Two cases of human Erhinostoma hortense infection and their probable infection source were identified by prasiqantel (Distocide) treatment of the patients and by examining two kinds of fresh water fish which were eaten raw by them. The result of the research can be summarized as follows: 1. The patients, each aged 31 and 30, were residing in the same house in Wonju City, Kangwon Province. The first case was hospitalized due to epidemic hemorrhagic fever (E.H. fever) and the second case was healthy but had slight degree of abdominal pain and diarrhea from time to time. In the stool examination, eggs of 5. hortense ($114.3{\times}71.0{\mu\textrm{m}}$) average from the first case and $119.1{\times}68.3{\mu\textrm{m}}$ average from the second) were found. By administering single dose of praziquantel (10~15mg/kg) and purgation with magnesium salt to them. sin adults of 5. hortense were collected from the diarrheal stools of the second case. 2. By examining 8:k Moroco oxycephalus and 20 Carassius carassius which were captured at the place where the two patients had captured and eaten the fresh water fish, the metacercariae of Echinostoma sp. were found from 3 (3.5%) M. oxycephalus. 3. After the experimental infection of 3 isolated metacercariae to one albino rat three adults of 5. hortense were recovered. By the present study, the two patients revealing the echinostomatid eggs in their stools were proven to be infected with 5. hortense and to be the second and third human cases of this luke infection in Korea. Mcroco oxycephalus harboured the metacercariae of E. hortense and appeared to be a new second intermediate host.
Many encysted metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum(Rudolphi, 1814) were found in the flesh near the skin of goldfish(Carassius auratus) sultured at a fish farm in Chonbuk Province, Korea, in the summer of 1995. The mortality reached about 7% from July 10 to August 20. Encysted and excysted metacercariae were$700\sim877{\times}700\sim775{\mu}m$ and $2.4\sim5.5{\times}0.7\sim1.37{\mu}m$ in size, respectively. The parasites looked yellowish due to the yellow particulate matter in the intestine. Of 276 fish examined, 234(84.8%) were infected with a mean intensity of 216.6(range 1~1.214) parasites. Fish of 2.0~2.5 cm in body length were most frequently(94.3%) infected but those of 3.1~3.5 cm were the least infected(75.27%). The isthmus was most heavily infected. There was no difference in prevalence between two forms of goldfish, Gyariko an Ryugum. The sites of infection were swollen and recognized as yellow spots of 0.4~0.8 mm in diameter. Fish infected with more than 200 metacercariae became moribund with listless swimming and finally died.

The metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum (Rudolphi, 1814) were isolated in the whole body muscle of wild freshwater fish, spotted barbel gudgeon (Squalidus multimaculatus Rosoya et Jeon) from the local river in Yeongdeok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. The infected fish with bumpy body surface by "yellow grub" showed erratic swimming behavior and some fish were died. The isolated excysted metacercariae were tongue shaped and 2.85~5.89 mm ${\times}$ 0.8~1.99 mm in size. 1~98 metacercariae were isolated in individual fish and mean infection intensity was 25. All examined adult spotted barbel gudgeon sizing 7 cm in body length were infected. This is the first report of disease outbreak and mortality caused by C. complanatum infection in wild freshwater fish in Korea.
The present study was performed to observe characteristics of the lifE history of Echinoparvphium recunpatum under both natural and laboratory conditions in Korea. A batch of Rcnix aunculnria corecna was collected from Sunamchon, one of the stream of West Naktonggang (River), in Kangso-gu, Pusan during August and September 1992. Out of 106 snails examined by crushing,52 (49.0%) were infected with larval E. recurvaum i.e. rediae, cercariae and metacercariae. Cercariae naturally shed from snails encysted in the snails of same species and loaches, but not in mud-snails. Adult worms were detected from chicks and ducks experimentally infected with metacercariae, but not from rats and mice. The average recovery rate of adults from chicks was 13.1%. Rediae were sac-like, $2.437{\;}{\times}{\;}0.317{\;}mm$ in average size, with a muscular pharynx and a brownish cecum which reached the anterior half of the body. Cercariae consisted of a spindle-shaped body ($0.262{\;}{\times}{\;}0.129{\;}mm$ in average) and a rod-like tail ($0.528{\;}{\times}{\;}0.056{\;}mm$ in average). In the cercarial body, 45 collar spines were observed on the head crown, and double rows of excretory ducts with fine granules were laterally arranged between the pharynnx and the ventral sucker. Metacercariae were spherical, $0.144{\;}{\times}{\;}0.142{\;}mm in average size, with thick hyaline outer and thin elastic inner walls, and many excretory granules. Adults were slender and more attenuated in the anterior end, $0.2760{\;}{\times}{\;}0.550{\;}mm$ in average size, and had 45 collar spines including four end group spines on both ventral corners. From the above results, it was confirmed that R. auriculnna corennc plays a pivotal role in the life cycle of 5. recuwatum as the first and/or second intermediate hosts in Korea.
The Hongcheon river system knows down through the Hongcheon area of Kangwon-do, and reaches to the Cheongpyeong "Dam in Kyonggi.do. Stool specimens from the inhabitants residing along the Hongcheon river basin were examined to detect infection rates of Metagonimus sp. , and the intermediate hosts were collected to detect larval stages. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Thirty-nine (33 males and 6 females) out of 529 (314 males and 215 females) inhabitants were infected with Metagonimus sp., showing a total positive rate of 7.4%. 2. In eight areas surveyed, the specimens from Kulji.ri of Bukbang-myon at the middle part of the river showed the highest positive rate of 26.9% (14 positives out of 52) (males; 38.2%), The specimens from Mogog-ri of Seo-myon at the downstream of the river showed a positive rate of 10.4%(13 positives out of 125) (males; 12.6%). The positive rates in other regions were less than 10%. 3. The density of the first intermediate host, Semisulcospira sp., was the highest in Kulji.ri of Bukbang-myon (10~20 snails per $m^2$), and the infection rate of Metagonimus cercariae in the snails was 10.7%(13 positives out of 121 snails). 4. The infection rate of Metagonimus metacercariae in Zacco platypus, the freshwater Bish favorably eaten raw by the inhabitants, was 68.25 (30 positives out of 44 fishes), and most metacercariae were detected under the scales (89.95). 5. Adult flukes were obtained from the small intestine of a rat, 15 days after infection with the metacercariae obtained from Z. platypus. These adult cukes were identified to be the same species as thcse obtained from human hosts. By this survey, new endemic areas of Metagonimus infection were discovered along the Hongcheon river basin and the main source of infection was the fresh water ash, Z. platypus.
Recent patterns of infection with digenetic larval trematodes in fresh- water and brackish-water ask were studied in three locations of the river Taewha during the period from April to October, 1988, and compared with the data reported previously in the same river, 0(16 species of fish examined, the encysted larvae of Cyathocotyle orientalis were found most frequently from 9 species of fresh.water fish. The metacercariae of Echinochasmus sp. , Metacercaria hasegawai and Metagonimus yokogawai were found from 8 species, those of Clonorchis sinensis from 7 species, and Exorchis oviformis and Metorchis orientalis from 5 species of fish. The infection rates of fish with C. sinensis metacercariae were not lower than those reported in 1980, whereas their intensity of infection was found lowered in 3 species, Ccreobagrus brevicorpus, Gnathopogon atromaculatus, and Funtungia herzi. The infection rates of 3 species of fish with M. yokogawai metacercariae were lower than the results in 1982, while the rate was higher in 2 species, Zacco platypus, and Z. temmincki, and rather stationary in Flecoglossus altivelis. The intensity of infection in several species of fish appeared rather higher than in 1980. The encysted larvae of C. orientalis, Echinochasmus sp., E. oviformis and Metacercaria hasegawai showed variations in infection rates of fish in 1980 and in the present study. It was found that the rate of infection with digenetic larval trematodes in fresh- water fish was still relatively high in the river Taewha, and the metacercarial burden in the fish varied greatly by different fish in 1980 and in the present study.
A scanning electron microscopic study was performed to observe the tegumental ultrastructures of Paragonimus iloktuenensis according to its developmental stages. The metacercariae were obtained from the liver of the brackish water crab, Sesarma dehaani. Juvenile and adult p. iloktsuenensis were recovered from the experimental rats on 2, 4 and 8 weeks after infection. The findings were summarized as follows: 1. The encysted metacercariae were charaeteristically gourd-shape, with their whole body surface beset with numerous spade-shape spines. The Barge, type II sensory papillae (non-ciliated round swellings) were arranged along the rim of the oral and ventral suckers, 11~12 and 6~8 in numbers respectively, 2. Two-week old juvenile worms, recovered chieay from the liver of the experimental rats, were slender in body shape: with their ventral sucker near the anterior one-third level. The distribution of tegumental spines was less dense than in the encysted metacercariae. The spines were with 1~2 pointed tips and 3~.4 longitudinal splits. Numerous ciliated knob-like, type I papillae were observed in both sides of the oral sucker, and 6 large, type If papillae were arranged along the rim of the ventral sucker. 3. Four week old worms, recovered from the thoracic cavity and/or lung parenchyme of the experimental rats, were thicker than wide in body configuration, and their ventral sucker was located near the anterior one.fourth level. The tegumental spines at ventral surface were grouped, each group with 3~5 aggregated ones. The type I and type II papillae (small-sired) were distributed chiefly around the rim of two suckers. 4. Adult (eight-week old) worms, recovered from the capsules in the lung parenchyme, were very stout, and covered densely with bearfoot like spines. At dorsal surface, cobblestone-like cytoplasmic processes were well-developed, with many tegumental spines embedded in them. It was observed in this study that the tegument of p. iloktsuenensis continued to change and differentiate as the worms grew to be adults.
An experimental study was carried out to observe the effects of radiation on the infectivity of metacercariae of Gymnophalloines seoi to C3H mice. Oysters, the second intermediate host, were collected from an endemic area, and non-irradiated control, metacercaria-irradiation, and oyster-irradiation groups were prepared . One hundred metacercariae were infected orally to each mouse, and worm recovery rate was compared by groups at 7th day post-infection. In the metacercaria-irradiation group, the worm recovery rate was significantly reduced at radiation doses higher than 200 Gy, and the number of intrauterine eggs significantly reduced at doses over 50 Gy. In the oyster- irradiation group, 50 Gy significantly reduced both the worm recovery rate and number of uterine eggs. In the two groups, no worm was recovered at 1,000 Gy irradiation. Conclusively, irradiation of oysters with 200-1,000 Gy was effective to control infectivity of metacercariae to C3H mice, and could be adopted as a control measure for gymno-phalloidiasis.
The present study was undertaken to demonstrate the surface structure of Paragonimus westermani metacercaria in Korea with special reference to the distribution of sensory papillae. Metacercariae were isolated from crayfish, one of the second intermediate tost of P. westermani in Bogil island, Chollanam-do (Province), Korea, where has been known as an endemic area of human paragonimiasis. Isolated metacercariae were encysted and examined with light. scanning and transmission electron microscopes for morphological features. On the surface of iBetacercariae, three types of sensory FaFillae were identified. Large domed papillae ($3~5{\mu\textrm{m}}$), which were covered with wrinkled plasma n!embrane of the worm, were distributed on the oral and ventral suckers only. On the oral sucker, these large domed papillae were 12~13 in number. On the other hand large domed papillae on the ventral sucker were constantly 6 in number and hexagonal in distribution. Small domed papillae ($2~3{\mu\textrm{m}}$), of which surface was more smooth than those of large ones, were distributed symmetrically on the ventral (30~32 pairs) and dorsal surfaces (40~42 Pairs). Ciliated Papillae ($0.8~1.5{\mu\textrm{m}}$) were observed about 5~6 in number around the oral sucker and 3~5 pairs each on the ventral and dorsal surface of the body. Single Fcinted spines covered the entire surface of the body except around the excretory pore. Spines on the anterior fart of the body were 0.9~2.0${\mu\textrm{m}}$ in length and $45~55/100{\mu\textrm{m}}$2 in number, and were gradually reduced in length ($0.4~1.4{\mu\textrm{m}}$) and in nuns.her ($12~27/100{\mu\textrm{m}}$2) toward the posterior part. The body wall of p. westermoni metacercariae was consisted with anucleated syncytium layer, fibrous interstitial layer and musclar layer. In the anucleated syncytium, biconcave ($0.15~0.55{\mu\textrm{m}}$) and spherical ($0.08~0.16{\mu\textrm{m}}$) secretory granules, which were transferred from epidermal cells via protoplasmic tubules, mitochondria and rihoEorses, T-ere observed. Spines originated around the basement membrane protruded externally. Epidermal cells were consisted with a nucleus and a cytoplasm, and connected to syncytium with protoplasmic tubules. In the cytoplasm many secretory granules, mitochondria, Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticula, ribosomes and lipid droplets were observed.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of peritoneal exudate cells in the transfer of immunity against the liver cuke, Clonorchis sinensis in the inbred BALB/c mice. Ten donor mice were divided into 2 groups. One group consisted of 5 mice was infected orally with 20 metacercariae of C. siitensis, and the other group was injected intraperitoneally with 20 excysted larvae. Thirty days after immunization, the peritoneal exudate cells tore obtained from the donor mice. Twenty recipient mice were divided into 4 equal groups for the purpose of primary immunization. The mice of Group I were injected intraperitoneally with $2{\times}10^6$ peritoneal exudate cells of the donor mice infected orally, those of Group II were injected intraperitoneally with $2{\times}10^6$ peritoneal exudate cells of the donor mice injected intraperitoneally. Those of Group III were injected orally with 20 metacercariae of C. sinensis. The group IV mice served as controls. Four days after the primary iMmunization all recipient mice were challenged orally with 20 metacercariae of C. sinensis, and then killed 30 days after the challenging infection. When the peritoneal exudate cells were injected into the recipient mice, pronounced reduction in eggs per gram of the feces was found in the mice o( Group I and Group II, but no reduction in those of Group III. In the worm burdens of C. sinensis, the number of flukes found in the mice of Group II was only significantly less than those in the control group (IV). In addition the number of plaque forming cells per spleen in the mice of Group II was found larger than those in Group I. It is likely that donor peritoneal exudate cells transferred to the recipients might result in the production of relative immunity.
