The method of cross-section analysis for different sections in a structural frame has been widely investigated since the 1960s for determination of sectional capacities of beam-columns. Many hand-calculated equations and design graphs were proposed for the specific shape and type of sections in pre-computer age decades ago. In design of many practical sections, these equations may be uneconomical and inapplicable for sections with irregular shapes, leading to the high construction cost or inadequate safety. This paper not only proposes a versatile numerical procedure for sectional analysis of beam-columns, but also suggests a method to account for residual stress and geometric imperfections separately and the approach is applied to design of high strength steels requiring axial force-moment interaction for advanced analysis or direct analysis. A cross-section analysis technique that provides interaction curves of arbitrary welded sections with consideration of the effects of residual stress by meshing the entire section into small triangular fibers is formulated. In this study, two doubly symmetric sections (box-section and H-section) fabricated by high-strength steel is utilized to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method against a hand-calculation procedure. The effects of residual stress are mostly not considered explicitly in previous works and they are considered in an explicit manner in this paper which further discusses the basis of the yield surface theory for design of structures made of high strength steels.

In this paper, the defects of two-dimensional anisotropic elastic bodies are identified by using the boundary element method. The use of numerical models that contain only boundary integral terns reduces the dimensionality of the problem by one. This advantage is particularly important in problems such as crack mechanics. Avoiding domain meshing is also particularly advantageous in the solution of inverse problems since it overcomes mesh perturbations and simplifies the procedure. In this paper, nondestructive approaches for the existing isotropic materials are extended to analyze the elastic bodies made of anisotropic materials such as composites. After verifying that the proposing boundary element model is in good agreement with numerical results reported by other investigators, the effect of noise in the measurements on the identifiability is studied with respect to different design parameters of layered composites. Sample studies are carried out for various layup configurations and loading conditions. The effects of the layup sequences in detecting flaw of composites is explored in this paper.

For the large deformation of shear walls under vertical and horizontal loads, there are difficulties in obtaining accurate simulation results using the response analysis method, even with fine mesh elements. Furthermore, concrete material nonlinearity, stiffness degradation, concrete cracking and crushing, and steel bar damage may occur during the large deformation of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls. Matrix operations that are involved in nonlinear analysis using the traditional finite-element method (FEM) may also result in flaws, and may thus lead to serious errors. To solve these problems, a planar four-node element was developed based on vector mechanics. Owing to particle-based formulation along the path element, the method does not require repeated constructions of a global stiffness matrix for the nonlinear behavior of the structure. The nonlinear concrete constitutive model and bilinear steel material model are integrated with the developed element, to ensure that large deformation and damage behavior can be addressed. For verification, simulation analyses were performed to obtain experimental results on an RC shear wall subjected to a monotonically increasing lateral load with a constant vertical load. To appropriately evaluate the parameters, investigations were conducted on the loading speed, meshing dimension, and the damping factor, because vector mechanics is based on the equation of motion. The static problem was then verified to obtain a stable solution by employing a balanced equation of motion. Using the parameters obtained, the simulated pushover response, including the bearing capacity, deformation ability, curvature development, and energy dissipation, were found to be in accordance with the experimental observation. This study demonstrated the potential of the developed planar element for simulating the entire process of large deformation and damage behavior in RC shear walls.

In aerospace structural design, the position of lightening hole is often required to be optimized from the initial design in order to avoid an excessive stress concentration. To remodel the updated configuration in optimization procedure, re-meshing procedure is conventionally adopted. However, this approach is time-consuming, and has limitations especially in handling hexahedral or quadrilateral meshes, which are preferred because of their good numerical performances. To attenuate these disadvantages, new optimization scheme is proposed by combining the MLS(Moving Least Squares) based overset method and the genetic algorithm in this work. To test the validity of the proposed optimization scheme, optimizations of positions of lightening holes in 2D structures have been carried out.

The modularization accomplished a big contribution in cost down and assembly-time shortening and the quality increase. But few improvements were made to this design largely due to the inflexibility of steel. In recent years, door modules made of PP-LFT material is manufactured using injection molding method. As a result, the plastic door modules allow more flexibility of door shape and become lighter. Warpage is generally large in the molded plastic door carrier plate due to the limitation of gate location and the fiber orientation. So after a few test injection the mold compensation processing for the improvement of an assembly characteristic. This research was performed to determine the factors that contribute to warpage for a injection-molded door carrier plate and presented differences in three mesh types of meshing method and its results. as a result we can improve process of tooling modification can reduce process of trial and error.

A cross drilling/milling Unit is an important mechanical part which is widely used in many kinds of machining tool, and various gear trains with good accuracy and reliability features are widely used in power transmission systems. A study on a novel power transmission optimization method for driving gear trains in cross drilling/milling units is presented in this paper. A commercial program for gear system simulation, Romax Designer, was used in this research to intuitively observe the gear meshing and the load distribution conditions on the gear teeth. We obtained the optimal modification value through comparing the results of repeated experiments. For validation, optimized gears were fabricated and then measured with a precision tester.

As the material aging of nuclear power plants has been progressing in domestic and overseas, crack growth becomes one of the most important issues. In this respect, the crack growth assessment has been considered an essential part of structural integrity. The crack growth assessment for nuclear power plants has been generally performed based on ASME B&PV Code, Sec. XI but the idealization of crack shape and the conservative solutions of stress intensity factor (SIF) are used. Although finite element analysis (FEA) based on iterative crack growth analysis is considered as an alternative method to simulate crack growth, there are yet no guidelines to model the crack-tip spider-web mesh for such analysis. In this study, effects of various meshing factors on FE SIF calculation are systematically examined. Based on FEA results, proper criteria for spider-web mesh in crack-tip are suggested. The validation of SIF calculation method through mapping initial stress field is investigated to consider initial residual stress on crack growth. The iterative crack-tip modeling program to simulate crack growth is developed using the proposed criteria for spider-web mesh design. The SIF results from the developed program are validated by comparing with those from technical reports of other institutes.

For the construction of safe and clear urban environment, it is necessary that we identify the rubbish waste volume and we know the accuracy volume. In this paper, we developed the algorithm which computes the waste volume using the stereo camera for enhancing the environment of waste repository. Using the stereo vision camera, we first computed the distortion parameters of stereo camera and then we obtained the points cloud of the object surface by measuring the target object. Regarding the points cloud as the input of the volume calculation algorithm, we obtained the waste volume of the target object. For this purpose, we suggested two volume calculation algorithm based on the uniform meshing method. The difference between the measured volume such as today's one and yesterday's one gives the reposit of waste volume. Using this approach, we can get the change of the waste volume repository by reading the volume reports weekly, monthly and yearly, so we can get quantitative statistics report of waste volume.

This paper described the free vibration characteristics of Optimized H Type (OHT) spacer grids (SG) supporting the PWR fuel rod. The vibration test and the finite element (FE) analysis are performed under the free boundary condition and the clamped at two points (or three points) in the bottom which is the same one as the experimental condition for the dummy rod continuously supported by spacer grids. A modal test is conducted by the impulse excitation method using an impulse hammer and an accelerometer, and the TDAS module of the I-DEAS software is used to acquire and analyze the sensor signals. The softwares related to the FE analysis are the I-DEAS for the geometrical shape modeling and meshing, and the ABAQUS for solving. The fundamental frequency of the OHT SG by experiment under a clamped condition at two points is 175.18 Hz, and shows a bending mode. We think there is no resonance between the fuel rod and the SG because the SG's frequency is higher than that of the fuel rod existing in the range from 30 to 120 Hz. The fundamental frequency of the SG under the free boundary condition is 349.2 Hz showing a bending mode, and the results between the test and the analysis have a good agreement with maximum 7 % in error It is also found that the FE analysis model of the OHT SGs to analyze an impact, a buckling and vibration et al. has been generated with reliability.

A design method of gear tooth profile which can reduce the noise of gear is studied. The tooth profile is generated by combining involute and cycloid tooth curves in which the involute tooth profile is near the pitch point and cycloid tooth profile at the addendum and the dedendum. Considering parameters which have an influence on the reduction of gear noise and building up a design conditions for the noise reduction of gear, the lower-noise combined gear tooth profile is designed. For the check of noise reduction of the combined gear profile, two pairs of combined profile gear, two pairs of involute gear, and a pair of cycloid gear were manufactured by the NC Wire Cutting Machine, and the experiment for measuring of gear noise was carried out on each pair. The noise reduction of the combined profile gear was obtained.
