In situ growth of Mg-Al hydrotalcite film on AZ31 Mg alloy

  • An environmentally friendly method for in situ growth of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HT) film on AZ31 magnesium alloy has been developed. The growth processes and corrosion resistance of the HT film were investigated. Then the HT film was surface modified by phytic acid solution to further improve the corrosion resistance. The film formation involves the dissolution of AZ31 substrate, adsorption of the ions from solution, nucleation of the precursor, followed by the dissolution of $Al^{3+}$, exchanging of $OH^-$ by $CO{_3}^{2-}$ and growth of the HT film. The HT film is very compact and acts as a barrier against $Cl^-$ attack in the early stage of corrosion, and then the surface of the film is dissolved gradually. This dense HT film can provide effective protection to the AZ31 alloy. The HT film with surface modification by phytic acid presents a self-healing feature and exhibits better corrosion resistance.

저온 브레이징용 Al-Si-Cu 합금의 Sn 첨가에 따른 융점 및 기계적 특성 변화 연구 (Effect of Tin Addition on the Melting Temperatures and Mechanical Properties of Al-Si-Cu Brazing Filler Metals)

  • For the development of a low-melting point filler metal for brazing aluminum alloy, we analyzed change of melting point and wettability with addition of Sn into Al-20Cu-10Si filler metal. DSC results showed that the addition of 5 wt% Sn into the Al-20Cu-10Si filler metal caused its liquidus temperature to decrease by about 30 oC. In the wettability test, spread area of melted Al-Cu-Si-Sn alloy is increased through the addition of Sn from 1 to 5 wt%. For the measuring of the mechanical properties of the joint region, Al 3003 plate is brazed by Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn filler metal and the mechanical property is measured by tensile test. The results showed that the tensile strength of the joint region is higher than the tensile strength of Al 3003. Thus, failure occurred in the Al 3003 plate.

알루미늄 합금 GMAW 용접부의 전기화학적 방법에 의한 내식성 평가 (Electrochemical Corrosion Evaluation of Aluminum Alloy Weldment Prepared by GMAW Process)

  • The aim of the present study is to evaluate electrochemical corrosion characteristics of base metal and weldment of Al-Mg alloy in seawater solution. The specimen was 5mm thick 5083-H321 Al alloy plate which was butt-welded using gas metal arc welding (GMAW). To identify the types of inclusions in the weldment, the microstructural observation was performed along with Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The anodic polarization experiments were performed to evaluate the corrosion characteristics. After the anodic polarization test, the corroded surface was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) and EDS. The result of the analysis revealed a large number of voids in the weldment, especially coarse grains and inclusions in the heat affected zone. The corrosion current density of the weldment was found to be approximately 13 times higher than that of the base metal, indicating lower corrosion resistance of the weldment due to the defects in the weldment and the heat affected zone.

Manufacturing Techniques of Ancient Metal Buddha Statues from Archaeological Sites in Bagan, Myanmar

  • This study intends to identify manufacturing techniques, including casting and alloy composition, of nine metal Buddha statues excavated from archaeological sites in Bagan, Myanmar. Two Buddha statues from Pyu city state(2nd to 9th century) contain Cu-Sn alloy(including <1 wt% Fe), with different relatively high percentages of Sn(16 wt% and 25 wt%) identified from each Buddha statue, and no Pb detected. Five Buddha statues from the Bagan dynasty contain various alloy ratios of Cu-Sn(including <1 wt% Pb), Cu-Sn-Pb, and Cu-Sn-Zn-Pb. All Buddha statues appear to be fabricated by casting, as there is no evidence of other heat treatments. The silver Buddha statue manufactured in the 18th century includes >1% Cu besides silver with no additional metallic components identified. The bronze Buddha statue manufactured in the Konbaung dynasty(18th century) is of Cu-Sn-Pb alloy. The Buddha statues of Pyu was alloy of Cu-Sn without Pb including ahigh percentage of The Buddha statues of both the Bagan and Konbaung dynasties are comprised of ternary Cu-Sn-Pb alloys, with a heterogeneous distribution of lead and tin. Some of Buddha statues of the Bagan dynasty have similar alloy ratios as those of Pyu, suggesting that similar manufacturing techniques were used.

NMOS 소자의 Ta-Ti 게이트 전극 특성 (Characteristics of Ta-Ti Gate Electrode for NMOS Device)

  • 본 논문에서는 오래 전부터 NMOS의 게이트 전극으로 사용된 폴리실리콘을 대체할 수 있는 Ta-Ti 합금의 특성에 대해 연구하였다. 실리콘 기판 위에 열적으로 성장된 $SiO_2$ 위에 Ta과 Ti의 두 타깃을 사용하여 co-sputterring 방법으로 Ta-Ti 합금을 증착하였다. 각각의 타깃은 100W의 sputtering power로 증착하여 시편을 제작하였다. 또한 비교 분석을 위하여 Ta을 100W의 sputtering power로 증착한 시편도 제작하였다. 제작된 Ta-Ti 합금 게이트의 열적/화학적 안정성을 검토하기 위하여 $600^{\circ}C$에서 급속열처리를 수행한 결과 소자의 성능 저하는 나타나지 않았다. 또한 전기적 특성 분석 결과 Ta-Ti 합금은 NMOS에 적합한 일함수인 4.13eV를 산출해 낼 수 있었고, 면저항 역시 폴리실리콘에 비해 낮은 값을 얻을 수 있었다.

도재용착용 Ni-Cr계 합금의 이트륨 첨가물이 도재전단결합강도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of yttrium additives on the shear bond strength of porcelain fused to Ni-Cr alloy for porcelain fused metal crown)

  • Purpose: In this study, to evaluate the effect of oxide changes on the shear bond strength according to the composition of Ni-Cr alloys for porcelain fused matal crown, T-4 alloys, Zeroy alloys and Zeroy-X alloys were selected. Methods: 20 specimens were fabricated using selected Ni-Cr alloys and porcelain powders. A Ni-Cr alloy having a diameter of 5 mm and a height of 25 mm was produced and the metal surface was polished. Porcelain powder was fired on the polished metal surface to a diameter of 5 mm and a height of 3 mm. The experiment group consisted of three groups, T-4(TNA), Zeroy(ZNA) and Zeroy-X(ZXA). The fabricated specimens were mounted on a jig of a universal testing machine(UTM) and fracture strength was measured by applying a shear force at a UTM crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The fracture strength was calculated as the bond strength between the porcelain and the alloy. The surface of the fractured alloy was analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and the components of the oxide were measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) line profile method. Results: In SEM, XRD and EDX analysis, yttrium tended to increase the mechanical and chemical bonding forces. The shear bond strength of ZXA group containing yttrium showed the highest value at 27.53 MPa. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is considered that the yttrium-added Ni-Cr alloy is clinically acceptable in porcelain shear bond strength.

친환경 마그네슘-공기 전지용 AZ31, AZ61 마그네슘 합금 전극의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical properties of AZ31, AZ61 magnesium alloy electrodes for eco-friendly Magnesium-air battery)

  • 환경 친화적인 마그네슘-공기 전지는 이론적 방전용량이 매우 높은 1차전지로 알려진 금속-공기 전지이며 대기 중 산소를 양극 활물질로 사용하고 마그네슘 합금을 연료로 사용하는 관점에서 금속-연료전지로도 불리고 있다. 음극으로 사용하는 마그네슘합금의 성능에 따라 전지 전체 성능이 결정되므로 고성능 전지로 상용화하기 위해서는 음극 재료인 마그네슘 합금 전극의 성능에 대한 연구와 개선이 필요하다. 본 연구는 상용화된 마그네슘 합금(AZ31, AZ61)을 선택하여 마그네슘-공기 전지용 전극재료로서 가능성을 평가하기 위하여 전기화학적인 측정을 실시하고 방전 특성을 조사하였다. 개방회로전위 변화, Tafel 곡선 변화, 순환전류전압곡선 측정을 통해 마그네슘합금들의 전기화학적 특성을 조사하였고 정전류 방전 실험을 통해 AZ61 합금의 우수한 방전 용량(1410mAhg-1)과 가능성을 평가하였다.

다결정 실리콘 박막으로 구성된 Metal-Semiconductor-Metal 광검출기의 제조 (Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Photodetector Fabricated on Thin Polysilicon Film)

  • A polysilicon-based metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetector was fabricated by means of our new methods. Its photoresponse characteristics were analyzed to see if it could be applied to a sensor system. The processes on which this study focused were an alloy-annealing process to form metal-polysilicon contacts, a post-annealing process for better light absorption of as-deposited polysilicon, and a passivation process for lowering defect density in polysilicon. When the alloy annealing was achieved at about $400^{\circ}C$, metal-polysilicon Schottky contacts sustained a stable potential barrier, decreasing the dark current. For better surface morphology of polysilicon, rapid thermal annealing (RTA) or furnace annealing at around $900^{\circ}C$ was suitable as a post-annealing process, because it supplied polysilicon layers with a smoother surface and a proper grain size for photon absorption. For the passivation of defects in polysilicon, hydrogen-ion implantation was chosen, because it is easy to implant hydrogen into the polysilicon. MSM photodetectors based on the suggested processes showed a higher sensitivity for photocurrent detection and a stable Schottky contact barrier to lower the dark current and are therefore applicable to sensor systems.

Fe 기내열합금의 액상확상접합용 삽입금속의 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on Development of Insert Metal for Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding of Fe Base Heat Resistance Alloy)

  • The change of microstructure in the bonded interlayer and tensile properties of joints were studied for liquid phase diffusion bonding using STS-310 and Incoloy-825 as base metal and base metal+B alloy as insert inetal. Main experimental results obtained in this study are as follows. 1) The optimum amount of B addition into the insert metal was found to be about 4mass%. 2) When isothermal solidification was completed, the microstructure in the bonded interlayer was the same with that of the base metal because of the grain boundary migration in the bonded interlayer. 3) All of the tensile specimen fractured at base metal and joints bonded at optimum condition exhibited tensile properties in excess of base metal requirements. 4) It was determined that fine car-borides and bordes such as M$_{23}$(C,B)$_{6}$, Cr$_{2}$B, and CrB in STS-310S and TiB in Incoloy-825 exist at the grain boundary around bonded interlayer. These precipitates almost disappeared after homogenizing treatment at 1373K for 86.4ks.s.

ZrO2-Ti합금의 활성금속 브레이징 (Active Metal Brazing Applied to Joining of ZrO2-Ti Alloy)

  • In this study, active metal brazing methods for $ZrO_2$ and Ti alloy were discussed. To get a successful metal-ceramic bonding, various factors (melting temperature, corrosion, sag resistance, thermal expansion coefficient etc. of base materilas and filler metal) should be considered. Moreover, in order to clarify bonding between the metal and ceramic, the mechanism of the interfacial structure of the joints should be identified. The driving force for the formation of metal and ceramic interfaces is the reduction of the free energy which occurs when their contact becomes complete. Interfacial bonding depends on the material combinations and the bonding processes. This study describes the bonding between ceramic and metal in an active metal brazing.
