Various techniques and strategies have been developed for the identification of intracellular metabolic conditions, and among them, isotope balance-based flux analysis with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS) has recently become popular. Even though isotope balance-based flux analysis allows a more accurate estimation of intracellular fluxes, its application has been restricted to relatively small metabolic systems because of the limited number of measurable metabolites. In this paper, a strategy for incorporating isotope balance-based flux data obtained for a small network into metabolic flux analysis was examined as a feasible alternative allowing more accurate quantification of intracellular flux distribution in a large metabolic system. To impose GC/MS based data into a large metabolic network and obtain optimum flux distribution profile, data reconciliation procedure was applied. As a result, metabolic flux values of 308 intracellular reactions could be estimated from 29 GC/ MS based fluxes with higher accuracy.

Background: Metabolic modeling has been an essential tool in metabolic reconstruction, which has dramatically advanced in the last decades as a part of systems biology. At present, the protocol for metabolic reconstruction has been systematically established, and it provides the basis for the analysis of complex systems, which has been limited in the past. Therefore, metabolic reconstruction can be adapted to analyze agricultural systems whose metabolic data has been accumulated recently. Purpose: The aim of this review is to suggest the suitability of metabolic modeling for understanding agricultural metabolic data and to encourage the potential use of this modeling in the field of agriculture. Review: We reviewed the procedure of metabolic reconstruction using computational modeling with applicable strategies and software tools. Additionally, we presented the initial attempts of metabolic reconstruction in the field of agriculture and proposed further applications.
Objectives This study was to identify the lifestyle associated with metabolic syndrome and to suggest a personalized health management according to the constitution to prevent disease by metabolic syndrome stage. Methods This study used the data of Korean medicine Data Center (KDC). A total of 8,985 data were searched for subjects who participated in Anseong and Ansan cohorts study from 2009 to 2012. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictors of metabolic syndrome among police officers and determine its prevalence. Methods: Data were collected through a questionnaire survey and medical examination among 1,089 male police officers from 2010 to 2013. Information about age, marital status, smoking, drinking and exercise were based on data from the self-administered questionnaire. We collected job type, working position, and work duration from company personnel data and the indices of metabolic syndrome through the medical examination. Metabolic syndrome was assessed according to the NCEP-ATP III definition and the Asia-Pacific obesity guidelines. Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the 1,089 police officers was 33.4%. The prevalence of metabolic influencing factors were 47.5% for abdominal obesity, 30.1% for hypertension, 37.1% for hypertriglyceridemia, 22.0% for low HDL-cholesteralemia and 13.2% for hyperglycemia. Factors such as age, drinking, and family history were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Weight control and a moderate drinking program may decrease the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among male police officers.
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of lifestyle factors in metabolic syndrome among adolescents. The metabolic syndrome has been reported as a cause of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes in adolescents. Method: This study is a cross-sectional study on 1,931 adolescents (1,011 boys and 920 girls) aged 12-19 years from the Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, and logistic regression in consideration of strata, cluster, and weight as national data. Result: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adolescents aged 12-19 years was 4.3% (Boys, 5.4%; Girls, 3.1%). Among lifestyle factors, BMI had significants influences on the metabolic syndrome risk, but other variables did not. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that further research is necessary on the effect of lifestyle factors in metabolic syndrome and that school health nurses should focus on implementation of effective programs for promotion of activity and healthy foods for prevention and intervention of metabolic syndrome.

The purpose of this study is to promote understanding of physical activity and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged adults and to provide basic data of interventions development for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome. Using the 2020 data for Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1,786 middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 64 with no missing data were analyzed. As a result of the study, 56.5(±2.1)% of men and 52.9(±1.81)% of women were sufficient activity group among physical activity, and the proportion of men was higher than that of women, but it was not statistically significant(t=1.27, p=.207). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 38.9(±2.1%) of men and 25.4(±1.5)% of women, the prevalence of men was significantly higher than that of women(t=5.12, p<.001). Compared to the insufficient activity group, the sufficient activity group had a 0.71(95% CI: 0.57~0.88) times the risk of developing low HDL(high density lipoprotein)- cholesterol(p=.002), and this pattern was maintained even after adjusting for age, education level, body mass index, smoking status, and drinking status(p=.002). Based on the results of this study, a physical activity and metabolic syndrome risk group in middle-aged adults should be selected, and physical activity promotion program to improve high density lipoprotein-cholesterol among metabolic syndrome indicators should be developed.
Purpose: This study aims to provide preliminary data for weight management, and prevention and management of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We examined the effect of changes in the weight of workers at a manufacturing company over three years on their metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome diagnosis components. Methods: Necessary data were collected from the questionnaire and the results of the Korean National Health Screening of 2015 and 2017, which included 228 workers at a manufacturing company in G region. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. ANCOVA was used to examine the differences in the metabolic syndrome diagnosis components according to weight change. In addition, multiple logistic regression analysis was used to obtain the odds ratios of metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome analysis component, based on the weight changes in the normal weight group and the obesity group. Results: Waist measure, systolic blood pressure, and blood pressure were found to have significant effects based on participants' weight change over three years. These factors increased with a larger increase in weight at a statistically significant level. This study analyzed the weight changes of the normal weight group and the obesity group considering the data from the National Health Screening of 2015, and found that the risk of metabolic syndrome increased at a statistically significant level as body weight increased; thus, the obesity group showed a higher risk in this regard. It was also found that waist measure, fasting blood sugar, and high-density low cholesterol increased at a statistically significant level as body weight increased. Conclusion: Health administrators need to recognize the importance of workers' weight management, select an intensive management group based on a time series analysis of weight changes, and develop and implement programs to manage the metabolic syndrome diagnosis components.
The aim of this study was to construct and test a structural equation model for the risk factors of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. The structural equation model hypothesizes that eating alone and feeling depressed is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. The data of this study were obtained from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey which was cross-sectional data from the representative national survey. A total of 4,013 subjects replied to the survey item of lifestyle and completed the physical examinations among adults aged 19 years or older in South Korea was in 2015. The structural model in this study was composed of four latent variables: eating alone, depression, negative health behavior, and metabolic syndrome. Two variables, the rate of eating alone and depression, were exogenous variables. Negative health behavior was both a mediating variable and endogenous variable, and metabolic syndrome was the final endogenous variable. The data were analyzed using the Maximum Likelihood method and bootstrapping. The structural model was appropriate for the data based on the model fit indices. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Eating alone is a direct risk factor of metabolic syndrome in Korean women. Depression can mediate metabolic syndrome through negative health behaviors. Negative health behavior had a direct impact on metabolic syndrome in both men and women. This study may be a guideline for interventions and strategies to reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.

An important potential of metabolomics-based approach is the possibility to develop fingerprints of diseases or cellular responses to classes of compounds with known common biological effect. Such fingerprints have the potential to allow classification of disease states or compounds, to provide mechanistic information on cellular perturbations and pathways and to identify biomarkers specific for disease severity and drug efficacy. Metabolic profiles of biological fluids contain a vast array of endogenous metabolites. Changes in those profiles resulting from perturbations of the system can be observed using analytical techniques, such as NMR and MS. $^1H$ NMR was used to generate a molecular fingerprint of serum or urinary sample, and then pattern recognition technique was applied to identity molecular signatures associated with the specific diseases or drug efficiency. Several metabolites that differentiate disease samples from the control were thoroughly characterized by NMR spectroscopy. We investigated the metabolic changes in human normal and clinical samples using $^1H$ NMR. Spectral data were applied to targeted profiling and spectral binning method, and then multivariate statistical data analysis (MVDA) was used to examine in detail the modulation of small molecule candidate biomarkers. We show that targeted profiling produces robust models, generates accurate metabolite concentration data, and provides data that can be used to help understand metabolic differences between healthy and disease population. Such metabolic signatures could provide diagnostic markers for a disease state or biomarkers for drug response phenotypes.
The purpose of this study is to provide an academic basis regarding the necessity of managing depression and stress among metabolic syndrome patients by understanding 5 components of metabolic syndrome, perceived stress, and degree of depression, and by investigating their association using the national nutrition survey reference. This study was conducted by using mental health surveys and health screening test data of the 5th (2010~2012) primitive data of the national health and nutrition survey. A total of 19,599 respondents over 19 years of age were selected for the final analysis. The level of depression and stress was set as the dependent variable to identify its connection with 5 components of the metabolic syndrome. For the stress recognition, none of the metabolic syndrome components showed a significant correlation. For experiencing the depression symptom, the fasting glucose among the factors showed a significant correlation (p<0.05) among the metabolic syndrome factors. When it falls within the criteria of fasting glucose of metabolic syndrome, it has a great probability of falling under the group who experienced greater depression symptoms. As a result of the analysis by controlling cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease which is tightly related with metabolic syndrome and depression, this study observed that glucose out of 5 metabolic syndrome components is related with depression.
