have been proposed as the dielectric material . And Pt is one of the most promising electrode materials. However very little has been done in developing the etching technologoy Pt film. Therefore, it is the first priority to develop the technology for plasma etching of Pt film. In this study, the dry etching of Pt film was investigated in Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) etching system with Cl$_2$/Ar and HBr/Cl$_2$/Ar gas mixing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used in analysis of sidewall residues for the understanding of etching mechanism. We found the etch residues on the pattern sidewall is mainly Pt-Pt, Pt-Cl and Pt-Br compounds, Etch profile was observed by Scanning Electron Spectroscopy(SEM) . The etch rate of Pt film at 10%, Cl$_2$/90% Ar gas mixing ration was higher than at 100%. Ar. Addition of HBr to Cl$_2$/Ar as an etching gas led to generally higher selectivity to SiO$_2$. And the etch residues were reduced at 5% HBr/5% Cl$_2$/90% Ar gas mixing ration. • Gas-sensor array technology, which has been much utilized in the field of food technology by the name of 'electronic nose' is drawing attention in diagnosing lung cancer based on the analysis of the exhaled human breath. Much understanding has been accomplished about the composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the human exhaled breath, in spite of some variations depending on research groups due mainly to lack of the standardization of the sensing procedures. Since VOCs may be produced during the process of cellular metabolism, difference in the cellular metabolism between healthy cells and lung cancer cells are expected to be reflected on the composition variation of the exhaled VOCs. Several studies have attempted to apply the gas-sensor array technology to lung cancer analysis using many different types of sensors including metal oxide, carbon black-polymer composite, surface acoustic wave, and gold nanoparticles. In this mini-review VOC as biomarkers, sensor array technology and application of the array technology for the diagnosis of cancer disease have been described.
